Monique is awesome! Super sweet and very knowledgeable and passionate about hair. So just a back story on my hair, I had done a digital perm 3 months ago and although I loved the perm, it had done a number on my hair. It was dry and damaged at the ends. I spent hundreds of dollars on products to bring it back to life but nothing helped. I knew what I had to do which was to cut off all the dead ends but I needed a hair stylist that was very knowledgeable on how to deal with digital permed hair. I’m so glad I found Monique on Unilocal.I basically left my hair in her hands. She analyzed my hair and recommended a hair cut that addressed my wants and concerns. End result? She did a wonderful job with cut, style and most importantly, she brought life and health back into it which was my number one concern. She also taught me how to style and use the products which btw made my hair feeling so luxurious. You may have to wait to get an appt with her as she is booked but she is well worth the wait.

I wish I could say the same about the services I received from Monique. I have baby fine, naturally curly, Caucasian hair. If you cut an inch it’s like taking 3. I have always had trouble finding someone who truly knows about my hair type. After extensive research, I thought I found it with Monique. She is very knowledgeable & had some great techniques, however, after 6 months I STILL can’t wear my hair down… took 3 months to wear it back without wearing 20 bobby pins. I have been really devastated with this haircut. When I asked to have it shaped up I didn’t mean hack into my side layers. Caveat: just be really specific when asking what you want… for those with my hair type just be aware…

If you’re wondering why Monique has all 5 stars… DUH! Because she is seriously THAT good!!! I was previously going to (2) other high end salons in town but I never got that «WOWWWWWW I feel like a million bucks» feeling after always spending well over $ 120 a cut. Needless to say, that got painful on my pockets after a while because the pockets ain’t juicy! Today was my very first time seeing Monique and she has me hooked. She’s real, she’s sincere, she asks you what YOU want, and she recommends what she thinks will work best based on what you’re looking for, your dedication level for styling your hair daily, and your lifestyle. The hour and a half that she spent on my hair flew by because she was cracking me up the entire time. My hair looks so much healthier, the layers are flowing, and I freaking love it!!! Can’t rave enough about her. It’s hard not to love her — she’s a super sweet and beautiful fireball! I’m ready to book my next appointment and so should you! THANK YOU LOVE — you’re the best!!! xo

Just got my hair did and as always happy with the results. She is the «mane» yoda, as far as I’m concerned. Monique gives you suggestions as to what will look good but never forces you to get a cut/​style that you’re not comfortable with. She cuts the style that was discussed, so if you said keep the length you won’t turn around at the end with a bob. Yes, it costs alot more than going to Super Cuts but her results are far much AWESOMER. She’s super chill and above all professional. She be a busy stylist, so I try to make my appointments at least 1 – 2 months ahead.

Monique is fantastic! She takes the time to hear what you want, but also guides you to the best possible look for your attributes. I totally have hair stylist trust issues as I have very curly hair and have been burned many times. After one cut, Monique has my full trust! She is definitely my new stylist! She gave me great color and cut my grown out style into something new, fun, and totally manageable. So far I can recommend her for color, short hair, and curly hair.

Monique is truly amazing! I can’t believe I waited so long to try her out. And now I can’t think of anyone else styling my hair! I thought I was doomed to never have a good hair day. She told me that there was nothing wrong with my hair. After years of stylists telling me that my hair was dry and dull. It just needed to be styled differently. She gave me a cut that is so versatile and very flattering. What I love about her is that she taught me little tricks for me to use while styling my hair at home. No one has ever taken the time to teach me how to style my hair, what products to use, how much to use and when to use them. I love that her salon space is just her. No assistants or other stylists. Just you and Monique. She didn’t try to make me buy products I didn’t need. And she is the first person in 10 years that gave me a new hairstyle! I’ve been to several high end salons on island. And Monique is way cheaper than anyone I’ve been to. She’s professional, warm hearted, fun, easy to get along with and best of all an incredible stylist. If you want a stylist who is passionate and extremely knowledgeable about hair see Monique! Make the time and see Monique! You will not be disappointed.

