The Julian Gold Rush Hotel

My daughter and I just spent the night in a second floor room. We chose this hotel as the spot for a mommy/​daughter night out because she just completed learning about the Gold Rush in 4^th grade and it seemed a fitting theme to tie it all together. The front office staff was warm, friendly, and very knowledgeable about the history of the hotel. The rooms were very authentic feeling and it was so nice to be unplugged for an evening (no TV or phones in the room). They do have Wifi access for those who need it. :)
We had a wonderful time playing games in the parlor and then enjoying the 5:00 tea time. The bed was very comfortable (with lots of pillows). We also enjoyed the complimentary waffle breakfast in the morning! Everything about this place is wonderful!
My daughter did not want to leave and we both are looking forward to visiting this charming hotel again!

This was our third time staying here and it just keeps getting better each time. It’s cozy and quiet, clean and comfortable. And the homemade granola is enough to make the drive alone! We’ll always keep coming back!

My wife and I have stayed at this hotel 3 times now. It just keeps getting better. We prefer Sunday’s not just for the price but because Julian becomes so quiet and peaceful. The Gold Rush Hotel is right in the middle of Julian but seems a world away once inside. Rooms are well decorated and kept clean. Afternoon tea is fantastic and we can’t say enough about the breakfast; especially the granola. Make sure you buy some before leaving.

We have visited the Julian Hotel 6 times and we just love it. When you walk in the door you feel like you stepped into the past. The charming antique décor transports you to a slower and quieter time.
The cozy rooms upstairs are filled with antiques and quilts; and you get to choose which room to stay in.
The Afternoon Tea in the parlor has pastries coffee, tea, hot apple cider on cold days, and lemonade on warm days. Each table has games, books or puzzles that entice you to leisurely sit and enjoy your tea.
The breakfasts are delicious, always starting with homemade granola. The Eggs Florentine is my favorite.
The hospitality and friendly staff make this this charming historic hotel a place you will want to visit again.

This hotel is just so absolutely beautiful and charming. Although there are no phones and no television (which personally I don’t mind), it is a very relaxing environment. Each room is unique (we stayed in the Ulysses S. Grant Suite), tiny but cozy and charming. Our room had a bathroom (sink in one room, toilet and shower in the other) a nice big bed beautiful antique furniture. They serve breakfast in the common room downstairs and just the history of this hotel is awesome. I would absolutely come back and stay here.

I’ve stayed here twice, with eight years between visits. It remains a great B&B! It is ideal for a quiet getaway. The customer service is excellent. The environment is rustic and quaint. Rooms are small, but they make up for it with their charm.

This Historical Lanark is a jewel. We have stayed 5 times. We just love the hospitality and the antique décor. There aren’t any tv’s, so it it is very romantic and peaceful. The perfect place to recharge. If you arrive early you get to choose your room from all of those available. Each one is unique.
My husband doesn’t like «birdfood» for breakfast. Their 2 course breakfast always satisfies him. I love the afternoon tea with cookies, scones and other treats.

My daughter and I fell in love with this place from the moment we walked in! ! It feels like you have gone back in time to the early 1900’s. Do you want a place to relax??? Julian Hotel is the place!
Upon check-​in, we had the choice of 3 different rooms that were still available. I loved that we were able to walk up, look at the available rooms, and choose the one we wanted! We chose The Bailey Suite (4). Lovely! You get the view of part of Main Street from here.
We arrived just in time for Tea Time! What a delight! Their Sweet and Spicy tea is one to try! In addition to the homemade marmalade & onion butter! We also took time to play Scrabble and Candyland after enjoying our tea. So nice that the hotel offers lots of games and books to read.
Oh! And the following morning… a full breakfast! ! We had homemade granola followed by waffles topped with cinnamon apples… yum! !
After breakfast, we checked out the Julian Hotel History book at the front desk. What a feeling to have and imagine what it must have been like in this same place in 1897 (when the hotel was founded)…
Two-​thumbs up for the Julian Hotel! ! We will definitely return!

