Just because a dentist has nice office staff (his daughter and her baby) and a fancy La Jolla location, doesn’t a good dentist make. I have to take some responsibility because it’s Like going to an auto repair guy, I have no idea what’s going on even with an explanation and photos. To make a very long story short, he did a crown and when it didn’t feel better he did a root canal. The canal broke off ! I never heard of such a thing and now I am having it redone by an endodontist which I should have done in the first place. So my advice is if Dr. Cunningham tells you you need a root canal go immediately to a specialist who specializes in root canals”. It’s the same price! Dr. Cunningham is a dentist, so for minor dental work he may be fine. But I obviously can’t recommend him. review helps others learn about great local businesses.

I’m so so happy to have found these dentists. I have seen both Dr. Johnson and Dr. Cunningham, and they are seriously the best. They make you feel very comfortable. They explain everything they did to me, and even showed me close up pictures of the small problems parts on my teeth and how they were going to fix them. The assistants and receptionists are incredibly nice, and pretty funny too. I really love this place. It’s so nice and refreshing to go to a dental office I can trust and don’t feel like I’m being ripped off. Thank you! (Plus parking is so easy).

My first encounter with Dr. Cunningham’s office was as a referral from a dentist who performed emergency procedures on me. I’ll admit, due to run ins with other dentists I was none too comfortable with finding a new dentist but I knew I required the service or would be looking at many more emergency procedures.
Amanda, the office guru, secretary, counselor, insurance specialist etc, was quick to address my concerns and assured me they would look out for my best interest as well as help me through the paranoia I felt against dentists.
They arranged right away for a cleaning, x-​rays and assessment in which Amanda spelled out everything they thought would be needed to get my mouth back in shape. She assured me they could stay within my budget and worked out all the insurance options while still providing me with what needed to be done to save my teeth.
They got me in right away for my second appointment and while I was beyond nervous, the staff treated me like family. The assistants kept me apprised of everything they would be doing and Dr. Cunningham began the procedures with a calm sympathetic approach. He was very good about informing me what he was doing and when I started to feel anything he was quick to make sure I was brought back to a comfort level. In all the subsequent visits Dr. Cunningham and his staff were consistently patient and accommodating.
At least 5 root canals and many more fillings later, I am glad to say both the staff and I survived and I cannot recommend them enough. They were ALL professional and courteous! I highly endorse them and encourage you to call even if it’s just for a cleaning and checkup.
I have found my permanent dentist!!!

This Dentist is a superstar. Excellent chairside manor and diagnostic skill during exam. During exam you can tell you are with someone that knows what he’s doing and is good at it ! and the people in the office are both fun and nice as can be.

I’ve had 2 cleanings, cavities filled, teeth whitening, and minor oral surgery with them so far and am pleased to report that I’ve never had better dental service than with Dr. Grey and his friendly team of experts!

Highly recommend. When I go there I feel as though I am family. The pain is minimal, Dr. Cunningham even puts a topical on your gums prior to giving you a shot. I had a few root canals performed at this office over the years and I couldn’t be more satisfied. I moved up to Orange County and found a new dentist up here, he performed a root canal. I had to drive back to San Diego for Dr. Cunningham to revive me from the torturous pain I was enduring. Dr. Cunningham and his staff go above and beyond. Highly recommend!

So far not impressed. I called to make an appt to find out that they will only do the exam and xrays on the first visit. I have to come back a different day for a cleaning. ??? I’ve been going to dentists for at least 35 years now and have never had to come back a different day for a cleaning. Annoying at best, but mostly inconvenient. Not to mention I didn’t exactly get the warm fuzzies from the person who answered the phone. My call was basically an annoyance to her. Sorry to have bothered you.

This review is coming from someone who has some major distrust with dentists due to negative experiences. My fiancé told me she had the same experiences but that Dr. Cunningham or «Dr. La Jolla» changed her perception for good. I gave in and scheduled my first appointment. Sue was my Dental Hygienist and made me feel very comfortable and brought my anxiety level way down. This dentist is not out to scam you or your insurance like so many in the industry. They truly care about you and your dental health and make everything clear and easy to understand while dealing directly with your insurance and showing you EXACTLY what they will pay for and the entire breakdown. From someone who had zero trust in dentists, they’ve built a professional relationship that I truly appreciate. If you were like me and had some bad dental experiences, give Dr. La Jolla a chance to change your view, you’ll be smiling if you do. ™

Dr. Cunningham, and the entire staff at the La Jolla office, are really amazing. I have never felt more at ease in a medical setting than in this office. Everyone is very reasonable and personable. Dr. Cunningham is friendly, relaxed, and tremendously good at his job. Work gets done fast and well. The office is up to date with modern techniques. I can’t really say enough good things about this office. Been going there for several years and will continue to use them for the foreseeable future.

