Sullivan Hardware & Garden

I started buying my vegetable and herb plants and annual and perennial flowers here about 3 years ago, and keep coming back because of the amazing selection and high quality of the plants. The plants are all always very healthy, which is not something I was finding at the big chain home improvement stores.
Today, I bought a selection of heirloom tomato plants including one called «Bloody Butcher»…how could I resist? They also had a new hybrid named «Indy», and so I had to get one of those too! Peppers (sweet, jalapeño and red chili!), eggplant, herbs and a flat of assorted annuals and a potted perennial. I managed to stick to my list this year, which is hard given the huge selection available… but…not great to end up with the problem of wandering around the yard holding plants looking for «just one more spot» to plant something…
The staff are always very friendly and knowledgeable; they know exactly where everything is, and can answer any questions about any plant.
And…the popcorn… fresh popcorn in the back of the hardware part of the store… just follow the aroma and scoop a bag to munch on while you shop!
Parking can be a little tight at peak times… so I recommend going at a slightly off hour if possible…4:30 on a Friday was excellent.

Do not shop at this store. Our truck was broken into: a «smash and grab», in their small parking lot. The employees told us it had happened 8 times in the past couple of weeks. I went in to find the manager because only a teenage employee had approached us. The «owner» dashed out of sight and the manager walked quickly away from me. I had to yell to get her to stop and discuss our problem in «their» parking lot. She confirmed many customers cars broken into in the last couple of weeks.
Over $ 500 in repairs. I called Sullivan’s to see if they would give us some kind of discount on a purchase for our trouble. A manager said he would talk to the owner and call me back. 2 days later a call back, «we discussed your problem with the owner and at this time all we can offer is an apology». I responded that they are losing a customer and the manager said we are willing to accept that and we are sorry. So moral of the story, this was an easy fix to their negligence to protect there customers property when they knew of a serious problem. They claim they have «teenagers» working in the parking lot for a presence to help. They are putting a teenage worker in a dangerous situation.
My hope is that no one is hurt because of the owners negligence. And that future customers read this and see the owner for a «money first» and «employees and customer safety last» kind of store.

Bottom line: it is not easy or safe to buy your products. I understand that life is not perfect. But I also understand true customer services. Sullivan’s will sell an item but they do not understand true customer service.

My first visit to the Sullivan’s in Indy really changed my impression of them as a whole. Not that it was negative… it’s just that the store in Cicero (which was my only point of reference) bears no resemblance to this except name only… much smaller.
For a Do It Best operation, this place is larger than average. The layout is very intuitive and I didn’t have any issue navigating the aisles. The greenhouse area was slick (and humid) but very well laid out.
My most recent visit was to investigate Big Green Egg smokers with my Dad and this place does NOT disappoint. Pretty sure they bill themselves as the largest dealer in Indiana of Big Green Eggs and I believe it. I estimate there were at least two dozen or more on the showroom floor along with ever type of accessory you could want. The salesman that worked with us was very knowledgeable and gave us some good nuggets of information and recommendations.
One note… prices on everything are generally higher than a big box. If you are looking for commodity type items then you can go to your local Home Depot and save some. But there is a lot of stuff you won’t find elsewhere and you might be inclined to just pick it up here.

I’m still new at this whole gardening thing, but let me tell you: Sullivan’s is IT!
I swung in a couple of weekends ago when I was planning out the layout of the backyard and not only was I blown away by the selection of goodies that they have, but the staff was out of this world! I was so impressed by their knowledge and they literally had a recommendation for every single thing I was trying to create in my yard. I will most certainly be returning with my partner in crime to get the ball rolling on some more outdoor projects that I have in the works this summer!
I will say: the prices had me like WOAH, but the quality is awesome… well worth the extra cash!

This is a fantastic store. The staff are very helpful and friendly. I bought a Christmas tree from here a few months ago, and I’m getting my outdoor flowers and decorations from here during the spring. My only regret is that I don’t have more money to spend here!

I suspect Sullivan is a very good hardware store. I know for sure they are a great Christmas store! They consistently have healthy, well-​proportioned Christmas trees and every year I count on them for a Fraser Fur. Plus, they have a popcorn machine and a toy choo-​choo running in the greenhouse. The place totally reminds me of the movie «A Christmas Story».

We purchased a 9 ft. tall pre-​lit Christmas tree 2 years ago on sale, still over $ 400.00 cost. The first time we assembled it, two strands of lights did not work. I called Sullivan and was advised to purchase a test tool, did that and was able to revive failed lamps. Second year a different strand did not work so we They told me that I had the wrong repair tool and wanted me to purchase a different tool but I did not. My wife took the section to Sullivan and the lady who is the Christmas tree expert could not identify the brand (even though they sold it to us and probably still sell the same tree) it but asked us to leave it with her to repair it. No call from them for several months so my wife called and was told that it could not be repaired & to pick it up. Sullivan Hardware & Garden never even offered to replace the lights on the defective section. My wife picked up the section in August and this week tried to assemble the tree and found out that they gave her a section from a different tree that does not fit. Sullivan may have the largest selection of artificial Christmas trees in the state but they don’t know their inventory nor did they make any attempt to make this right. Even Wal-​Mart would have honored a situation like this better than Sullivan did so buy elsewhere please! Now we must purchase a new tree,
Sullivan hardware and garden has lost a customer forever and that is a shame because I like to shop in smaller retail stores.