One of the cutest, most coziest hotels I have ever stayed at!
**If you try to stay a night on Saturday, you will have to stay for 2 nights.
Check in starts at 3p but my boyfriend & I checked in at 2p & there were rooms available. Lisa was very friendly & allowed us to choose between Room 3, 4, & 6. We chose 6 because it had a roomier bathroom. The room itself is small, just big enough for 2 people but it makes it that more intimate. Our bed had literally 10 pillows (lol) & a quilted blanket on the bottom & the top. The rooms have AC/​Heater. In addition, the hotel has wifi but no televisions, which I loved because it made my boyfriend & I spend quality time with one another.
Afternoon Tea is served from 5p-​6p in the Parlor. Coffee & tea are served along with pastries. They have board games available. There is a sign that says «No Cellular Phones», again I loved this!
Breakfast is served from 8a-​9a. Coffee & tea are available.
First Course = Granola, milk, & orange juice
Second Course = Eggs Florentine, yogurt with blueberries, watermelon, grapes, apples.
I was expecting one of those typical continental breakfasts with cereal but I am so glad I was wrong! The food was delicious & many of the items are homemade! In addition, it was filling!
Check out is at 11am. Street parking available.
All of the staff was wonderful & sweet! I highly recommend this hotel to anyone who stays the night in Julian! It is so homey & since it is the holidays, beautiful decorated!

After having lunch at Julian Grille, I met up with my Pasadena City College tour group and we got to see the private interiors of the Julian Gold Rush Hotel.
This place is a quaint bed and breakfast inn, and they don’t allow tourist to come in a take pictures unless you’re a guest staying there. Though, our tour guide, Jaz, hooked it up and we got to see the historical hotel lobby, parlor and kitchen area.
Originally, owned and started by free slaves Albert and Margaret — they opened up this delightful bnb, and Margaret was known for her cooking and gracious southern hospitality hosting. After they had passed, the hotel was sold and is now owned by Lisa, who is the hotel’s 4^th generation Inn keeper.
It was gorgeous how they kept the preservation and history throughout the years. Really pretty and room availability starts at $ 95 a night.

Take a step back in time and relax in this beautiful Victorian hotel. The staff is very nice and the hotel is clean. The rooms are small but cozy. They let you choose the room you want. My husband and I stayed in room 3. This room has two windows with view to the front of the hotel and the side. In the afternoon they serve tea and pastries. In the morning they serve you hot breakfast, which was delicious and a lot. I’m very happy my husband and I stayed here. We would definitely come back.
I do have to add though that when we went in to room 1, I got goosebumps all over the body. So I told the lady at the reception desk and she said it was probably the wall paper that made me feel uneasy. So, if you are into the paranormal stuff, this hotel is definitely one that you should look into.

On the spur of the moment I decided on a short getaway, just for a change of scene. I live in fast-​paced San Diego County. I visited Julian twice before, 10 years apart on day trips. Hardly had a memory of it. I booked reservations at the JULIAN GOLD RUSH HOTEL the first time last Sunday. The idea of a quaint, historical charmer appealed to me. I was not disappointed. From the moment I entered the lobby I was met with all the accoutrements of its heyday. Every room and private bath is different, comfortable, and possesses everything you want for ease of use. Inside your room has all the quiet of an empty house. Outside is a garden with two levels, and comfortable tables and chairs. More chairs line the front porch if you just want to hang out.
All this would be plenty to have a wonderful time. But it doesn’t stop there. Breakfast is served from 8 to 9 AM. A 2-​course meal, coffee, tea, juice, fresh fruit, and hot main course. Teatime is 5 pm with more fresh goodies. Different offerings each day. Delicious, and presented on formal dining tables in a beautiful parlor.
You can get to all the various restaurants on foot. One or two you would drive a couple miles. Shopping is delightful with the variety of décor, clothing, shoes and much more. Everything is unique and well priced.
Don’t forget to relax outside after dark and be awed by the stars.
I liken the town of Julian and this special hotel, to the fictional town of Mitford, for anyone familiar with the popular book series by Jan Karon.
This hotel will now be a regular getaway stop for me. The three days I have been here, make me want to stay three more weeks. I give it all the beautiful stars you can see in its skies.

