Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum

A must stop when you are in Key West. Very interesting place with a lot of info about Hemingway on display. The cats are there and everywhere. He sure loved his cats! They have a lot of outdoor area to play, little cat houses to sleep in and interesting ways to get in the house. They are so docile and probably get tired of being pet so much. Saw one six toed cat, he was sweet. Go to the gift shop where you can buy exact copies of the cat dishes that Hemingway fed his cats out of. One of his wives designed the dishes and they are very attractive. They sell books and a lot of other interesting items. A cat cemetery is also on the premises. A great place to visit.

After touring the Hemingway house, I found much more closure in his writing. Contrary to what I previously thought, I’m actually more of a novice when it comes to the history of America’s Literary Poster Child. The guided tour was filled with constant information being thrown at me that I suggest bringing a baseball glove to catch it all.
The house and surrounding grounds are well-​kept, but still an accurate depiction of the days in which he occupied the space. There’s a small gift shop that was actually very reasonably priced. You can tell the tour guides are history buffs who have a passion for storytelling. Not only do you learn about Hemingway, but also important facts about Key West that aren’t normally shared.
I’m not a cat dude by any means, so beware of the 50 cats that are on property. Trust me, they won’t bother you at all. Admission fee is $ 13 (cash only). Seeing his Writing Room alone is a humbling experience. You can’t put a price tag on American History. I loved every second of it and would do it all over again tomorrow!

Been here twice over the years and both times I’ve been I’ve learned and/​or noticed something different. Beautiful place and so rich in history. If you have a good 2 – 3 hours in key west it’s worth it to go to this historical gem.

One of the must see stop in Key West is the Ernest Hemingway House. It became a museum after he passed away. It’s not only a museum; it also became a national historical landmark recognized by the Congress of united Sate.
We wanted to take our mom inside but she is only interested taking some photo ups in front of the house. The ticket was about $ 13.00 if I recall, but cash only, no credit cards.
One thing I notice that there were a lot of cats on the property. There were a lot of rumors about these cats, but we are both dog persons so we didn’t really care… LOL!
For us, it’s just a check it off the list thing. I will only go back there again if I were taking friends or family there for the first time.

Amazing place to visit while in key west. Whether you are a fan of Ernest’s books or not, it is amazing to see the way he lived while in key west. The house is beautiful and has so much history everyone will find something they like, whether it’s the dozens of cats that may or may not have 6 toes or the amazing pool in the backyard that has a pretty good story behind it. The tour is great and the gift shop has all of the writings the great American writer authored.

Once upon a time… A young, vibrant maiden– circumstances still unknown– strangely found herself in a foreign place known as Key West. Confused and dazed about her current whereabouts, and not quite sure what had led her to such a place, she walked and walked until she came upon a house…
Alright, so I’m not a writer and I’m not going to bore you with the rest of that awful story. :P I had orginally visited the Hemingway House back in 2007. Yeah, I know, almost ten years so my memory of that said visit might be a little fuzzy but figured it warranted a mention for my fellow Unilocalers.
This was part of a mini vacation and quite frankly, I don’t even think I can count that as a vacation since the whole trip to Key West barely rounded up to a day. Seeing as we were staying just a few blocks away from the house, we decided to give it a go since it’s supposed to be one of the top tourist attractions down there.
Now, the overall tour was very informative. Our guide knew his stuff and all things Hemingway. I would say the tour itself was about 30 minutes long. The house isn’t that big and as he takes you from room to room he had a story to tell you about each one.
Admission will cost you 13 smackaroos for adults and 6 for kids! Honestly, if you’re a big Hemingway fan, or just a big novelist buff in general, then this is the place for you. For those of us who aren’t, then you probably wouldn’t want to go and spend your money to look at a house full of cats and hear about some guy you vaguely remember from English class in high school.
Speaking of cats, those suckers are every where! And, in case you didn’t know, the cats at the Hemingway house have six toes. How does one even get one cat with six toes, let alone a whole army of them?!
Considering that they keep the house how it was originally, there is no a/​c in this house. There are a few fans throughout the place but walking there and in this killer heat, the no a/​c was a but of a bummer! :/​You will be hot!
The tour can get pretty packed so all those bodies stacked up against each other, each one sweating on some stranger… If you don’t like that type of thing then maybe this isn’t the place for you.
I found the place to be very nice. The landscape outside was kinda shady as you walked around the property after the tour. Not much to see outside except for some more cats and a pool and some foliage.
For me, it was a one time thing. If I ever find myself in the Keys again, it probably won’t be on my itinerary.