I thought I wrote a review about Monique previously, but I realized that I didn’t. Shame on me.
Hands down, Monique is THE BEST. I hope she never goes away because I don’t know what my hair would do without her.
Previously, I absolutely HATED getting my hair cut. I have very unruly, frizzy, thick, ridiculous hair and whenever I would get a haircut, I would be so nervous on how it would turn out, which is why I would get my hair trimmed once a year. if that. I would try to avoid the situation as much as I could. That is until I met Monique.
My mom and I have the same type of hair and she found Monique via Unilocal and decided that we should both go in together and try her out. As apprehensive as I initially was, I agreed and couldn’t be more happier with my decision.
We went in and each brought pictures of hair styles that we liked and Monique was able to let us know what would and wouldn’t work for us. We trusted her opinions and told her to do whatever she thought would work best for our face shape, hair texture, etc. Throughout the whole process, she not only worked her magic, but also educated us step by step and let us know what she was doing along the way and why she was doing it. In the end, I couldn’t be more happier with a haircut and now look forward to every time I see her again.
After seeing Monique a few times, I finally convinced my boyfriend that he needed to see her as well. My boyfriend suffers from thinning hair, mostly due to genetics and partially due to what his job entails (wearing a hard hat, stress, etc). He was on his last leg of hope and on the verge of just shaving his head, but before that I told him that he had to see Monique to at least give it one more try. THANK GOD HE AGREED. Again, Monique worked her magic and educated him on what was going on and what he could do to prevent future hair loss and also how to style his hair to make it less noticeable. I cannot thank Monique enough for giving him his confidence back. After his appointment, he told me, «I literally thought there was no hope left for my hair. but when I looked in the mirror, I couldn’t believe what she was able to do.» :) :) :)
The appointments are not cheap by any means, but neither is her work. She’s a GENIUS when it comes to hair and I cannot and will not complain.

Sorry for my late review! But I wanted to see how my hair grew out within after a month I cut it…
Normally my mom would step in and dictate my life but I’m a young lady now! I make my own decisions!!! :D

It’s still amazing after that fresh cut!
My hair length was to my butt and I am 5’5. I guess you can call it hula hair. I’m not very ‘girly’ but not a tomboy– not high maintenance I should say. Which made Monique’s cut and style even more amazing because I could make my hair look like I styled it even though I didn’t try to!
Her pricing is worth it and honestly not that expensive. She is one on one with you, shampoos and conditions, and styles all in that one price. — I think $ 85. So so so reasonable. And even if she raises the price, I would still go to her.
I’m so glad to have found a new stylist.

I have ethnic, curly, hair and Monique was a wonderful surprise! She understood my needs and offered great recommendations. I will definitely return. Well worth every penny!

I have been going to Monique since 2007. I found her shortly after moving to Hawaii and haven’t let anyone touch my hair since. When she moved to Heaven on Earth, I had no qualms about going with her.
She and I have done everything possible to my hair– lightened it, darkened it, high lights and low lights. Every time she exceeds my expectations with her skill. She always treats me as a dear friend and is professional in every aspect of her job. My hair is always beautiful and shiny and every time I get a compliment (and I get them a lot!) I tell them to go see Monique. Now that she is at a full service spa, you can pamper yourself with an entire day of beauty!

Thanks to Kelly H., I was referred to Monique for a long overdue haircut. My hair was damaged, sad, and in dire need of some medical attention. Like a world-​class doctor, Monique came in and brought my hair back to life! She even prescribed some potent drugs (Kerastase products) to keep my hair healthy and me happy for months to come.
Monique really knows hair. She knows how to cut it, how to style it, how to care for it, and better yet, how to ensure that you won’t mess it up in your time away. I had tried almost every hair trend (bangs, bobs, etc.), but I just wanted someone to TELL me what to do. Monique is incredibly knowledgeable and styled my hair in a way that suited my face shape and maintenance levels. Throughout the appointment, she continued to give me tips to keep my hair fresh and healthy. Monique is friendly, easy to talk to, and the master of all things hair — basically the trifecta of hair stylists! The prices can be a bit on the expensive side (my hair cut was about $ 80), but it is totally worth it! Trust me! It’s similar to drinking fine wine. You can’t settle for mediocre once you try the best — no matter the cost!

