Description

History

Established in 2009.

The City of Houston Building Materials Reuse Warehouse officially opened on June 23rd, 2009.

The Reuse Warehouse was opened in response to a 2004 – 2005 Houston Galveston Area Council study which revealed that 38% of the materials that were entering the area’s waste streams were construction and demolition related materials, many of which could be diverted and reused.

The Reuse Warehouse is intended to provide a place for builders, remodelers and the public to bring materials that are in good, reusable condition but might otherwise be thrown into the landfills due to a lack of storage space.

The initial funding for the project was provided by a $ 150,000 HGAC/TCEQ grant, with the City of Houston also contributing additional funds.

The project developed out of the Mayor’s Office of Environmental Programming, under the project leadership of Sarah Mason, a senior environmental analyst, and is currently part of the City’s Solid Waste Management Department.
