Holua Resort at Mauna Loa Village

Wow, should have written this after my visit in November 2014. I came her at the recommendation of a friend and absolutely loved it. Had a horrendous trip, coming from the airport after a long, meal-​less flight. But this place was amazing. The check in was great and easy. Our room was available and someone offered to show us to our room. I would have taken them up on the offer, except that I wanted to get my gear in my room and some food in my belly right away and this gentleman was helping another person with the same thing. They did call to make sure we made it. AWESOME! I was able to find parking on site quite easily which was great.
We had a full fridge, which was great because my hubby and I love to cook (even on vacation). We had a place to put leftovers the next day as well. The unit we stayed in had three bedrooms, we only used one. And i loved going upstairs to cook and watch TV. One day we tried to eat dinner outside on the balcony but we had so many moths around us, we went back inside. Oh well. Tropical living!
The only issue, my husband had an event with a roach in the bathroom. He knew I’d freak out so he didn’t mention it until later. That was my only gripe and I kept my clothes in my suitcase after that. Other than that, the trip was top notch. Also, unfortunately, the concierge recommended going to places that are touristy and not very good. I reviewed some of those places. The places with the 4 and 5 stars, we found on our own.
I would totally stay here again in a heartbeat, if we were coming back to this island, however, my husband and I fell in love with Maui so that’s probably going to be our go to spot from now on. But this one is a beauty! I felt safe and loved my time here.

Awesome resort. Clean, friendly staff. Checked in early because the front desk rep called us (as promised if available earlier) to inform us our room was available. Highly recommend this resort if you’re looking for a quiet relaxing stay on Hawaii Island.

Horrible place. Dirty, not accommodating at all. Looks nice from the outside the dirty on the inside. Pools need to be resurfaced. Place needs a major overhaul. Walked into our room floor was so because the dishwasher was leaking called maintenance they said they fixed it to wake up at 3 o’clock in the morning and have a completely flooded again. Customer service needs to go through empathy training they do not know how to speak to their customers.

Beautiful Resort! Very friendly and helpful staff. We are spending our Honeymoon here and would gladly come back.

Very clean and nice condo, people are friendly and accommodating specially Mr. Evan who always offer help to our family during our stay. Everything that you need from rice cooker, kitchen utensils, it was a 2 story unit so, the house is roomy, plus the veranda gives us a relaxing view of the garden. It was a relaxing place to stay here in Big Island! Will definitely come back here again!

This is a perfect spot to stay, especially if you’re going to be taking any trips out of the Keauhou Bay Boat Ramp, which is a five-​minute walk down the road. The staff were super friendly and accommodating, and we happened to get a free upgrade to a two-​floor suite that was really spacious, up-​to-​date, and comfortable. The parking is free and easy in the nearby underground lot. Cars can only drive up to a certain point along the road, so it’s practically silent around there at night.

This resort is average in terms of amenities, quality and location. However, we got an amazing price for a 7 night stay and it was a great jumping off point for all of our Big Island adventures.
The Great: amazing and super friendly staff, beautiful and quiet grounds with plenty of bird watching, they offer beach rentals such as umbrellas and chairs, bbq’s located near each cluster of units so you can grill your own dinner, free DVD’s you can borrow during your stay, lovely patio area at each unit, well equipped kitchen, super comfy bed, and a washer/​dryer!!! (This was super helpful because we did a lot of hiking and swimming so we got to wash all our dirty clothes before packing to go home)
The Average: Bathroom was a bit small and not really well planned out (the door closed right up against the shower,) a bit of mold in the shower itself, pools and hot tubs need some updating and weren’t as clean as I would have liked, the gym was really poorly stocked, walls were a bit thin and we heard a lot of footsteps above us, definitely not on the luxury tip so if that’s your style, this is not your best bet.
Overall, it suited our needs just fine, since we didn’t spend a lot of time in the room. The location was great-​easy drive to Kona, Captain Cook and easy highway access to other destinations. Nearby is Keauhou Bay, so it was a nice destination for a morning walk. There was also the Keauhou Shopping Center that had some shops and restaurants.
Great value for Hawaii and you get quite a lot for the lower prices they charge. I’d stay there again…

