Murray’s Ice Creams & Cookies

Fantastic ice cream. Make this place a priority stop whenever we are in town. New family tradition.

Krackle caramel ice cream — 5 stars. Mint chip ice cream — 2 stars — just average.
Customer service by the older woman bringing out a batch of freshly baked cookies — BIG FAT «F» — 0 STARS. They also offer cookies for sale. There were very few in the window. The older woman comes out with a sheet tray of cookies. I ask her whether the cookies on the tray are fresh — she quickly retorts — «all of our cookies are baked fresh daily.» Ummmm, not what I asked you. Then I asked her what she has on her tray — there are three different types of cookies on her tray, not even a full dozen. She spits out: «I’m not going to tell you each kind of cookie I have.» I point to one and ask her what it is. She tells me. I wonder at this point if I should profusely than her for answering me and beg to buy one. I’m sure it’s not so hard to give good customer service. I don’t get it.

Their Carrot Cake Ice Cream is 5 Star worthy! Yes, it is that GOOD! I’ve been here twice and the first time I got a scoop of carrot cake and a scoop of punkin pie in a white chocolate dipped waffle cone. Both ice creams were super yummy but carrot cake was definitely my favorite of the two. I came back the next evening before dinner and got s kiddie cone of the carrot cake. I wish we had a Murray’s in my neck of the woods. Next trip to KC will include a visit to Murray’s Ice Cream and Cookies!

I’ve been going to Murray’s for about 20 years now. It’s not just nostalgia that makes this place great, it is the consistent quality. I have never tried a bad flavor here. Standard offerings such as the chocolate flake fromage are always delicious, but every now and then a crazy fun flavor like grapefruit sorbet will be there. The cheesecake varieties are usually my favorites (blueberry cheesecake is one of the best ice cream flavors I’ve had anywhere, ever). And then there’s the carrot cake ice cream. It tastes like an extra cold piece of carrot cake (so, it is perfect).
The people working here are always very friendly, and they are patient with me when I need a couple of tastes before choosing a flavor no matter how long the line.
In the late fall, cider and cookies are the way to go. I miss Murray’s during the winter, but it makes it that much more exciting when it reopens in the spring!
Also, a sign of the times: Murray’s now accepts credit cards! Perfect for when you don’t have any cash or enough cash to tip well.

An incredible find. This is real ice cream. And EVERYTHING there is made in-​house. Tastes amazing. Employees are funny and friendly

This is our go to place for dessert, celebrations, and just plain fun! Take cash because they don’t take plastic. My peanut/​tree nut allergic son was so happy to be able to safely have Chocolate Flake Fromage. If you haven’t been here, and you only eat ice cream at national chains, stop by and support local. Parking in back is easier and walking up the stairs makes me feel a bit better about indulging.

This place is really cute and the ice cream tastes good. My only problem with it was that the flavors were very limited– not one single fruit option! Not sure I have ever been to an ice cream shop/​parlor that didn’t at least have strawberry! That said, their soda fountain creations are to die for! I had a cherry soda and it was expertly prepared and tasted soooo good. Also, the whipped cream seemed real. My mom has ways made fresh whipped cream so I know the difference. It was pretty packed on a hot Saturday and the service is friendly but super slow. Be prepared to wait! Next time, I might try the cherry limeade.

Wow! I had been here years before and forgotten that it was there. If you want to feel nostalgic and eat some very good sweets than you must go to Murray’s. All I can say is mmmm mmmm good! They aren’t open every day nor all year long so check that they are open before heading over.

Murray’s is a classic, old-​school ice cream shop. They make their waffle cones in the store (definitely opt for one of those and not a dish), and offer sundaes, a wide range of toppings, cookies, and more. Their flavors are mostly classic — you won’t find anything too out of the box here except for the chocolate flake frommage (worth trying). There are other places in town that do unique flavors much better. I usually go for a basic vanilla or coffee ice cream and have yet to be disappointed. Murray’s is inexpensive and fits the bill if you’re in Westport craving a treat on a hot summer day. The line varies depending on day and time, but never seems to be too long. There’s seating inside, but I recommend taking your cone outside to enjoy the weather on one of the benches or to take a stroll around the neighborhood.