This is a must see in Key West. With so much to learn and see this is a great 30 minute tour and a cool down on a hot summer day in Key West.
The tour guide is very entertaining and definitely knows a lot about Hemingway.
The house is in great condition and it’s fun to spot all the cats. Try and find a six toed one and your luck might just change! :)
I wouldn’t miss this regardless of having to pay to get inside.

Do you love cats? Go here. You can pet them, take their pictures. Sure, the history is fun and all, but more importantly, cats. So many of them. The tour guides give them treats, and they’re so chill (the cats, not the tour guides). (I guess the tour guides were pretty chill, too, but they’re not cats so who cares?) Anyway, go here and enjoy what heaven is probably like.

Tourist attractions, interesting stories about Hemingway and six-​tones cats. Many many many cats, there’s about 53 of them.

There are probably dozens of writers I like better than Ernest Hemingway, but there’s no denying his stature in the landscape of American literature. He’s one of the most famous personalities in the fiction tradition, and he spent important periods of his life in Key West. The Hemingway House is a top tourist attraction in town, the only one we had time to visit on our trip last week. It was very busy, and I doubt most of the visitors were avid readers. Hemingway is just such a large figure that it seems properly American to pay respects.
My husband and I went on Friday afternoon, while we waited for a table to open up at Blue Heaven. This turns out to be a good combination – apparently Hemingway used to referee boxing matches at Blue Heaven. It was crowded, with a line at the ticket booth whenever we happened to look. Tickets were $ 13 apiece and, annoyingly, cash only. We had to hunt down an ATM, wasting precious time on our only free afternoon in town.
We got in just in time to catch the beginning of a free tour (I think these happen regularly). The tour guide was fun, well practiced in the art of lionizing/​joking about Hemingway. He took us through the main house and the garden/​pool, and we took a side trip to look at the little detached studio where Hemingway did his writing. We learned plenty of trivia about the man and his wives and adventures. Turns out he didn’t buy this house with his fortune – one of his wives’ uncles just handed it to him. The house itself was quite nice, even by contemporary standards.
It was also overrun by a crew of 53 cats, who added quite a lot of cuteness to the tour. (The ticket fees pay for their care, apparently.) Our tour guide told us the first one we saw, lounging on Hemingway’s bed, was taxidermied there and we almost believed him. That cat startled a couple Korean tourists.
We took a few pictures and left the tour early to get lunch. It was a fun visit. Hemingway may not have known how to write, oh, female characters, but for better or worse (better: he wrote some worthwhile classics in an enduring, distinctive literary style; worse: whole lotta mediocre white dude fiction writers idolize and imitate him) he’s left a lasting mark on the history of American literature. I spend most of my time reading and writing, so this felt a bit like a pilgrimage. The Hemingway House is a monument to the importance of fiction, and I’m glad it brings people together to commune with a literary ghost and his dozens of live cats.

We paid $ 13.00 each and spent maybe 15 minutes on the property. Now, don’t get me wrong. I graduated with an English Lit degree and Hemingway is my jam, man, so I get it. The house is symbolic of how he lived and how he wrote… about love, war, loss… AND CATS. Wait, cats? YES, CATS.
Honestly, I consider my $ 13.00 cash well-​spent if only to take care of the adorable balls of fluff that are now the permanent residents of the Hemingway House.
The place was really crowded and it was hard to take time to truly appreciate any of the installations. Every time I turned a corner, I was faced with a massive crowd that was following a guided tour so I would backtrack and then find myself faced with crowds of people milling around, staring blankly at the art or furniture… not moving… so I just gave up and searched for cats. And my search was not in vain. Oh no.
There was even a cat hanging out on a chair in the women’s rest room. He was particularly friendly and we became fast friends. The last time I let someone into the bathroom with me was college… you know… when you go to the bathroom with three of your girlfriends and everyone else does the pee dance in the line as you take 15 minutes to cycle through? Yeah. So, the gray cat kept me company while I peed. Then, he went outside, let my husband pet him and used the litter box. And by litter box, I mean he just peed where he was standing. Jel-​us.
I loved all the cats, and I loved the idea behind the house. I just didn’t love the crowded space. Had I been given some time to quietly reflect on the history of the house and the serenity that Hemingway was undoubtedly creating for himself in this home, I think it would have been far more impactful.
Am I glad I went? Yes. Was it worth $ 13.00? Probably not. HOWEVER. Cats.

