Heritage Inn La Mesa

no phone lines, wifi, microwave, coffee maker, hair dryer, iron in the room. worst experience. carpet was filthy. bathroom was disgusting.

If they allowed half-​votes, I would have probably given this hotel a 1 ½. However, that is only because the bed appeared clean. I strongly suggest you do not stay at this hotel. There will be no refunds (partial or otherwise) given.
Complaints (in no specific order):
Our in-​room refrigerator was broken. We were told to check the knob in refer, that it was probably turned off. No, turns out there was no electricity on the circuit (we tested with another electric device).
wifi barely usable during non-​peak hours, otherwise completely unusable (page timeouts, errors, etc.).
TV wasn’t worth watching – most of the channels appeared to be OTA. The programming of the tv was terrible, too. When turned on, it would momentarily blare at full volume and then go quiet. The screen would then go to a blank channel. Switching through the channels was very tedious as most of the channels were blank.
The high class clientele were full of surprises at any odd hour on any night. The rooms REQUIRE additional sound proofing. Our last night there, a fight that went on (several hours off and on) between a woman and her boyfriend. She was very loud (she was outside as he apparently would not allow her back in the room) and he told her multiple times to be quiet, else the police be called. An ambulance/​police (didn’t look to see who was using a siren) picked up someone who sounded under the influence who stated he needed constant medication. A man who was aggravated by the slow service of the elevator (only 4 floors, so walk next time buddy), and thought it was appropriate to kick the elevator doors. A non-​functioning ice maker where hilarity ensued.
No security (no cameras, staff, fencing, etc.) – people were kicking and screaming (not an exaggeration) at machines (ice maker, elevator). Parking was not secured/​segregrated from visitors, so you better have good insurance.
The area is littered with the homeless (I realize that is not the hotel’s fault, and that the homeless have a right to live). Actually, the homeless seemed less an issue than the clientele staying at the hotel. The hotel has no security gate/​fencing, so you probably shouldn’t venture out of your room after dark.
Forgot to mention that the hotel is very close to the freeway. The noise is horrendous.

Disgusting roach infested hotel! Could not stay in the room, Rosanna at the front desk offered a new room; no refund! Wow, needless to say I did not want a new room. She says you checked in 3 hours ago and just complained… hum roaches woke up I guess. I didn’t notice any when I checked in oh but when I saw the first one many more were everywhere in the walls doors I mean nasty!

They will not honor their check in deal on Unilocal.I asked on 2 different times and all 3 staff members just played dumb. Older white lady and middle aged Hispanic lady and a manager that won’t come to the front but only makes her employees do her dirty work as I can hear her in the back snickering and telling her employees not to accept it. They were more than willing to accept a price double than that on a different site but I declined to stay there especially since they won’t honor their own deals and charge a deposit.
Yuck with pics of mice, roaches and bed bugs I’m glad I did not stay here.

This is the nastiest place I ever been by far FYI stay away this place is a top news story waiting to happen.

and the hotel info had nothin about a deposit. Checkout took 20 minutes waiting on room inspection. The entire property smelled really bad. Don’t know how this place is in business

How do I review this hotel for you? It was the worst hotel I have ever stayed in, ever! I don’t have one good thing to say about it. It should be rated ½ star. A true 2 star would look like the Ritz Carlton compared to this. I am so dissatisfied with this stay and I know for a fact that most anyone who books this hotel based on what they see online is going to be really fooled. The bullet proof glass walk-​up window clued me in a little when I arrived. Then they charge you $ 2 energy usage fee and a $ 20 deposit. Hmmm I thought that was weird but it was late and we were already booked. Those interior pictures on their website are probably from when it was built. I’m here to tell you that I’m pretty sure that those same bedspreads are being used only they have a few holes in them now. The lighting is some cheesy super bright surface mount fixtures over the bed and there was one hanging lamp that looked like it had been used for a punching bag with tears in it. Everything in the room was filthy and we wouldn’t even walk on the carpet with our bare feet. Stains and gum in the carpet, dents in the walls, lumpy mismatched pillows that felt like someone stuffed them themselves with leftover pieces of foam, outdated whitewash oak furniture that was severely worn, dented, and scratched. The chairs were stained and filthy. Surprisingly we only saw one cockroach. It was a complete dump! Not one nice thing in the room. Its a party hotel and there were people walking all around all hours of the night doing drugs and drinking and prostitutes coming and going. I don’t get scared easily but this place made me nervous. I want to expose this place. Its horrible! In the morning we got a nice surprise to the loudest shower I have ever heard. Like the pipes were rattling in the walls. The water was constantly fluctuating from hot to cold so that was fun to deal with. The only good thing was that the sleep timer worked on the 1990’s 19″ tv and I guess we should be happy that they had a «continental breakfast» consisting of your choice of three different muffins or pastries out of a box and some coffee. Limit two per person. Ha! What a joke this place is and their rates are $ 99 a night! But don’t take my word for it, I would suggest that everyone experience this for themselves. Its unbelievable!

