This is my favorite place to Steak Night! For $ 12.99(after tax) you get a juicy delicious grilled steak(it seems like a ribeye around 12 – 14 ounces) a baked potato(with a topping bar) and a domestic draft! If you come in on a day where a local team is playing you may even get a Jell-O shot or two on the house! I LOVETHISPLACE!

Parking sucks! Their lot is super small, so you have to rely on street parking, but their steak nights on Tuesdays is brings us back. Their $ 12 special includes steak, baked potato(you load it yourself at the bar), and a beer. Although, the steak tastes like an ordinary steak, I always leave this place full and with lunch for the next day.

Went here for the Texas Tech bowl pregame happy hour. I’ve been here in the past, but only for Texas Tech football games, as it is the unofficial watch party. They have a great staff that is friendly, and takes care of everyone. I’ve always had at least one round of free Jell-O shots, and plenty of beverages. They have food here, and although I’ve never tried it, everyone seems to enjoy it.

I’ve only been here once, but it felt homey. A friend said that I wouldn’t like it because it’s divey, but I can hang at a normal bar LOL! The layout reminds me of Portland’s Cheerful Bullpen — elongated inside and open space in the back with a tree. There are two pool tables, tvs all over the place, and less than 10 tables inside. There’s lots of space outside. Outside, there’s usually three tvs when it’s not raining. I spoke with a couple of elderly women who seemed right at home, and it turned out they were the owners. They were friendly, we chatted, and they confirmed they can have a big screen projector if needed. The last time they had one outside was for the super bowl. I thanked them, sat with my friends, and the bartender came over. He gave us free jello shots! I thought that was a wonderful touch and a nice way to welcome me my first time! My bill was a little over $ 12 for two hard ciders and a little over $ 12 for one small bowl of guacamole and one small bowl of queso. Both were tasty. We were only provided one basket of chips, which were really good. Someone had taken the time to coat with extra oil and bake. I asked for a second basket of chips, and they were completely different. They had not been coated in oil and baked, so they were slightly stale. Even the guys could tell a difference. Nonetheless, I will probably be back. I could definitely see myself spending an entire day at this bar, having great conversation and good company!

We used to love this place. The nice waitresses that speak to you with respect. The juicy steaks on Tuesday. The TVs and packed ambiance. This wasn’t just a spot I like. This was one of the handful spots I would actually recommend to my friends. And now, sadly, the completely opposite. The usual effective waitresses is now replaced by a rude, hat backwards guy that talk to you as if you are pathetic. I asked about the price hike on the steaks and his response(verbatim), «Yeah, this is for promotion only for those people that want to come in and sit. Since all you are doing is ordering it to go, you are not really doing much to get that special.» Was he actually serious? And since I had to wait for my steak, I proceeded to watch him for the duration, and all I saw was a whole bunch of walking back and forth. Chit chat with customers. More walking. Other customers continue to wait. More customers continue to wait. Tragic. And finally, the price hike. Look, we all understand promos and such. And honestly, willing to pay for it if this was done correctly. But at least do the favor and inform your customers that this is now dine in only And whether it would be okay to have the original price if it’s to go. The problem is that this is a big change when you used to sell it at $ 12 and now it is $ 17. And at $ 17 a steak, you are pricing yourself higher than the likes of Texas Roadhouse and other convenient steak houses. So effectively, you gave away the final reason people would come in. Don’t get me wrong, the Steaks are good, but not $ 17 good. It’s no wonder why this used-to-be packed place is now more than half empty by 9pm.

The blonde girl with huge personality made my night. She was extremely friendly and fun. I would come back just to see her. PS the steak is pretty good.

My friend and I come here every Tuesday for their steak!!! It’s so damn good! Comes with beer and loaded potatoes. I will say that recently the rib eye has not been as flavored as it usually is. But it’s still a good deal for the price. Also, they charge you 19.99 if you’re taking the steak to go. We found this out on a slower noght. But that’s not a big deal. I would still recommend this place to people.

Griff’s is a great bar, but as it dates back to the 1960’s as «Houston’s Oldest(and Diviest) Sports Bar,» I think everyone knows that. Trivia night on Thursdays with Vern is legendary – easily the most enjoyable trivia night in Houston from the moment Vern attempts to say each and every hilariously inappropriate team name(with various degrees of success). The owners, who are possibly two of the nicest people you will ever meet, are also routinely there and chatting with regulars and newcomers alike. It’s a great place to go to watch Houston sports teams, particularly the Astros and Rockets. The place gets especially electric when home teams are in the playoffs. It’s a place with a bunch of character, and pulls off just the right level of divey-ness to go with it’s eclectic nature to make it wonderful. But Griff’s is also a great lunch destination as well. They have a rather large menu for a sports bar. Their veggie burger, perhaps accurately described on the menu as «real meat’s bastard cousin,» is easily one of the best bar/pub veggie burgers in town, even better(in my opinion at least) than the one at Christian’s Tailgate. They also recently started offering custom pizzas, which again are surprisingly delicious for pub grub. They also routinely have lunch specials during the week. The prices are beyond reasonable too, making this an obvious no-brainer for a lunch destination. Griff’s is great, but again you probably already know that. If you haven’t been, you owe it to yourself to check this Houston gem out!

