Star Beachboys

We stumbled upon star beach boys completely by accident and were immediately taken very good care of.
The instructor was patient, the training was very personal and the quality of finished images was awesome!

Before arriving in Oahu, I heard that the best waves for surfing are in North Shore, so I first scheduled a class there. Even though the forecast was partly cloudy, the weather was horrible and waves were brutal (Notice: It was my first time), so we canceled the class. I suppose North Shore is a great site only for pro surfers.
As I got back to Waikiki –disappointed-​, I super randomly met Micah and joined a group class right away. We were a group of 4, but Micah was awesome managing each of us in the water. I don’t know if I was too lucky, but the experience overall was amazing. The price was fair, $ 40 for an hour. The class in North Shore was $ 35 for 1.5 hours, but keep in mind that you do get very tired after an hour of surfing. The next day I rented a surfboard again and realized that I succeeded in learning the basics. I wish I had more time in Hawaii and could take more classes.

Thats why any where you go for any type of a Lesson or Lessons that you are taking is alway good to check out the back grounds of the company or worker’s. So many surf schools have pop up all of the islands today some good & bad. Remember if you check or look at because the Waikiki Beach Boys have been doing this for years. We are like lifeguards and Watermen and dealing with so many type of people from all over the world and to deal with them is all about haveing that Aloha. Aloha is Priceless and you have to have it to give it and where in the world can you have a better office to work out of? So its all about giving and showing the Aloha (Love) of your passion and to remember the Duke Kahanamoku talk to everyone is to give & show everyone about our Love of being on the beach of Waikiki. As promised, both my husband and I got up. Not only did I get up, but I SURFED my first time ever trying it thanks to my instructor Michael.
Their rates were fare. Basically the same deal as the guys across the beach.
The only reason this is not 5 star is because I have nothing else to compare it to.
I recommend Star Beachboys!

The staff was rude. One was inappropriate and the other pretty much yelled at me.
The rented materials were really good tho. No complaints there. They’re also very close to the water so it’s not hard to carry by yourself.
Price is average since it’s one of the two places you can rent from. Might get better service at the other rental place just to the left but it is what it is.

this is the 2^nd time I try this company. the first time was in 2013 for surf lesson and everything well smoothly. we tried them because they are Hyatt preferred vendor. this time we tried canoe and was told we have to wait because canoe must have a minimum of 4 people. no issue so we waited for an hour and a half. I was told by the skipper of the canoe that he has no issue for taking two since there is no customers waiting. the guy at the counter said we must wait while the skipper was willing to the just two of us.
we waited and then a group of 21 showed up. they go first as three separate groups. the guy behind the counter said we go after them which I don’t have an issue. he said to come back in 45 minute to get ready. we got back in exactly 45 minutes and waited another 15 minutes. then the canoe got back in, we found out it was only the first group of three just finished and two more to go. I asked the guy behind the counter on why asking me to come back in 45 minutes when each run takes more than 30 minutes. he said he never told us to come back in 45 which is an outrage lie. I have no issue if he had been honest up front on run time and asked us to come back in an hour and a half. needless to say I didn’t like being lied to so I asked for my money back. I just don’t want to wait any longer and deal with the dishonest counter guy. we waited for almost three hour without a canoe ride and we were the first customers on the list. I am gladly to take my money elsewhere than to deal with some guy jerking us around. Hyatt should be aware or check up on their preferred vendor for this kind of service to their guests.

I will admit I was a little skeptical of walking up to a tent on Waikiki beach for a surf lesson, figuring it would lure unsuspecting tourists to a less than stellar experience. Boy am I glad I didn’t listen to myself!!! Our options were $ 45 each for a group lesson or $ 55 for a semi private (2 of us). We chose the semi private and Kili was our instructor. He was absolutely amazing and promised us we would get up.
Our first few tries were pretty lame but Kili explained to us what we were doing wrong (in my case I kept looking down). He made it easy to correct. First time up, about 3 seconds. Next time, I was up the e tire way — almost to shore. Next time, same thing, but I knelt back down instead of jumping off my board. My daughter got up too.
Kili could see I was tired from all of the paddling so he towed be a few times. I was most appreciative as I seriously underestimated the intensity of the workout.
Thanks Kili for a fantastic experience and memory!!! If you’ve ever wanted to try surfing — this is the place to do it. And Kili is your guy!!!