BRAVO to Sullivan’s Hardware for their Black Friday radio ads encouraging us to enjoy family and SLEEP IN on Friday because their deal doesn’t start until 10am!
This makes me more loyal than ever to my neighborhood hardware store. I hope the Sullivan family and their employees enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday and their season is a bright and profitable one.

Sullivans is a notch above. It’s definitely more than a typical hardware. Their employees are friendly & helpful. In the summer they have a great assortment of beautiful flowers birdbaths & outdoor collectibles etc. Anytime my husband needs something a little unusual or just an everyday repair, he heads there.
Christmas time there is great. Lots of trees all decorated, many assorted decorations, & a little house with goodies & great smells. They carry specialty sauces too. –sure gets you in the Holiday spirit!

The flowers here are unbelievable! They have the best, easiest to care for hanging baskets and pre-​potted arrangements.
A bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. All the staff is very friendly and helpful and will go out of the way to help you find what you need. They also will special order it if they don’t carry it!
Just a side note, the free popcorn works wonders to keep my 3 year old occupied!

Sullivan’s is how all hardware stores should be… big enough to carry just about everything you would need from a hardware store (minus lumber) but small enough that the smell of free popcorn wafts freely through the air.
It pays to sign up for their email list… it’s a great way to get the scoop on sales at their warehouse, and invites to the seasonal open houses. (Just attended a holiday open house with hors d’oeuvres and free beer, all while poking around a hardware store. When was the last time you were able to do THAT at Lowe’s or Menards?)
Sure the prices may be a bit higher than the big box stores, but I’ll pay the extra $.05 on the dollar to support a local business. Besides that, I probably make up for the difference in the free popcorn and free, friendly advice that I partake of every time I visit.

The best nursery/​garden suppy place I’ve found since becoming a Hoosier. (Indeed, my review is based only on the garden supply section of Sullivan’s, and even more specifically, on their selection and supply of herbs (especially mint).)
There are lots of garden shops in Indy, including a bunch that look from the outside like real finds. But by and large, the selection at these other places is not nearly what it could be.
At Sullivan’s, the selection is wonderful. In my experience, this is one of the few places to carry more than just one or two types of mint. In addition to the ubiquitous Spearmint and exotic-​for-​Indianapolis-​but-​basic-​most-​anywhere-​else Chocolate mint, Sullivan’s had Apple mint, Pineapple mint, and a very interesting Pennyroyal mint (the closest thing to Corsican mint I’ve been able to find since coming here).
The latter (Pennyroyal) has an intense, almost toothpaste-​y aroma to it – and it grows almost vine-​like as ground-​cover. Of course, like all mint, you want to be careful. You can’t kill it, and it’ll absolutely take over if you don’t watch it. But let’s face it, there are worse things than having a bed of delicious Pennyroyal mint to take care of. Weeding a flower garden has never left me smelling better!
PS — If anyone knows where a handy Hoosier can get his green thumbs on Corsican mint, I’m all ears.

Friendly, helpful, no question is a stupid question. And Pat Sullivan is the funniest knuckleheaded goofball (I mean that in a good way) proprietor in the fair city of Indianapolis. He is worth hearing with Dick Crum on the Saturday morning Home and Garden Show on WIBC FM 93.1, and the radio show is often broadcast from the 71^st and Keystone store. Anyway, afterwards Pat is working in the store. He’s no prima donna. He works as hard as his employees. Speaking of which, there isn’t a nicer bunch than the helpful folks who work at Sullivan Hardware. The store is amazing at Christmas time and the rest of the year it has fabulous stuff for the lawn, garden and home. Check out the yellow house in back, where Pat’s wife Beth has transformed into a fabulous gift store called Wildflowers. I have nothing negative or lukewarm to say about Sullivan. Go there. Hang out there. It’s the Place To Be for special occasions all year with grilling contests, Turkeyfest and more.
I’m pretty sure I’d love working there… in the mean time, I’m there at least once a week as a faithful shopper.
When you go, you’ll probably find me in the birdwatchers department, pining over another feeder or gizmo I’m just gonna have to put in my yard.

I went here to purchase a Big Green Egg. Briefly after hitting the grill section I was greeted by a pleasant employee. He was able to answer a few questions I had thoroughly and took care of the transaction. They loaded the heavy grill (140LBS) into my truck, and provided a little rope to help secure it, making sure I was fully satisfied before I set sail. Great service, helpful representatives. This place is far from my home but I plan to do some shopping here in the future.

Went for paint and the person who helped me was fantastic. I also loved browsing through the store to look at all they had to offer. What a great variety in plants and outdoor everything!

Each year, we head to Sullivan Hardware & Garden to buy our Christmas tree. No matter what, we find what we’re looking for, even though we wait until Dec. 18 to buy it each year!
The folks at Sullivan offer the best customer service anywhere. The staff is supersized at the holiday time to deal with the rush in the garden department, and there are teens and young college students everywhere you look to help cut trees, trim trees, put trees on top of the car, etc. It’s incredibly quick and painless – and we love it!
In addition to the tree buying, the kids love to look at the huge train display inside one of the garden buildings, and we like to peruse the aisles in search of new holiday trimmings and other fun home décor items. In all, the prices are very reasonable. And, as I said, you can’t beat this customer service – so the price is right no matter what!