What a great place to watch Texas Tech Games! They’re Tech alumni that love to root on football. Come in ready to root on the Red Raiders and enjoy some great food. I recommend the quesadillas. They are amazing! These guys are definitely rivals to another bar that shows Tech games. Wreck’Em Tech

This is the best place to come relax and have a good time… even if your solo, or even waiting on some friends to meet you up. The staff is friendly, the regulars are friendly and they all make you feel at home. The place is owned by the twins, and they are nice and huge sports fans. They pass out Jell-O shots during sporting events to only make your experience even better. The food bar far is some of the best, when it comes to bar grub. Mon — $ 1 tacos Tue — Steak night Wed — Pork chop night Thur– trivia night Fri — Karoke night Sat — «beer n shot» special Sun — $ 3 you call-it’s

Sketchy place to watch sports. I felt uncomfortable in this atmosphere, it seems to draw an older male crowd that doesn’t like to share the bar. My group left after a girl in our group was verbally harassed by a regular. Bad vibes here.

I love this place when it’s chill & uncrowded, when it’s what a trendy clubber would probably call«dead,» when I can talk to my beau at normal volume, and he can hear me, & we can converse with the bartender about the movie he’s showing on two of the fifteen screens. And I hate this place when there’s a DJ or, god forbid, f’in karaōke like last night. Gawd, the anguish of karaōke blasting at 140dBs! I left after one drink, couldn’t take the noise & drunken ridiculousness. Next time I won’t stay at all when they havethat nonsense going on. So, 4 stars when it’s chill & uncrowded 1 star when it’s loud with a bad DJ or, worse, effin karaōke. Average: 2.5 I’ll round up to 3 since more nights than not the place is a peaceful pub with no DJ or the jerk-parade of deafening karaōke going on.

I went here about four months ago and had an awful experience; this time was totally different. The wife and I wanted some crawfish and cold beer and we knew Griffs would deliver and they did. The crawfish were big for April and very well seasoned and the beer was cold. People were polite. They don’t have crawfish every weekend, but their facebook page stays pretty up-to-date Live music was nice. Some of the people around us found it a little loud, but it aloud me to enjoy my crawfish without the inconvenience of having to talk.

Griffs is a dive bar for sure. My friend met us there and said«this is every thing I imagine when I think dive bar… and I love it!» The food is decent enough. You can add a fried egg to anything, pizza included. The quesadilla was large and well flavored. The fries are also legit. It’s bar food, but well priced and tasty. It’s been pretty busy, but we were mostly here during trivia. It’s hard to judge the service accordingly, but they’ve been mostly friendly, though attentiveness has lacked some and last time the wait staff disappeared from out table at the end. Not a huge deal, we just closed out at the bar. Just don’t be too impatient, order in advance, and you’ll be good. They will make the shots into a drink for you. The roommate loves the orangey shot as a drink. The dublin mule(aka whiskey and gingerale) is decent enough too. Overall a great divey experience. Played cards against humanity(I brought with me), ate bar food, played trivia(3 dollars, 4 rounds, free nachos, free jello shots, lots of heckling, fun), and had a good night. The owners and regulars seem friendly, accommodating, and want everyone to have a good time!

Griff’s. My wonderful home away from home. We love this place and come several times a week. We were«new» to this neighborhood(me, not so much but my husband, yes) so we made a point to introduce ourselves around since we knew we would be coming here on the regular. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. If you’re a semi-decent person, you shouldn’t have any problem hanging out with the folks at Griff’s. If you aren’t into sports and you walk in expecting to play the music you like and get upset when they say no, that’s on you. If you like to judge people off of first appearances and are a little bit of a snob, you really shouldn’t be here. There really is nothing like Griffs, and it’s been around for 50 years. I am pretty sure that doesn’t happen by serving bad food and having unsavory patrons, as some of these other reviews have warned against. This is indeed, a neighborhood gem. Football, karaōke, trivia or just a game of cards with friends — this is the place to be. The owners are hilarious, the staff is awesome and the food is delicious — how do they get those fries so crispy? Great time, great food and never disappointed. Keep it up guys!

