JP Knit And Stitch

This wonderful shop has beautiful yarns, fabrics, and notions — but best of all, the staff cannot be beat. They are warm, friendly, helpful, and totally welcoming. The classes are great as well. It is a pleasure to sit in the comfy «living room» and stitch away. Totally addictive! We are so lucky that Genevieve and her shop have come to Jamaica Plain.

I’ve been in multiple times for help with multiple projects, and every time the staff has given me more help than I could hope for (and saved me from disaster more than once) – and with a cheerful smile!
If you’re looking for the big-​box craft store experience – with fluorescent lights and dirt-​cheap yarn in every color of the rainbow – you won’t find it here, and that’s a GOOD thing. The world has enough A.C. Moore’s and JoAnn Fabrics – what it needs is more places like this one: a hometown business with a carefully-​curated inventory, lots of heart, and lots of know-​how. A community gathering place. A hub of inspiration and local pride.
I’m honored to have it in my neighborhood.

I’m a new knitter and went in to look at the yarn recently. No one offered to help me and I felt kind of unwelcome in the store. They didn’t have a great selection of yarn and the prices were high. I won’t be returning here to buy my yarn and knitting supplies. There are other comparable local knitting shops that are much more comprehensive and the staff is nicer and more welcoming!

I took a class and returned on my own to use their sewing machines. I made a nice tote and clutch and am looking into other classes as well. It was nice to go on my own and use their sewing machines, even just to hem some pants! Thank you!

I have always loved this store — they have a great selection of yarn and nice fabric. However a recent class experience has left me really disappointed. I signed up for a sewing class and was told before paying for it that I would be able to fully complete the project within the class hours. However after the first class it was clear that was going to be impossible and that we would need to sew between classes to get the project done. I don’t have a machine at home and was told I would have to pay $ 10/​hour to use the machines in the store. That’s on top of the $ 100 I had already spent on the class plus the $ 100+ I spent on materials. Then even when I did try to come in to use the machines when I was told I could, I came to find other another «makeup» class here using the machines. There is no chance I’m going to get this project done in this class and now I’m sure I’ll have an unfinished project just sitting at home. What a waste of time and money. The products are still good but I won’t be signing up for classes here ever again. Eliot School is far more organized and reliable and they don’t nickel and dime you for the basics you need to get the class project completed.

As a knitter, this small shop, relatively close to home, is not ideal. If you are into sewing, quilting, otherwise using fabric for crafts, this may be better for your needs. However, the yarn selection is very limited. I recently stopped in looking for some blue and yellow yarn for a generic project — all I needed was blue and yellow yarn of nearly any weight or material. They didn’t have anything that remotely met my needs, and it took me all of 3 minutes to peruse the entire yarn selection and make this determination.
The shop is cute and centrally located in a nice portion of Center Street in JP, but the stock is just far too limited to be of use to me.

I started crocheting right about the time this place opened — perfect! Unfortunately they did not initially have many crochet books/​supplies. They have definitely expanded in that sense, but it is still more centered on knitting (which…I suppose it is called KNIT and stitch… but still, crocheters need love, too!).
The fabrics they carry are super fun! Love the patterns. A little pricey, but I never regret my purchases because they’re SO DANG CUTE! The staff is always helpful, but sometimes can be busy with other customers — speak up and they’ll be sure to come right over.
I’ve been meaning to take a beginners knitting course for a while but haven’t found a time that works great with my schedule. Yet. Overall, great little shop in a great spot!

I’ve been getting back into knitting this year and went here last night to get ideas for some baby booties I’m making. They had the perfect colors of yarn and a nice selection (I had been searching the knitting local stores for some time). My favorite part — it’s clean, open, and modern. The employees were super helpful and I know I’ll be back to this hip knitting store often.

I guess I was hoping for more from JP Knit and Stitch.
Don’t get me wrong, the place is cozy and lovely but the selection was not as extensive as I expected.
I was starting a new project and they didn’t carry the yarn I wanted to use — ok no biggie — so I asked an employee to help me find a comparable yarn. She gave me a few suggestions and went to help someone else. In the end, I didn’t find what I was looking for and no one else there seemed available to help me.