I stayed here for a couple of nights and absolutely loved it. It takes about an hour to reach Julian from the 15 freeway and it’s a scenic drive through winding country roads. Julian is a small town that consists of some restaurants, shops and BnBs along Main Street. There are outdoorsy things to do like hiking and exploring places with dirt, animals and plants. There are people who enjoy that kind of thing but I’m not exactly one of them.
The Julian Gold Rush Hotel is quaint af. There is wallpaper in every room and lots of heavy wooden furniture. There are wood stoves in the parlor and oh yeah, there’s a PARLOR! Breakfast is served there in the morning during the wee hours of 8 to 9 am and tea time from 5 to 6 pm. The parlor is open until 9 pm and is equipped with board games and old timey literature. This is actually really nice considering how small some of the rooms are and there are no televisions. I read through some of the guestbooks and many visitors said they reconnected with their spouses or friends. Imagine that. Put down your smart phone and you’ll actually have to talk to the people around you. I know I’m being sarcastic but it’s actually a refreshing change of pace.
I enjoyed my experience at the Gold Rush Hotel. I wish I had a chance to pick my room. We stayed in #11 and it is a bit small but the bathroom is airy, bright and big. We also discovered a couple of things about the room but I won’t ruin it for future visitors. The staff and the other guests were friendly. The breakfast was delicious. Coffee, tea, orange juice, homemade granola, eggs florentine, fresh fruit and fresh bread. The tea time was okay. I’m hoping we get to taste the fresh scones and hot apple cider everyone on Unilocal was raving about!
I would definitely recommend staying here!

Love this place! Tea time is amazing. Breakfast is amazing. The town is amazing.
Its a great location for any adventure. We stayed over night and this was not long enough! There is hiking everywhere. Food here is awesome. Oh and the pie! Pieeee :)

This hotel is nice. It’s a bed and breakfast in the truest sense in that you can choose from one of maybe a dozen bedrooms in the main house, and it’s simply a full/​queen sized bed and a bathroom, no frills. However, you’re provided 5pm tea time with light snacks and a breakfast in the morning too, all inclusive of the room fee, which is generally from what I hear about or under $ 150/​night.
Interestingly, there’s no TV’s in the room, but that’s kind of a nice throwback era to the days where people communicate and actually talk rather than stare into the boob tube for entertainment.
There’s a game room with puzzles and board type games including Jenga downstairs, but I think the hours are limited, so not 24 hrs for access.
The staff are helpful and friendly. They have resources including menus and points of interest binders to tell you what your options in town are.
If you visit, take a look at the history of the place and origins, including some insightful write ups and photographs.

Been here twice winter and spring. On Main Street within walking distance of everything. Check in is at 3 but they had rooms available and let us in several hours early. Nice porch you can hang out and people watch from. Tea time 5 – 6, breakfast at 8. Didn’t participate in either this time as we were out and about and we get up way too early to mention. In the past I recall that the breakfast was really good.
Typical B&B fare, quaint, clean, cottage-​like rooms with a tiny intimate bathroom. Dining room and main check– in have that historic soul. We thought they were comfortable beds. Now that we have a pet, we’ll be looking for pet friendly accommodations.
Check to see if there is still a Living Social deal that comes with a free pie voucher before you book.

Pros:
— Location right in the middle of historic Julian
–Quaint, private cottage (we stayed in the patio cottage)
–Daily afternoon tea with coffee, tea, breads and cookies.
Cons:
–The breakfast that never was. Waited nearly an hour for a table before leaving without eating our already paid for breakfast as the breakfast lounge was full. Asked if we could take breakfast to our private patio and eat there due to lack of available tables and the inn keeper refused. When we left she asked what was wrong, we advised we had reservation for an activity and couldn’t wait any longer and she didn’t attempt to remedy the situation. Very disappointing! It’s like sailing on the Titanic without enough lifeboats to accommodate all of your passengers. If you have a B&B and know your occupancy, you should have enough seats to accommodate all of your guests for their prepaid breakfast!
–Uncomfortable beds, like back ache uncomfortable level.
–Tiny bathroom and shower.
–Generic toiletries aka a cheap bar of dial soap and a single serve packet of breck shampoo… Bring your own toiletries!
We won’t be back, but it was worth a shot.

I visited 12÷30÷14, when I entered to try to check in they allowed me 2 hours early. (How awesome) I got to choose which room was available. (How awesome again) I chose room number 9 it was very cozy and I had a view of the back courtyard (it was snowing, it looked extremely beautiful) lisa, was very helpful and super friendly. I will be coming back
The décor was cute, they have tea time! And free breakfast I did not get to these options. They have a fireplace! Cards, puzzles, and free coffee at 6:30.
