WWII Red Light District Tour

Carter has so much energy and enthusiasm as she tells the story of Chinatown’s «Red Light» district. She is funny, knowledgeable and seems to thrive on learning as much as she can about this period in Hawaii’s «brothel» history. She continues to grow her tour business by researching, interviewing and sharing the stories told to her. She had me so excited about learning more, I came home and did more research. I found various articles to read as well as more old photographs. I had previously read the book «Honolulu» by Alan Brenner which gave me some insight.

The tour was amazing… we did the devils den tour about the bubonic plague and leper colonies etc. Carter was very knowledgeable and the places she took us were very interesting and off the beaten path of touristy Waikiki where we were staying. Five stars

I have been looking for walking tours in Honolulu for awhile, and found Carter’s through a Google search. I took my girlfriend on a Saturday morning and it was worth every penny! Carter puts a lot of effort into historical research and gives a really great tour. She was friendly, funny and very informative. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who has even a slight interest in history. It will give Chinatown a whole new face. I can’t recommend this tour enough!

This was an awesome tour– my family and I did this tour on the second day of our vacation; it was a fun way of getting a piece of history here. You can also get nice lunch around Chinatown after the tour (begins at 930, ends around 11– perfect time to grab lunch before everyone else come out for lunch). Currently they have a groupon deal going, so make sure you check it out– it’s a great deal.

This tour was really fun and informational. The guide has a good sense of humor highly recommend!

Loved the tour! Happy to say that Carter not only knows the history of the area, but she is actively learning about it through research and by interviewing locals who either grew up around the brothels or had family that told stories.
It’s clear that Carter knows what she’s talking about and is excited to share as much with her guests as possible.
Do be aware that Chinatown is still sketchy after all these years. To me, no worse than parts of LA or NYC, but still worth noting. When my BF and I had our tour, two bums in front of us got into a physical altercation. On the flip side, there are trendy restaurants and a few cool shops in the area, along with 100 year old wet markets that appear to only attract locals.

Our tour was wonderful! She was funny and her information on the tour was information she found herself! It was amazing and I totally recommend taking her tour ! If you have the time this is definitely a tour to take !

A raw history lesson that opens your eyes to the hidden past of China town. The WW2 walking tour does a great job of packing in a lot of information into a fraction of China town with out burning out your legs. If walls could talk they would sound like Carter.

Fantastic and fun tour of Honolulu’s Chinatown during WWII. Carter is extremely knowledgeable and super funny! I loved learning the history of places I walk by whenever I am in Chinatown. This tour is great if you are visiting, as well as if you are a local. Learn the history no one really talks about and have a great time doing it.

Recently, four of us took the Honolulu and Chinatown Tour (WWII Red Light District. Cater was lively, fun and entertaining. She is a great storyteller and fully researched her tour. All of us in our group were very impressed. Two out of the four were retired Tour Management Directors… so that says a great deal. It was a real treat for me, as I was visiting from Maui!

Fantastic tour, especially for a born-​and-​raised Hawaii couple to learn more about this part of the island. The guides were highly entertaining and the tour was well-​timed and well-​organized. Definitely recommended!

My wife and I really enjoyed this walking tour. It is unlike any other. We’ve lived here for years and didn’t know most of this stuff. Carter had a ton of great stories. We highly recommend this for both locals and visitors.

I grew up in Honolulu and have never done a tour like this, but the history of downtown has always interested me (I went to college and worked downtown for several years but never knew that much about the area). When the Groupon came up for this a second time I decided to give it a try.
I emailed the address from their website to see about scheduling a tour for the following Sunday morning. Carter wrote back right away and confirmed us. My BF and I ended up being the only ones on the tour that day. I really appreciated that she didn’t reschedule us to another with more people. Having a private tour was really cool. Great customer service! =)

Carter is such a good storyteller! She’s obviously done a lot of research about the area and her passion for history (and it’s sordid underbelly!) really shines.
Regular history can be very interesting, but hearing all about downtown’s «dirty» past is truly fascinating. I LOVE that so many of the buildings from her stories are still standing (and even some signs!). Carter’s tour had a good pace and I enjoyed that she occasionally pulled out old photos from the days of her stories. There was a good balance of storytelling, jokes, facts, and even some direct quotes from people who lived then.
I’d highly recommend this for locals and visitors.

Carter was a breath of fresh air, especially with narrative that included some «fresh» and funny phrases! This was an eye opening looking into the smarmy side of old Honolulu that took place in China Town. Well worth your time and as you walk around you can check out the upgrades to China town. Please check this out and make sure Carter is the guide for the tour!!!

5 stars — A must do tour! Everyone in our group had a great time getting away from the über touristy Waikiki and walking around downtown Honolulu. So many fun stories, so many funny jokes, we ended up quoting this tour the rest of the trip.
Do yourself a favor get of the tourist traps, learn laugh and check out downtown Hoholulu.
PS Carter was a blast (make sure you ask for her).

This was an excellent tour. Highly educational, excellently presented, wonderful ratio of tour guide to tourist, and a lot of hands on sites and sounds. While being an elementary school teacher, I wouldn’t recommend this tour for young children, but I would highly recommend it for adults due to it’s thorough historical documentation and substance. Would definitely go again. Carter is an amazing tour guide.

This tour is a must do while you are in Honolulu! I had no idea the seedy history that occurred here up through the 1960’s! I was worried transportation from Waikiki was not included, however the bus routes provided were super simple to navigate and only cost us $ 2.50. Definitely worth taking the bus for this tour. Our tour guide, carter, was amazing too! She owns the company and puts on a very entertaining show!

Absolutely loved it! If you have any interest in history or events of the past, Ms. Carter does an exceptional job of bringing China Town’s history to life. It is readily apparent that she has extensively researched the area’s scandalous history and brings it to life with her own witty humor and charm. She comes well prepared with mini speaker if needed, hand waving fans for walkers, and even a tablet to share some historic photos and a few notable quotes from her research. The historic walk was both informative and entertaining, I learned a lot and look forward to doing it again on my next visit to Hawaii.

This was a fun tour of downtown Honolulu and Chinatown. Carter had a ton of energy and you could tell she and Clinton did a bunch of research to discover the interesting past of what really happened outside of Waikiki. This was no dull tour with a guide just yakking off facts. Carter has the vigor and wit to keep you entertained while learning about our unknown past. Tourist and locals alike will have a blast. The experience is clever, entertaining and enjoyable. The walking tour is like nothing you’ve done before. You’ll love it.