I love this place – I learned to knit here with a class, everyone is super sweet, the selection is well-​curated, and they have been SO encouraging to this not-​very-​crafty girl. I don’t always buy all of my yarns here, but that’s only because the amount of space doesn’t allow them to have everything I might want, especially with regard to buttons, notions, etc.
But they let me wind my yarn, even if I bought it elsewhere! (Key, if you’re a knitter.)
Also, the window seat is 100% my favorite spot in JP to hang out. And they have coffee for knitters. Come take a class, you won’t regret it.

I went in to the store hoping to buy a pair of pinking shears but couldn’t find them. Went to the counter to ask the assistant, spent over ten minutes standing there while the assistant had a conversation with another woman about gardening. Finally, I interrupted briefly to ask if they had pinking shears and the response was «I don’t think so», after which she went back to talking about dirt. This is a very small store with lovely fabrics and yarns (hence the two stars), and if they’re trying to be commercially successful it would help to at least pretend to be interested in customer service. JoAnn Fabric has a much better selection, and the sales folks are helpful.

I have been here several times and was always welcomed and acknowledged. It is too bad when someone feels that they have not been greeted properly, but as someone who works in retail, it is so easy to have an off momemt.
It is a bright and lively shop. It is so good that the knitters of JP have a place to go and get their craft on !

Jeez, folks, this is a small group of women, trying to bring a concept together that has never been done in this part of JP! Maybe offer a bit of generosity and community here?! I honestly can’t believe you’d feel slighted here if you walked in with a smile — they’re all ridiculously friendly and nice, and no, I have no affiliation with them, just a happy local customer.
Did you try to say hello? Introduce yourself, with a smile and a «welcome to the neighborhood, I really hope you do well, how can I get plugged into this community too?» Sometimes people come into shops with such dour attitudes that you really *don’t* want to bother them.
It’s not a massive fabric store, nor a yarn-​only store. It’s a community shop with some well-​curated selections. It’s not a one-​stop shop.
I love this place and what it’s trying to create here in JP. It has a range of cute quilting fabrics, and it’s always nice to see these specialty prints in real life before buying — one of the downsides of «cheap» online shopping. They have recently built out their selection of patterns and books.
The classes are excellent — a nice size, a good pace, and it’s nice to use the machines at the store so we don’t have to lug ours back and forth each time. It’s really busy on the weekends, with a nice atmosphere, and a great place to meet some other people. They just opened a few months ago, so they are still building out their class offerings. As they get more popular, they will continue to offer new classes. If you go into the store, you can see some examples of the things people have made in classes. I’ve taken a few different courses and they’ve all been very helpful and supportive.
I do wish they’d set up a «customer loyalty» card of some kind. For every 10 yards of fabric, you’d get a free yard, or something like that. It would inspire me to shop here a bit more. All in all, a great addition to this end of JP!

I think Jp Knit and Stitch is just darling. This mother daughter owned business has a warm feel to it. The space is beautiful and well organized. They have lots or yarn and a nice little selection of cheerful cotton prints,(including some that’s organic and reasonably priced) that would be great for quilts or kids clothing.
I went in once when there was a knitting session going on and the group of ladies all seemed to be having a good time.
It is typical that when I go in whomever is working is probably up to something but that sort of thing doesn’t bother me, they have always been nice and helpful when I spoke up.
The selection of fabrics and notions is rather limited but I’m happy to have a place to run to when I need to buy thread or needles.
If you live in the area and quilt or knit (or want to learn how) then I recommend popping your head in.
A little yarn and fabric store seems like a risky business to start. Especially with the terrible lack of signage they have out front. Just passing by it’s easy not to notice them and the flower store that inhabited the space before had the same problem. Good luck Jp knit and stitch I hope you can make it work.

Signed up for a class, but they didn’t get enough people to hold it, so they emailed me that it was canceled. Great!
Then they didn’t refund me. I’ve asked at least 6 times and am getting no response from the store. The employees have assured me it’s going to go through, but now I’m going to have to go to my credit card company and dispute the charge just to get my money back for a class I never took.
Really disappointed in the customer service. I’ll go elsewhere for my next class.

Unique and fun fabrics in a clean, happy space. If I ever get my act together ad reupholster a chair, THIS is where I’m getting my fabric! For those that have sewing experience of any level, there are many patterns available for cool gifts and clothes. They also have a bunch of yarn but I’m not really into knitting.
I know they offer classes but I’m not sure of the details.
There’s also a children’s corner that my 2 yr old didn’t want to leave so it would probably be okay to bring a kiddo along for a class.
