Established in 1981.

Lafayette Health Club, always woman-owned & independently-owned by Debbie Swigert, began in 1981 with 62 members. Over the past 29 years, LHC has grown to more than 650 members & is Lamorinda’s most friendly, clean & affordable health club. LHC’s non-intimidating & welcoming atmosphere, genuine & friendly staff, excellent instructors & class offerings make LHC the best place to come get fit & healthy. Meet the Business Owner

Deb M.

Business Owner

Debbie has owned and operated the Lafayette Health Club since 1981. She was an active and competitive athlete from a very young age. Her adolescent years were spent submerged in a pool as a year-round, age-group swimmer.

Debbie dried off in her 20’s and started to lift weights and run, and she began to teach aerobic dance classes. By her 30’s she hit the pool again and was back into competing year-round with Masters Swimming (19 and over).

In her 40’s, Deb decided to expand her athletic horizons and began racing mountain bikes and competing in road & mountain bike triathlons, where she was a frequent age-group winner. While still swimming competitively, she managed to stay in the top 10 in the nation, in her age group, in the 200-yard butterfly.

Now in her 50’s, Deb & her husband hike instead of running mountain trails. In place of swimming competitively, she now swims for fitness and the pure joy of being in the water.

I gave this 5 stars because of what it isn’t: this is NOT the very fancy place down the street or the chain gym that operates for the masses. This is an owner-operated down-home community. And while it is nothing fancy, I happen to adore the atmosphere, which is very friendly and neighborly. I generally attend the yoga and free weight classes and I can usually find something every day, working around my changing schedule (I work from home). All of the yoga instructors are really good but my favorite class is Saturday morning Yoga with Jeanie — I wish we could get more of her. The owner Deb is around a lot so you can talk to her directly if you have questions, comments, concerns.

I liked a couple of yoga instructors there but they are all gone. The place really needs work. The yoga studio is falling apart! I didn’t care for the laid back atmosphere so I left. There are several classes where members waited for the instructor who never showed up. The monthly membership fee is about $ 70 which is pretty inexpensive around here.

I love this friendly local neighborhood gym. I’ve been a member for 2 years and have been very happy with it all around. Clean, not too crowded, friendly, reasonable rates and good staff who really cares. The classes are my favorite thing. Some 1^st rate yoga teachers.

I love this gym. People of all ages and fitness levels come here which makes it very un-intimidating. The people here are friendly and down to earth.
It is never over crowded the way that some gyms are. I’ve never had to wait for cardio equipment.
The equipment is kept clean and all the usual ammenities are offered.

I LOVE the 6:00 AM yoga class with Rod, he is wonderful teacher. The class can be very challenging, but I always feel fantastic afterwords. The studio itself is fresh and clean with nice views of oak trees. Just a great way to start your day. I buy a workout card and have only gone to classes.

This place isn’t bad at all. I mean, it’s no frills but the equipment is newish, it isn’t crowded and it has everything you would need out of a gym. Good locker rooms, towels and hair dryers, nice staff, magazines. They offer day passes that are cheap too, so you can try it out if you’re considering a gym in the burbs.

LHC is a hidden gem. The equipment, instructors, and classes are top notch– much better than what you get at the chain gyms. It is never very crowded. The staff is really pleasant and helpful. You don’t have to pay initiation fees. While more expensive than the big chain gyms, LHC is priced way more reasonably than the high-end gyms and its services are equal, if not superior.
If you are looking at a place to become serious about fitness in a relaxing environment, then this is the gym for you.