I woke up in the middle of the night to a giant roach crawling on my chest. This place is disgusting! And ghetto as hell. Nuff said.

Wish I could give ZERO STARS.
1. DISHONEST BUSINESS — Go to their website (not third-​party, the actual hotel website) and you will see a nightly rate, and that they have «free wifi». But when you walk into the lobby, you’ll see a couple of crummy little signs on their shoddy counter (which is «finished» with crappy floor tiles, by the way). The signs inform you that you’ll pay a «surcharge» for electricity and that the wifi only works in the lobby. WHAT? Imagine going to a movie theater and paying a «surcharge» for the screen. A reputable business would increase their rates and advertise as such. As for the wifi, it only works in the lobby — actually, there’s a strong signal throughout the hotel but the passwords are different, and they only give you the lobby password. The front-​desk staff are trained to beat the customers over the head with «you must have booked third-​party, our website clearly states…» but I checked their website, and it doesn’t mention surcharges or wifi limitations. So, THERE.
2. TERRIBLE LOCATION — To the North, one of the busiest parkways in San Diego County. To the East, a second major thoroughfare. These are not «pedestrian» streets with shops, they are traffic arteries. To the south, Interstate 8. To the west, an offramp, and — get this — the entrance to the parking lot is a «cutout» from this offramp! The hotel is set into a «pit» bounded by these four sides, with shrubbery inhabited by homeless drug addicts and prostitutes. Your car definitely is not safe. ENJOY!
3. CLIENTELE — The people staying at this hotel come from two classes: Unfortunate souls who didn’t know better, and criminals. The elevator had spilled soda-​pop and urine on the floor my entire stay. Pool area had a bunch of loud, profane idiots screaming all day.
4. ROOM — Dirty, sandpaper towels (I used my own), dead batteries in the TV remote, TV has very limited channels (no premium at all), very limited hot water. The AC did work, but was very loud. Lamp on desk not plugged in, and no available outlet. Outlets on desk not energized. Two outlets in main room had no power either. Had to charge laptop & iPad at bathroom sink! Makes me wonder — WHY AM I PAYING AN ELECTRICITY SURCHARGE?!?
4. STAFF — Miraculously, EVERYBODY working at the front desk is «new» and «doesn’t know» anything to answer customer questions or concerns. The «manager» is never around, and is only called for «emergencies» which are defined as someone’s life being in danger. That actually happened during my stay, and the staff simply called the police — BUT NOT THE MANAGER. So, if you have no hot water or your wifi doesn’t work, as you can probably imagine — you’ll get no help.
SUMMARY — this is the WORST HOTEL I have ever stayed in, and I have travelled all over the world in 3^rd world countries so that’s saying something. If you have no self-​respect and want to be treated like garbage, by all means stay at this hotel. Otherwise, find somewhere else!!!
FINAL NOTE — I am not kidding about the criminal element. I’ve been accosted by a prostitute at the stairs and 3 guys are smoking crack or meth on the balcony. And I’m pretty sure the staff is violating laws too. Calling this place a «dump» is an insult to dumps.
THIS HOTEL SHOULD BE CONDEMNED AND THE MANAGER JAILED!!!

The reviews are pretty descriptive. We were in town for medical reasons, and needed a cheap place to stay. I’m combat disabled, and have a service dog. Not a fake service dog… a real service dog. The front desk demanded «paperwork» for him. There is no paperwork, and i asked what they would like to see. They said that they needed something proving he is a service dog. Again… there is
wife offered to show his training records, which she had on her phone, and they insisted on a paper hardcopy.
So, not only is this place in a cesspool, they don’t know ADA law. If i was litigious, I’d sue the crap out of them. I spent an extra 200 USD a night, just to sleep somewhere safe, with employees who dont make me feel like i have to prove that I’m disabled.

