UH Health Services

UH Health Services is what the name implies. You can come here when you’re sick or need to pick up health forms. They are currently under construction so the entrance is in the back. The waiting time varies with how many other patients there are. They are pretty good when you’re in a health pinch.

Went in today because of swelling in my lips due to canker sores on my lips. I was very uncomfortable and in pain. The nurse that checked me in and asked about my symptoms and what I had been doing to treat it was very nice, helpful and understanding. They’re required to ask you questions about drinking and smoking in the last month and well, I didn’t lie. Yes, I have had 3 drinks it one sitting over the last 2 weeks.
Then went to the room to wait for the doctor. The doctor bombarded in with no Hello or introduction, just started lecturing me about what I was doing to treat my sores was wrong. Immediately pulls out her prescription pad and writes a prescription without even looking at my mouth! I asked about the swelling and if it was normal and she said «You should be fine.» Not very reassuring. Then, before leaving the office she proceeds to lecture me about my drinking habits and that by having more than 2 drinks per night I’m more likely to get pregnant. Well last time I checked drinking doesn’t make you pregnant but okay Doc.
Left the office very annoyed and felt like they just wanted to get rid of me to get on to the next patient.
Next time I’ll just go to an urgent care facility that will take my insurance and listen to a patients needs without judgement.

I have nothing but positive reviews for our excellent little clinic on campus. Services are dirt cheap and the wait is never long. All testing and pharmacy services are done in-​house! Students, nurses, and Doctors are kind and efficient, visits have never lasted more than one hour. I stopped going to my PCP after my first visit and have only returned here since. It is literally a one-​stop-​shop back to health.

And again, I went a few days ago because I started coughing tremendously after my throat stopped hurting. Makes no sense yeah?
Took a stroll down to the Health Center and an accommodating young lady assisted me while another was assisting to another person. I was seated, and 2 minutes later, I was called in to get a check up, but this time, it was two young lady instead of one older lady. They’re nice and smiled and happy like the older one. After they did some small tests, they brought me to the bigger room for the doctor. I went there around 9:30. I was brought to the room by 9:41. I waited until 10:06. Exactly. The doctor was the same lady as before, and she was still nice and remembered my symptoms. After a few minutes, she gave me some prescriptions and i went to the pharmacy inside to get my medicine. They told me to wait a bit so they can fill the bottles. I waited about 5 minutes or so. Then they directed me to the cashier and the man there is always nice. I didn’t leave the health center until 10:30, but that was after I bought my medicine. Still good service to me.
Oh. They used to have condoms out on the desk where their pamphlets are so people would take them. But they stopped doing that. The restrooms had them too, but I didn’t check if they still have them inside now.

I’ve come here a lot for a variety of services. I don’t have a primary care physician (even though my father and stepfather are both doctors – haaaa!).
If you’re here to see a regular doctor, beware that you may have to wait a while to see them depending what time you go in the day. For regular check-​ups, it’s all walk-​in based. I’ve been seen as quickly as 15 minutes after the initial assessment. I’ve also waited as much as 40 minutes. It really just depends how busy it is that day.
Keep in mind that you will get your initial assessment and vitals done by students (specifically nursing students). After that you may see an actual registered nurse if you only need something like immunizations. If you need to see an actual doctor, you do so AFTER going through the nursing students.
The prices here are great if you are uninsured, and it’s rather convenient that there is a pharmacy located here as well.
I actually no longer have a set Obstetrician for those lovely annual women’s appointments, so I schedule appointments here at UH Health Services. It is simply the most convenient for me, since I’m at school Monday-​Friday. If you are getting a service from the women’s services or getting a physical exam, those are by appointment only (they do not take walk-​ins). They actually don’t have an actual obstetrician, every time I’ve gone, it’s been a Nurse Practitioner who does my exam. She’s GREAT and I’ve had no problems so I’ve been coming back to her, but if you were looking to see someone with an M.D. in Obstetrics, look elsewhere!

Because I shunned my regular doctor, I’m a regular at the health center at UHM. They have a range of services that meet most needs. I have student insurance with HMSA it’s guaranteed I don’t have to worry about the copay for visits. The copay for tests and medicine is cheap with the student insurance. The doctors here will not prescribe you antibiotics unless you really need them. Thumbs up for that.
The one thing I absolutely hate is that they have A LOT of student workers. They man the front and there are some students that does the basic assessment. Yes, the ones that do the assessment are probably future doctors in training but it’s super awkward telling someone my age and that I might run into around campus of what my symptoms are. *awkward turtle* Also, waiting for a doctor takes forever and a half. I seriously waited almost 40 minutes for a doctor once. Thank goodness that they are well stocked with magazines in some of the rooms!
Comparing to UNLV, UH’s health service center sucks. Regardless, it beats going my regular doctor and they always accept walk-​ins.
PS: they offer a parking pass for those using their clinic. the lot is in the back of the building. it really sucks because you park, walk around the building to get the pass, the walk back to your car to put the pass on your dash. vice versa to drop off the pass. pain in the tooshy.
