Wing Shave Ice & Ice Cream

They were out of the incredible waffle cone when we went yesterday, but once I had my amazing blueberry lavender ice cream I was all good! I don’t know that I’ve ever had ice cream with flavors as true and fresh as they are here at Wing Shave Ice & Ice Cream!
Side note — street parking on Sundays is the best.

The ice cream here is unlike anything I’ve ever tasted. The FLAVORS are what makes the place legit. Original, creative and always leaves the palate in a craze.
I got the mayan chocolate which consisted of cocoa, cinnamon and cayenne. Winnaaaz.

Love their homemade ice cream that’s made without any refined sugar. Very unique selections of flavors available. I had the Kinako which is made from soy bean powder. Loved it. A nice balance of soy bean and creamery. Just the right amount of sweetness. My gf had the Green Tea and Oreo Cookies. Also
Loved it. It’s green tea ice cream with little chunks of Orio cookies imbedded. A nice blend of soft and crunchy textures.
They also have Non Dairy-​Vegan flavors.
This place is located near the corner of Pauahi and Maunakea St. Metered parking is available on Pauahi St but you can also park in the Maunakea or Bethel St municipal parking.
We will definitely save room for ice cream the next time in Chinatown having lunch or shopping.

I tried the kinako ice cream, made with coconut milk (instead of cow’s milk). I love the creativity of using kinako as a flavor, although it was a bit difficult to taste it with the strong flavor of coconut. I’d like to come back and try more flavors. My friend got avocado ice cream and let me try some; neither of us cared for it.

We just went there 2 days in a row! My favorite is The Continental which is hazel nut, almond and chocolate. My kids liked s’more. My Husband liked Samurai which is matcha, strawberry and chocolate. The Best part is the have many flavors that has no refined sugar in them. They also have sorbet. Next time, I am trying Lihing mui Mango.
I wish the place has a nicer chairs to sit. Also the staff is not very friendly. But ice cream is good! I like this place better than Il Gelato in Kaimuki.

Had the Tea & Cookies (?) I think? I believe it was Earl Grey ice cream with chunks of cookie inside. Very delicious and refreshing on a hot Chinatown day.
Do be weary of the odd hours but you’ll be surprised by the flavors of ice cream available.

The ever-​changing menu means there’s always something new. See something you fancy? Try it now, because it might not be there tomorrow (seriously, sometimes a batch sells out in a day!).

I’ve lived near Chinatown for over a decade and I don’t know when this place opened but I just found out about it. I wish I’d learned of the place sooner!
There were a bunch of flavors I’d never heard of before, but all sounded equally delicious. After trying a flavor or two, I decided on a scoop of Coco Monkey (a mix of coconut, chocolate, and banana). Tasty!
The place isn’t very large but it was comfortable for my friend and I, who spent time chatting and chilling on the couch and on the stools at the counter. There was also free water available, much appreciated as it was a hot day.
8/​10, would recommend!

Wing Ice Cream and Shave Ice is a whole in the wall you want to find and get lost in.
Homemade ice creams with so much variety in favor profiles. He takes ordinary flavors and spices them up; literally in some cases (Mayan Xocolati — chocolate, cinnamon and cayenne). Also tried the Kabocha Crunch and that was amazing; if you like Kabocha then this is a winner worth going for.
Prices are very reasonable for homemade ice cream. For one single scoop, which is a helpful serving more like 2.5÷3 scoops, and a double scoop came out just under $ 10. Go to another nearby ice cream parlor and it’s right on par.
There are a few seats inside along with a plush leather couch for a couple or trio. Dig the local artists that are featured on the walls. By the way he mentioned new stickers will be coming in soon for purchase; going back for the cool logo he commissioned a friend to do for his business.
Parking is the issue, though there are tons of street, lots, and garages to park at nearby. Support the local community and go eat at the restaurants, grab a snack from the various snack shops, or go to the market.

Overall 4.5÷5 for ice cream. Now my favorite spot for ice cream in town. Definitely rivals my other favorite in Haleiwa l.

