Ashford Farm is a riding stable specializing in English style riding lessons. Located on 55 acres of rolling hills high above the Schuylkill River just outside Conshohocken, Ashford has three outdoor riding rings and a cross country course. We are within minutes of Philadelphia, the Main Line, and Chestnut Hill.

We can accomodate children and adults at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels for riding lessons. In the summertime, we also offer a day camp for children.

History

Established in 1959.

Ashford Farm is a family owned business that has been in the horse business for multiple generations. Bill & Caroline Canavan have been teaching people to ride since the 1950s. Generations of young riders have been through Ashford Farms riding lesson and camp program, and continue to do that at the beautiful equestrian facility. Their daughter Megan is the head trainer, specializing in eventing, hunter/​jumpers, foxhunting, and pleasure riding.

Business Owner

Caroline is «the Boss Lady» at Ashford Farm. Caroline’s father was a steeplechase jockey, horse trainer, and stable owner from England. As a child she grew up on horse back and competed in jumpers at the highest level. Running a riding stable and summer camp, she has spent most of her life teaching kids and adults how to ride. She still rides today on her ex-​racehorse Thoroughbred, Divine.

My daughter has taken lessons at Ashford for 2 years and has experienced their summer camp for the past two summers as well. We have had an excellent experience at Ashford. They get to know each of the riders and always match them up with the perfect horse to help them grow and develop. Kids change horses as they develop and to give them experience with different horses. Lessons are a full hour as the horses are already saddled and ready to go when you arrive. However, if your child arrives about 10 minutes early for the class they can assist in getting the horses saddled. During the winter, Ashford offers a winter camp that shows the kids how to tack up the horses, groom them, etc and the summer camp focuses on this as well. The summer camp has been a wonderful experience for my daughter as well. They usually ride 2x per day and go swimming, play games, do art, learn how to care for the horses, etc. Kids can attend a minimum of 2 weeks or up to the entire summer. Last, but not least, this is a family owned and operated farm where family and the kids come first. Not only do the kids learn to ride and care for horses, but Ashford has made it a warm and inviting «home» for all levels of riders.

I have so far been very impressed with this riding school. My instructor is lovely, supportive, motivating and obviously very knowledgable and experienced. I haven’t used other riding schools so I can’t really compare (why I gave it a 4 as opposed to a 5), but i can say that I have had only very positive experiences. It seems good value for money, they have a large number of beautiful well kept horse that are great for training and riding for all people of different levels.

This place is THE BEST!!! I began riding here almost 2 years ago as an adult learner. I had only done trail rides, and being 42 years old, I didn’t know if I could do it. Ashford Farms has been a wonderful experience. I love my instructor, Nina. She is patient, kind and has a sense of humor, which is required when teaching me to ride! Caroline the owner is terrific! When I have had the honor (and yes, it IS an honor) of having a lesson with her, I find myself working hard and being more brave than I think I am. She instills confidence in her students and you know she knows what she’s talking about! All of the instructors are fantastic! The barn is well kept and clean. The acres and acres of pastures are beautifully maintained. The horses? Well, there are so many to choose from. The instructors place you on an appropriate mount. The horses are healthy, happy and well cared for… And deeply loved. They aren’t barn-​bitter or old and tired. I take lessons weekly and privates whenever I can. Everyone here will teach you the proper way to work with horses, on the ground and in the saddle. Come see for yourself! The absolute best! You won’t regret one moment spent at Ashford Farms.