Have some cash with you! They don’t accept credit cards. It’s $ 13 adult admission. Luckily I had just enough $ with me when I got there. Also, tips at this place appreciated (you’ll see the sign at the end of your tour). I felt so bad for not having any cash left, our tour guide did a great job by telling us lots of interesting and funny stories! Glad I finally made it there!
For cat lovers– «your» pets are everywhere, descendants of those who lived on this property with Hemingway himself. Some of them have even six toes!

You have got to go on the tour of this museum, it’s fascinating and entertaining in a kitschy sort of way. The staff know their stuff and are completely enamored by Hemingway which makes it fascinating and sort of humorous.
I originally wanted to come here to see the six-​toed cats since cats are my favorite. CATS! The cats didn’t disappoint, they’re all over and some of them do indeed have six toes. Some walk up to you, others hide… not surprising.
The grounds are beautiful. They were preparing the outside for a wedding which looked amazing.
Hemingway was an interesting fella. He liked his women and booze. And apparently thought a great deal of himself as our tour guide never neglected to not emphasize!
Super fun. Go, for the love of cats, man!

If you are a fan of Hemingway, this museum is a must-​see. If you’re not a fan, the Hemingway house is STILL a must-​see!
The Hemingway House was one of my favorite destinations in Key West. The house and grounds were gorgeous. I’ve never encountered a 6-​toed cat before this, but tons of them roamed around the property freely and added more charm to the museum. Our tour guide was authentic, funny, and extremely knowledgeable about Hemingway’s life and the history of the house. After the tour, we were allowed to walk around the property at our own pace and enjoy our time there.

I read «The Sun Also Rises» in school and so I was interested in visiting the Ernest Hemingway House. The home, yard, and grounds are interesting to see with descendants of Hemingway’s cats roaming around freely. The tour guide told fascinating stories of Hemingway’s colorful life including his many women.
You are free to take photos inside the house although when I went, there were so many people that you need to wait for the rooms to clear out before trying to take various photos.
If you have read any of Hemingway’s work, you may want to visit his home and hear stories that inspired some of his novels.

Our tour guide was absolutely amazing he covered so much in the like half hour tour. There was so much background I did not know about Hemingway and the stories he told were amazing.
There are Cats everywhere and they are super friendly and will walk up to you and want to be pet.

What is there to say that hasn’t already been covered? The place is a great stop while you’re in Key West. Even though I’m not typically a huge fan of getting «the tour» at places, it is worth it to follow the crowd here. You get a lot of background on the home and Hemingway in the stories told by the tour leaders. And while I still refuse to pick up «The Sun Also Rises» again after slogging through it in high school, I love hearing about island life and architecture of the day.
And the cats! All the polydactyl kittens with mittens :) They are all gorgeous little things, well cared for and either playing hide-&-seek with the humans or pretending they don’t exist. It’s the perfect lazy afternoon for your average cat lady to just loll about with the kitties in the yard under a tree.
So, whether you’re a huge Hemingway fan, or you need to get away from your family for an hour, or you just need something to do after the hangover wears off before dinner, stop by. It’s the proper tourist thing to do and you can learn a little something.

It was great to be able to visit Hemingway’s house in the condition that he left it. And the 6-​toed cats mostly descendants of his famous cat also live here and are well cared for. His typewriter is on the desk and the funny part is how the cats guard it. I thought of my favorite book «Old Man and The Sea,» while touring the quaint house and grounds. They only accept cash as payment, but I highly recommend if you’re a literary fan or enjoy his writings.

The Ernest Hemingway House is the quintessential Key West tourist destination. It’s one of the few destinations that I found it Key West that is always packed with tourists.
The house itself is pretty substantial, and so you have to go on a guided tour. I think that’s what’s somewhat unknown about the house, because when you show up, there’s probably a line out the door — but those people are just standing around waiting for the next tour. As soon as that tour starts, the line disappears. There’s been a few times where I thought the line was out of control, only to have it evaporate on the next tour, so keep that in mind and don’t be discouraged if there are a lot of people milling about outside.
The tour itself was comprehensive, but I’m glad they had many artifacts from his time while in Key West. There was enough interpretation and guidance along the way so that you could put Ernest Hemingway’s stay in Key West in the context of his life before he went to Cuba.
They also have a very nice event space outside, but half the time there’s a marquee up.
Highly recommend a visit. They also have a steep military discount.