Bed– ³⁄₅ Average. Not to firm and not too soft.
Room-​3/​5 Televisions were out dated. Spacious with a large balcony. Bonus is a full kitchen. Has air conditioning (not central air), ceiling fan, screen front door. Bathroom has a shower tub combo. Water pressure was weak.
Proximity 3÷5− About a 10 min drive to downtown Kona. There is a shopping center near with a couple of restaurants. Also there is a Sheraton nearby but after 8pm it is a ghost town! Note– places close early in Kona so if you want to go out and eat plan accordingly unless you head to town. About a 30 minute drive to the airport.
Parking 2/​5-​Garage parking. It is dark in the garage.
Price 4÷5− For the space you get the price is very good.
Additional tips-​When walking from the garage to your unit tuck your shirt in to avoid roaches flying up and inside your shirt!

We stayed here for a week, it was just ok. Definitely needs an update (especially the awful carpet). The pool also needs work. The front desk was helpful and promptly brought towels when we requested them, there’s no housekeeping so u need to request towels/​linens and take your own trash out. And we kept seeing tiny little mosquitos in the unit. I wouldn’t come back/​recommend.

For our first visit to Hawaii we used our timeshare week with Shell Vacations to stay at Holua Resort. The unit was very good, just the right size for the two of us and located well so that we could go on day trips around the island. Kitchen was so nice, we cooked our own meals over half the time so we could have a few special meals out. Also, having a washer & dryer are so nice, it let us travel lighter and not worry about having clean clothes.
The desk staff and service team were just great, addressing a few minor issues like changing a light bulb and getting the ceiling fan working. The resort concierge, Shawn, was so very helpful to us as SVC owners, setting up various tours to go fishing, ziplining, and a helicopter ride over the volcano. He really worked hard getting very good deals, excellent service!

We checked in on 4/​14, so that we would be close to the dive operations near Kailua Kona. We were initially booked at another place in Hilo, so staying here was a last minute change of plan for us.
We asked for a second level with ocean view but was told that only 2 bedroom rooms had ocean views and none were available. Also there were no 1 bedroom rooms available on the second level. We settled for a room on the ground level. 12 – 74. I hate it when they say «we’ll get you the best room available…» when in fact it’s a pretty crappy room and is the only one available.
As a lot of other reviewers said (here and elsewhere), being on the ground level sucks. We could hear the neighbor’s AC unit turning on/​off and every single little footstep from the people in the room above us. The only good thing was the suite was very spacious and we were relatively near the garage parking. We never checked out the facilities because our primary objective of staying here was to go scuba diving, so all we ever did in our rooms was sleep and shower. The grounds seem well kept, but we never checked out any of the facilities, e.g. swimming pools, so I can’t speak about them.
We also found a dead roach in our room on the last night of our stay. The front desk, when told about this, simply said that their exterminators come in once a week to spray and dead roaches have a tendency to show up a day or so afterwards. Great.
For our next stay on Big Island, we would choose to stay elsewhere.

We booked 4 nights here for our honeymoon and absolutely LOVED it! We got a one bedroom suite on the second floor. At check-​in, we were greeted with friendly «alohas» and all the staff that works the grounds were always smiling and eager to lend a hand.
We immediately felt like we were in paradise as soon as we opened the door to our suite. Our suite was super spacious and decorated in a tropical theme — lots of blues and greens. The kitchen and washer/​dryer was useful for us to make breakfast and do our laundry. The icing on the cake was the balcony for us. The balcony was huge, with two lounge chairs, and a table with a couple of chairs. We often ate breakfast and had drinks on this balcony.
The resort itself was immaculately kept. The grounds and courtyards were decorated beautifully with plants and flowers. There are 8 small swimming pools (accompanied by 8 hot tubs) and 8 tennis courts. There’s also a golf course closeby.
The location of the resort was very convenient. A 5-​minute drive will get you to a supermarket and a 10-​minute drive will get you to a beach that is great for snorkeling. The huge parking lot is also covered so the sun won’t heat up your car.
We can’t get over how much we love this place! It’s definitely one of the best resorts we’ve stayed at, especially for the rate that we paid! There’s no resort fee and free Wi-​Fi is available. We felt so relaxed and it was a wonderful start to our honeymoon. I’m going to recommend this place to all my friends and will definitely stay here if we visit Kona again!
p. s. I left my jacket at the resort. When I called the resort to ask them to ship it back to me, the lady at the front desk went out of her way to make sure I got the best shipping rate possible. Customer service is at its best here!
p. p. s. This is a luxurious 4 to 4.5 star property. On many travel sites, it is only rated 3.5, which I think does not do this property justice.

