If you find yourself frequenting the Northern end of Pendleton Pike on the Northeastside of Indianapolis, then there’s a pretty good chance you’ve already driven by Breath of Life Christian Bookstore, a small storefront bookstore in the same strip center as Buffalo Wild Wings, Sandra Noodles, and a couple other retail businesses. It’s an easy to miss bookstore, though, with a rather light blue sign amidst a building that is about half vacant. Owned by the pastor of the nearby Abounding Grace Church of God, Breath of Life isn’t going to overwhelm you like some of the national faith-based retailers including Family Christian Stores or Lifeway. Unlike those stores, it’s also not likely to have everything you could possibly want within the realm of the faith journey. Breath of Life is simply a small, locally owned Christian bookstore run by a pastor whose spirit I really enjoyed and whose peaceful presence makes browsing her little store a rather meditative experience. Breath of Life carries your usual assortment of faith-based items including books, music, pamphlets, decorative items, a little bit of clothing, Bibles, and items for churches. I was impressed that the majority of the items were affordable, and while I didn’t make a purchase on this particular visit I did see several appealing items in books &CD’s. The store was fairly wheelchair friendly, but what was more impressive was that they were acutely aware of wheelchair access and offered on more than one occasion to move something if it needed moved. If I were to rate Breath of Heaven solely on the basis of its function as a «store,» it would likely fall into the 3-star range. It’s an incredibly basic bookstore, but I was genuinely appreciative of the pastor/owner and her warmth and hospitality. Thus, I’m taking Breath of Heaven up a star simply for being a warm and hospitable place for those seeking a more indie, locally owned faith-based bookstore.