Wings is my new favorite place for ice cream. They have the most original, true-​to flavors. And they always have new flavors. Some of their flavors include Mayan chocolate, lemon Thai basil, matcha fudge with strawberry vanilla, Nutella bella, avocado, li hing mango… Just to name a few. You can ask to sample the flavors prior
to making a commitment.
Also, get the sprinkle cone. It’s basically a regular waffle cone with sprinkles in the cone itself. It is amazingly crunchy and delicious. Love Wings!

I have tried three times looking for this small ice cream/​shave ice shop. The directions on Unilocal had me circle Chinatown numerous of times. I felt like a headless chicken lol. Thankfully, someone told me I had to walk all the way down maunakea street across from pauahi street. My eyes scanned for the wing sign, and hooray I found it!
I walked in excitedly ready to order green tea Oreo ice cream. I said hello to the man at the counter with a smile. It was not reciprocated lol Instead, I received more of a stone face. Ummm ok… I looked at the flavors offered on the blackboard, and there was no green tea. Gosh, I don’t have the luck of going on the day they make it.
I asked for a sample of cookie butter, and he just looked at me. I wasn’t going to order a flavor without tasting it. He then gave me the sample, and I immediately decided that was it! I ordered it on a sugar cone, and I watched him pack it in generously for one scoop:)
The cookie butter made me feel like it was Christmas. The cookie had flavors of pure butter, some gingerbread I think, and sugar. The cream was thick, and it tasted homemade not factory produced. I love local businesses like this. Such quality comes out in their products. I’ll be back to see if it’ll be my green tea Oreo day, and have it over their house made waffle cone…

Several of my friends have been raving about Wing Ice Cream, and I finally got the chance to check out this one-​man-​show ice cream spot a few weeks ago after dinner.
I’m always in the mood for ice cream, no matter how hot or cold it may be … but I wasn’t expecting Wing to be sold out of most of their flavors by the time my friend and I got there! It wasn’t even that late; I think it was around 8:45 p.m. by the time we found parking and walked to Wing for dessert.
I’ve heard that the flavors change daily and it really depends on what the Wing owner feels like making. Unfortunately, the flavor I really wanted the try – the «Pretzident” – wasn’t available at this time. In fact, I think only five or six flavors were left for the night. But, my friend and I still enjoyed what we got.
This shop is really small, with limited seating. Thankfully, there were only two other couples in there so my friend and I could sit on the stools and enjoy our ice cream immediately. I liked the cool, creamy consistency of Wing’s products; it didn’t melt too quickly for me to enjoy the flavors.
I’ll have to revisit this shop another time to try their peanut butter flavor, as well as the «Pretzident» one. But let’s just say I had a good first taste of Wing and will be back for more … at an earlier time so the pickings aren’t as slim.
«Salted Caramel»: I don’t normally get a double scoop of ice cream, but in this case I did because I wanted to try more than one flavor. And though the waffle cones looked tempting (there’s even a rainbow one) at Wing, I played it safe and kept to my usual ice cream in a cup. «Salted Caramel» can sometimes be hit or miss – I’ve encountered some that were way too salty – but this one was right on point. It featured a nice blend of sweetness with a hint of salt. I really enjoyed it and the caramel flavor wasn’t too strong for my liking, either. Definitely would get this one again if it’s on the menu.
«Caramel Latte»: I loved this flavor because I could aptly taste the coffee in it. It really did taste like a chilled caramel latte. Getting this flavor to balance out the «Salted Caramel» was a good choice because this flavor was slightly sweeter; I could definitely tell the difference between the two. I think I liked this one more than the «Salted Caramel» just because it was a little sweeter and I liked the coffee taste, but I was glad I got the double scoop so I could enjoy the best of both worlds. Definitely worth the calories for this one. I also loved the fact that the ice cream exuded creaminess and good quality. Didn’t taste like anything storebought and you can tell it’s handmade.

[Location & Parking]
This is a hidden gem in Chinatown. The pin on Unilocal was incorrect and I ended up walking around the block 15 mins trying to find this shop. The best way to find this shop is to use google. The store is near the intersection of Maunakea and N. Puahi St. but the entrance is on N. Puahi St.
Because it’s chinatown, there’s not really any parking. Your options are street parking or private parking lot. I usually come around 5:30pm, right when street parking becomes available and am able to find parking.

