Avis Rent A Car

I literally cannot say enough about Joanette (spelling?). We rented a car and child car seat from the Avis Airport location which was great. Unfortunately we set our on a road trip and far past our hotel, our child got sick. We desperately called the Lahaina Avis and spoke with Joanette who was the nicest person I’ve ever spoken to. Maybe she sense my panic but told us to come on in and she would be able to help us. I couldn’t believe how friendly she was. Many people we have dealt with so far have been nice but Joanette is out of this world nice and helpful. Our vacation would have been a disaster without her.
Thank you Joanette! You made our day today!!! You saved our vacation! You’ve definetly got a return customer and a family that will sing your praises!

Used a Groupon to go with Sea Maui to Lanai and for their sunset sail. Both cruises were great. All the staff were very friendly and accommodating. Drinks were refreshed frequently. We saw at least thirty whales and at the reef off Lanai we saw so many fish. It was better than what we have seen on trips to Molokini and other scuba diving trips we have taken while visiting Maui.

We were without a ride for a day, due to half of our crew wanting to go south maui. We wanted to stay west side of maui.
So at the last minute I called Jennette at Avis, told what I was looking for (4 door jeep wrangler).They had three colors for us to chose from. Jennette gave me a smoking great price! We walked across kaanapali highway. Avis had it ready for us, then my wife chose a different color. No problem, they switched it out at the last minute. It took less than five minutes for the whole process. We had a blast, took the hard top off and went exploring west side of maui. Next time I’m in maui, I will definitely use this Avis rental location again. Thank you Jennette at Avis!
I had such a good time in it today, I might keep it one more day!

This review is really for the Avis location at Kahului airport, I did not have any interaction with the little location on the Lahaina side.
Having rented through all the major car rental companies on Maui over the years, I can say that Avis was the worst, and mainly because they seemed to be so woefully understaffed. Getting the car signed out took forever, and I was the third person in line. The 15 or so lined up behind me probably needed sleeping bags! The counter personnel exacerbated the situation by needlessly chatting with customers.
Car return was no better, with just one attendant to handle a lot of returning cars. She was doing her best, but swamped.
I have been booking our Maui rental cars through Costco Travel for quite some time, and usually just pick the cheapest option for the size car I want. But from now on, even if Avis is the cheapest, I’ll spend a few extra dollars and rent from one of the others to avoid the delay and inconvenience.

We were in port for 2 days in Lahaina on a cruise ship and rather than spend money we didn’t have on their tours, my husband and I decided to rent a car from Avis. We found it through an online discount car rental website which scored us a great price on a 2-​door Jeep Wrangler. It should be noted that a 2-​door Wrangler was unavailable for renting, so they automatically (no charge) upgraded us to their last available 4-​door wrangler.
When we got to port, we headed over to where the free shuttle would be picking us up and was told they came every 10 minutes. AS it turns out, we only saw the shuttle twice in the hour we waited — the first time we saw the shuttle, fellow cruisers crammed into the ride and we had to wait for the second van. We were very frustrated, but in all fairness to the van drive and local Avis outlet, it wasn’t their fault. Once at the Avis location, we got in and out fairly quickly so we could hit the pavement. While out on our second day, we noticed a discrepancy with our rental agreement which we didn’t realize until after — while we had verbally said we were opting out of the insurance ($ 27.99/day I believe), we found that we had been charged for this option for both days of our rental. We called the Kaanapali Avis location (where we rented from) and they sorted things out over the phone.
We enjoyed our days in Maui and as well the service from this Avis location.

After picking up a car at the airport that I found to be wanting, I stopped in here and Marcy was so helpful in swapping the car out for a better option. I wasn’t even offered an option at the airport Avis. The other gal even transferred my luggage from car to car. Very impressed with this staff! Thank you!

I had a pleasant experience at this Avis location.
I was not able to get a hold of them on the phone to get picked up at Kahului Airport first and it went to an automatic message. I was not having a good feeling. Then there was another couple who had a reservation with them and he was able to talk to an actual person this time so we got picked up within 10 min from the airport. The ride is to the place is about 5 min.
The desk front lady was very nice. She never tried to sell an extra insurance to me, since I was going to use the one provided by American Express credit card. She even upgraded our rental to a Mustang. The car was clean and new. The whole process took about 5 min. We had no problem for the next 4 days. We returned the car to the Kahului location but again it was a smooth transaction.
I would use Avis again next time in Maui.

Perfectly fine Avis location (co-​premised with Budget since the companies have merged) with a bewildering range of staff attitudes. Once, over the phone, I spoke with a surly, jaded woman who seems unhappy to be working in the travel industry; upon arrival, I got to work with a pair of cheerful, friendly men who can get you on the way in a jiffy with Aloha spirit.
The cars themselves are standard Avis fare, with heavy emphasis on Chrysler products (we picked up a 300, quite nice) that are a bit too large for tooling around the island. With on-​island gas prices approaching $ 5/​gal for regular unleaded, I would’ve been much happier in a little Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Focus, «or similar.»
