The Ocean Course

Most beautiful beating of my life. Very difficult course (atleast for me and my crew). Our forecaddie Anthony was awesome. We would have lost 100 balls without him. Plus he pointed out all the alligators — which we (and our teen boys) enjoyed. Look forward to playing again on our next golf trip — maybe I’ll get a birdie next time… maybe not.

Amazingly tough course but the views are awesome. This is a must play course but when the wind is up, which it usually is here, it is difficult to score. Enjoy the ocean views but leave scoring expectations at home.

If you would like to get your buttocks (trying to be classy with my words here, considering this is a very high class establishment) handed to you, then head to the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island. It is by far one of the nicest, well maintained courses I’ve ever been to (that’s not saying all that much, but the golfer I was with agreed and he frequents the courses just as much as Spieth and McIlroy…) with a wonderful ocean breeze to take the edge off of the glowing sun.
18 holes will take you about 4 – 5 hours, regardless of how good you are… And the average score on these links is a 100, even though it’s a PAR 72 course (or at least that’s what I thought I saw on the tee card).
I didn’t play any golf while at this course (except for hitting a few balls at the driving range) because I didn’t want to be a show off… So instead I observed my golfer and his father birdie, par, bogie and double bogie… And hit a few in the hazards, ha ha! No Eagles were spotted unfortunately, but being from WYOMING, I only really expect them to come out in the Rocky Mountains??? Okay that was bad. Ha Ha Ha.
Any ways, if you want to treat yourself (as I know this place costs a PRETTY PENNY) to a stunning round of golf, with ocean views, sights of mansions, and the occasional alligator, then come on over! You have to walk the course prior to 12pm, with a caddie, but after 1pm you can take a cart, however, a caddie still has to be present and it’s recommended you tip him at least $ 25 per person playing… On top of everything else.
PS: if you believe beer will improve your golf swing (yeah, it probably won’t), a can is $ 5 and the concession girl will be driving around to serve you…
PSS: I had to pee, and on hole 14, I believe, there is a bathroom… The nicest in the middle of nowhere bathroom I’ve ever used before!

The course is beautiful. The views are beautiful. It’s a beautiful place. All of that will cost you though as a round is close to $ 400, not including the tip for your caddie. If you can afford it or if you get a round for free from work then it’s not really a big deal, but for most, it’s really pricey. All of this is ok too though, because it is a great course, but I felt a bit rushed by the caddies. They almost help too much, I’d rather them sit there and hangout unless I asked for a read. You better bring a lot of balls too because the only safe place on the course is short or on the green, everywhere else places you at risk of losing your ball. It’s hard to justify paying $ 400 for a round, I felt guilty almost. I’d play again, but it wouldn’t be an easy decision.

Awesome course but hard. Played late in the day and cross winds were brutal. A hair expensive. But worth it if you can swing it.

A wonderful and absolutely beautiful course … Definitely one not to miss out on. Just do it !!

I love coming here. Truly as good (and challenging!) as they come. Incredible views. First class clubhouse. Depending on the wind, you could either give or get 40 yards on a hole. Kiawah does things right.

No doubt the best course I have every played. Your wallet will be in pain after you play, but it will get over it. The views are spectacular. Walking towards the clubhouse on the 18^th with the Atlantic crashing in the background, you actually feel like you’ve just won the PGA Championship (apparently some guy named McIlroy actually won it).
The course itself is unlike any layout I have played. Every hole is elevated above a waste area (or water hazard) on each side of the fairway/​rough. Hit a big banana or hook and you will either be in the waste or in the drink. Many people claim this is the most difficult course they have every played. I would argue it depends on what day you play and how strong the winds are. Our caddy told us we caught it on a day with good conditions (only 15−20mph winds as opposed to 30 – 35). Regardless, make sure your game is tuned up before you play the course and bring a few extra eggs just in case.
Bottom line, this is an absolute must play for any avid golfer. Absolutely worth the price of admission.
Side note: The Atlantic is slowly eroding the edges of this course. Part of the driving range has actually been destroyed. I’m sure they will develop a plan to mitigate this erosion, but if a decent size hurricane happens to hit this area, this course won’t exist anymore. If this is on your bucket list (and if it isn’t it should be) I’d recommend playing it sooner rather than later.

