Shyn Salon

Lacey is the best and so is this salon. I’ve been back 3 more times and I am pleased to say I’ve found my stylist for life.
Everyone here is supper nice and they care about their customers. The salon is also very clean and I’ve seen kids and adults come through.

I’ve been going to Katarina for 4 – 4.5 years now. I have dark hair and olive skin. I was frustrated by asking for dark brown highlights from the different salons I would visit — and somehow my highlights would be light brown that faded to blonde. Katarina truly «gets it» and does a wonderful job on color, cut and style. Yes, you pay a bit more money but you get what you pay for. She uses high quality color that stays a long time and does not fade 5 shades lighter after a month. I also like Katarina as a person. She is honest and will tell you if something does not or will not look good.
I have not had my hair done by any of the other stylists, however, they are always kind and happy when I visit the salon.
The salon manager Jonathan is professional and a sweetheart.
I enjoy the minimalist and modern environment of the salon. I highly recommend Shyn Salon!

My wife doesn’t write Unilocal reviews, so I am writing one for her: Shyn Salon is awesome. Whenever Katarina does her hair, it is money well spent, and I tend to be a pretty frugal husband. Don’t think twice! Go!

I have kept going to see Stefani since I originally posted this review. She is the only hair person I have been to see in Houston consistently… everyone else made me feel awkward because I wasn’t always spending money on more services or was too expensive or was tricky to talk to.
Stefani helped me get started on some awesome dying stuff and their «mini highlights» session is really easy on your pocketbook as far as highlights go. Haircuts have continued to be awesome. My husband also goes here and she is really good with his very tricky hair, and helps us out if he needs a little something fixed every once in a while.
Also, be sure to nice the parking on on the side street! It’s a little hard to spot.

I had an appointment with Stefani for partial highlights and a cut for the first time today, and she did a fabulous job! In fact, I would honestly say that she is the best stylist I’ve ever visited. Before she began, she carefully and thoughtfully considered the best approach to styling my hair, and she was terrific about talking me through her plans and thoroughly explaining each step of the process. By the end of my appointment, I was convinced that Stefani truly is an exceptional stylist. My hair looks 100% better than it did when I arrived, and I so appreciate the time and thought she put into every detail of the process. And, she has a terrific personality and is fun to talk with (which makes the time go by more quickly :-). I would recommend Stephani without hesitation! She is terrific!

I’ve had long hair for as long as I could remember and now wanted to cut it all off to donate to Locks of Love. I was a little nervous but Jen came highly recommended to me by a friend and I was definitely not disappointed. I love my new short hair.

I had my highlights done by Stephanie and I have to say that it was amazing. I had my haircut by someone else and she did a good job but the reason that I will continue to have my hair done by Stephanie is because she was honest when I asked a question about a treatment. The other stylist kept pushing me to get it and kept saying that it was great for my hair but Stephanie was honest and said that my hair did not need it. She will have my continued business and I even brought my daughters to see her; needless to say, their hair color was fabulous!
I would also like to compliment Jonathan, the receptionist, because he is so sweet and as soon as I walked in the door, made me feel welcome and comfortable. Overall, it was a great experience and I HIGHLY recommend Shyn Salon! :)

I returned in November to adjust an awkward stage in my hair. You know when the only thing that looks good is a pony tail or a bun? Nothing makes sense and the effort no longer feels worthwhile?
So, I went back to see Stefani. I really like her. She is a great listener. She helped me out with a hair issue that has drastically improved the condition of my hair and gave me an «easy to style» haircut. I no longer want to pull out my hair as I’m styling it due to frustration.
So, I’m pretty pleased and this place has been upgraded to five stars. Maybe next time, I’ll add some flair to my hair :)

3. Best. Haircut. of my Life. This is the haircut I’ve been trying to get since I was seven. It swings. It *bounces.* It looks great straight, pretty wavy, and this fabulous Marilyn-​esque thing happens when I curl it. MARILYN, you guys. With decidedly minimal effort/​product, MY HAIR MARILYNS. And then that looks all amazing and soft and gorgeous after I’ve slept on it, because somehow this is the most low-​maintenancey perfect ‘do ever.
Casey, you’re a magician.

