Living in Key Biscayne(again) temporarily, I was initially concerned. I am so used to LA Fitness and their countless weights, many barbells and large space. I was concerned about doing my day to day workouts at the Key Biscayne Community Center(KBCS). Well, I was wrong. KBCS has a very clean, well laid out, and functional weight room. They have enough dumbbells and barbells to handle the volume of people they have(I haven’t worked out there right at 6pm — the typical heavy time — but my normal time is around 7pm, and it’s not bad at all). The staff is kind and courteous and it’s really hard to beat the location. I have two(small) issues that prevent me from giving it 5 stars: 1. Lack of Hammer Strength equipment. Now, free weights are the best, but there are certain Hammer Strength machines(they use the same plates as barbells) that make a world of difference. Lacking those does bother me, so I ended up keeping my LA Fitness membership for certain workouts. Unfortunate, but understandable due to lack of space. 2. Iffy cardio machines(specifically elliptical). Now, you may be wondering why I even care, considering it is beautiful outside. Well, while that’s true, I enjoy the elliptical and doing HIIT there, especially days where I don’t want to bash my knees while running several miles. The ellipticals they do have have a problem where they reach a max speed(rendering me unable to do HIIT sprints) or they get so shaky and noisy I think they’re going to break. I never had this issue with the ellipticals I used at LA Fitness. KBCS does a lot of things well, including the countless activities and happenings outside of the weight room. It seems to be a real community center, drawing people of all ages. Their pool is also top notch, no complaints there. If you live on Key Biscayne, you can purchase a membership for less than other gyms around Miami. You typically buy it on a yearly plan, so you pay one lump sum, but it comes out less per month. If you decide to do it with monthly charges, then you will end up paying more than other gyms. All in all, the KBCS is a great place to be!

If you live on the Key, you can’t beat the prices and commute to the gym at the Key Biscayne Community Center. The equipment is decent enough and the members are friendly.