Friendliest on the beach, no doubt!
Wanted my boys to get acquainted with Hawaiian beachboys, so we signed them up for surf lessons and took an outrigger canoe ride. Also rented surfboards from them, so got a pretty good overview of most of their offerings. Top notch all the way.
The surf instructors were friendly and fun and my kids caught a ton of waves. The canoe captain and crew were super experienced and gave us some great rides. The surfboards we rented were in good condition and there was a pretty wide selection to choose from. Most importantly, we found their staff to be the friendliest on the beach and they really wanted to make sure we were having a good time.

The beachboys seemed pretty cool with me. They didn’t have to teach me anything, as I paddle as much as they probably do. It was funny, because Jennifer was recording my beach start from the sand to the water, where I run and jump onto my board. The beachboys were surprised that I stood up right away. I guess more renters are new to the sport of SUP.
The next day, they offered me 2 hours for the price of one. They remembered us and also told is where to paddle to minimize the windy conditions.
I can’t wait to return to Oahu and SUP more!

My wife and me never tried surfing before. We were sunbathing close to SB’s booth and decided to take a lesson. We went for two semi-​private (2×110/hour) arrangement with Jason.
He introduced us to the basics of surfing and then spent 2 days (1 hour each) in the water with us. Jason was holding our surfs and releasing when a wave was good enough. If something was (often) wrong he would correct us giving an advice.
Me and my wife were able to surf with his assistance, and later I surfed myself. Not as good as with Jason’s help (choosing a right wave is a great deal), but still I was able to do so!
Rental prices for surfs are very competitive and the boys provide some time allowance (i.e. nobody will charge you for extra 10 min you held a board)

These people are absolutely ridiculous.
Me and my friends stayed the night at the Hyatt Regency, and decided to go to the beach after we checked out. My friends chose a spot on the beach, and I went to park the car.
When I arrived at the beach I met my group of friends that were squished between 2 umbrellas with beach chairs under them. They were their since early that morning and the beach chairs were set up around them.
After a pair of asian ladies got off the seat next to us we assumed it would be okay to sit in those seats (thinking that the hyatt was possibly providing them for guest) not minutes later a man came up to us and yelled at us asking if we were renting it. Of course we didn’t know it was for rent and said «okay sorry no we are not renting» when he left I got off the chair and sat back on the ground where I originally was.
The man came back and was angrily saying «if you’re not renting you should move» we were confused, we were not on his equipment and where we originally were. I Said «we moved» he kept telling us to move and that’s when I said «I will be in touch with my state legislatures on this» since at that point they were basically telling us to move to a different location on a public beach, when we were no longer touching his equipment.
That’s when he really started to yell «IS THAT ALCOHOL ON YOU» he said looking at our white hydroflask «ofcourse not «i said. «you’re students right? «he asked. «Yes sir I am» then he said
«Where do you go to school? UH (university of hawaii)?»
I was very confused, why did it matter what college I was attending and how would it benefit in this conversation?
«That is personal information you are asking us to disclose, I will not tell you» he proceed to saying «you know what Maybe we need to get higher authorities involved» he was making a huge scene. I said «I don’t get it why do you need my personal information?» My friend tried to stop me from continuing to talk to him. He kept yelling and left.
I was in complete shock and frankly really upset. His coworker then came up and yanked out the umbrella and moved the chairs next to us mumbling «fucking ass holes».
5 minutes later I went up to the tent and tried to apologize on my part for sitting on his equipment without paying a fee.
I then suggested as a professional buisness instead of trying to make a scene, why don’t you pull the person to the side and talk calmly instead of threatening to call police if we don’t move away from the equipment.
He said «we have been in buisness for over 40 years and pay $ 24,000 a month to be here». So yes they can legally rent out equipment like chairs and umbrellas and what not, but what they did wrong was asking us to move away from equipment they was set up around us.
These guys act like they own the beach, and are horrible to people on «their land».

Do not rent from here!!! The owner is very very rude. We were posted up on the beach near the rentals and he walked right over our belongings telling us to get off his island. Also, the prices are outrageous. You can rent the same equipment for a fraction of the price right near there on Koa street.

