Surf Lessons by Margo Oberg Kauai

I booked a surf lesson w/​Margo Oberg surf school for my girlfriend’s 50^th birthday 30 days in advance. Her voice mail stated to call «Kyle» her instructor. Her VM also stated that if he did not call back to let her know. Left Margo a message and never heard back. Did call Kyle and personally speak with him to book a lesson for 0930 Friday 28 August. All confirmed and let him know we were staying at Sheraton Poipu (where he would meet us for lessons). On 28 August at appointed time & location; Kyle was nowhere to be found! Another couple was also there awaiting their 0915 lesson. Multiple calls to Kyle were unanswered. He finally called back. Seems he may have overslept from night before? Kyle stated he was unaware he had any lessons booked. Kyle showed up 30 minutes late. 90 minute lesson ended up being 60 minutes in total. Seems Margo is trading on her name and past resume. Very disappointing experience all around!

Our daughters, 15 and 11, loved Kyle and quickly were up on their boards. Kyle was extremely encouraging and helpful. After checking photos we saw they all have kyle cheering and encouraging them in the background. A great experience and we highly recommend them!

The best surf lessons our family has had. My daughter is 14 and my son is 11. We’ve had a few lessons already at other beaches and with other schools but these guys were the best. We’ve had surf lessons before but Kyle and Jeremy gave us really prepped us well. They gave us the best tips on how to spot and time catching a wave. We had a really good time surfing with these guys. We will definitely go back and highly recommend them!

Super fantastic first surf lesson!
My husband and I got a semi-​private lesson for the two of us. There are at least four surf schools that meet up at this spot so ask someone if you can’t find your group. Just go to the grassy part of the dead end past the Sheraton and you will find them.
We started with some instruction on land with Alvin that was very helpful, plus some funny stories to get our minds off the fear of crashing into the reef! They will lend you a rash guard if you don’t have one. Then he sent us out to the beach to watch where the group lesson had already started, and told us about the local wave conditions, etiquette, tips, and pretty much all the basics we needed to know. He even told us tips for walking forward on our board when we got more advanced. We thought he was crazy but both ended up using the advice before the lesson ended.
Having the private lesson was like having a Sherpa on Everest. The instructor stood in the water and grabbed the nose of my board and waited until a good wave came. Then he would say «Go!» and push me out. No need to think about anything but getting up on the board. Fun!!! Both of us stood up by our third tries and probably caught 12 waves in the hour we were out there. I also got some good tips for how to spot waves on my own, and heard some gnarly stories of surf wounds that needed stitches. Eek!
I was so nervous going into it and sooooo happy by the end. My ‘last’ ride wasn’t so stellar so I got one more try and rode it in all the way to the sand! Whoo whoo! Afterward Jeremy and Alvin said we could take out the boards again after lunch if they were not busy. So cool! We were too pooped but it was great to have the offer.
This outfit is all about staying positive and having fun. You will have a blast.
Tip– bring booties if you have them. We both got a few cuts on our feet. Most didn’t warrant bandaids, but I wished I had packed my surf booties since I do own some.

I’ve been to HI several times in my life but have never tried surfing before. This time before I even landed I did my research and knew which school and instructor I will book during my stay (the one of course that was the best rated on Unilocal and had at least 25 reviews). The popular school’s rates were not the best but I was willing to pay… Next day I accidentaly ran into Jeremy (Margo Oberg’s Surfing school instructor) and I asked him about his lessons. He was really cool and not pushy at all. His rate was much lower than the popular school’s rates so I though why not give it a shot…

To my surprise, after a quick training on the sand, we were in the water and ready to go. He told me to relax and try to do what he showed me earlier on the sand. On my very 2^nd wave I was standing up already while Jeremy was cheering me on with his «wooohooo». I have to say, he was great! He had the best rate, best approach, made me laugh and taught me so much.
It was a life changing experience and he made it so easy. Give it a shot, you will not regret it.

Margo’s surf school has been around for 25 years. She’s a true professional and her staff is top notch.
I highly recommend taking a surf lessons from them. You’ll have a great time and its fun for the whole family.
