I’m not going to sound pretentious and act like a french fry connoisseur, so I will give you a straight up no BS review. Here’s why I gave Street Frites 5 stars: The method: the fries are fried in woks, not once, but twice to ensure crispiness. The fries are then served in a cone, which I think is better than a regular bag. Sauces: there are so many to choose from, and they appeal to all tastebuds. There are sweet sauces, spicy sauces, tangy sauces, and of course ketchup for you purists out there. Like her cupcakes, the flavors that Kawehi makes are very creative. It’s obvious that she took a lot of time creating and honing these sauces. People: the people who man this tent are friendly and efficient. They definitely know what they’re doing. Price: I think $ 5 is a fair price to pay for a fresh cone of hot fries, with 2 sauces. However, if you’d rather pay $ 2 for gross McDonald’s french fries with only ketchup, then by all means go for it.

Street t Frites is nothing more than a french fry stand with different dipping sauces. For $ 5.00 you get fries and a choice of two small dipping sauces. Kind of a rip off if you ask me. I tried this place nonetheless at the May 2012 Eat the Street event. I ordered the Bacon Jam and Rosemary Ranch sauces. The Bacon Jam sauce tasting nothing like bacon and had a indistinguishable flavor. I have no idea what it was made out of, but I didn’t even get a hint of bacon. It was gross and I threw it away. The rosemary dipping sauce was fine, but the fries were sub par and comparable to those you can get at Wendys. For a place that specializes in fries, you can do way better than what you currently serve. Additionally, they made their fries in advance and they were not fresh out of the fryer, hence they were not that hot when I got them. Street frites needs to work on their product if they expect to survive in Hawaii.

I like french fries as much as the next person, but I think my expectations for Street Frites were too high. Street Frites has fries that remind me of Costco fries. I do like that they offer many sauces to accompany your fries. I tried the wasabi mayo, kim chee mayo, and rosemary garlic aioli. The best by far is the rosemary garlic aioli. I first tried these fries at the Kapolei Eat the Street. It was one of the busiest stands. My fries weren’t crispy, but I thought it’s ok, maybe it will be better the next time. The second time I tried Street Frites was at last month’s Eat the Street. It was the same, except this time they ran out of rosemary garlic aioli. I think $ 5 is too expensive for these fries. I’ve tasted better fries, but if you like french fries you will probably like Street Frites.

I can’t believe the GENIUSNESS of @StreetFritesHI has not been blasted out on Unilocal yet! Like. This ish is freakin’ HOT! No seriously! It’s hot, fresh, and totally effin’ rad! The Street Frites dream team is made of Kim P(of Laughtrack Improv), Kawehi H(of Let Them Eat Cupcakes), and Matty S(awesomeness). All fine folk with a nack for making a mean snack! So what are these street frites? Belgian-style fries! Yes, yes, yes. I hate to break it to ya, but French fries are not exactly… French! Although I lack the experience of real frites from the streets of Brussels, I can only assume these are pretty legit. Hand-cut potatoes? Check! Double-fried to perfection? Check! Fourteen+ dipping sauces to choose from? Check-yeah! Served in a newspaper cone of nostalgia, these frites are coated with large crystal kosher salt for your pleasure. And for $ 5 or so, you can accompany your cone with two tubs of sauce. At Eat the Street Kapolei, I sampled the bacon jam and garlic aïoli. WOW! The bacon jam had a nice smokey undertone with a sweet base. It was also kind of salty… much in the way that bacon is! The aïoli was definitely my favorite of the two though. The creaminess of it paired so well with the saltiness of the frites. This booth was ONFIRE at Unilocal Uncaged! Everyone was so excited to try something new and of course FRIED. The sauces were damn awesome… it’s so hard to decide which ones to get. I think I’m leaning into the fry sauce and perhaps a sweeter one that’ll turn this snack… into dessert. o0o0o0o0o0o. Did I mention they also make the sauces too? oh yeah! «To accompany our Belgian-style fries, we make 14 different dipping sauces: 1. Ketchup 2. Fry sauce 3. Rosemary Garlic Aioli 4. Bacon Jam 5. Ginger Miso Remoulade 6. Wasabi Ranch 7. Kim Chee Mayo 8. Shoyu Sugar 9. Liliko’i Honey Mustard 10. Li Hing Mango Duck Sauce 11. Jalapeño Cheddar 12. Nuclear Heat 13. Milk Chocolate 14. Vanilla Shake We also make special sauces for special occasions. Be on the look out for our lomi salmon and green onion mayo and our loaded baked potato dip.» Sounds like a WINNERWINNERBELGIANFRYDINNER to me! Whenever you’re at Eat the Street… early…try your very best to get to this booth. Kim, Kawehi, and Matty’ll hook you all up.

I’ve gotta echo Thomas O.‘s shock and disbelief that Street Frites isn’t the talk of the town yet… perhaps its because it is only at select events you will have the pleasure of trying their sinfully crispy generous portions of french fries along with creative toppings and a plethora of dipping sauces. I was initially introduced to Street Frites at Eat the Street’s Birthday Luau. I was immediately drawn in by the smell of fried goodness and when I saw their special offer for the night, I couldn’t resist: A cone of fries with kalua pig and servied with creamy lomi salmon and black pepper dip. AMAZING! To top it off, the woman serving was so friendly and though she was super busy was kind enough to describe all the various dipping sauces they offered(there are a LOT!) and offered to let me try a couple. My next encounter was at the Unilocal Uncaged party at the Honolulu Zoo where they were the only food vendor continuing to serve the last to leave stragglers at the party even though they were down to just two sauces — good olé ketchup and … chocolate! IMHO anything with fresh hot fried potatoes is a winner, even chocolate! Next time you see this stand at any food fairs or events, do yourself a favor and visit! Otherwise you’ll live a life of regret… until the next food festival!
