Wyndham Kona Hawaiian Resort

It’s very nice feels like a single fam two bedroom home. Kitchen has everything ull need. The rooms are more than adequate size. The bathrooms are great sized larger than I expected. The main living area is quite large also. The nice bonus is the outdoor living space. Oh almost forgot all the units are air-​conditioned.

I agree with Jackie F’s and Beth A’s reviews; read them for good descriptions of what to expect for accommodations and grounds. The Wyndham makes for a good base for Kona activities. I booked a condo for four adults, as my boyfriend and I were sharing it with my parents (we all get along!) My parents are older and enjoyed joining the morning «walking brigades» as I called the scores of folks walking along Ali’i Drive every morning. The area with shops and cafes is about a mile away. It may seem far, but it is nice that the Wyndham is not right downtown, as traffic can get quite heavy at certain times of the day. It was very enjoyable sitting out on the lanai and watching the roosters, birds, geckos, and even the cats come around. The crowd was a bit older when we were there (mid-​January), so if you’re looking for a party scene you won’t find it here. Many were on multi-​week timeshare stays. Overall, we were very satisfied with our stay, glad to have a space where we could relax, cook, and chat. We would stay here again.
**We sat in on an Expedia talk and booked a manta ray excursion as a result; it was NOT a discount compared to what we could have gotten online ourselves, which was disappointing. It pays to do a little research yourself before booking through them! **
Some other random comments, for Wyndham as well as potential guests:
— They have a little shed where guests can borrow whatever other guests may have left behind — beach chairs, boogie boards, etc. This is a great perk and it’s worth taking a look before you buy something.
— I agree that two lounge chairs on the lanai instead of one would have been nice.
— Parking lots can get a little full, plan accordingly.
— The hale (building) numbers and actual condo numbers seemed a confusing way to arrange lodging. Maybe there was no other way to go about it.
— The tiki torches are a nice touch yet were not lit every night, not sure why.
— The doors of the large armoire in the master suite do not tuck away; they each have to remain wide open in order to access the drawers and view the TV. As a result they impede the walkway and door access to the lanai. Not a huge deal, but some armoires have doors that tuck away and that would’ve been nice here, if more than one person is moving around the room.
— They have blackout curtains on the bedroom windows, yet the master suite’s door to the lanai does not, which doesn’t make sense.
— Having a bar onsite would be a nice touch for sure!

We briefly purchased a timeshare with Wyndham Kona, Hi. Everyone we met was friendly and respectful. Joshua, Riley and Bruce (the senior manager of the property) were all helpful and very respectful when we decided that we had changed our minds about our purchase. Other than asking why and seeing if there was anything they could do to address our concerns they respected our decision and quickly processed the paperwork to finalize our decision to cancel. We were concerned that it would be a long and painful process to cancel but they made it quick and painless. We very much appreciated that. It is a beautiful property that we would enjoy staying at in the future but for personal reasons we chose not to buy timeshare. We thank the Wyndham people for their time and professional manner in which all aspects were handled.

For timeshare living the place has all that it should. Clean and well maintained.
Downside is the garbage cans are a decent hike away so if you have any physical limitations it is nearly impossible to take out the trash.

This was our home away from home on the Big Island.
It’s not the biggest resort ever, which is good. The condos are two bedroom, two bath homes, full kitchen and a private lanai. Two pools on the property. An abundance of wild life, including a clowder of cats near the upper pool.
The condos were, not surprisingly, very spacious. It’s a not an all inclusive, so you’re responsible for your own meals. The full kitchen means you can save a few dimes and cook meals yourself. I like that, although, being out in the Hawaiian sun and humidity meant I wasn’t always so keen on cooking after a long day. The kitchen is stocked, including a rice cooker because you are in Hawaii.
The beds are large and comfy. The claw foot tub in the suite is awesome. Not large enough for two average sized humans comfortably, but hey, I’m not average sized and I’m on honeymoon. The shower IS big enough for two.
Master suite has access to lanai, which is nice. Lanai had a large dining table, one lounge chair, and a small sitting area. Wish they got rid of that and had two lounge chairs.
Pools are amazing. The upper one with all the cats has a kiddie pool, a pool, and a hot tub. There were a LOT of millipedes here, especially in the restroom. Speaking of restroom, basic knowledge of man/​woman on Hawaiian is useful. Luckily, I know, but kane-​man/​wahine-​woman. It’s pretty easy to figure out regardless. The lower pool had a sand bottom hot tub. Pretty cool.
The lobby is open air, and they have Kona coffee and water for the guests. They offer a breakfast thing, where you sit and listen to some of the excursions they offer (Expedia during our visit). You get a chance for free things, and discounts on excursions. I was lucky enough to get a discount on a lava tour. Breakfast was continental, but free food is free food!
Parking can be a pain in the ass. There were times when the wasn’t any parking near our hale due to renovations. Hopefully that don’t be an issue for you.
Overall, I’m very pleased with my stay, and o would stay again if it was an option.