It’s an alright room, given the price. There was a little rust in the sink, and some dust on the bed frame, but everything else was clean and worked well. We had a plasma television in the room that received HBO, which was nice. Wi-​Fi is nice, but doesn’t always work, especially at night. The shower and tub gets you all the hot water you need, and there are two fresh bath towels and two hand towels on a rack near the sink. Nearby is a Chinese restaurant, Carl’s Junior, Phở Restaurant, and pizzeria just down the street. It’s noisy outside due to the close proximity to a highway, but I can’t hear the passing cars when inside the room. Without nice amenities like free continental breakfast, I can still recommended this place for a Sea World/​Zoo/​Water Park/​Comic-​Con trip if you just need a bed, television, and bathtub.

If you look for a place to stay inexpensively, try this place. You should not get scared of all the prostitutes and meth heads, they don’t bite and I am pretty sure the hotel categorizes every guest to its own floor. The check in is very old school, as so is the hotel itself.
You have to pay 2 dollars additional to every transaction as being a electricity sucharge? Funny, yet strange. Next to that there is a deposit of 20 dollars, and 10 dollars extra if you want a blow dryer.
Their wifi doesn’t work always as they state already at check in.
I had room 428 on the top floor, which was a non smoking room. No decoration/​portraits whatsoever, just basic beds in a large room. However, I did not have a desk, or iron board nor a microwave of coffeemaker. They must be scared that people might steal it or something.
The only nasty downside was the bathtub. It was not very fresh looking at all. But overall for a basic night of rest it’s on the border of durable.

First off I’ve stayed in worse hotels but this wasn’t much better.
The 3 of us needed a last minute hotel that would accept our two dogs coming with us as well. This one was close by, cheap and seemed to be large enough to still have a room available so last minute.
I really wish when we checked in they had told us there was an elevator since our room was on the 4^th floor, but then again the guy at the desk didn’t say much at all.
The room was a smoking room but was very potent even with that in mind. The lighting was ood. There was no card or anything explaining phone/​lights/​mini fridge use. Our room keys stopped working twice. The bed spread on one of the beds had cigarette burn holes when we arrived.
The house keeping maybe knows all of 10 words in English. There was a mishap when we were talking about having found the ice machine in front of the machine. The woman started asking us «No ice?» repeatedly and it took a while to a sure her there was no problem.
Overall it worked on short notice but I would not come back.

Okay I saw the bad reviews but we needed a place to stay. I’m not sure what everyone’s bitching about on here! Alright, so there’s a shared microwave, that’s kind of weird. And the room is honestly outdated (worn carpet, tube TV, old wooden furniture) but we found it kind of charming. It’s like staying at grandmas house lol.
Heritage Inn is SO affordable ($ 475/​week for a double queen room — $ 35 extra for both my kitties to stay the whole week! Score!) and the layout is a lot bigger AND more comfortable than the Red Roof Inn we just left. I just had the best sleep I’ve had in the week and a half we’ve been in San Diego. It’s right next to the freeway so it’s a little noisy and awkwardly located. We combed the room when we checked in because we were weary of the reviews but found NO BUGS whatsoever. Clean as can be. The air conditioning is freezing cold too, ahhh so nice.
I’d recommend this motel to anyone like us. We’re young, no kids, a couple cute pets, and in need of somewhere to stay while we hunt for jobs & apartments. It fits our needs perfectly and we’re really happy we picked Heritage Inn!

Paid $ 62 for 1 night. Should have went somewhere else and paid a tiny bit more. Their WiFi doesn’t work and they have a sign at the front counter about it so it probably hasn’t been working for a while. Weird location. No microwave in room. Definitely a «cheap» hotel. And one thing I thought is gross is they have carpet in the hallways outside. since it has rained it is soggy. Really don’t want to know how much mold is under that carpet. Not worth $ 62 a night.

The staff was courteous and very polite. Friendly and helpful every day I stayed here. It’s cheap and you get your money worth. Dog friendly a PLUS! Only thing was the WiFi didn’t work. Very disappointing but otherwise our stay was good. I gave it 3 stars because of the professional service.