I’ve only come here for trivia and it’s always a blast. You can’t get a better deal for $ 3: trivia, DELICIOUS nacho bar, and a jello shot. The servers are a little inconsistent, but you can go to the bar for a drink if you can’t wait. If you like trivia, you should come here and arrive early. The place fills up quickly.

Griff’s for the win! My friends and I were looking for somewhere to do Trivia and fate brought us to Griff’s! Trivia is $ 3 on Thursdays for a few hours fun, it also includes a free Nacho Bar and Jello Shots! Sounds random, and it is but I love it! This is a hidden gem, so I’ll say no more because I’d like it to stay that way.

Griff’s was on Houstonia Magazines«Best Bars in Houston» list as a noteworthy sports bar. Then after diving into Unilocal reviews about Griff’s, I had to go. We went on a Sunday afternoon to watch the Texans game. I was a little confused as to where the entrance was located – it’s a door plastered with stickers that camouflauges itself into the wall which is also plastered with stickers. Alas, we made it in. The place was jam packed. I was a tad intimidated because it seemed like there was nowhere to sit and everyone was already deeply entrenched in watching the game. We ordered at the bar and a nice Texans clad old lady pointed out the spots that appeared to be our best bets for seating. There are tons of TVs. Yes, as plenty of other people have mentioned, there is a veritable layer of dust, but it’s not on like your eating surfaces or the chairs or anything. That said, I like my dives a little dusty, it adds character. My boyfriend ordered«Ass Burn» wings and I overheard at the next table that they had a BBQ pulled pork sandwich on special so I ordered that. The sandwich came with fries AND macaroni salad. The fries were sooooo good. The macaroni salad, not so much. But I don’t really care it’s not like I’m at a damn picnic or something. The guys at the table next to us(very clearly regulars) were talking Whiskey, and my boyfriend is in the service industry thus knows a lot about various spirits. So they started talking to him about this and that, whatever, and then they invited us to join their table. Then we come to learn that one of the guys at the table makes the wing sauces for the place, which was cool because my guy loved the wings. Our server was friendly and accommodating and it seemed like she and the bartender were a very good team. Another thing to note, free celebratory jello shots for every Texans touchdown. I will most definitely return to Griff’s.

I came back a week later for steak night and had a very different experience. For pork chop night the bar wasn’t very busy. For steak night it was busy. I had trouble finding a place to sit and finally had to accept sitting at one of their pool tables which had been converted into a roughshod dining table. I asked for my steak medium along with a baked tater. With the meal comes a draft beer. I picked coors light and was given a clear plastics cup that had about 8 ozs. In it. I guess I should have known that it would be a small beer. Anyway about 20 minutes later my steak arrived. It looked good but as I cut into it I realized that it was very rare. I usually order steaks medium because I am not picky and medium should mean that it will come out no more than medium well or medium rare. This one was kind of bloody. I would have sent it back but I was already peeved with the seating arrangements and I wanted to eat the food and leave. The steak wasn’t bad other than not being cooked anywhere near what I asked. The potato was ok. When my food arrived I moved to another table and during the entire time that I ate the food none of the waitresses came by to check on me or ask if I wanted something to drink. Of course I did because the little beer that came with the meal was consumed 25 minutes ago. Finally as I had about two bites of food left, the manager(I think) came by and noticed I had no beverage and asked if I wanted one. I said no because I wanted to leave. I then got my bill paid and left a 15 percent tip and headed for the door. I have to give this meal a 2 so I am going to average out the two visits to a 3. I know not to expect to much when you go to a bar for a meal like this. I doubt I will return and if I do it will be for the pork chops.

This part of Houston is running out of great little dive bars like Griff’s. Midtown fru fru clubs and mixology places are taking over the Montrose! But Griff’s is still here in all it’s cluttered, wall stickered, sports on TV, cheap beer, regulars at the bar, uneven floor, classic rock on the jukebox glory! Smoking allowed on the patio out front, Your basic bar grub served all day and all night. Wings, nachos, big ol’ burgers, even a veggie burger, chicken tenders and your basic salads. It ain’t bad food. But remember a few cold beers and a shot of Jameson will make it better! Happy hour Monday through Fri from 3 to 7. $ 2 beers or $ 1 off your imports or call liquor. Parking can be iffy. Park only on the South side of the bar in the lot or on the street. If you are looking for some fancy cocktail made with 100 different ingredients and a $ 15 price tag go to Midtown or one of the new bars that have taken over the Montrose. if you want a beer and a shot and some interesting people to start a conversation with — come here! This middle aged gal likes that the music on the jukebox never got too loud to chat and the bathroom was clean and bright.
