Thrifty Threads

As far as thrift stores are concerned in Indy, this one get’s an A in my book.
While they do have some more expensive pieces in their «boutique», I’ve always found those items to be of good quality or name brand. I also find that they have some good vintage items and their furniture selection is large.
This place benefits Julian Center, a women’s shelter. It feels good to donate items here because you know it’s going to somewhere in your own community.

If you are into Goodwill shopping, yard sales, or second hand shopping, then I think you would enjoy Thrifty Threads. They have a large assortment of clothing and home goods. The store is neat and well kept, and it makes browsing easy. You may find new, used, and even vintage items. The prices range from what I consider low, such as $ 1.99 for a neck tie, to hundreds of dollars for a vintage fur coat! Yowza!

I absolutely adore this store! Several years back I scored three vintage LANE Acclaim tables for $ 40 each and have sworn by this place ever since.
While prices may vary, it all goes to support The Julian Center of Indiana and help domestic violence victims/​families get back on their feet. Because of this, more people and companies are apt to donate here for the tax break. The result? You can find some primo merchandise if you have the patience to look.
Need a prom dress? My daughter does, and you’d better believe we hit them up. Wedding dress? They have those too, gorgeous ones in fact! I especially love scanning the glass jewelry cases for ‘new to me’ sterling bargains.
Another thing I recently discovered, Thrifty Threads has a work program for people recuperating from an injury on Workman’s Comp. So you can serve your community, volunteering and get a discount on great stuff doing so. A win, win, for sure — unless you have hoarding tendencies and it can certainly get out of control quick!

I love going to this place. There is a huge variety. You know your money is going to a great cause. There are great bargains!

I am not as excited as other reviewers.
1. Some items are way overpriced. I picked a pair of used boots with mud/​dirt in soles and they wanted $ 15 for those boots that I had to take home and wash… wth?
Under their «glass case» there was a Chanel wallet priced at $ 50. when I asked to see it, it was 100% fake yet they placed the wallet into real Chanel box. To make it more realistic? The wallet’s quality wasn’t real leather. It was imitation made in China! Chanel never makes wallets in China! The box however said «made in France».
2. They seem to have people who know people and those people call their friends and let their friends know when something WORTHY or good comes to store. So 90% of their item selection is very worn/​old crap. Everything GOOD doesn’t even make to the floor or ridiculously over priced.
They have in their «glass case» Juicy Couture diaper bag priced at $ 250… freaking nutz. Even on JC’s website you can buy a 100% leather tote for $ 148…these people don’t know prices nor can’t correctly priced bran name items.
All purchases are FINAL so you can’t return whatever it is you buy there.

I wasn’t as excited with Thrifty Threads as the other reviews. I was excited to learn Julian Center benefits from the sales so off I went. My first impression was a large cluttered Goodwill but things appeared fairly organized. Prom and wedding dresses were right up front for those needed this time of year. As I maneuvered my way the damp, musty order as you first enter hadn’t dissipated. Regardless, I continued my search. I found many huge differences in sizes mixed within the sections and spent more time than I’m patient for. If you have the patient they do have an abundance of clothing. Types of clothing are separated well though. I appreciate a bargain as much as anyone but the day before I had purchased several pieces of clothing (still new with tags) for just a couple dollars more than I found here. Jeans here were $ 4-​$ 7 dollars and I only paid $ 6 for new jeans the day before and $ 5 for Capri’s.
Some of the furniture was cheap enough if you’re into DIY projects, which I am, but again many were overpriced. The couple pieces I liked were $ 75 for 2 door/​3 shelf cabinet that was filthy and tattered and would have sold at a garage sale for $ 10. Two older cabinets in decent shape was $ 500 and $ 350 based solely on the brand name which was Ethan Allen. They were at least 15 – 20 years old. I understand items change daily but I felt like I had wasted a lot of time searching for a great bargain. I’ve seen folk’s fine great deals in large stores like this and a pro at building outfits at thrift store. I just couldn’t seem to appreciate Thrifty Threads as others do. Bravo for the person who has the imagination and time to find the great bargains here. I just don’t think it’s me unless I’m looking for a project piece.