Like other Unilocalers, I do have to say the workers weren’t really welcoming and friendly. However, the service was really quick.
[Food]
The ice cream is delicious and unique. Their flavors are so diverse and different, you’re almost scared to try because it doesn’t sound good but trust me, it’s really good.
The flavors I’ve tried are:
Coco Tiger — A mixture of mango and ginger. The taste of ginger overpowers the mango but it had a nice burn sensation going down.
Lemongrass Cilantro — Think of creamy and cilantro. There are actual leaves of cilantro and it brings a nice kick to the ice cream.

If parking wasn’t an issue, I’d be here everyday. I can forsake the service because their ice cream is so delicious. The flavors are so unique and different than other ice cream shops. Follow them on instagram and facebook for the latest updates on their closures and unique flavors.

VEGAN ICE CREAM??? Never knew it could taste soooooo good until going to Wing. Never even knew this hole in the wall existed until a few of my friends stopped by during a night out. I didn’t have cash at the time, so I came back later and was not disappointed.
So how is their ice cream vegan? They use coconut milk instead of regular milk. Their flavors change regularly, but got to try some interesting flavors while I was there.
I got the lemongrass cilantro. Yeah it sounds weird, but it actually works. It tasted amazing. It wasn’t vanilla ice cream with some cilantro and lemongrass flavor. It tasted more like lemongrass ice cream with cilantro flavoring. There was even bits of (i think) cilantro in the ice cream. Very strong tasting and I loved every bite.
My only (small) beef with the place is well, the location. Downtown parking can be rough, but worth it once you can find it (or use public transportation). Not worth dinging them for as it’s not really their fault.

It is RARE to find ice cream places that offer vegan flavors made with non-​dairy milk. I wish they made it with soy instead because I do not like the taste of coconut. This place makes their non-​dairy flavors with coconut milk but I sampled the flavors and they were really good! I’d go here everyday if I could!!!

After joining some Yeeps for dim sum yesterday, we came to check out Wing, which was around the corner. Yay, it was open this time. I finally got to taste the ice cream. The owner of the place is Miller. He actually is very fluent in Cantonese, to my surprise. He was very nice and smiled often. We asked to sample a few of his flavors, which he obliged.
I sampled the cocomonkey, which wasn’t bad. It was a mix of coconut, chocolate and banana. I ended up getting the green tea oreo. I liked it. It was a rich green tea flavor, a little on the sweeter side because of the oreo. Nadine ended up getting the shave ice. She said that it was really good and that the ice was really fine.

Wing’s is a little hole in the wall ice cream place located in Chinatown (next to Super Phở). I was a little iffy about this place before due to the owner’s attitude but the ice cream is pretty damn good. It’s homemade and they come up with unique flavors such as hurricane popcorn and banana bread (taste just like it!). I also love the non dairy vegan options. Taste as good as regular ice cream!

Atmosphere: On our way looking for Wing’s we walked past it without noticing. It is a small store with a couch and some bar stools. He plays music on his record player.
Service: Wing is very approachable and well knowledgeable about his selection of ice cream. Full of suggestions.
Ice Cream: wide and unique selection of ice creams, sorbets and shakes. I tried the horchata, matcha strawberry.
Intangibles: Will definitely come here again, I was inspired to make my own small batch of ice cream after coming here. Made some strawberry basil, its harder than you’d think.

