FLOSS Dental – West University

This was my first time here since I recently moved to Houston and have been looking for a new dentist after going to a small practice in my home town for most of my life. The dentist, Dr. Alfi, was fine. I filled her in on my previous dental care and conditions, and she seemed to make recommendations in line with my previous dentist and was knowledgeable and helpful.
Overall, the service was a bit impersonal and the assistants were not very professional. The waiting room was very clean and comfortable, but the actual dental rooms were cheap looking and there were no doors, so I could clearly hear other patients in adjacent rooms, which I did not like. Dr. Alfi did the majority of my cleaning after doing my consultation right off the bat, and the hygienist did the last portion of my cleaning (just the polish, floss and fluoride). I’m so glad Dr. Alfi did almost all of the cleaning, since the hygienist was not very good. She made a mess, splashing water and polish everywhere, getting it all over my neck and face, and was clearly rushing. The fluoride was brushed on, which my previous dentist stopped using years ago in favor of more convenient and just as effective fluoride options. The fluoride left my teeth feeling and looking tacky for hours and slightly burned my gums when sloppily applied. Couldn’t even enjoy the fresh out of the dentist clean feeling.
My experience with Dr. Alfi was fine, but my experience with the hygienist and assistants made me not want to come back.

I made a dental appointment for me and my husband back in August (whoops — I am super late with this one) to get our teeth nice and sparkly clean for our wedding.
At every other dentist I have been to in my life, a technician/​dental assistant does the cleaning and then the dentist comes over, pokes around and schmoozes you for a few minutes asking you questions you can’t answer because your mouth is stuck open, and then you’re done. Here, the dentist did the cleaning herself and since we both there at the same time, she just went back and forth from room to room.
So basically the receptionist scheduled us both at the same time, but we would have been much better off scheduling them separately so that it took each of us 1 hour. Instead, we were both there for 2 hours.
Dr. Alfi is very nice though and she did a good job cleaning. (My measurement of good is not too much poking with sharp objects.) My teeth did feel sparkly clean afterwards.
When I went back a few days later to pick up our trays, there was no one there even though they were supposed to be open. The second time I came back the door was unlocked but there didn’t appear to be anyone there. I rang the bell and called out several times. I waited about 10 minutes for the receptionist to come back — she had been out getting a snack. Not very professional…
It was easy to get an appointment so if you are looking for something last minute this is probably a good bet.
Also, they do a fluoride rinse which a) I haven’t had since I was a kid and b) my insurance did not cover. Check your dental insurance and you can decline if it’s not covered.
