Most visitors will miss this beach park as it’s in an obscure location, however, it’s a really great beach park for picnics and BBQ’s. There are covered pavillions, plenty of trees for shade and the best part is all the lava pools which make it perfect for your keiki(children). The funny thing about this place is you will literally drive down a runway as this is the old airport. There’s tons of parking and lots of beach and coast line. You have to look around to find the lava pools or just look where all the children are playing in the water. You could literally spend an entire day here just checking out all the cool lava pools. The surf gets really high on this side in the winter, however, because of all the lava beds, it keeps all the lava pools safe for the children. Across the parking lot on the Mauka(mountain) side, is a really neat jogging/walking path that was recently created. It’s a really nice area to go for a stroll and check out all the artsy fartsy stuff that has been created and donated there. If you end up at this beach park, be sure to check this area out as well.

This isn’t a packed beach, like the ones on Ali’i or farther north on the west side. It’s chill and has historical value. Perfect beach spot to take your Ohana on a Sunday, barbecue some grindz and drink lotsa Kona beers. If you have a flat-bed truck, even better, brah. Mahalo.

I’m not exactly sure what I thought I was going to find here. From the moment I saw the words old Kona airport I was fascinated. What I found was a Canada party filled with older Canadian people! One of them had on the winter hat and a hockey jersey. They were listening to traditional Hawaiian music and partaking in lawn bowling. They had a Canadian flag hanging from the roof of their covered area. I would say probably 30% of them were wearing red. I find it amusing that they needed the flag hanging to identify the party, all of them were wearing red. They were not hard to spot. As a recreation area it’s quite nice. There a lot of picnic tables and a small trees providing lots of shade. The beach seems mild and well mannered with smaller waves breaking on the rocks. The bathroom was nice and clean. Its a landing strip and old airport so has a ton of open space. There’s also a little skate park near the opening when you drive in. It’s a great use of space for the people. Canada party is optional?

The idea of a an abandoned airport runway is extremely interesting to me. Throw a beach in to that equation and you can count on me to at least check it out. That was the case for this beach park, I was so interested in what it may be like that I had to stop in. The park was very easy to find, just one turn off of the main road(Rt 11). The sheer length of the runway was a little overwhelming, but it was nice to know that this length was also the length of beach to access. After driving for what seemed like forever down the runway, I spotted two beach entrances. One had a bathroom, shower, and some pavilions with tables for enjoying the sun. The other entrance just had pavilions and tables. As for the beach, it was wide and hot. There wasn’t much cover from trees and the water was littered with volcanic rocks. This made it not very conducive for swimming. It seems more like a picnicking beach than a swimming beach. I have been to much more enjoyable beaches and would only go to this beach for the novelty of the old runway.