Today I spent most of my day thinking of what to eat. I actually ended up skipping breakfast and lunch mainly because I just didn’t know what to eat. That’s usually never a problem with me but today it was.
So here I am, a starving mother of 5 who just spent majority of her afternoon chauffeuring kids here, kids there,… Then the husband calls and says he’s done work. Great! I now had a helping hand.
First we go to a late lunch, early dinner at a nearby restaurant and although the food was good enough to make me feel content, my taste buds was still not satisfied.
As we drove towards Chinatown, my brother posted a picture of Kulolo and I was reminded of Wing’s Ice Cream. I have been here a couple of times before but this was about a year ago. Homemade ice cream in flavors one can’t even make up in their sleep! Pretz-​i-​dent? Well that’s ice cream with pretzels with peanut butter and chocolate! How awesome is that?!
Well Horchata has been my favorite; yes it actually taste like horchata! But today I was on a mission to taste their new Kulolo Ice Cream. And although earlier in the day I was unsure of what I wanted, there was no doubting today’s choice for dessert.
This ice cream shop is located in Chinatown! Yes Chinatown. And they open til late. So if you go at night, and you know Vin Diesel or the Rock, it’ll probably be best to give them a call and have them go with you. Haha. Nah it’s not that bad. I just wanted to mention them.
Ok where was I? Aaaah yes. In Chinatown. On North Pauahi off of Maunakea street. Good luck with street parking but in the two times I came (at night), I had no problem finding one right in front of the ice cream shop.
This shop is really cute. Like a mom and pop ice cream shop. So don’t expect checkerboard floors with freezer showcases of 31 or more flavors ;) All their ice cream is in deep freezers and in plastic containers. Why? Because their ice cream here is homemade! Yes they make it themselves. What kind of flavors? I can’t even begin to tell you because all their flavors are unique and they change daily. Best to call and ask or just come in and visit. They offer you taste tests up to 3 flavors.
Ok so back to my Kulolo! Today they had a special! Homemade Kulolo Ice Cream on Pa’i’ai. (whaaat?!’) Pa’i’ai! (Whaaaat?!). Pa’i… (Yah yah I know what you said, what is it?). It’s Taro. Fresh pound taro. Yes indeed I was sold.
I am no Hawaiian but one bite and I uwehe, ami, and slided all the way back to my car. Dat buggah was ono! It came with a hefty price of $ 8 but go to a local market to buy a quarter pound of just Kulolo and you’ll be paying about $ 12!
After this experience I think it’s safe to say my tastebuds are finally satisfied. Happy PHATgirl status indeed!

I was so excited to try this über-​popular ice cream spot that I made a special trip about a month ago, and again recently…& I’m so glad I did! On my first visit, I was really impressed by the accuracy of the Hurricane Popcorn flavor (it was uncanny it tell you!!), but I couldn’t imagine eating an entire scoop of it, so I opted for the pandan flavor instead. It was a little on the icy-​side for me – actually broke off in chunks when you dug into it with the spoon– almost like a less-​intense sorbet. Honestly, the consistency really worked for that particular flavor, kinda light & refreshing… but I just prefer my ice cream to be super creamy & «butterfatty»…I mean, if we’re gonna be naughty, might as well go all the way! ;D Hehe.
After seeing all of the rave reviews, I didn’t want to give a 3-​star rating without trying it at least twice…& it’s a good thing bc I had a much better experience my 2^nd time! ((Oh yeah, forgot to mention that that first time I went, the guy working there – whom I now realize is the owner – really didn’t talk much, & didn’t come off as particularly friendly or helpful, which was a big downer. He was playing/​texting on his phone for like 10 secs after I entered the tiny shop… I kinda felt like it was a bother to stand up & come help me.))
Today the service was way better! ;-) The guy put away his phone & came to the counter as soon as I walked in, talked story a bit when I asked questions, and generally seemed way less sullen than my first experience. I went all out this time, & got 2 scoops of ice cream, hehe: coconut crunch (smooth haupia ice cream with hazelnut toffee bits) & cherry pop (vanilla with cherries & cola fudge swirl)…and they were both sooo good! :-D Still not QUITE as creamy as I’d hoped, but it was very nice, and I’d definitely recommend both. The hazelnut toffee bits were a tiny bit burnt (not much), but I loved it anyway bc it was broken into good-​sized chunks & clearly homemade.
The décor is fine, with a small couch & some stools… nothing super exciting, but this is really more of a walking district anyway, so I doubt many people actually sit & eat in the shop. For anyone else that had a disappointing first experience, I’d suggest you give this place another chance, & go out of your way to engage the owner in conversation… he’s actually kinda nice, but maybe just shy/​quiet? Next time I really want to get the Incredible Hulk «supergreen» sorbet (spinach, kale, seaweed/​spirulina, mango, pineapple & something else – maybe coconut?) which I also sampled on my last visit… it was soooo good!