Get thee booty into her chair. You will not regret it.

Monique is a wonderful stylist and a great person! I am African-​American and have a lot of naturally curly hair. She tames it better than anyone else I have ever been to. It has to be a combination of her styling abilities and the products she uses. Both visits to her have left me extremely happy and my last visit was even better than the first! Monique gave me full highlights and a style, with a trim. She blow dried and flat ironed relatively quickly (and I have a lot of hair!) and left my hair straighter and softer and bouncier than I have ever felt it!
The shop itself is great! She usually plays music (to which she encourages you to sing to your hearts content if that is what you’re into) and provides some drink refreshments. The experience is wonderful! I appreciate her styling tips and conversation. Thank you Monique!!! You listened to me and knew exactly what I wanted with my color! Amazing results.

Monique is a talented hair dresser and she is super nice, polite, and personable. I came to her because of all the glorious Unilocal reviews. And you know what? I was very impressed with the amazing hair cut she gave me. She shared some good tips on how to manage my hair and recommended some good products that compliments my hair style and texture.
One thing though, she’s quite expensive. I went to her because someone mentioned that her prices were very reasonably but a $ 85 haircut was a bit above my price range.

Monique is a sexy shiny unicorn who will give you sexy shiny unicorn hair. You will be such a sexy shiny unicorn after she does your hair that you will attract sexier, shinier unicorns who will want to make shiny unicorn babies with you. Make the unicorn babies with your unicorn lover and then send them to Monique for an awesome haircut.
Okay, for the real review:
Monique’s hair cut she did on me 6 months earlier grew out beautifully and my hair still LOOKED amazing. However, since it was 6 months, I knew I was overdue to give my split ends the snip snip and the rest of my hair some loving. If I’m being honest, I really just wanted Mo to touch my head again.
She knew exactly what I wanted and was so fast. Her wash is the best thing you will ever feel. You honestly DO NOT KNOW how great your hair is going to come out or how great you are going to feel until after you’ve had a cut with her. Imagine if you had that perfect hair you always wanted– your hair will be better after Monique does it.
She is the best and she still charges less than the majority of the première salons. I’m moving in August, but NO ONE but Monique will touch my hair. I will simply have to find a way to book with her when I visit home.
Oh, she is also a philanthropist! She could be styling hair for celebrities or royalty, but instead she keeps her services local so the people of hawaii can look good. Someone hand over the nobel peace prize.
Appointments with Monique can take a few weeks or even a couple months to schedule, especially if you’re on a tight schedule too. Don’t give up! She’s worth it. Her magic hands will solve all your problems. Oh, and if she recommends kerastase and you gasp a little at the price, just buy the damn stuff! She is the all-​knowing Monique, don’t even question it!