CATS!
Sure, Hemingway lived here too but the main attraction is CATS!
This was my 4^th time here, I always learn something new on the tours. I don’t come to really learn about Hemingway anymore though, I’m here for the cats. And I never leave disappointed. So many beautiful cats to pet!
They have some basic rules, think of the cats like they are strippers. You can look, but unless the stripper/​cat invites you too, do not touch. And do NOT pick them up. That will get you ejected and/​or frowned upon. I found about half of the cats are welcome to a pet or two, half want nothing to do with humans. Nothing wrong with that.
Come here early in the morning when they first open. In the afternoons they are packed with cruise ship people.

This museum/​tour was the best part of my Key West weekend! The house and the grounds are so extremely well maintained you feel like you have been transported to another time. The house is true to it’s 1800 architecture while still having the 1940s charm of Hemingway. I’m a huge cat lover and couldn’t wait to meet the famous 6 toed cats. The cats are everywhere and this feature makes the museum especially charming. They are all mostly friendly and aren’t afraid of the guests. Our tour guide, JOE, was friendly, funny, charmingu, and genuinely passionate about the material. Especially the cats! He knew every cat by name and had a little story about each one. He knew the answer to every question the group threw at him and still managed to elaborate on each topic point. He really made our tour exceptional. I can not wait to come again.

Useful tip: please remember to take cash before visiting. This place doesn’t accept cards, so be sure get cash (13 bucks per adult) and it will save you some time

This was one of my favorite things to do in key west. The kitties are adorable, and the staff are very knowledgeable about them (their names, personalities of individual cats, where each cat likes to hang out, lineage). The yard is absolutely beautiful, and there are quiet little places to sit.
The house is nicely done and the tour guides are knowledgeable about the history. Our tour guide, Bob, put on a great show.
Another reviewer mentioned there was no A/​C, which is not true. There were little circular blowers on the floor blowing cold air. They blend in with the floor very well — an awesome feature in a historical home — but they definitely blew cold air.
After the tour this is a great place to read outdoors! Plenty of shade, beautiful scenery, and benches in quiet* nooks to read. The bookstore has bookmark, too.
*quiet ish. There is some background chatter but if you ever read in ski lodges, on the beach, or in coffee houses you will be just fine!

Overall I thought the 30-​minute tour (well my tour actually lasted 45-​minute) was slightly underwhelming and our tour guide was trying too hard to be funny. With that being said, there were still some highlights worth mentioning:
* There was a total of 54 cats in the Hemingway Home (most of them are six-​toed cats) and some cats are direct descendants of Snow White, Hemingway’s original six-​toed cat.
* After the tour was finished, our tour guide recommended everyone to check out Hemingway’s writing studio where he spent 9 years and wrote 70% of his life’s work (e.g. Farewell to Arms, Death in the Afternoon, and To Have and Have Not).
* Pauline Pfeiffer, Hemingway’s second wife, torn down Hemingway’s boxing ring and spent $ 20,000 to build Key West’s first swimming pool.
Few additional notes;
* Key West’s humidity was killing me. No A/​C in the house, only fans.
* Feel free to take as many pictures as you want.
* $ 10 minimum for credit card transactions inside the gift shop
* Ticket is $ 13.00 per adult; however, I got combination tickets (Little White House + Hemingway House) at the Little White House for a total of $ 24.90 (tickets cost $ 3~$ 4 more if I buy each ticket separately).
Whether you’ve read «The Old Man and the Sea» or never read any of his works, Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum is still worth a quick visit. Nonetheless, I think the Harry Truman Little White House tour was better than Hemingway Home tour due to more experienced tour guide and A/​C in the Little White House.

I have to be honest, I have never read a thing this man wrote.
But the legend of his books and movies is well known. He is probably Key West’s most famous resident. We had a ticket package we got on the previous day that saved some change for this tour. Nice not to have to wait in line for tickets. Beautiful lush yard secluded behind a tall stone wall. The house is well kept and had much of the original furnishings plus added pictures and movie posters. You can spend as much time as you like wandering the house and grounds. You can also jump into a guided tour. I recommend tour first for lots of info, then stroll around taking the time to read and check out things more closely.
Cats galore– many six toed cats that have the life of Riley here. Well feed and taken care of. Heck one even was asleep in Hemingway’s bed, but it’s roped off from visitors.
Recommend this tour early in the day or on a cloudy day. It can get a little stuffy.