The resort is beautiful in general. I would stay here again! The grounds were lush, green, and immaculate. I loved the common areas with gas grills and picnic tables. The rooms were spacious and updated. The kitchen was well-​stocked with dishes & cookware. The fridge is full-​size with an icemaker in the freezer. It had a dishwasher & garbage disposal as well. I loved having the washer and dryer in the room. It was a lifesaver. The resort does provide you with dishwasher detergent & laundry soap. If you need more, just ask. They’ll provide it free of charge. The room also had a safe, flat screen TV’s, plenty of towels for the beach/​pool, and a small cooler to take with you to the beach! The living room had plenty of seating and also had a pullout sofa bed. Basic toiletries are provided such as shampoo/​conditioner, soap, mouthwash. The patio of the room was in great shape as it and the furniture appeared to have been recently varnished. We visited the pools several times and they are really nice. The hot tub was also really nice and had a beach entry with a sandy bottom. This resort is in an excellent location and is within walking distance to the main strip of Kona. The staff was also very friendly at check in and out. We didn’t need to talk to them very often however. This resort suited my family and the ones that stayed with us. Free wi-​fi is offered for up to 4 devices and it worked good.
The only downside to the resort was that we didn’t have daily housekeeping (you could request it at a cost however), and there are no on-​site restaurants or room service for food. The upside to that is it kept our costs down at the resort itself. There were plenty of grocery stores within a short distance that we were able to go shopping at for our weekly food needs. Plus not to mention the plethora of restaurants close to the resort (within walking distance) to get food from. Since we did have to do our own housekeeping, the resort did provide us a vacuum when we asked for it. Overall, the room was very clean. We did let the resort know that the top of our armoire needed to be dusted. The legs to the bathtub also showed some rust and calcium deposits but I think that’s expected considering the climate is very wet. The carpeting was ok, not the best but again, the condition was in decent shape considering the wet climate and who knows how many families have been walking on it with wet beach gear and clothing. If I were the resort, I’d tile more of the main walkways in the room.
All the positives outweighed any areas for improvement that I mentioned above, and if I had the opportunity to sell my Mexico timeshare at a 5 star resort and get one here at the Kona Hawiian, I would. I highly recommend this resort!

3.5 STARS, maybe 3.75 STARS!!!
Let me explain! This place can be really nice and really comfortable for anyone wanting to stay away from the normal «4» or «5» STAR hotel. Plus, it’s located off of Alii Drive, close to downtown Kailua-​Kona. It actually is within walking distance of shops, eateries, etc., but Alii Drive has really changed for the bad! Not their fault, though, so on to the review!
First off, checking in was pretty fast, but the front desk guy at night had «Zero» personality. Couldn’t or wouldn’t crack a smile and seemed very automated. Maybe I caught him on an off night, and I completely understand how he could be so used to dealing with the same questions or comments over and over, but at least smile and nod, like I used to do when I worked Customer Service! I wasn’t asking questions, as I used to live nearby, and I wasn’t making stupid comments, but simple things like where to park, etc., should be met with some kind of unrehearsed response, instead of trying to pawn me off to the guy across the way! Couldn’t even get my parking pass from him, since the other guy seemed to be the one that issues them. Kind of a weird set up, since the other guy was selling activities to the guests and didn’t seem to be connected, but I guess he’s in charge of the timeshares? The daytime crew was very inviting and helpful, however.
Anyway, got the keys and after following the instructions given to me by the front desk guy, we got lost! We were able to make it to the right parking area, which is very limited, by the way, but the buildings aren’t numbered as explained or you would think they should be. If you’re staying in a certain number building, the map says your building is «here» when in fact, it is actually «way over there!» There are actually posts with different building numbers in front of the buildings, and they all seem to be positioned in front of the wrong buildings, or not as shown on the map. Plus, the walkways can be located around some design brush, which makes it appear more hidden than necessary. Especially if you’re looking for your Condo for the first time at night.
So once we were able to locate our building, which was about 3 buildings away from how it was explained and highlighted on our map, we entered into the Condo and were pleasantly surprised. The place was as big as an apartment, with a full sized kitchen, very large patio and large master bedroom/​bath. The guest room was kind of small, but large enough to accommodate people comfortably for a couple of nights. Plus a shared bathroom off the hallway and the guest bedroom.
The master bedroom had an open concept, with a separate toilet room, but the jacuzzi tub, shower and sink are opened to the bedroom area, so if you’re shy, you won’t want to bathe while the room is occupied. There is a door that leads out onto the patio area as well, which makes it convenient if you like to relax out there. There’s also a large flat screen television in this room, so very nice. The bed is also extremely comfortable. The room is also air-​conditioned, so easy to relax in.
As for the kitchen, fully stocked with everything you need. From pots and pans to silverware, to knives. Dishwasher, microwave, ice-​maker, etc.,! They got it! Only downfall were the little ants that devoured our pizza when we left it on the counter for a couple of hours. Damn bastards!
Overall, a great place to stay. Only downfalls were the robotic guy at the front desk at night, the limited parking in the area of the buildings and the numbering of the buildings. I can handle the ants! Plus, the rates aren’t half bad, compared to the other places nearby, especially when you consider the other places normally don’t have a full sized kitchen and separate bedrooms.
I would stay there again, definitely.