We do both here: donate and purchase. It’s so easy!
When it’s time to clean house and get rid of old clothes or furniture, I fill up the back of the truck and we drive it out to Thrifty Threads. They always help us unload the car and offer a receipt.
When it was time to find a dining room table — the kind a new couple with a lot of recent marriage-​related expenses can afford — we looked no further than the furniture section of Thrifty Threads. It was a great deal, and they delivered it for $ 40. Now I have a new-​used dining table that friends and family can sit around.
And after loading the delivery van with a couple bags of clothes, my closets are better organized!
It feels good to know the money and items are going to a great cause, too!

Everything about Thrifty Threads reminds me of my Grandma’s house. From the musty smell that greets you at the door to the random selection of clothing spanning across the decades to the odds and ends jammed into every available corner, you’re sure to find some type of treasure. At the front of the store, you will find the «boutique» collection of clothing from more designer/​big name brands, prom/​wedding dresses, suits, and jewelry. In back, you have home goods, knick knacks, more clothing of all varieties, handbags, and books. Some of the prices are a little high for a «thrift» store but all the merchandise is higher quality than say Goodwill and money is for a good cause. For a mere $ 25 my sister managed to find a knee length jacket with faux fur collar, two Columbia zip up sweatshirts, a Dave Matthews Band hoodie for a friend, and two bracelets. Not too shabby. It’s worth a stop if you are in the area.

This is an amazing thrift store. I don’t know if it’s the people who work for the Julian Center (the great and worthwhile charity the proceeds from this place benefit) who sort through the donations efficiently to only offer the best stuff or if it’s simply that a higher end clientele donates here, but I saw a lot of excellent stuff.
I came in because I was enjoying a pool day with friends on the north side of town far from my home base and I wanted to go with them out to dinner and the bars later but I didn’t bring appropriate clothing. I found a cute floral baby doll dress that was clearly a recently purchased item for $ 6.99, the kind of thing I love to purchase secondhand because it makes me feel much better about spending money on fast fashion pieces that are not environmentally friendly. I also bought a cute cotton scarf to tie around my head to hide my pool hair for $.99 and a Victoria Secret bra in great shape in my size for $ 3.99. I am normally not the type to buy my undergarments second hand but because the clothing is first offered to underprivileged women before they go to sale, I figure its not that weird to buy a nice, gently used bra. I also intend to donate some of mine that I don’t particularly love. Donations happen from 9 – 5 through the week in the back of the store.
The prices are appropriate for what is offered. It’s not Value World prices, more on par with Goodwill or even Plato’s Closet, but you are paying for several things. Firstly the quality of the items. The barely worn Elle Tahari heals I saw (that are still on the Saks website right now) for $ 20 is a deal; even though spending $ 20 on used shoes might not make sense to everyone, but if you understand how much the shoes originally cost and how well they were made, it does. Same with gently used Seven for All Mankind jeans for $ 19.50. That is a steal as well. You are paying the people who select the items so you don’t have to sort through tons of crap, and of course, to maintain the charity.
Personally, I think that the fact that they do price their high end items a little higher than the rest of the things they offer proves that they acknowledge the quality and they put thought into their offerings. I appreciate that, and even though I would obviously rather pay Value World prices, I like knowing that the money is going to a good place.

$ 2.50 for a nice travel bag I’m going to use on my trip back home? $ 12 for a pair of Seven jeans? SCORE! Supporting the Julian Center by getting such great deals?! I’m there!
Aaah, yes, I’m excited. You would be too if you were a broke college student. ^_​_​^ Go support a great cause and score some nice stuff.

Wow– I didn’t know this place was here or exactly what it was. I had a bit of time before a dinner date, so I stopped in here for some quick shopping. This is not your average thrift (junk) store. Everything here was in excellent condition and pretty cute, too.
Proceeds from Thrifty Threads benefit the Julian Center. You can donate at the register (they had a little bucket out), but the signs stated that’s what’s benefited. So– Really great idea.
The only downside is that they close at 6 during the week. I got there about 5:30 not really realizing that. I was there for about a half hour and I ended up with three tank tops, a long sleeved shirt and a couple bracelets.

I score amazing things here. I’ve gotten multiple pairs of designer shoes here. They have everything from shoes, handbags, housewares, jewelry, etc. and everything goes to a good cause. Go often, they bring out new merchandise all the time.
They do close early so make sure you check their hours.

