Hobbit Cafe

Hands down best atmosphere I’ve ever seen at any restaurant. Whether you want to eat healthy or not, they have an amazing meal for you. They also have a great selection of craft beers. Always great service and a fun time at The Hobbit.

I loved the Hobbit Café when I first tried it a couple years back, but it seems every time I go back, I’m more and more disappointed.
Usually I get my favorite, Caribbean Jerk Chicken with rice. Before, the chicken was seasoned well, blackened, and the «jerk sauce“was tasty. Now, the chicken is bland, soggy, and drenched with jerk sauce, as if to hide the fact that the chicken wasn’t cooked well. For the first time, I asked the waitress to take it back and I ordered a burger instead. The burger was decent, but was soaked in bleu cheese dressing and grease, making for a soggy burger. The burger wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t super satisfying.
I’ve had other burgers that also has the issue of being soggy and mediocre. The smoothes, in a small mason jar for $ 5, are nothing that you can’t make at home. I know its a smoothie, but it’s just so… underwhelming?
I’ve always had great servers here. But the food seems to get more and more unsatisfying. It’s cool that they give everything a Lord of the Rings themed name, but it doesn’t really save the food.

Terrible. Smelt and looked bad and the food was just meh at best.
Service was good, which is why I gave it two stars.

I really wanted to like this place but it just wasn’t going to happen. We first got seated in a cramped corner on the patio and water from the gutter kept dripping on my husband. We tried wiping it down and situating the table but nothing worked so we asked to move. The waitress was accommodating and pleasant. We moved to another cramped table on the patio that wasn’t covered with an umbrella. Right after we ordered, a bird pooped on the table. Not a great way to start off a meal.
Now on to the food and drinks — since we were there for brunch, I got a coffee and a Bloody Mary. On the plus side, the bellinis, mimosas, and bloody Marys were each $ 3.50. Although I didn’t particularly like the Bloody Mary, the coffee was decent. I liked how the menu offered many vegetarian options. I ordered the Portobello Mushroom Fajitas and Eggs which left me disappointed. The eggs and side of potatoes were very bland and the mushrooms tasted overly saturated with butter. My husband got the Greek Omelette which was more like a tomato omelet. There was hardly any feta cheese. My dad got a burger which he liked. The service was just eh — almost robotic.
Overall, I was disappointed and would not recommend this place. To be fair, I should probably give it another shot. I just don’t know when I will since there are so many great places in Houston.

Started our Saturday by having Brunch at the Hobbit Café. Started with refreshing herbal ice tea and Strawberry Lemonade.
We ordered the Poached Salmon Benedict and the Spinach and Mushroom Omelet, both served with casserole potatoes. It was very generous portions and we left full! This is a laid back, casual, neat place.
Have a nice open air porch with tablest outside and several separate rooms, each decorated different, to eat inside.

What a charming little place. We came here for lunch and it was quite busy but we were able to get a seat outside. The décor was adorable. Our waiter was a little swamped but another waiter who I assume is the owner was great.
I ordered a sandwich with turkey, advocado and bacon. It was very good, the only complaint I have about it is that the pieces of avocado were huge and right where you take the first bit so all you got was avocado. I wish it was spread around a bit.
The key lime pie was recommend by the owner and it was the best I have ever had. I want more in my mouth right now. Great place overall, I will be back when I am in town again!

Went here for brunch the other day. Have previously gone for dinner. Both experiences were good. I like the atmosphere of this place. Obviously it’s Lord of the Ring themed so if you’re a fan I recommend it just for that reason.
Food is good. I don’t remember the dinner I had as it was several years ago but I really enjoyed their brunch. I had the strawberry pancakes and my cohort had one of their omelettes. Admittedly, the food was luke-​warm when we received it but I still enjoyed my meal. Service was fast and friendly. Maybe my only complaint would be it’s noisy. That’s the nature of the restaurants that are converted residential houses though.
I would recommend this restaurant and most likely be returning.

Great place to grab a beer and hang out with friends! I must try more from this place because of the diverse menu and it all looks so good!
The place is decorated in lord of the rings memorabilia and the grandma lamps in each room were my favorite part!
We ordered the shrimp rolls after seeing a couple reviews and they are superb! I was expecting more of an egg roll because of the shape but they are more of cheese puffs item.
I wasn’t really craving anything greasy and decided on the chicken enchiladas verdes and they were good if you are craving a more healthy enchilada plate. The enchiladas themselves were a bit on the dry side but with a bit of beans on the fork, they’re perfect. The black beans and rice were great.
My boyfriend ordered the hickory burger (even though I begged him to get the avocado after seeing the table next to us) but it was still really good! They come on a wheat bun and the bacon and Barbeque sauce pair great! The burgers come with chips which are good but I would def order the fries next time!
Will be going back!

This place pretty great. Happy hour Monday to Friday 3 to 7 pm. The Gandalf full has a whole (or more) avocado. The sweet potato fries are good but I think the regular fries are better.
The place has cute memorabilia and good service.