I wish I could have given them 5 stars because this place is really nice, the staff and concierge are very helpfull. What sucks about this place is the Internet provider, after 3 days of jumping thru every hoop and being told you need to register and provide your Email address and even being on the phone with their tech support for an hour, still no Internet even though it says were connected. I stay in alot of hotels and resorts and just need to enter the password and your connected. Come on Wyndham, get a provider thats user friendly and without all the hurdles, just to get friggin Wifi.
Maybe when we come back next year they’ll have a clue what it takes to get wifi like every other Hotel and Resort out there.

My family and I stayed here in July. We had a wonderful experience. The first night we arrived late, and the air conditioner was not working in the unit. We were given the option to move rooms but were too tired to do so, and moved the next day. Staff was helpful and offered to move us rooms. The condo was very nice and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The kitchen had dining ware, pots, pans and everything needed for the BBQ and dinners we prepared. Most nights we ate out on the lanai, the ceiling fan helped keep us cool. We also had a washer and dryer which was great to wash sandy beach clothes. The amenities included free use of propane BBQ grills, 2 pools/​spa and a fitness room. The only thing I would change next time is to request a room upstairs, as we had noisy neighbors with different sleep/​wake schedule than ours. We did attend the time share meeting, which was informative and staff was courteous and gave a gift for attending. Expedia staff were on site to help us book our Lau, which was fun. I would definitely recommend staying here!

I came on RCI exchange. My unit was ok. Seems like they do not give good location of unit with view for RCI exchange. Staff was very friendly. Good location of resort as it is close to town. Pools was small. I give grade of C+ to B for resort. 4 star might be too high.

We rented a two bedroom two bath condo. All necessities were readily available both in and out of the condo. Rooms are spacious, patios are fully equipped with a full size dining table as well as a comfortable reclining lawn chair. Kitchen is well furnished with all the necessities you’d need! There are community bbq areas outdoors. There are two pools to enjoy and lots of free parking. The only thing this property lacks in my opinion is a bar at the pool! Awesome property, would highly recommend!

I really liked the rooms here. you have 2 bedrooms 2 baths with a huge living room and kitchen area.
there are dinning tables on the balcony where we ate every meal there.
It was really nice to be in our own little building unlike many other time shares that feel more like an apartment complex. Here we only had people below us and no one to the sides.
The grounds where beautiful and close enough to down town to walk to. The upper pool was beautiful the lower pool was often empty. The lower pool had a bar but I never saw it open, would have spent more time there if it had.
I did find the 4 device rule for the wifi a little strange. When the rooms can hold up to 6 people, and we had 5, 4 devices on wifi is just not enough.
We did have some issues with the keys, maybe its something to do with the humidity and the lock systems because I have seen a few complaints on here.
Over all a location I would consider coming back to.