I love this store. Why? Because they have racks up front that are easy to get through. I get so frustrated at Goodwill, pawing through racks, looking for my size. While Thrifty Threads does have racks like that, the section up front is much easier to navigate. I bought a winter coat here for $ 10 (only needed new buttons), several evening dresses, an interview suit … you name it. A lot of items still have the original tags. I bought a pair of brand new Banana Republic pants for about $ 7. The prices are a little higher than Goodwill but the quality is much better. They even have a decent men’s selection. Best of all, the store benefits the Julian Center.

I love Goodwill. They are a stand-​up organization with a noble cause. That said, I love Thrifty Threads more. Why, you ask? Because TT proceeds support the Julian Center, a live-​in shelter for domestic abuse victims and their children that acts as an intermediary between their old life and the new one they are about to start.
I’ve got a ton of gently used clothes that at one point looked great in the store, and not so great in my possession at home. Some things I wore once and forgot about. I’ve got a couple of sweaters still tagged that will probably never see light of day until I take them to Thrifty Threads. TT will turn around and sell them for pennies on the dollar of their worth and somehow be able to make money. Some of the women’s clothing donations (especially suits) go directly to the victims themselves (after thorough cleaning.)
The great other thing about my donations to TT? I receive a receipt that is legit for me to write off the value of the goods from my federal income tax income liability. Last year those several donations of several hundred dollars worth of clothes kept me from owing to getting a slight refund.
Helping those in need and helping my wallet at the same time. Now, if I can keep from buying clothes I don’t wear… but if the volume of clothes for sale at thrifty is any indication, I’m not the only one with the same problem. So donate and shop in good measure, you will be helping many people (and some clothes) start a new life.

Two things hit me as soon as I walked in the door at Thrifty Threads — the overwhelming musty-​meets-​mothball smell that says many of the items in here haven’t seen the light of day in some time and the lack of adequate lighting. Jenn’s use of «warehouse’ in her description is pretty accurate — it’s dark and spacious and the clothes, housewares, furniture and odds-​n-​ends are somewhat haphazardly arranged, well, deposited. The best part of my visit was seeing a pink satin bra sitting on a glass shelf next to some assorted glasses and candlesticks — I know, somebody put it down there after second thoughts, but it still made me smile.
I didn’t look through the clothes either because, honestly, even if there had been something here worth saving, I wouldn’t have been able to see it –too dark for me, especially after descending on the interior after riding without sunglasses around on a sunny, cloudless day. Okay, I went in here hoping to find some shades, I admit it! I did actually see some decent designer shoes in fair shape, but that is one thing I just can’t seem to buy used — unless for a costume.
I applaud Laura P. for her ability to find wearables here and give them new life, but I’m not that imaginative I suppose. I do think this is a good place to hunt for little doo-​dads like the swan Jenn mentions… you really never know what you’ll find. I did find two square plates with a bamboo motif that I intend to use as pillar candle holders — at .67 each, a true bargain!

The sign billed ‘Threads as «gently used clothing and housewares» or something to that effect. But the big, dark warehouse with rows and rows of ‘80s clothing is reminiscent of a Salvation Army.
I didn’t brave the clothes, but a gander at some odds and ends for the home revealed a little treasure. A small, pink vintage swan adorned with flowers and jewels was going for $ 14, but looked like it was growing mold. And there were a couple of statues that reminded me of childhood trips to Laredo, where my mother would indulge her hobby of collecting Lladros, porcelain figures in big hats and flowing dresses.

GOD do I love a good thrift store with quality items. Thrifty threads, why yess you are! 10 items: $ 21.85. Doesn’t get much better than 2.00 an item.
My finds: a satin prom dress in fuscia that is a going to have a second life as at cocktail length. A fleece hoodie that kept me warm during the cold camping trip, Michael Kors leather sandals, an african one-​shoulder dress that will be altered and gorgeous, a super cute sailing vest… again I emphasize my total.
Last weekend was 50% off everything in the store, I did not know that until I went up to the register or else I am sure I would have filled up my friends mini-​van. But then again it is not like I need any more clothes.
Even without the 50% the items were worth every penny… shop here for great deals on amazing clothing!!!