First visit and both hubs and I went with a coffee/​chocolate pieces flavor that was delish! Nice bright and clean atmosphere. Parking is hard to find other than the few designated spots — we were lucky enough to get one. Will go back!

I’ll be honest, I visited back in March and I unfortunately can’t remember what I ordered. Whatever it was, it was seriously delicious.
However, what I didn’t forget was the kindness and friendliness of the staff in the store. It was just a day or so after their first day being open for the season, and the line was well out the door as it was an extremely warm day. Despite this, when it was finally my turn to place my order, the staff member very quickly scooped and weighed my ice cream, and didn’t seem at all bothered by other guests who wanted to sample just about everything.
Only con, they only accept cash. Not a huge issue, but I normally don’t have any on me unless I am traveling, like I was when I visited earlier this year.

Cookies and ice cream were great on their own, but together, i felt that it was too sweet. And cookies were too thick to make an ice cream sandwich. When you bite it, it squeezed out the ice cream. But anyhow, both tasted awesome!

My all time favorite place to spend money and purchase the purest happiness. The friendly staff is quick to make rapport and guide you into the most delicious ice cream of your life. Clean, cool and hip this spot is a consistent winner whether you’re getting a scoop of chocolate flake fromage (my personal recommendation) or a perfect homemade cookie or a cookie ice cream sandwich!

I’m usually a bigger frozen custard fan than ice cream but this place blew me away! I tried an ice cream sandwich with a chocolate chip cookie, english toffee cookie and skor-​umptious (something like that) ice cream. I could stay here all day trying different combinations! The cookies were awesome and tasted homemade, the ice cream was extra creamy… delicious!

We were in KC visiting when we got a hankering for some ice cream. So as usual, I searched Unilocal looking for the best place to go. This place was within walking distance of our hotel, so we trotted over there. And we were not disappointed!!! The store was busy, but we got help right away and they even offered samples if we were undecided. I got two scoops, Oreo and Choc Chip and both were out of this world! I got fudge topping on one and caramel on the other. I topped it off with pecans, whip cream and a cherry and I was in sweet heaven! My sig. other enjoyed his selection as well. We ate outside since the weather was perfect (or you can eat inside). This is a place in KC we will always come to when we have a sweet tooth!

I will start off with the positive and let you know that this place has absolutely perfect cookies! I tried the English Toffee and I was blown away!
Unfortunately, that amazing cookie was overshadowed by an absolutely terrible experience. I went with my husband and another couple. We all ordered. I sampled a couple flavors since it was my first time. I decided to go with a milkshake. And since I had never seen anything as incredible as melted Snickers, I paid extra to have some drizzled on top. Let me tell you, that melted Snickers was one of the best things I’ve ever tasted and absolutely every ice cream store should offer it as a topping. However, the milkshake itself was very disappointing. It tasted as if the ice cream to milk ratio was way off, because it tasted more like just plain milk than it did sweet and flavorful ice cream. The complete lack of flavor was disappointing enough that I felt it was worth returning/​exchanging. Now, I’ve never sent back food simply based on not being satisfied, so I definitely felt bad. But I went back in and waited in line again. When I finally got near the front and sheepishly explained my situation to the girl at the counter, she immediately waved me over to the side to speak with her. She gave me the sense that my complaint could upset or concern the customers around me. She asked if I remembered who made my milkshake — I did, and I pointed her out. So she came over to talk to me. Again, I explained that I was embarrassed to say it, but I was really unhappy with the milkshake and I wondered if I might be able to exchange it for something else — I would’ve been happy to exchange it for something of lesser value. The girl looked concerned and confused. She asked if the topping I requested ruined it by making the ice cream too melty. I insisted that I actually loved the topping — in fact, I’d love to have more of the topping! — but the milkshake was just flavorless. Another girl came by and asked if I’d tried the flavor before I requested it and I assured her I had. Again, it tasted too watered down. In the end, I was told that they couldn’t really do anything about the milkshake, but they would be happy to make me something else if I wanted to purchase. I was so dumbfounded and caught off guard by this I didn’t know what to say. Any other time I’ve been with someone at a restaurant who sent something back, the waiter would happily exchange it for something else. And sometimes even take a percentage off the bill for the inconvenience. But here I felt like I was the unreasonable one. I felt so uncomfortable that I simply left — leaving the milkshake with them — and let it go.
Later, I called the store. I’d talked the situation over with my husband and friends and they seemed to agree with me. They’d all had a pleasant experience and were shocked that my situation was handled the way it was. Bare minimum, they assumed that I would be offered a refund. So when I called I asked to speak to the manager and I explained the situation. Again, just like the first time, I was as pleasant as possible — I really wasn’t out to get them or get more than I’d paid for. And I don’t Think came off as mean and I certainly didn’t raise my voice. But this manager, in a calm and friendly tone, explained to me that that is indeed their policy. Unless they’ve made something wrong, they won’t give refunds for simply being unhappy with the product. She explained that if they operated that way, they might have many people every day taking advantage of them in this way. I voiced that I would hope that wasn’t a problem they would have every day — I would hope that their product was good enough to please most people most every day. This business philosophy seems like a terrible idea to me. Every once in awhile, you’re going to get a crazy customer with a crazy request, but even then you do want to try and please them. And although I know I’m bias, I don’t think I was being unreasonable.
Anyway, that’s my story. Decide for yourself. I actually really am torn — I’d love to say that I’ll never spend my money there again, but those cookies were so good… but I know I’ll ever buy ice cream there again. If I want out of this world, crazy amazing ice cream (and decent customer service), I’m going to Glacé!!!