Lovely place.

This may sound biased since I’m a timeshare owner with Shell Vacations, but who cares. What it comes down to is customer service, cleanliness, and location. This was our first trip to Hawaii with 3 kids in tow and we were expecting to hear fights about who is sleeping where, the amount of space needed to separate them, etc. We arrived to Holua Resort 3 hours before our intended check-​in time and immediately we were able to check-​in and we were upgraded to the 2 story, 3bdrm, 4 bath that is only reserved for Elite owners… can we say, sweet?! Gotta love the unexpected surprises and superior level of customer service we received during our entire stay!
No fights about where the kids were sleeping, each kid had their own bathroom, Weber gas grills out near each building, air conditioning was a bonus, and rentals of DVD movies and beach accessories at the front desk were free since… we are Shell Vacations Club Elite owners!
Even if you’re not an owner, this is a great place to stay… the prices I saw online seem fair, full kitchen to stock up on essentials and keep costs down from having to eat out everyday, and it’s about a 7 – 10 min drive to a good beach (Magic Sands)

Wow… this place has been one of the best resort type accomodations I’ve ever been to. And not just because this was in one of the most beautiful places on this planet.
Highlights:
— Genuinely caring and friendly staff. They helped us with everthing we asked.
— Quiet, private atmosphere. You would think this place would be crazy night and day but not at all… even though it is massive and it was completely booked, it was consistently quiet, well maintained, clean and private.
— This place like I said above is massive! It has something like 8 pools. So no matter where you end up you’ll have a pool right beside your room. We had a pool in our backyard. And the pool was always empty and available for use 24 hours a day. (the lights go off at night but who cares and the property is properly lit so the pool area never gets that dark.
— The room itself. This wasn’t a ‘room’. This was a spacious one bed room and this place was bigger than my apartment in Toronto. Very comfy king size bed. And a full kitchen which had everything… I mean EVERYTHING you may need. From cutlery to appliances to blender to things I don’t have at my own house! We even had a washing machine and a dryer and even detergent.
–The village is located in an excellent area and close to everything.
— Affordable prices!
Bottom line, I felt at home here. No, wait… I WISH my home was as comfortable and situated in the middle of heaven. My tip: when going to the Big Island, stay here, forget about all those hotels… even if you’re filthy rich and can afford the 5 stars hotels!