First, on a positive note, the staff at the front desk was very nice.
Our first inkling that there were rough seas ahead was when we pulled up and noticed that one of the guests had strung their laundry out to dry on the balcony, delicates and all. The «lobby» was disheveled and the Formica countertop was coming apart. Our reservation was for a non smoking room, but we were checked in to a smoking room — very, very heavy with stale smoke odor. We requested a room change, but were denied until we said we’d have to cancel. New room wasn’t smoky, but clearly hadn’t been updated since the 1970s — Old shabby linens, patched carpet, etc. Felt like we were roughing it hostel-​style. There was only one bulb in the lamp, but at least the holes in the lampshade let some more light through. Definitely the worst hotel we’ve ever experienced.

If you love watching cops or America’s most wanted, this place is for you. My wife and I moved from Seattle and stayed here while we were waiting for our apartment to be ready and night one, we were woken up to the sound of pounding on the door next to us. «La Mesa Police! Open up!» No, our TV was not on. It was next door. Anyhow, they arrested two people that night and then the next morning there was glass in the parking lot from a broken car window. Not safe.
As far as cleanliness goes, it smelled like cigarettes and had some pretty bad soap scum and discoloration on the bathroom walls. Good news is, if you’re hungry, and you don’t want to walk across the street to mcdonalds, there was a booger on the back of the bathroom door.
So, if your life is lacking excitement, danger, and you’re seeking trills… Stop on by. Otherwise, it’s probably not for you. It wasn’t for us. In fact, after living here for awhile, no place in La Mesa is actually super safe. The closer to the water, or north of the 8 is probably a better bet.

We stayed here the weekend of Comic Con because it was pretty much the only room anywhere near San Diego that was less than $ 200/​night on short notice. Not a bad option if you’re just staying one night and will mostly be out of your room anyway.
Pros: Accessible pricing (also accepts AAA discount), very close to restaurants and gas stations, free danish in the morning, and the staff was always very friendly when I called in advance with questions. I had no problem booking or with the speed of check in. The morning of checkout, they called my room to ask if I was still planning to check out. I thought it was an odd thing to do, but overall harmless. Despite the bare bones look of the place, we found the bed surprisingly comfortable after a long day on our feet.
Cons: This is not a luxury place. This is not even a terribly modern place. It is a bed in a room. The bathroom is barely big enough to close the door without hitting the toilet. The driveway is a little tricky to get to because the hotel is on a triangle of land sandwiched between a freeway and major road. Considering this, you will probably experience street noise. If you’re a light sleeper, bring ear plugs. I could definitely hear the freeway and could also hear the people above us stomping around at 3 a.m. I was so tired that I didn’t really care, but it is something to be aware of.
I didn’t notice any of the shady hooker activity other reviewers have mentioned, and really had no problems. Just consider the type of experience you want before booking. If you want a relaxing, pampered getaway, you may want to pay more elsewhere. If you just want a reliable, inexpensive, decent place to rest on the way to your ultimate trip goals, I think this place does fine.

First, let me start with I have no idea what all the negative reviews are… I was really apprehensive about staying here, but there was not much choice in my budget for the time we needed to stay.
I can report I am happy that we stayed there and I would definitely stay here again. We were in town for Comic Con and was the only place under $ 100 a night.
Our first night, I got the best nights sleep in a hotel EVER. I have stayed at Marriotts, Sheratons, and possibly every other chain in Europe and North America, and never had as comfortable a bed.
As for other reviewers, I have no idea what they were talking about. There is really nothing else around and it is not even close to as described. During our stay I saw no drug dealers, prostitutes, transients, or anything else. I also thoroughly checked the room and there were no bed bugs or bugs of any kind. The room was spotless, we also did not want the room serviced, so we left the Do Not Disturb sign up the whole time and never was our room disturbed.
Dispelling other inaccurate claims, every morning there was a variety of fresh pastries and muffins free along with fresh coffee. We checked in after midnight when we arrived and there was no problem, longest time was getting the license plate number for the car, other than that a breeze. All the lamps worked, there was a working A/​C and refrigerator. And I don’t have any clue where someone said the electricity is on a timer, we forgot and left all the lights on all day, phones always charged 100%. And the road noises were not that bad, I have stayed at some places where it sounded lit the cars were going right past the door.
The negatives, limited parking and several nights there were big trucks and vehicles with trailers taking up 5 spaces. And they allow pets, which wouldn’t bother me too much except there was dog crap in the elevator when we got back to the room on the last (Saturday) night, which I called front desk and told them, and it was still there in the morning when we checked out.