Murray’s, you’re closed 5 months out of the year, you only take cash, you close at 9:30pm, and you haven’t redecorated since 1990. All of these things are terrible ideas and, yet, you are my favorite ice creamery, cookie bakery, and birthday cake shop in kc. Congratulations on making horrible business decisions and totally killing it.

Murray’s is too cute to handle, but make note that they DO NOT accept credit cards. I missed the sign and ended up scrounging through my wallet and my boyfriend’s cup holders to afford our cones.
Thankfully, the staff was very kind to us despite my error. I got a cone of their snicker doodle cookie ice cream and immediately entered taste bud Nirvana. I could drain an entire ATM for Murray’s. I will definitely be back next summer.

Seriously, check this place out! After lunch with Tim, we walked around a bit and he talked me into stopping by Murray’s. I was so stuffed from lunch I really had no desire to stop, but as we got closer to the door, the yummy smells reached out and grab me by the ear dragging me inside!
I went for a scoop of ice cream to take home for later. Tim grabbed some cookies. Tim gave me a bite of one of his cookies and it seriously was the absolute best cookie I have ever tasted. Keep in mind I wear a cookie monster hat!!!
Thinking there was no way to live up to the cookie yum, I pulled my ice cream out later and it may have been the best scoop of ice cream I have ever had. Full of bits and pieces. High quality ingredients. Just plain super yummy.
The only bad thing is that they close over the winter. I will be there to buy some goodies to stock up before they head out on vacation.

I feel really bad saying this. but… meh.
I think the bar was set too high for my first Murray’s trip. I’ve been reading review after review full of delectable treats and childhood nostalgia. I was prepared to fall in love and quit my current job to fulfilled my never before realized passion of ice cream sales at Murray’s. It didn’t happen. To cover my bases, I ordered 1 scoop of Chocolate Flake Fromage, 1 scoop of butterscotch in a dish, but with a Butterfinger waffle cone on the side. I also got one frosted sugar cookie to take home for the husband.
The Chocolate Flake Fromage was the first disappointment. This is not the frankincense and myrrh that you guys promised me. It is a fancy way of saying chocolate chip. And no, it isn’t any more exciting than that.
The butterscotch was good. This I would definitely get again. As for the waffle cone, meh. A little pricey, but a solid option. And the cookie wasn’t the soft temptress that I thought she would be. It was hard.
Now, before I sound too harsh, Murray’s was good. They served ice cold tasty tastiness and I can’t hate on that. I think the hype is just a bit much. I’d definitely come here again, but I wouldn’t seek it out over any other place in the city.