After all the rave reviews of the Hobbit café I was really disappointed.
First of all, parking is atrocious. Their lot is very small and the flow of traffic is not good. I was forced to park on one of the side streets and walk to the restaurant. Luckily, it was after 7 pm or there’s a chance your car may get towed.
I was meeting a big group in the semi-​private room off to the side. There were probably about 10 of us and it was really cramped. It took the servers a long time to get our orders. When the food did come out they brought us someone’s else’s order. The server should figure out if none of us speak up when you are asking who ordered the chicken fajitas and then the next dish you obviously have the wrong group.
I ordered the lamb burger and opted to pay $ 2 extra for the sweet potato fries. Even though the portion was big and came with a bit of salad on top and cucumbers and onions, I was not impressed. It just tasted like a normal burger to me which kept falling apart. The fries were soggy and I sat thirsty for most of the time because the waitress was swamped with other customers. I paid $ 14 plus tip for my dish and just felt like it wasn’t worth all the hassle and mixups. Several people in my group had to wait a long time for condiments and Dessert to be brought too.
Hobbit café is really a novelty restaurant. What I really care about the most is the food which was mediocre. I will not be returning.

Family owned since the late sixties, Hobbit café was one of the first vegetarian friendly restaurants in Houston. Though they’ve evolved over the years, they do retain a healthy selection of vegetarian and vegan options with excellent choice of beer and cocktails. The jerk chicken burger, black bean burger and budain burger that our party tried were all delicious and worth another visit.

«So…how about those mimosas?»
I went with two friends, S– and A-​, to the Hobbit Café today — first time for all of us. It’s a cute, LotR-​themed joint built out of a one-​story house. Parking was pretty bad because they share with two other establishments — I’d recommend you carpool or even park on the back street.
Our waiter Tristen was very patient as the three of us eventually found each of our ways to the table. Accommodating, helpful, and cheerful, his service was a high point of our meal, though his attempts to hawk mimosas to us were resoundingly unsuccessful.
Those in search of lembas bread will be disappointed; rather, the menu boasts a huge array of American dishes, with an interesting mix of Mexican/​Caribbean specialties too. A– and I both ordered the lamb burger and S– ordered the jerk chicken. All of it came out pretty tasty, but the jerk chicken was definitely the best; lamb burgers were nothing to write home about. My strawberry lemonade came out frothy and delicate, and I appreciated that its sweetness was mild.
The price is reasonable, leans a little high but expected for the neighborhood. All in all, I’d definitely go again to try all the cool things they have on their menu!

Super disappointed with the service this time. Started off well but once we ordered dessert our server just disappeared. After 15 minutes we flagged down another guy and immediately he brought out the cake and our check. But then he disappeared too. We are now just sitting here waiting for anyone to notice us.
Food was good, but I’m so put off by the service today that I’m not sure if I want to come back. Literally still haven’t seen our original server, it’s been 30 minutes now. Actually no, I lie. I see him, he’s waiting other tables in another section.

I’ve heard so many great things about Hobbit Café, and being the major Lord of the Rings geek that I am, I thought I was going to be a huge fan — but honestly, I would not come back here. The food was good but nothing special, and if you’re coming here and expecting a cute Lord of the Rings style venue, you will definitely be disappointed. Some of the sandwiches have LOTR themed names and there are a few posters on the walls, but other than that there’s really no connection to the franchise whatsoever.
First of all, the ambiance was a huge no-​go for me. We came for dinner and it was already dark outside, so the dimness of the restaurant paired with no natural light made me feel really claustrophobic.
I ordered the Smaug’s Delight sandwich with shredded carrots on the side with the Mithril Mix smoothie (I’d heard you have to get a smoothie here, otherwise I normally wouldn’t order one). The smoothie was good and I liked that they served it in a mason jar, but I would not pay $ 5 for it. My sandwich was good, and I definitely appreciated that they were very generous with the avocado, but again nothing so special that I’d rush to return.
Also, the sandwiches come with a side of shredded carrots. I was initially really excited about this because I love carrot salad, but it was literally a heap of dry shredded carrots. If there were some dressing added I think it’d be good, but I didn’t finish them because who wants to just eat forkfuls of dry carrots? Lol not me! Also french fries are $ 2 extra as a side even if you ordered a burger, which seems odd to me.
The menu is so extensive that I’m sure there are other options that are more special, but personally I would not return. If I were with a group that wanted to come here, I wouldn’t complain, but I think there are so many other great Houston restaurants that I’m really not sure what the hype is here.

The environment was on point and the service is great. We had the black bean burger with seasoned and ℗ sweet potato fries.
The fries were excellent and the party is huge. They could put a few more vegetables and decrease the size of the patty (by a little). Outside of that, the Hobbit café is a great place to eat.

Came here around noon for Sunday brunch. My party of four waited for about 25 minutes to be seated which is reasonable. I like how their menu provided lots of healthy options, and their portion was generous.
I ordered their lamb burger with sauce onside and I didn’t enjoy this dish. The lamb patty was really really bland, it has distinctive smell of lamb, but that’s it. I tried to soak it in the cucumber sauce; I added salsa, ketchup and sriracha on it but they didn’t help at all.
I also tired their blueberry pancake, strawberry pancake and peanut butter chocolate chip pancake. They are pricy compare to other brunch place, and the size is not that impressive. I liked their peanut butter chocolate chip the most.
This café is very family friendly and has cute decoration, however I don’t think their food is that great compare to other brunch places in Houston.