This was pretty much the best (historical) house tour I have ever been on. Our tour guide was funny, sprightly, informative, knowledgeable, and interesting. Yes, all of those things throughout the entire tour! It was a younger guy, wish I could remember his name. He does know all names of the 52 cats on the property.
Anyway, this tour was a lot of fun. It wasn’t overly long, but you learn a bunch about Ernest Hemingway’s life. I don’t want to give anything away, because I want everyone to experience it themselves first-​hand! It was also nice that we didn’t linger too long in one room, so the changing scenery kept the interest going. Plus, you can stay after the tour ends and revisit any of the rooms or outdoor areas on your own.
On the day that I went, there was a wedding about to happen. Apparently, numerous weddings occur on the grounds there every year. The décor was great.
For $ 13 per adult, you get to know more about the home and lifestyles of those who lived there. You learn about how things came to be, and you see random cats roam around. You’ll even see the ones with six toes.
Bottom line: for good reason, this is a popular tourist attraction. It is different from any other tour; the guides are upbeat and genuine! You will leave wanting to read every single Ernest Hemingway novel.

Ernest Hemingway is one of my personal heroes, because I read «Old Man and the Sea» as a young teen and it made me want to write books myself. I’m aware that many people view him in a ‘hate him or love him’ light, and that’s fine. Still, you should visit the home and museum and see what it’s all about.
For $ 13 (for adults) you get to walk in and see every room, every cat and the gift shop for literally as long as you want. They don’t kick you out after a tour, so you could literally hang out there for as long as Hemingway did many, many decades ago. (OK, so maybe you can’t stay 70 years, but you get the idea.)
The first thing you notice is how well kept the house still is. The architecture of the home and the grounds on which it sits is quite impressive — I even said to a friend that I would love to live in such a home. As part of a tour (which is optional but everyone seems to do it), the guide gives you background into Hemingway’s life: his career, his inspirations, his many wives and his plethora of six-​toed cats (there are about 60 cats on the grounds, and you can pet them and take photos of them). The tour guide was awesome, just seemed really invested in Hemingway’s history and he had a unique sense of wonder that came through in his own voice.
The tour itself only lasts about 15 – 20 minutes, but it’s informative enough so that it doesn’t bore spectators as if it was a history lesson. You get to view Hemingway’s living room, dining area, master bedroom, bathroom, backyard (with pool), and even the separate area where he worked. His original typewriter still sits there, and his cats guard it! It’s crazy cool. Actually, only one or two people can go see his work area at a time because it’s gated off to obviously prevent damage to the items.
The gift shop itself allows Hemingway fanatics to purchase his literature, you can buy pins and magnets to commemorate the trip, or you can buy notebooks that you can write in yourself. When you go up to the register to pay, a cat will probably be sitting there waiting for you…
If you’re in Key West and either like Hemingway, or like history — then you have to visit this place. $ 13 isn’t that much to see a piece of history, and it’s enjoyable and won’t take up all your tourist time, either. As far as I’m concerned, it’s one of the true gems of the Keys.

My husband and I visited the Ernest Hemingway museum last week, with little Hemingway knowledge but came away wanting to read his work and learn more!
I love old houses and architecture and my husband was keen to visit the property while in Key West, although typically it isn’t his thing. He LOVED the tour that Tyler gave, key points highlighted with a side of humor, it really made our visit! I would definitely go along with the tour when visiting as you learn so much more than you would wandering around on your own. We took the tour first and then went back to look at things when it was less busy.
I loved seeing the cats everywhere and they all appeared friendly and used to having people around.
After having done these type of tours and visits for many years, I consider this one to be on the pricey side for one hour of entertainment, but if you want to see it, you just have to suck it up and pay!

