The Red Kettle is Idyllwild’s original family restraunt dating back to 1920 when it was known as the Coffee Cup. Later renamed by Jan Boss as Jans Red Kettle in 1979 and then again to the Red Kettle in January 2007. We are an American, Idyllwild local family owned operated establishment serving home style cooked food daily year round. We specialize in great american food, omeletts, burgers, large portions and a welcoming enviroment. Please come in and visit our friendly staff waiting to make your Idyllwild experiance a great one!

History

Established in 1920.

The Red Kettle was started in 1920 as the Coffee Cup and later changed to Jans Red Kettle in 1979. When Jan retired it was again changed to the Red Kettle in January 2007. Sever famous people have made the Red Kettle a must stop over the years such as Clark Gable, Elvis, John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Jan Michael Vincent, David Horowitz, Fritz Colman, Dolly Parton, Sandra Bullock, Brad Pitt & Jennifer Aniston just to name a few.

Sadly the only good thing about this place was the coffee. Our food was cold and the waffle looked like they just defrosted it and stuck it on a plate. We also got the highly raved about cinnamon roll and it was hard as a rock! The waitresses were rude and overcharged us for our food. When I asked them about it they didn’t even apologize. There are way better places in town so don’t waste your time here.

While this restaurant held promise, the reality is that it is just a normal greasy spoon. Wait was reasonable for a long weekend, but it took more than 45 minutes from the time we ordered to the time we received our food. The food was only decent. The home fries and the hash browns were overcooked bordering on burned. We practically had to beg for a coffee refill and when we asked for water, it never came. One last thing, I would have given an extra star if ANY of the staff greeted us with a «welcome» or «good morning» instead of «how many» and «what do you want to drink».

Great breakfast. Probably the best omlett I have ever eaten. I had the Avacado bacon omlett which came with crispy hash browns and I opted for delicious biscuits and gravy. My husband had the waffle with bacon and eggs. Good quality ingredients. We had to what quite a while as it was a busy Sunday morning. Nice waitress and lots of pretty good coffee.

It was a day after new year and the place was packed with brunchers! But the service was very attentive and quick. My French dip was awesome (and I am from LA, the city that gave birth to the French dip and I take it seriously). Very cozy place. Was a pleasure:)

I loved this place. Small and cozy. I wish there were more places like this where I live. My husband & I both had chicken fried steak with hash browns. It was delicious, the gravy was so good. Even the toast was good. The customer service was excellent as well. I would recommend this place if your visiting Ildlewild.

Cosy upbeat décor and lovely space. Really charming but my mushroom omelette had a sticky plastic tasting cheese on it that got stuck to my teeth. Most disconcerting. Could not finish it. Fresh milk for coffee had to be asked for. But was brought efficiently. Waitress was too efficient and took unfinished food too soon, we were still eating.

My friend and I got breakfast this morning. We started with chili cheese fries which were pretty good. We both enjoyed them. Then I got a philly cheese steak sandwich. It was smaller than I had expected and I was shocked to see the steak not sliced. The sandwich itself was really good though. My friend got a club sandwich and she absolutely loved it.

Call me a brekkie snob, but I was kind of let down that this place wasn’t as awesome as I thought it was going to be. Don’t get me wrong the restaurant’s view was gorgeous from where we sat (patio bar outside facing the rest of the quaint town). The shade of their tree threw us under a dancing frenzy of glittering sunlight as we ate our breakfast.
FOOD:
I order what I normally would order (due to dietary constraints there’s not much to eat when eating out). I opted for their vegetarian spinach omelette with an extra serving of tomatoes. It came with a side of potatoes (cooked in you choice of hash brown style or skillet tossed). The eggs were yummy, not overcooked, just slightly under so that it’s still kind of runny but still fluffy to the tongue (my fave kind of omelette style). The dish was overall decent, but not something to rave about and certainly not a place to go out my way for, but worth a try if you haven’t yet. I would come back for the view alone though. :)

The food is delicious. The service was great. Price is worth what you get. Both times we had to get the Breakfast Quesadilla. You cannot go wrong with anything on the menu.

Saturday morning breakfast so it was pretty crowded inside which made it very loud as well. Food was good but there just wasn’t any view or atmosphere. The servers were getting slammed so service suffered and it took awhile to get items asked for such as creamers and more butter.
We enjoyed Tommy’s Kitchen so much more the previous morning and its just up the road in a very pretty, less busy part of town.

Love this place!!! I go over atleast 2 times a month when I go ridding or driving up in the mountains.
The potatoes scramble dish for breakfast is awesome. If you go on Sunday try to go there early because it gets packed, but totally worth the wait.

I had a wonderful experience here. My server was awesome!!! When I asked if I could sit on the patio with my dog she said dogs aren’t allowed on the patio but there’s a little alleyway where he could sit right next to me. Off to a good start, and there was even a little dog water dish. I was greeted right away with a menu and promptly served water and coffee. I ordered the spinach, mushroom, bacon, and cheese omelet with egg white and added avocado, my omelet included hash browns, and sourdough toast. My breakfast was absolutely delicious the omelette was perfect the sourdough toast was so large I was only able to eat one piece. Hashbrowns were good and the service was wonderful. I’ll definitely be going back to this place. oh and I ordered a side of sausage for Chance and he loved them, he ate every last bite!

The place was packed, but the staff was ON IT! It is a smooth running machine.
We had a cinnamon roll to start. Huge, delicious and smothered in cinnamon and frosting. No dry roll here.
We also had 2 Cake Combo… substituting turkey bacon in. It came with 2 fluffy pancakes and 2 eggs any way you like. Had s side of salsa. The salsa was perfect, and tasted homemade. Also had some delicious iced tea. Nice and strong.
We also had the biscuits & gravy and a side of sausage. Good. And you get 3 links instead of 2. Also they have a variety of cool creamers to choose from for your coffee.
Excellent. We’ll be back!
