Troy was very helpful and attentive in regards to my progression in learning to surf as well as my safety in the water. He is laid back and allows beginners to go at their own pace while remaining attentive and ready to help if anything unexpected should happen. He also knows the break very well and can make sure that you are catching a wave that is appropriate for your skill level and if you aren’t quite going fast enough he’ll give you a small push so that you can get into it. Unlike some other instructors that seem content to just push you the whole time, he also gives you pointers and technical tips so that by the end of the lesson you can start to catch waves completely on your own. If there are multiple people in the lesson of differing experience levels, he also does a very good job of accommodating everyone by taking more experienced people to larger breaks while keeping an eye on beginners who might get into trouble on the reef. His knowledge of the break however makes having any run ins with reef rash dry unlikely. All in all, he’s a fun, relatable guy who is a blast to surf with, knows a lot about the sport, and is also very attentive to his customers safety.

Troy is the best! He’s knowledgeable, patient and enthusiastic as an instructor.
As a beginner surfer my paddling isn’t strong yet. Troy makes it easy by towing you out behind him so you don’t have to paddle as much and can save your strength for paddling into waves. Once you’re out there he helps you choose which waves to paddle for and even pushes you into them if you aren’t moving fast enough. This practically guarantees you catch a wave.
I had a great time, caught a few waves and enjoyed the time in between sets «talking story» with Troy.

Me and my wife were recently on vacation on Oahu and decided to book the family a surf lesson. There were so many companies to choose from but our server at Dukes recommended we book with Vip Surf & Tours Hawaii. Soooo glad we took the advice!!! We were fortunate enough to get the owner and operator Troy as our instructor which I thought was quite impressive in this day and age. The kids, Matt 7 and Christine 5 both had a blast with Troy and were able to stand on their very first lesson (which totally made their day and ours!).
We were so impressed with the experience that we ended up booking a two day Vip tour to the North Shore two days later. It was great seeing the island with Troy as he was born and raised on Oahu and shared all sorts of funny little stories and facts about the island. Also everywhere we went the locals would stop by to «talk story» with Troy and treated us just like Ohana. It was definitely a surfing experience that surpassed our expectations. We highly recommend Vip Surf & Tours Hawaii, and will definitely be back on our next vacation!
