For us this was very much a «get what you pay for». Pros: great price for a mini van, Chris was very responsive, easy to p/​u and drop off. Cons: A/​C worked 25% of the time, it STUNK like rotten milk, a few times we thought the van was on fire, it smelled like smoking engine. Back windows didn’t open (bad for those in back with no A/​C and rotten milk smell) we just hoped it would keep running from point A to point B!
It was CHEAP, that’s for sure, but the quality of the vehicle kept us from doing as much adventuring as we would have liked to do, no one wanted to spend that much time in it… oh well… saved money I guess

After my husband read reviews on other car rentals, he booked with Gingerbread rent a car. Boy, he made the right choice. We had friends who were on the same flight as us coming in and rented from another company. They waited an hour and half for their car rental. We had no wait Chris picked us up and got us in the car in minutes. He helps with your luggage and gives you the car right away. You don’t need to deal with lengthy waits and car inspections. They’re older cars, but we didn’t mind it. We fell in love with driving around Kauai and Gingerbread car rental will be our first choice again when we come back.

Chris was AMAZING! We rented a mini van from him and it was great. He is reliable, easy to work with and provides an amazing service. We will rent from him again! A wonderful family owned and operated business!

Great experience and would absolutely recommend! The cars were not new or fancy but we’re perfect for beaching and exploring the island with our family. The service was amazing and they were very helpful and responsive. My only recommendation for improvement would be to have the car seat latch system installed in the vehicles. Most manufacturers install for free and it’s so much safer for families with car seats!

Recommend you consider renting from these folks. We rented an older Sante Fe SUV for 5 days. It was clean, drove great and everything worked as it should! Chris was easy to work with and how nice to be picked up by someone who cares about their business and the island! We will definitely rent from them again on our next trip.

Excellent experience! Chris picked us up at baggage claim, took us to a resort where the cars are «staged» and we signed the paperwork and we were off. We rented a white Volvo 850 wagon for 8 days and it was $ 200! We saved quite a bit of money vs. the big guys and supported a local businesses at the same time. The car ran great without any issues. We will rent from Gingerbread on our next trip to Hawaii.

Rented a mini-​van from Chris for 15 day stay for my family of 6. we were looking for 3 things — a reasonable rental rate, a vehicle that didn’t scream «here come some haoles», and relative ease. Gingerbread delivered on all 3 fronts. Chris picked us up at the airport with our luggage. We signed a document with him and were on our way in no time in a 2000 odyssey that worked as expected — no automatic doors and a slight dent on the back, but probably cost less than half of what the big boys would charge. Felt great to give some business to a local owner as well. Two thumbs up for sure.

I had a very good experience with Gingerbread Rent-​A-​Car center. They were highly recommended to us by another car rental company that was full. Very personable and at the same time professional and most of all… affordable! Cars are clean, in good condition WITH A/​C! Chris took my reservation and his wife confirmed it via email. He asked for our flight number and was there upon our arrival. Gave us the keys and we were on our way. On our last day, he text me telling me where to drop off the car and that was it. It was the easiest car rental experience I’ve ever had. I highly recommend Gingerbread Rent-​A-​Car Center if you are traveling to Kauai!

Rented a minivan for 7 days and only paid $ 280. They were waiting with the car outside of baggage claim. Pick up and drop off was super easy. The car itself was very clean and ran like a champ. I was able to save a bunch of money by using this company. I highly recommend them!

This is a small company, but they are very very accommodating, outstanding service, i really really recommend this place to anyone wanting to rent a car in Kauai at an extremely reasonable price! They rent by the week or by the month! The cars are not junk, they are family cars, well maintained, and I truly urge everyone visiting Kauai to rent from these guys!
I rented the 1996 Toyota Rav4. What a cute car! Obviously the car has been repainted, it looks really clean. The tires are brand new, the rims are still shiny. The car is clean on the inside, 2+2 seating arrangement. i folded the rear seats down completely so I used it for storage. It was a PERFECT car for 2 people. Manual windows, no sunroof, has a roof rack and the whole swag feeling of «I’m in Hawaii and this is a perfect car for it.» The A/​C works great, the transmission was smooth, the engine, though not particularly powerful, was enough to get us around. The gas mileage is very good, also! Oh, one tip about the car: The car does feel like it’s overheating. I checked water every day before leaving, and I added water because it was almost empty. The radio did not work at the time, that was a huge bummer. I hope they fixed it. Otherwise, everything else is good to go! Although i did wish this car had 4×4… there was one particular time when I really needed it… uhh… not going to talk about that. Lol.
I really felt like a local, though actually this is probably the only 2 door Rav4 on the whole island, so i kind of stood out, but not in a «I’m a freakin tourist» sense.
Got the car for 4 days, they only charge me for 4 days! How honest is that? Simple paperwork, Chris picked us up at the airport, then we left the car back where we find it. No hassle, no wasted time, no extra fees whatsoever! You pay for only what you agreed upon, no BS.
A++ to this company, try it, people! You will not feel ripped off like all other major companies. They are very honest, very accommodating, very friendly, I will always use them again.

These guys are awesome! Not only are they less than half the price of a big name rental, they are waiting for you right outside the baggage claim area with your vehicle! We were three couples staying together but wanting our own cars. These three cars are somewhat older and were not super pretty, but they ran like champs! Plus, you get treated as a local which is a big plus. The one time we had a question about something, Chris immediately came and checked it out, and though it was nothing he said we would be welcome to another vehicle if ours (2000 Volvo) became undrivable. The drop off is just as easy as the pickup– text him when you are driving to the airport and he will be there. I highly recommend them!

Can’t say enough good things about Gingerbread Car Rental in Kapaa Kauai.
After checking out pricing for weeks with the Major National Car Rental scammers on Kauai, ($ 1300 for an 8 day car rental… WTF!?) I contacted Gingerbread car rental by email. They responded quickly and told me to scan my insurance card and drivers license… once they got the scanned document by email the car was mine.
Called a few days before I left for Kauai and gave them my credit card info. Arrived in Lihue at 1pm and called their cell number at the baggage claim and they were waiting with the car right near the loading zone. Signed the docs and we were on our way.
The car (a 2003 Neon) worked great and had brand new tires. Drove it daily all over the Island and didn’t even use a full tank over 8 days… so the MPG had to be pretty high.
Topped off the tank and dropped it off an hour before our flight out and that was that!
Total cost: $ 200 for 8 days…$ 200 would have barely paid for a 1 day rental with the big boys. And the money went to the locals and wasn’t siphoned off the Island to pay for some East Coast Executive to buy another toy.
