History
Established in 1996.
The restaurant opened in 1996 in a small building along Highway 79 a few miles east of Hutto at the train stop of Frameswitch. Out front, along the road stood «Ferdinand,» a larger than life Hereford statue. As traffic increased and the road needed to be widened, the café was moved to Hutto. Part of Ferdinand, his head, was mounted on the top front of the building. In October of 2006 the café was purchased by the current owners Roger Joughin. and Ron Yaudes.
Hippos Everywhere
In 1915, a circus train stopped in Hutto and a hippopotamus escaped off the train to wallow in the cooling waters of nearby cottonwood creek. The engineer telegraphed ahead to «Hold the train. There’s a hippo loose in Hutto.» Thus began our claim to fame. In the 1920’s the local school chose the Hippo as their mascot. Just down the block is «Henrietta,» a hippo statue that’s great for family pictures.