. I was impressed by the amenities and that it’s literally a townhouse with hotel rates. Instead of booking through Expedia, I called them and booked it with a kamaaina rate. The prices for this hotel are reasonable considering all the things that you get for it. Pretty much the same price as a crappy Waikiki hotel with a better product.
First off, don’t let the color scheme scare you. I thought about it too while looking at the pictures, but in person it’s not so bad. The multi colored carpet wasn’t as bright and kinda even added some happy vibes while being there. The televisions are tube tvs and outdated but it does the job with cable. Anyway, who sits in their hotel room on vacation to watch tv?!
The bed was comfy and king sized. You can get a one or two bedroom. We had one bathroom and a half bath in the living room. The living room was huge! Complete with two sofas — one was a pull out bed. Also had a dining room table complete with table mats. The kitchen is completely stocked with pans, pots, baking ware, measuring cups, wine bottle openers, utensils, tongs, you name it! Free coffee with coffee pot and even a rice cooker and full fridge and dishwasher. You got a stove and oven and even dishwashing liquid, a dish rack and sponge. THEY EVEN HAVE A WASHER AND DRYER IN YOUR UNIT! Complete with free detergent and laundry basket! Get outta here! And of course soap, shampoo etc. And even beach towels in the room.
You can also check out boogie boards, coolers and beach mats for free at the front desk and there is a very small gym on site and tennis courts.
The patio (we got a downstairs unit) has two sun bathing chairs and a table with 4 regular chairs and for you smokers even an ash tray out side.
There are 8 pools on property with hot tubs and even bbq grills so you can grill your own steaks.
Parking is free and you have to walk to your unit but it isn’t that far. And if you have a lot of luggage or are lazy, they will pick you up in a golf cart and take you to your room.
Check in and check out was easy but avoid the guy named Shawn at the front desk who pushes you to buy packages for tours. I guess it’s cool if you’re a full on tourist but annoying if you’re local and already have a plan set for your vacation.

Is the Big Island paradise or what?
Decided to go to Kona Hawaii after deciding Maui was not going to workout. I checked out Trip Advisor and saw some really good reviews on the Holua Resort. Noticed some reviews say some of the stuff is older ie. lime green rooms and carpeting. I had to be a judge myself. What I like most is that this is not mainstream Kona where you face all of the traffic and children with boogie boards screaming. The location is more tranquil by a golf course, tropical gardens and the ocean.
On arrival I noticed the spacious grounds and the hospitality. Everyone said Aloha with a smile, even early in the morning. The one bedroom on the second floor was spacious with updated furniture, a 32 inch flat screen, large bedroom, practical kitchen, stackable washer and dryer plus a lanai with a dining table and lounge chairs. OK I did see the lime green walls but hey this Hawaii, no Navajo white walls. Back to the lanai… I can see myself now drinking some Kona Longboard lagers, relaxing and watching the sunset. Ahhh!

Really great hub for Big Island sightseeing. It is your home away from home with every amenity you would need but don’t really use. We really thought that we would be cheaper by eating in. Go to the grocery store and you will see, there’s no way you could make than cheaper than most restaurants. The room décor is a little outdated, but it reminded me so much of houses in the Outer Banks, I was tickled pink. The porches were great for sunsets and card playing, but alas, no beach access. You need a car to get here, but it’s free parking, and it’s kinda nice not coming right out of your room to a sea of cars.
The staff were really great getting us beach-​ready, and the drive to nice beaches weren’t so bad. We waited a day and a half for the concierge who was long-​winded and really led us astray on dinner options. We also weren’t quite sure if people came to pick up the trash and replenish the toiletries, but we weren’t worried about it.
Affordable condo, free parking and wifi with beautiful grounds made for a great stay in Kailua Kona.

Loved, loved, loved this place.
My boyfriend and I stayed here for 3 nights, and it worked out to be $ 135/​night after taxes, etc.
For that price, we got our own suite — your own washer/​dryer, your own kitchenette, a dining room, living room, patio, use of BBQ, refrigerator (great to store beer), lots of kitchen utensils including a corkscrew to open up a wine bottle, etc — everything we wanted. My boyfriend is super picky having stayed at 5 star hotels for business purposes, and he loved this place.
The location was perfect. It wasn’t next to the main strip so you can actually getaway (perfect for a honeymon), but it was close to a small strip mall with a grocery store (stock up on wine and beer), and some small restaurants (like L&L). We found that a lot of things we wanted to do (Captain Cook snorkelling, Place of Refuge, volcano, coffee tour) was south of Kailua Kona, so we were actually closer to things that if we stayed up north where there were more touristy restaurants. You do need a car if you stay here.
The staff was a little slow at getting us extra amenities (think they’re moving on Hawaii time), but on the day of our checkout, they let us use their gym shower, providing us with towels and soap/​shampoo, so that we could snorkel and make the most of our last day in Kona. It was the perfect ending to our stay here.