I grow my hair out for Locks for Love, and went in for a trim. Told the stylist that I donate my hair and that keeping the length is very important to me. He proceeded to cut off about 4″ off my hair! I noticed it was noticeability shorter right after the cut but did not know how much shorter until I got home.
It takes 10″ to donate my hair and the guy just took 40% of it off. My hair was not damaged as I do not color or perm my hair (part of the process when you donate your hair). He even commented on how nice/​healthy my hair was. There was no reason why that amount of hair needed to come off.
Plus, the haircut was boring and uninventive. I asked the stylist for layerS, big S, and he gave me one layer. Same length everywhere. I asked twice and eventually I just got tired of asking him and gave up.

After purchasing a Bloomspot deal ($ 35 for a $ 75 haircut) for Shyn Salon, my sister and I booked our appointments at the same time on a Thursday morning. It was pretty easy to book an appointment on a weekday, and I really like how they were very prompt in returning email requests via phone.
The salon itself is a neat little place, with an urban and modern feel to it. Parking isn’t so bad — there’s plenty of street parking and a small lot for their property. The receptionist quickly greeted us and pointed us in the direction of our stylists. I had Stefani and my sister had Kip, and we were very happy with what each of them did with our hair! Don’t let their young looks deceive you — each of these stylists have almost a decade of experience under their belts, and they definitely knew what they were doing. On top of being very friendly, they gave great suggestions on what hairstyles would look good on us and how to manage/​care for our tresses.
While the haircut prices are comparable to other higher-​end salons ($ 75 women, $ 50 men, $ 30 kids), the quality was worth it, and definitely more so with a Bloomspot deal! I hope to come back again soon!
TIP: They also do makeup services with Smashbox goodies ($ 85+). They also sell Smashbox in the salon, even with great sale items at the receptionist’s desk.

I originally wanted to book an appointment with Katarina, based on SHYN’s About stylist column, but she was booked for the times that I am available. I hesitate…
My girlfriend recommended Kip. She said he’s good … so after a little hesitation, I took her word for it.
Uhhm, Kip wasn’t good. Kip was DAMN GOOD, to say the least!!! I love my haircut, and by that, I mean A LOT! (And I am a picky and particular type. Ask any friend that knows me, they will vouch this to be true of me.)
I brought in several photos of my favorite celebrity (particular ones always come prepared, hehe), I described in detail what I am looking for, and he was able to cut and style just the way I envisioned it to look like.
I am still loving my haircut and style today and most definitely want a repeat with Kip sometime in the near future.
Kip was wonderful. He has an adorable shy nature, but cool swag. And all together, Kip delivers confidence and beauty so naturally.
So be a go-​getter and get an appointment set up with Kip asap!
I had already handed out 2 of his business cards on the day after my haircut to a couple of ladies at HH. They loved the July deal and if they’re reading this, ask for Kip!