So, I already knew a lot about Hemingway before this visit. One of my bailiwicks is the writers of the 1920s (The Algonquin Round Table and their extended circle of friends in Paris, and from there the group that expanded in Antibes thanks largely to expatriate socialites Sara and Gerald Murphy… okay I will shut up now).
But honestly, Hemingway was kind of a dick. Beyond just the machismo thing of big game hunting and bullfighting that everyone knows, he was also always hitting on friends’ wives and bullying other guys (poor Scott Fitzgerald…). I appreciate that his writing was unique for the time and definitely was a fresh literary style post-​war, but I’m soured by knowing what kind of person he was.
But my parents wanted to see his house. I agreed because, CATS! Lots of cats. Most of which are the polydactyls (no, not dinosaurs; it means they have six toes. Yes, really).
The house admittedly is cool. We had a smart and witty older gentleman as our guide (who put his foot in his mouth thinking that a long-​haired pre-​teen boy in the tour group was a girl, lol), though they still gloss over some details (ex: I clarified for my parents that Hemingway’s boat the «Pilar» was named because that was his second wife Pauline’s code name during their affair when he was still married to wife #1 Hadley).
Did I mention CATS?! Oh I did. Well, let me say it again. Because they are everywhere, and the staff totally encourages them by dispensing treats at every turn. They are on the furniture (labeled «Help us preserve history, please do not sit,» haha), sleeping on the shelves in the gift shop, lounging outside, etc. They’re all named after famous people, and staff were running around saying things like, «Have you seen Rudolph Valentino?» It was funny to see the little ones get hyper and run halfway up a palm tree only to realize that they couldn’t get back down. There’s also an elaborate cat cemetery for all the dear departed.
I also enjoyed the inclusion of a penny smasher machine on the back porch, so if you can’t live without Papa’s face in your pocket, they’ve got the hookup.
Overall, Hemingway is still kind of a dick, but his house is neat, and it’s definitely worth it for the cats. This is also an irrevocable piece of Key West history, so if you’re looking for the full local experience it’s definitely part of it.

Whilst I’m not the biggest of Hemingway, it’s worth the look. This 3200 square feet home is one block from Duval Street in quaint Key West. After you pay the admission ($ 13 at the time of this review), aka a guided tour provided every ¹⁵⁄₃₀ minutes, depending on the day.
Things to notice:
–Hemingway’s master bedroom headboard. It was a gate to a monastery in Spain.
–the pool which was built by Hemingway’s third wife while he was having an affair in Europe at a whopping cost of $ 20,000 in the days of the Great Depression!
–the six-​toed cats (54 on the property) who are direct descendants of the originals Hemingway collected for good luck. They are extremely friendly!
Enjoy the visit as the guides are passionate about Hemingway and his work and respectful of you aren’t familiar with his work at the same time. A nice balance I think.

I have been waiting to go to the Keys and the Hemingway House for what seems like forever. The entry is $ 13, cash only. There are no discounts for AAA, students, seniors, etc. The home itself is lovely and the gardens are well-​kept and shady.
While the tour-​guide was friendly and funny, I was disappointed in the lack of personal items in the home. This tour will basically walk you through the Asa Tift House (purchased by Pauline Hemingway’s uncle) and then you will stop in various rooms and look at pictures on the wall while the tour-​guide tells you about Hemingway’s life and the people in the images. This is the first home tour I have done that discussed just two particular home items (the master bed and the dresser.) I have experienced many home tours with so many more items on display that were personal to the homeowner, and this was completely lacking on this tour.
The six-​toed cats were cute, so were the five-​toed cats. They were quite friendly and with 50 or so cats on the property, they could be found everywhere. The small gift shop has a terrible cat urine odor (not an issue anywhere else) and the shop only takes debit/​credit if you spend $ 25.00 or more. There is an atm for smaller amounts but what is the point if you will end up with a 6 dollar fee from the atm and your own bank and the minimum is $ 20.00. At that point, you can just buy some extra souvenirs and I am pretty sure the Hemingway House gift shop knows that will happen.
I was hoping to love this tour but it may well be the worst home tour I have ever been on. Again, not due to the guide, but due to the lack of home items, and the basics one expects to see in a preserved home.

If you’re going to go to Key West you might as well come here. I mean, there’s really no way around it. The town basically runs off of that and alcohol. The entrance fee is a little pricey but you can stay as long as you want-​and the house itself is beautiful. We jumped into a tour that had just started our guide was informative and fun. She was pretty thorough and after going through the bookstore we overheard another a tour and felt like we had a better experience.
The six-​toed cats, all had names, all of which our guide seemed to know. She had treats for them and let us all take our time around the different spots along the house. She answered a lot of questions that group had and stuck around a little at the end to answer more questions. Definitely a ‘must’ and it’s worth it.