Don’t know why I waited so long to review someone so important! I mean hair and eyebrows can make or break you, right?
I started going to Monique when she worked at J Salon. The vibe there was just not my cup o’ tea. Anyway, I followed Monique over to Heaven on Earth and really love her new space. It’s like her own little salon since she has a private space and we get to gab and talk about whatever the whole time she’s working her magic on my hair.
So down to biniss… Ms. Monique KNOWS hair. You can tell her exactly what you want and that’s exactly what you’ll get. BUUUUUUT, my advice is to just give her some general parameters, like you want to keep the length or you want bangs now, and just let her do her thing. I swear I prance out of the salon feeling like Miss Universe after Monique does my hair. She’s styled it with my natural curl, straight, loose curls… every look is always perfect.
So this isn’t really a complaint, but more of a testament to her ridiculous skills. I have been trying to grow my bangs out for a while, but I’ll usually have her trim them up so the ends look fresh. I swear, just a trim from her makes me want to keep them cause she always makes them look so cute, but it’s like Olivia from Jerseylicious said, «you just don’t marry bangs.» Also, for me, the ultimate test is how long a cut lasts. I know it’s gross but sometimes I won’t cut my hair for MONTHS and my cut from Monique still looks good. Her skills are just beyond, beyond… if that makes sense.
To all you chickadees with curly hair, you MUST let Monique work on your hair. It’s so hard to find someone who can cut curly hair because stylists in Hawaii seem to be so used to cutting straight, thick, Asian hair. I can’t tell you how many FOBy over-​layered fashion mullets I’ve had the displeasure of rocking becauase other stylist just don’t understand curly hair. Monique can look at you and know what will work for your face shape, hair type, etc, BUT she also listens to what you want and will flat out tell you if something is a no-​go.
I completely trust her with my hair, which is a pretty big deal. You also get tons beauty advice from her while she’s doing your hair… can’t tell you how many great tips, tricks, and recommendations I’ve received from her. One thing I’ve also noticed about her is that she is a perfectionist. She will not rush on my hair and takes the time to double and triple check everything to make sure I leave with perfect hair.
This is probably the only time I would urge someone to cheat… seriously, you must cheat on your regular stylist and let Monique work her magic on you — you won’t be disappointed. I also love that she is a business woman doing it all by herself.

Monique cut my hair because my stylist was out of town. I must say that I was more than pleased with the spa setting and the atmosphere. On top of that Monique gave me the exact cut that I desired without using a buzzer. Hats off to her for hand cutting my Okinawan hair with scissors.

I have to agree with all the reviews of Monique Son. Not only is she a gifted hair stylist, but also worked wonders on my unruly brows.
Being new to Hawaii, I put off finding a hair stylist until I was informed that I need to have my photo taken professionally for our company newsletter. I relied upon my fellow Unilocalers to guide me in the right direction.
You didn’t fail me. Monique is everything other Unilocalers have said… and more. Her personality is awesome and bubbly without being over the top.
I’ve found my hair stylist and look forward to seeing Monique for my color treatment in the next couple of months.

You know that amazingly hairgasmic feeling you experience after a great haircut??? Well after visiting Monique this is the feeling you will get and more!!! I first came to Monique when she was a hair stylist/​consultant at J Salon.
The first thing that surprised me the most and makes Monique stand out from any other hair stylist is that she is a hair STYLIST and a CONSULTANT!!! She has an eye for cutting hair. She will give you her advice on what she thinks will work for your personal face shape, hair texture, and style. This eye for styling and «what works» for the client is by far one of the most important aspects of a hair dresser to me because many times I do not know what I want, I just know I want something good! Monique is there to save the day!
The second thing that I really enjoyed about Monique is that she is SUPER friendly… but don’t get me wrong she is not that annoying hair stylist that wont stop talking about themselves. And as Sara H said, she is not that silent awkward hairstylist, she is Kool with a «K» and easy to talk to. =) Shout out to you Monique!!!
Third most obvious plus about going to Monique is that she is no crazy edward scizor hands, she
.cutt…hair, that is. She is probably the most precise hair dresser I have been to. She will even do touch-​ups after blowdrying your hair to make sure everything is «perfect». You may think OCD is a bad thing, but monique’s OCD is what i pay for =)=)
The last, most notable trait about Monique is that she will give you tips and tricks about hair that will rock your world!!! Just call her WikiMonique of Hair. I love this aspect of getting my hair done by Monique, she has a plethora of knowledge about hair and she aint afraid to share it =)
Location: Heaven on Earth downtown — Monique has the best location in Heaven on Earth as she has her own secluded room. This makes for a relaxing and intimate haircutt appointment with no distracting blowdryers, neighbor clients yapping off about their life problems, etc…
Price: Clarifying treatment ($ 30) — Totally worth it!!! & Hair cutt (around $ 70) — Again, MORE THAN TOTALLY WORTH IT