First my wife had a tooth worked on that was supposed to save the tooth. Not! She is now getting an implant. Then I went in for a cleaning and was told that i needed deep cleaning because most of my numbers (where they probe between the teeth and the gums) were 4+. Besides being one of the most painful experiences I ever had at a dentist, the funny thing is that I just had my teeth examined and cleaned three months ago (and only had 2 – 3 gum numbers). I never experienced pain from that probing before. I got the feeling the instrument was being jammed down to get higher numbers so I’d go for the deep cleaning. Then when all this was done the staff told me that Dr. Cunningham doesn’t like a patient seeing more than one dentist (another funny thing is that I have never seen Dr. Cunningham, only his associate). So I have now switched dentists. And so it goes and goes …

Dr Grey is the best! His office is comfortable, clean and his equipment up to date. His staff is wonderful, everyone is welcoming, kind and helpful. They even offered me a phone charger when I said my phone was going low. The best part… their work. My teeth are clean and happy. 1 full filling and 4 cosmetic fillings. No pain, swelling or irritation. I will never change dentists again. Thank you!

He has been my primary dentist for several years. San Diego for some reason does not have great dentist. Dr. Cunningham will exceed your expectations.
Friendly staff and a clean office. He performed a root canal on a tooth of mine and he checked it 3 times to make sure it was done completely and correctly. He is the IDEAL dentist.

Can I give this place 10 stars, please?!? I have been going here for a few years now and I absolutely love this dentist’s office. Is it weird to love going to the dentist?
Anyway, like I said, Dr. Cunningham has been my primary dentist for a few years now (maybe 4 or 5). I went through a slew of slimy dentists in San Diego before I found this office. Other offices were always recommending work that I didn’t need. It was different here. The office was wonderful right off the bat. I have referred multiple friends to this office and they all say the same thing-​They love it here!
APPOINTMENTS: It’s easy to get an appointment and Amanda (who is so wonderful, by the way) will ALWAYS squeeze you in if it’s a dental emergency. I used to have a crazy work schedule and she would always help me out and squeeze me in last minute for my cleanings. Wait time? Forget about it. They always see you right at or within minutes of your scheduled appointment.
DENTIST: Dr. Cunningham is pleasant and a great dentist. Fillings are always painless and quick. In addition to my regular dental visits, I’ve also had some cosmetic work done here. I had invisilign done about 2 years ago and I am sooooo pleased with the results! When it came time for me to get invisilign, I did not even shop around for prices. Not worth it. I trust Dr. Cunningham and figured I didn’t want to take my chances to try and hunt for a bargain.
HYGIENE: As for the hygenists, I can’t name any in specific one that is the best because they are all great! Friendly, gentle and quick.
Ok, so you get the point. I love this place! 10 Stars! (Too bad Unilocal only let’s me give 5)
**Note: I know there was a negative comment on here about the other dentist, Shereen Johnson. I have never seen her so unfortunately, I cannot comment on that. I will always see Dr. Cunningham if possible.

Dr. Cunningham is the best Dentist ever. Sue is the best hygienist ever. The staff at the front desk… well, you get where I am going with this. I can’t imagine how many dental offices I pass on the way to this place, but the drive is always worth it.
These guys rock. End of story.

Poor communication combined with too much focus on selling me anything and everything, won’t be back. I called for a cleaning as a new patient, but was told when I got there that I wouldn’t be getting a cleaning that day, just x-​rays and a consult, frustrating. Then after some fast-​talk from the dentist I was asked to commit, with a deposit!, to three more sessions that would cost me almost $ 1000. I’ve since gone to a different dentist and got the cleaning I needed in one visit at no cost to me as it was covered by my insurance (much of the suggested services here were not). Only positive was friendly and helpful staff (other than initial miscommunication on not getting a cleaning first visit). Dentist wasn’t rude either, just didn’t explain things well before asking for that much money.

Make sure you get Cunningham and not the lady dentist. She didn’t seem as experienced and the drill slipped and cut my mouth. The appointment took a long time because she kept having to stop because she couldn’t see from all the blood. Also, be aware of of their 48 HOUR CANCELLATION POLICY because they don’t hesitate to charge you SIXTY DOLLARS even if you can’t make it due to an emergency. I was a patient for about 2 years and was seriously considering getting Invisalign treatment there, but I will go elsewhere after getting a bill in the mail for cancelling the appointment.

This is, by far, the best dental office I have found that takes our Safeguard HMO plan. I really like and appreciate my hygienist. I have had a good experience with scheduling appointments that are convenient. I once had to wait over an hour because an unscheduled emergency took priority, but I get that, and fortunately I wasn’t pressed for time that day.