Das Haus ist wirklich interessant. Nicht nur von der Geschichte her, sondern von der ganzen Atmosphäre. Wenn man sich ein bisschen Mühe gibt, kommen von überall her die 6 zehigen Katzen angerannt und wollen gekrault werden und mitten im Museum flätzt eine Katze auf dem abgesperrten Bett. Und überall fühlt man die Gegenwart des großen Künstlers.
Das Hemingway Haus ist ein absolutes MUSS, wenn man nach Key West kommt. Und man kann sich dort durchaus mehrere Stunden aufhalten. Sehr empfehlenswert: Der Besuch des Katzenfriedhofs. Hier liegen u.a. Marilyn Monroe, Zaza Gabor und Tom Hanks begraben…

Want to see cats with six toes? Well, then this is the place to go! It’s the home of Ernest Hemingway or at least it was until she blew his brains out!
It’s a decent sized property and most of the staff is very insightful and helpful when explaining what each room has going on. Plus, there are a ton of cats! They are all friendly, but are in their lazy mode as it’s pretty freaking hot here! They were barely moving.
For $ 13 I expected it to be a bit more impressive, but alas it was wasn’t much. However, if you’re an Ernest Hemingway fan, then you must check this place out or you will be haunted by the fact that you didn’t for the rest of your life! Plus, cats!

A must-​see, not just for Hemingway fans & English majors, but for anyone interested in the history of the early part of the 20^th century & the «Lost Generation.» I expected a rather dry tour, but our guide Tyler made the stories come alive. Hemingway was the prototype of the larger-​than-​life author/​adventurer, and you can feel his ghostly presence in every room of the house. It’s a wee bit eerie, if you are sensitive to such things.
The cats, of course, are a favorite part of the tour. Tyler knew every one of them by name, although we suspected he was BS’ing us a couple of times. Nevertheless, I asked him to help me find a particular cat (Harry S Truman — what can I say, I’m from the Kansas City area) and he agreeably pointed him out to me near the end of the tour when we encountered old Harry sleeping under a bush. The cats all appeared to be in excellent health, well cared-​for and happy to be petted by many adoring strangers.
The gift shop was tiny but had many interesting items… including a cat napping on the printer :-)
Rich in history, don’t miss.

This place was freaking awesome. I always enjoy visiting places where amazing things happened. The best part are the guided tours where you obtain in-​depth knowledge regarding one’s background and what led them to do whatever epic thing they did.
They offer the free tours about every hour. Our guide, Bob Smith, was quite the riot with his dry humor. He was very knowledgeable on Hemingway as well.
This is easily the best thing you can do in Key West, even if you know nothing of Hemingway. It’s history you need to learn about. Do not miss this one if you’re there!

Casa e museu onde morou Ernest por alguns anos entre idas e vindas para Cuba.
Boa parada para visita por $ 13 cada pessoa (Jul/​2014) com direito a banheiro limpo e um espaço de quase ¼ de quarteirão de espaço. A casa tem mostra de objetos usados por Ernest, quadros com pôsteres de filmes baseados em obras e eventualmente gatos de 6 dedos descendentes.
A casa está na rua de trás da Duval, tem um ponto de parada do ônibus oficial tipo sobe e desce quando quer durante o dia (hop on, hop off). No verão é realmente quente e há ventiladores em vários cômodos, mas é bom evitar horários cheios.
Bônus, uma varanda onde você pode tirar um tempo para ler algumas obras!

Schönes Ausflugsziel, jedoch etwas teuer. Katzenfreunde kommen auf ihre Kosten. Sein Erbe umfasst viele viele viele Katzen. Sicherlich ein muss in key West

Sehr nettes museum. allerdings duerfen die katzen mit den beruehmten sechs zehen dort mehr als die besucher;)

Ein sehr romantisches Anwesen. Viele Katzen und wohl einer der ältesten Pools auf den Keys. man bekommt ein sehr reelles Feeling wie der gute Hemmingway gelebt hat ;-)

Ich liebe Key West, war 5 x dort und jedes Mal wieder begeistert vom Hemmingway House! Es ist ein sooooo wunderschoener Ort! Auch wenn es wimmelt von Urlaubern– die tolle Atmosphaere bleibt!

Wenn man schon auf Key West gelandet ist, bietet es sich an, das Haus eines großen Schriftsteller anzuschauen. Man kann hier sehen wie Hemingway mit seiner 2. Ehefrau Pauline 1931 bis 1940 gelebt hat.