This is a top eatery in Houston known for its kitschy atmosphere and other worldly food.
One word: peanut butter pancakes. Their pancakes are legendary and sadly only served during their amazing breakfast/​brunch. But, you can be sure to find something to delight your taste buds, I’ve tried the black bean burger, their (famous) chicken curry salad, and the avocado omelet. All of it was so good!
I recommend sharing because portions are huge. Their bar is lovely and I can sit on their patio with a pitcher of mimosas for hours. Sunday can be crazy, get their early (before 11:00)!

I want to eat everything here! The menu is slightly overwhelming, not overwhelming like the Cheesecake Factory menu but there is lots to choose from! We immediately decided to get breakfast food, we closed our menus and ordered. We were so hungry we didn’t even pay attention to the menu stating brunch was only on the weekends. So we already decided we are coming back to try brunch!
We then took 30 minutes deciding what to get! We ordered the shrimp rolls as an appetizers, OH MY GOSH they were perfect, warm, texture wasn’t strange, sweet and sour sauce to dip it in. We were beyond hungry so they tasted even better!
We ordered the avocado burger not only because everyone and their mom Unilocaled about it, our waitress recommend it. As promised it came with a massive amount of avocado — it’s like they have a never ending supply of avocados in the kitchen. We noticed almost every plate that came out of the kitchen had avocado or sweet potato fries on it! So we knew we made the right choice! The burger is HUGE, I recommend sharing it; especially if you got an appetizer! My friend ordered the black bean nachos; which also came with a generous serving of guacamole, sour cream, pico, onions and lots of cheese! Everything down to the chip had a unique flavor! They were delicious!
We had a giant box of leftovers! Loved this place!

Oh, Hobbit Café.
On one hand, the food here is really, really good. I ordered the self-​explanatory boudin burger, and it had one of my favorite foods (boudin) in another of my favorite foods (burger). The sweet potato fries are fried well, and Hobbit has generous portions — good value, in my opinion.
BUT. And HUGE buts (I wish I had one!). Service is incredibly lacking, the restaurant has a small bug problem (don’t sit near the windows…), and you get charged for every little substitution.
* Service: literally sat at our table for a solid 10 minutes before someone took our drink order (keep in mind we got here at 1:30, not exactly the lunch rush — I got seated immediately). When our server was taking care of us, she wasn’t the nicest either. I don’t expect kissing my ass, but a smile wouldn’t hurt.
* Bugs: WHY ARE THESE IN HERE. I’ve read previous reviews that the tables next to the windows have a problem with bugs, and I can confirm. They look like fruit flies to me, and the restaurant doesn’t seem particularly dirty, so… why?
* Charging for subs: I understand charging for avocado and up-​charging sweet potato fries, and I *suppose* I get why cheese is $ 1, but if you tout yourself as a vegetarian friendly restaurant, WHY do you have an upcharge to make certain dishes vegetarian? Makes absolute zero sense to me; it’s almost as if you’re penalizing vegetarians for their dietary choices.
* Also, super minor issue, but the restaurant literally has zero connection to The Hobbit except for a couple of posters on the wall and naming a couple of menu items after things in Tolkien’s series. The decorations aren’t really kitschy; they’re more tacky than anything.
Like I said, the food here is really good, but I’m in zero rush to come back here.

If you need some more convincing, then let me tell you how cool this place is.
This is one of those unique places that sets itself aside from the typical restaurant mold. It has a Lord of the Rings theme which is cool. (and if you laugh at that, remember you take pictures of food everywhere you go). Hobbit has a fun atmosphere with a very friendly staff.
You half expect to run into the characters from Big Theory here. The staff breaks the mold from the typical cute waitress who is «taking a break from college». The crew here is more like the kids you grew up watching Star Wars and playing Nintendo with.
The craft beer selection in this place is «precious». Huge selection with rare finds.
The food is great too. Its got a strong vegetarian menu for the «elven types» but plenty of meaty selections for men who swing swords. You cant go wrong.
Take a break from the ordinary, and give this place a try!

I’ve been here a few times over the years. Once, a few years ago, I ended up getting food poisoning. I went back today for the first time since, and the place seemed exactly how I remembered it: dirty, bad lighting, terrible food, high prices. Everything I’ve tried here has been horrid. Dust and dirt coat the walls. There was some sort of residue on the inside of all the cups.
I gave them an extra star for the nice waitstaff and the unique theme. My waitress today was very apologetic for my distaste for the food, promptly brought me a different dish at no extra cost, and continued to show concern for our satisfaction throughout the rest of our meal, making absolutely sure we had everything we needed (refills, to go boxes, etc). The theme is nice; it’s always refreshing to go to a restaurant with its own something special. However, nothing new has been added in years and years. There have been a couple minor changes, such as the fact that one of the dishes on the menu now has «Smaug» in its title, but that’s about it.
The whole place needs a deep cleaning, a menu rework, and an overall revitilization.
