H&R Block

Beware of H&R Block, they have deceptive business practices and will nickel and dime you any way they can. I filed online to find a «Refund Deposit Account fee» of $ 34.95 that was basically an ADDITIONAL fee they charge you to deduct your $ 24.99 filing fee from your statement. Worse yet, they make it so hard to understand what they are doing that it’s hidden in the fee structure and make it far from clear how you’re being charged. I called them on it and got 3 different reps who all said the same thing «yes we know this is deceptive, yes I answer questions all day long related to this and understand it is underhanded, no there is nothing i can do and I do understand your anger as I would be too» but ask them to elevate it to another level of support, no can do.
I was just blown away that they would actually tell me that they know this charge is not only bogus but severely deceptive. Had they made it clear that if I choose to have my filing fee deducted from my return that it would result in an additional $ 34.95 fee just for processing it I would have just paid the filing fee, but they bury it so the consumer doesn’t find it and all their employees know its a scam.
In a nutshell, I will be filing with the BBB and taking to all social media and review sites to let anyone who will listen to steer clear of these crooks! Don’t let your friends or relatives go to H&R Block and they are Deceptive, Deceptive, Deceptive as they come!

The absolute worst consumer experience I have ever been though was a result of the actions of this company. The representative I had do my taxes royally messed up my tax filing which caused the state to audit me. Not to worry though, I paid the extra fee that would cover any charges should this happen. Pretty safe, right? Wrong. I have been pushed off and ignored by one customer service representative after the other. It’s been almost 2 months and I have yet to receive an explanation or my money. Under no circumstances are you to go to this place. This company has no interest in its customers after they have sucked the money from them. The Peace of Mind insurance is a scam.

Working with H&R Block is a total nightmare when things go wrong.
I had my 2013 taxes done in Englewood, NJ. When I went in for my appointment, I was told my preparer wasn’t in work that day and to leave my paperwork. I said I’d feel more comfortable speaking to someone and they said «that’s not how it works.» I left my paperwork and had about two conversations with the preparer over the phone, during which time she kept forgetting information I had just said. I was told I would receive a large refund from NY State, NJ State and the government.
A few months later, my paperwork was rejected by NY State and it turns out that I owed $ 300. I contacted H&R Block and was given an appointment time, but was told sine it was after April, there was a chance no one would show up. Luckily, she did, she found the issue instantly, and said that Peace of Mind covered the problem.
However, a month later, H&R Block rejected my claim without reason. I spent hours trying to get ahold of someone. Finally, a claims agent called and said he was working on my case, but he was leaving on vacation for a month and wouldn’t be looking at it, nor would he hand my case off to anyone else. It was suggested I just drop my complaint.
After two months, I still hadn’t heard and couldn’t contact anyone, so I filed a claim with the BBB. Within weeks I was sent a check with no other information.
Fast forward to this year: I filed my 2014 taxes, and received a letter from the IRS. The preparer had massively screwed up the paperwork sent to the IRS last year as well, and between late fees and the amount, I now owe $ 3000.
Getting ahold of H&R Block continues to be a nightmare. I was told someone would get back to me last week and haven’t heard from anyone. I called the customer support again asking for the claims office since I have the claims agents name, and was told customer service doesn’t even know the corporate phone number. This is proving to be a massive inconvenience and financial hardship.
What’s more: my mom is an accountant, and she looked at the paperwork that was filed. Within 3 minutes she found the error. The preparer had added an extra, random amount which didn’t come from anywhere, claiming more than she should have. She just straight up didn’t know about the files she was preparing.
Do not use H&R Block. A good company is good even when things go wrong, and they have proven themselves as people who will make your life hell when you actually need them.

I have used H&R Block for 5 years and have always had a great experience! In 2014, things changed a lot in my life (got married, bought a house, started renting house on airbnb), so a lot changed with my tax situation!
My wife and I decided we were going to use H&R Block again, trying to find one of their experts that would be good with our situation. We thought we found our guy! We sat down with him, he looked over our stuff and he said, «I can definitely do this, but I really feel like you should work with Pat Dornan.» We were so impressed that during tax season, where I would think everything is so monotonous for a tax professional, that he was actually wanting to do the best for the strangers sitting at his desk.
We were able to get in with Pat to start our seemingly complicated taxes. She was such a pleasure to work with. She made sure we had EVERYTHING necessary to get the correct deductions, etc. She gave us advice on things to do for next year, planning for the future and all of it was very welcomed by us. She gave us amazing service and even when I wasn’t totally prepared she always had a smile on her face. I can’t recommend Pat enough. She has been doing this for over 20 years and it shows. She is extremely knowledgeable and we can’t wait to go back to her next year!

We Americans know that freedom isn’t free.
The online free tax filing isn’t free, either.
The federal file was $ 0; the state file was $ 15.
Still much less than in-​person consultants.

Buyer beware! My investment information was imported, and they STILL GOT IT WRONG. They doubled the amount of loss and doubled my income tax deduction. I should have known it was too good to be true. Naturally, I will have to file an amended return on my own, because Form 1040-​X can’t be sent online. This is the first year I tried them, and it will be the last. Now I’m on hold for about 10 minutes trying to reach customer service. What a waste!

I have been a user of H&R Block Software for many years. In fact I worked for the company for 7 years before software even was around So I understand TAXES. I am disappointed that Corporate would not reimburse for an error in the way the software posted an income item from my federal to state. The company claims it was «my error» … It was theirs as why would I manually want to change a number and override their «genius» software makers? Anyway I will take my business elsewhere and would suggest you do the same as H&R Block is not concerned about customer service as they espouse. All for a pitance of under $ 70.00. What a shame. I hope others read this and use the competition.

This review comes with a big caveat: the reason I was in touch with H&R Block headquarters was because of a horrible experience with one of the company’s California agents. HOWEVER, I trust the circumstances with the agent were entirely afield of business as usual at H&R Block, and upon learning of them, Client Services could not have done a better job of remedying the situation. I apologize for not being able to be more specific, but given the necessary confidentiality of financial information, there’s not a lot I can reveal.
I cannot recommend the preparatory services at this time because I’ve only had the one (bad) experience, but I am impressed with the company ethic, especially during this recession when every other corporation seems hell-​bent on squeezing every penny owed and extorted out of ordinary citizens.