Since this is a business that seems to frequently have deals out on all our favorite deal sites, I think it’s important to review them as much as possible!
I think they are a repeat customer on Bloomspot, which is where I got my deal for a haircut. (I think it was valued around $ 40 for $ 80?) The deal seemed fine, but it was interesting that the cut had to be with any 1 of 3 people for the deal to be valid.
I was absolutely DESPERATE for a haircut, okay. Split ends were starting to take over my head. As soon as I bought the deal, I called the salon for an appointment. They didn’t have anything until the following week, so I said I’d call later once my schedule was more finalized. So I called the next week. Same story. It took me at least 3 weeks to get an appointment. It doesn’t help that I work 830 – 530, but their Saturdays seem to book up weeks or maybe even months in advance.
Ultimately I left work early one day to get my hair cut by Stephanie. She was really sweet! We both have chiuweenies (half dachshund, half chihuahua doggies) so we bonded instantly. I appreciated that she gave me her honest opinion when I asked for it («should I bring back my bangs?» or «is my length too long for me?») which is often rare because stylists can sometimes be way more concerned with giving you the answer they think you want instead of what you really want – the truth.
She suggested that my length was pretty long for my face and said she’d take off two or so inches. She did a pretty quick cut job and then styled my hair. It was MUCH shorter than I had expected. I didn’t particularly love it when I walked out of the salon, but as it’s grown out some and I’ve learned to style it on my own, I like it much better now. It’s clear that the more my layers grow out, the better it’ll look… especially compared to when I first walked out!
I thought my experience here was fine, I’m just not sure I’m ready to call it my regular Houston salon.

I tried SHYN again and it will be my last visit. I saw someone cheaper who gave me a full highlight and cut. We started at noon and prior to starting I asked if I would be done by 230 giving the stylist more than enough time and she also said I would be out of there before 230 as I had another appointment. That didn’t happen. Not only did I get out of there after 300 and had to tell the stylist again I was missing another appointment (which I was charged for) and I was the only client in the salon. Finally, she finished and the salon’s power had blown out so they could not run my card. I bought the Unilocal deal and only received $ 50.00 off instead of $ 75.00. Let’s just say I lost a lot of time and money that day. And while checking out, the guy at the front desk was incredibly rude.
My hair looked good, much shorter than I expected though the color was spot on. Sadly, I can no longer recommend SHYN salon due to the price and lack of proper service.

I have never loved my hair cut and style SO much!
I found out about SHYN through Tidbits Treats (if you don’t subscribe, you really should!) It was $ 40 for a shampoo, cut, blow dry and style (an $ 80 value).
I made a Saturday afternoon appointment with Kip. I was surprised that the salon wasn’t super busy, but the ambiance was nice and relaxing while still upbeat. I noticed the patron next to me was sipping on a glass of wine. I wasn’t offered one, but that could have been because I was using my Tidbits Treat.
On top of being a total sweetheart, Kip gave me such a fresh and gorgeous cut. I told him I wanted a Kim Kardashian-​Rachel Zoe-​inspired style with glam waves. Kip absolutely knocked it out of the park. I have never received so many nice compliments on my hair. Today is Monday, and the style STILL looks amazing two days later.
It might be on the pricey side for routine hair cuts, but for a special occasion, like a wedding or a gala, I definitely recommend going here to get your hair done.

Katerina was great as she specializes in thin hair (yep, I mine is so soft and fine that it gives baby hair a bad name) but as a recent transplant from NYC I think that $ 80 for a cut is way too expensive — by the time you add tax & tip its $ 100 which is too prohibitively pricey for me. Especially in the Montrose area!
PROS: décor, service, coffee/​tea or wine, qualified and talented cutters
CONS: too expensive

I love the chill vibe of this place. It’s kind of like cottage-​meets-​soho loft if that makes any sense. Everyone here is very friendly and warm, from Vanessa and Johanna who greet you, to all the stylists, including Kip and Casey. (Might I add they offer you Diet Coke or wine. Um, hello.) But the reason I’m writing this review is to brag on Katarina Voss, the newest stylist. She is a master. I had cotton candy, bleached-​out hair and this girl was able to take me to a natural looking blonde (still light, but natural!) without further damaging my hair. Her haircuts are genius, too. She has a quick wit and a faaaabulous laugh and will listen to you blather on, which, really, who doesn’t want?
Go go go book an appointment!

I had my haircut by Leigh at this wonderful salon. She was very precise and left my hair looking fabulous. I love the emphasis on accurate cutting with proper scissors, instead of the mess that some stylists create with razors or quick cutting.
I recommended her and this Salon to a friend, and his hair cut came out quite nice as well!
They also have polite and attentive guest services.
