History

Established in 1989.

Surfboard and sailboard shaper Randy French founded Surftech in 1989. French developed a revolutionary way of building surfboards and offered his new technology to the best shapers on earth.

Initially French and a few friends drove up and down the California coast with a truckload of boards selling them out of the back of a truck. Back then our early headquarters were known as the «chicken coop» and were located in the back of a Santa Cruz lumber yard.

Surftech officially began when French built a prototype with a shape from Rusty Preisendorfer at French’s Oregon factory. These original boards remain the most sought after of all Surftech shaper’s sample boards. We soon began a partnership with a world class international factory that matched our commitment to excellence, providing unparalleled capabilities, strong environmental awareness and unmatched craftsmanship.

My first stand-​up paddle (SUP) rental with SurfTech was five years ago. I’ve used their service and boards several times since then, even for race events, and they NEVER disappoint.
Excellent, knowledgeable, friendly customer service. Quality, updated equipment. Respectful and understanding problem resolution (even though all those situations were my fault!). And, great location in town right near Ala Moana where I like to take beginners and casual SUPers looking for a fun workout. I highly, highly recommend them.

Best place to rent a board in Hawaii, hands down … If you have a car or car rental. layout can rent a board Saturday at 9am you can keep it until Monday at 5pm. That’s $ 10 a DAY –not per hour! And every dollar is a down payment towards a new board! These are pro boards from shapers like Takyama. Gerry Lopez, Al Merrick, and others. Boards are light and tough. They don’t ding easily.
Friendly people .Carl, Rance, Steve. and others. As I mentioned above. the only downside is you need a car to haul your rented board to the beach. But they sell car straps on site for only $ 25.
One concern I have about Surftech genera is that in the last 2 years. Some of the shapers like Lopez and Laird/​Pearson have moved to other brands or created their own. And eventually these good boards will disappear. But the still have Joe Bark.
Overall. Can’t be beat!

This place is pretty great for renting boards. The people are nice and friendly and will answer all your questions. They have a good deal on rentals, and they’re for 24 hours so you don’t have to return it the same day which is nice. They also have a good selection. I have come here to rent SUPs every time I have friends visiting. The cool thing is that if you keep your receipts for rentals, they let you apply it toward buying a new board (with no limit). So if you rent enough boards, you can buy one for free. Pretty killer.
The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because they recently raised their price. They used to be $ 30/​day for SUP rentals which I though was reasonable. Now it is $ 40/​day which gets pretty expensive when you rent more than one.

Straight from the top these guys are amazing! They have a very clean store, more than reasonable prices and a very friendly staff. Bobby and his crew have helped me pick up a paddle for my paddle board in no time. They gave me the pros and cons of every paddle. The best thing of Bobby was that he is very genuine about his products and pointed to me, that the new model was the best bang for its buck. Going to surftech by far was an GREAT experience!!! Thank you Bobby for the recommendation… This paddle rocks!!!

love this place! great place to check out surfboards and SUP’s… great selection of boards and if you want to try the boards out… you can rent them out too!
Bobby and Scott there are awesome, they always hook me up with a new fun board to try out! It’s always great to be able to try the board out before you think about buying one of them! :)
They even have a drop off service, if you need them to drop you and the boards off at Ala Moana beach.

If you’re into Surftech boards this is the place. Since they are the distributor for the brand, they have or can get any model from their vast selection of boards. They’ll also be the first to get any new models. I bought one of their boards, a 7’0″ Channel Islands M13, Tuflite construction, designed by Al Merrick. From the limited amount of times I have taken this board out, I have great expectations for this board when I can finally get it out in some better waves. For a shortboard, it’s rather long at 7’0″, but it feels much shorter, like riding a 6’6″. It’s width and thickness (21“x2 ¾″) ;makes it perfect for older surfers like myself (I’m 55) who don’t want to struggle with the narrow, thin potato chips favored by the younger guys. So far I’ve pulled off a few things I have’nt done in a while on this board in less than ideal condtions which gives me confidence that when the waves get good, it’s gonna be a blast.

These guys hooked me up when we went to the Oahu last April…2009. They have a wide selection of Boards to rent and if you’re familiar with one of the boards in there quiver, you can dodge the Airline fees to bring your stuff with you. I found the staff, particularly Mark super helpful and they clued me into the Hypeflx stuff that is coming down the line. I’ve been a fan of the Surftech stuff ever since I ran across it in Freeline in Santa Cruz, Peter Mel’s dad’s store…

A group of friends and I rented a few stand-​up paddle boards. They were kind enough to offer drop-​off and pick-​up service to ala moana beach. Great guys and excellent customer service!