This place is exactly what all the reviews say, simply awesome. I have never golfed before I got here, messed around on a few holes back home in California but never even golfed 9 holes. We came here on the «Toyota» trip the hubs won/​earned from work. He signed us up for 18 holes, early in the day so it was a walking course with a caddy. Our caddy, Chris was beyond AMAZING, BEYOND! Wow, I actually parred two holes with out cheating and fell madly in love with the game (See what you started James) I found walking makes the game much more enjoyable and gives one a lot of time to see the gaters. Don’t get all the way here and miss out on this experience of a lifetime. Thanks Chris, you really are at your calling, forget about that marketing degree, the golf world needs you, you are the best.

The Ocean Course is a spectacular golf experience, but it doesn’t compete with the likes of Bandon Dunes golf courses or Pebble Beach. I realize that’s a tough comparison given the caliber of Bandon and Pebble, but as such, the Ocean Course is accurately priced at just over ~$ 200 per round for guests at Kiawah Island Resort, which is a bargain compared to Pebble. It was well worth that price, but it’s barely a top ten course in the US in my opinion.
The front nine does not have as many oceanside holes. The course in general is in top notch shape with world class caddies. The practice facilities and clubhouse are excellent, and I highly recommend the Ryder Cup bar /​restaurant. While I thoroughly enjoyed my round, there was not a single hole where I was completely ‘blown away’ by the beauty of it, like I felt a few times at Pacific Dunes or Bandon Dunes, where the sheer beauty of the ocean and dunes on a few holes completely knocks you off your feet.
In summary: world class course, but nowhere near close to a Bandon Dunes golf course or Pebble. Top notch caddies and impressive clubhouse and restaurants. The pro shop employees are helpful and courteous. It’s worth just coming to use the facilities, especially the chipping/​putting green which was sizable and world class.

In a word: spectacular.
The course is long and tough, but the fairways were immaculately maintained and surprisingly wide. The greens were also perfectly groomed and rolled really nice.
Definitely take a caddie and walk this course! You’ll actually play faster because carts must stay on the sand paths to the sides of the holes and you’ll have to trek out to your ball in the fairway anyway. But more importantly, you’ll have more time to admire what a unique and beautiful place this course is.
Any serious golfer should put this course on their bucket list.

Went for lunch today. Service was great but pretty slow for what I ordered. Salad was great, and the prices are pretty good even though the menu is very small. I would recommend this place for practically anyone, except for people on the pickier side due to the limited options.

One of my very favorite golf courses. It really doesn’t get any better than this. A must to add to your bucket list. Not cheap, but still worth it at least once.

I’m sure by now you’ve heard the old proverbial saying «If you looked up the definition of Perfect, you would see a picture of…» Well, perfect is here, perfect is the ocean course, the Ryder Cup Bar and Grill and it’s employee’s.
I’m not going to write about the course, God started it first and man brought a lawn mower. I’m writing this review about the operation. Disney couldn’t run it better. First the pro shop on the ocean course. I met a gentleman named «Dick» a finer person you will not fined amoungst the golfing community, I wish I had employees like him, I wouldn’t have gone grey so early.
At the Ryder Cup Bar and Grill I met a wonderful Venezuelan hostess, she was vibrant, positive and maintained a very professional aura. Our server was equally as professional.
I could have just hung out there for hours, the place is beautiful, historic and they have quality employees.

Amazing course. Very long but and challenging but well worth it. The views are stunning.

Attended the 94^th PGA here… gorgeous course, gorgeous view!

it was great i loved the view, it was spectactular. i reccomend coming here!

Visited here twice, very pleased both times with the food and the cool servers. You HAVE to get the sliders while sitting out on the porch. Carmelized onions, blue cheese, other spices: those sliders are simply awesome! That is all.

I have yet to play the course but their bar is fantastic. They have great food and it is probably the best place to be on the Island at sunset. I can not wait to be there again.

the sun can be merciless so pack the block. after 18 holes here my legs were burnt red. i don’t recall ever getting a sunburn on my legs before.
according to my caddy my tee shot (7-​iron into the wind) on #14 was the closest to the pin he’d ever seen.