Our day started off a little rough when we wanted to check in early and the Wyndham was unable to accommodate us. *This is the first property we’ve been to on the island where we’ve had to wait till three o’clock to check into our room. When I first called to request an early check in, the staff offered to let us use the pool until our room was ready. We got some towels from the front desk and drove to the bigger of the two pools which was located at the very top of the property. Compared to the huge selection of resorts, hotels and condos around the island, the pools here are very small. It didn’t seem to matter much to the kids though. They made the most of it and were happy to be in the water. On the upside, I was a little amazed that the patrons here were all very personable and friendly. Most of the families that we met sparked up conversation with us in the hot tub. We met about 5 different families all of whom owned time share at this location. They seemed pleased to have some local company lingering around to chat with. I put in several calls throughout the day to the front desk to check on the status of our room. Each time, the staff was very professional and apologetic and said they would call me as soon as our room was ready. It was a blazing hot day. I didn’t have anything for the kids to eat or drink and there was absolutely nothing on the property to purchase for them. **There are no shops or restaurants at this Wyndham.** My kids were getting anxious and I was starting to get a little irritated with the wait. We packed up and left the property and drove into Kailua town to get them some lunch. We literally didn’t get a call till 3pm. Once we checked in, we were fine. We stopped to get drinks and supplies on our way back to the property so everything went smoothly from that point on. I was pleased with how clean and spacious the rooms were but we should have requested two double beds for the kid’s room. They did have a pull out couch so my «almost» teens didn’t mind sharing space with my six year old. There was more than enough sleeping space for everyone. The kids made use of the large lanai and enjoyed the local music coming from the speaker disguised as rocks, next to the building. On our second pool day, we ordered Dominos Pizza and had the driver deliver our food and drinks right to the pool, genius! lol
With all that being said, I would definitely stay here again but it does require some planning. The plus to this property is the convenience of being right on Alii Dr., near ocean activities.
This property is also about 10 mins away from great shopping and dinning.
Nearby shopping complexes: Kona Inn Shopping Village, Kona Commons, Coconut Grove, Kona Coast Shopping Center, Lanihau Shopping Center & Keauhou Shopping Center.
Costco is about 15 mins north of this location.
Nearby Snorkeling: Kahaluu Beach Park (Don’t leave your valuables in your car or in your bags unattended along the beach.)
You can charter boats & snorkel tours at both Keauhou Pier and Kailua Pier.

Great place to stay and convenient. Quick walk or drive to downtown Kona. We have stayed here multiple times and have always had a great experience. Big kitchen, large living room, and huge lānai great for yoga, morning coffee or dinner. Bedrooms are spacious and large bathrooms as well. I knocked down to 4 stars because we did have a few geckos in the condo the second stay here but there were geckos all over Kona then (not just our resort) and most of Hawaiian resorts are in lush rainforest areas so it’s expected to see some bugs/​insects/​geckos etc. Service here is great but they will try very hard to get you to attend the timeshare meeting (you get coupons for your stay so it may be worth it for you). Overall, great experience.

Great place to stay. Nice pools and hot tubs. Beatiful grounds and well taken care of. You know you are in Hawaii. Everything we needed was there and all was nice. The carpets could be cleaner or maybe replaced was the only complaint. Very friendly

Cockroach on my breakfast plate this morning and now centipedes. Haven’t they heard of pest control? NOT worth $ 200 per night. What kind of establishment is Wyndham running here??? Disappointing!!.

Stayed here as part of a hotel & flight package and it was spot on. The staff here are welcoming and helpful, not to mention that they have an activities guide on site to provide recommendations and book reservations for a variety of things.
The price was very reasonable as part of the package and my friend and I had a seriously expansive place all to ourselves. The place had 2BR with king size beds with the master having a standalone bathtub and shower stall to go along.
The living room was huge and there’s a full kitchen for anyone who wants to do some cooking. Parking was a piece of cake and there were plenty of spaces throughout the complex. For exercise, a small fitness room near the front entrance sufficed for some basic cardio.
One of the best features though was the location. The resort’s just a mile or so south of downtown Kona, 15 – 20 minutes from Kona International and right along the water. I had a chance to take a stroll up to downtown for some coffee & breakfast and it was a sweet area to take in the sun and enjoy the gorgeous view.

Checked in yesterday. 3.5 stars.

One other thing to look out for — seems like there are cats all over the property. I’ve seen 3 on my lanai so far. Don’t get me wrong — I love cats. But, these are not normal domestic cats. These are rough-​looking cats who look like they’ve been through the wringer and don’t look safe enough to pet. Kind of depressing. :(
Overall, decent experience. The roach just kind of ruined it for me, though. Maybe they’re common in HI? I don’t know. This is my 3^rd time in HI and never experienced this at a hotel.

Park– like grounds. 5 stars.
Big, clean units, but in need of new carpets. 4 stars.
2 small pools, and NO tennis courts, NO basketball court, or playroom. 1 star.
Location, close to town, but too far to walk. No ocean view. 2 stars.
A 3 star resort.
