Just stumbled upon this fruit stand driving around the island the woman running it was a absolute angel. The fruit was fresh and delicious, she even showed us around her beautiful garden.

This little stand is so charming and special! There are wholesome tropical snacks available here that I haven’t seen anywhere else, and the lady working there was so warm, friendly, and contagiously cheerful, it really made my day. There were homemade coconut macaroons in 3 flavors: original, peanut butter(that’s what I got… amazing), and chocolate. A container-full was $ 5. I also got a bottle of fresh, icy cold guava juice for $ 2(there was passion fruit juice, too). There were small cups of mac nuts, strips of freshly-cut coconut, cut guava halves… This place is worth the stop!

Hard to notice this stand as you drive by. Look on the Kamehameha Highway for the big«ATM» sign out in the country, on the little(closed?) store next door. She makes macaroons, incredible macaroons, out of gloriously fresh coconut. Flavored! Chocolate, butterscotch, chunks of mango or pineapple. There is nothing like these anywhere. For ten years, we’ve been occasionally calling or writing her, sending a check, and getting a box of macaroons sent to the mainland. Just visited Hawai’i and she’s still there. And I never thought I even liked macaroons! Get some fruit, sure(I hate to ever pass up a Hawai’i farmer’s stand), but absolutely get some of Sandy’s macaroons. Even if you’re not in Hawai’i; she’ll ship ‘em.

On the very long drive round-island going north on Kam Hwy, you’ll spot many fruit stands with sandwich boards advertising fresh coconut or pineapple or papaya or mangos(if they’re in season). we stopped by this name-less, address-less stand for a quick refreshment by coconut juice from a coconut. $ 3.50 is quite the tourist price, but I don’t blame the old lady with missing teeth. Her name is Sandy and she informed us that the state board of health has made it illegal for fruit stand people to use their machetes to cut up the coconut after they have sold it for juice purposes, because a lot of places use rusty knives. i guess you’ll have to eat fresh coconut meat some other way. i support old people supporting themselves and local businesses like these are definitely part of the local flavor. see pics!