We decided to spend our last day in Oahu on the beach. I’ve always been interested in trying to surf so as we walked past Star Beachboys I had to stop and check out their prices for surf lessons. At $ 40 an hour for a group lesson I was excited, my husband was reluctant. Before making our final decision we stood aside and watched the on land «lesson» and chatted with one of the instructors, Uncle Gil. Uncle reassured us everything would be okay and convinced us to sign up.
Here are my thoughts on our experience:
+ The group lessons are $ 40 for 1 hour. My husband and I were the only ones that signed up for the noon hour so it was like we had a private lesson.
+ The on land lesson focused on how to position ourselves on the board, paddle, turn and steps for standing up. This was good for familiarizing ourselves and practicing the motions before getting in the water.
— The guys will tell you the area where you will be surfing is only about
3 to 4 feet deep. LIES! The water was at least 4.5 to 5 feet deep and even
more as waves passed. I am 5’2, an okay swimmer and can handle myself
pretty well in the water without panicking so I didn’t drown but I’m pretty
sure if you are as dumb as I was to believe that and not as fit and confident as I am you are SOL without a life jacket. Those waves can be brutal and trying to maintain control of getting on, staying on and in those waves can be kinda hard.
+ The instructor held on to both of our boards at the same time helping us get set up for the next wave. One at a time he would set us up, watch the wave then give us a push and yell out instructions– «Paddle! On your Knees! UP! STAND!» This was helpful for catching a wave and timing our moves. This was great because as a first timer trying to maintain stability, watch waves, focus on the next step and watching out for other people seemed a little overwhelming.
+ Someone from land takes photos of the lessons. They actually get quite a
few great shots. Photos start at about $ 20 then after that there are packages for CDs and flash drives.
+ When we were done, Uncle helped pull us in as one of us was experiencing
some muscle pain and we were both exhausted.
You can’t go to Hawaii and not try surfing. Where else and when would you
ever do it again? Would I recommend Star Beachboys? Yes, just make sure you mentally prepare yourself and know what you are getting yourself into first. In our
group lesson of 2 it was nice to have someone there to hold our board and set us up. I’m not sure what the max for a group lessons is and how much attention one might get but its a good thing to ask before signing up. I’m not sure what other spots charge for lessons but $ 40 was the cheapest was saw versus $ 60 somewhere behind the Sheraton. All in all the price was good, instructor was cool– I had a good experience.

I have to say, this surf lesson was beyond hilarious! There were 5 of us learning to surf, and our instructor was really friendly and laid back. I can see on his face «Oh geez, this is going to be interesting…» since the other 3 girls looked like they were in high school. So surf lesson, took about a mere 3 minutes. Amazing h’uh? He told us how to get on and get up and try to stay on and then «LETS GO!!» Whaaaattt? well, ok!
SO we paddle out into the ocean and I have to say that it SUCKS to paddle that far out. I was tired and exhausted and wanted to just sleep on my surfboard instead of actually catching a wave. Then he each made us take turns and when the wave was ready for us, he would yell for us to jump up and go. I was plenty nervous and thought that I was going to look super stupid but instead… NAILED IT! Got it on my first attempt and cruised like a champ. Quite exciting! and slowed to a stop like a pro!
Also, the price for pictures on a DVD is a bit much, but worth it because they take over 200 shots of you. Glad I was able to browse through them and its kind of neat seeing the process of starting and getting up and then surfing. Great company on the beach so try it out if you never have!

Lots of surf lesson and board rental places but these guys are the best. Instructor was awesome, actually got them all up on a wave the first try. Surfed all day. After the lesson board rental is only $ 5/​hr, what a deal!

We picked this one based on where we were standing at the time we decided to go surfing. I wanted a lesson so Tintin got one too. He was a natural so he didn’t need much after the basic instructions from Gil.
Eating right before surfing is a bad idea. I managed to survive, but it was difficult. The surfing part was easy, since I was able to get up every time I caught a wave, but paddling is a whole other story.
Gil was very encouraging. One of the other guys had told me that Gil would stay out there with us until we got up. Even though we got up right away, he let me hold his board and rest between waves, so he was still very useful. He also gave me recommendations on non touristy areas to check out. Thanks, Gil!
Remember to wear sunscreen on your back, especially if you aren’t wearing a rash guard. We have all the gear to surf locally, but I am not looking forward to the cold water after Waikiki.

I got hooked on paddle boarding. Easy to fine, easy to rent.
I took advantage of the early bird special. Come rent before 8am and get 2 hrs for the price of 1 hr ($ 20).
It’s a great deal.

Location Location Location! With a tent right at the main shower/​beach bar of Waikiki Beach, these guys have the primo spot for vacationing tourists trying to take advantage of the calm waters of Waikiki to learn to surf.
They have lots of boards for rentals, and even offer lessons in surfing, stand-​up paddleboarding, and ocean kayaking for an additional fee. Board rentals are cheap, and generally always available. In the slow season, they will often give you extra time for free (rather than a discount), so you should ask.
Took a surfing lesson with Micah and he was just awesome! He really cared that we understood the right ways to surf, and was so encouraging in the water. He even gave us his contact email so that we could contact him again if we ever had any surf-​related questions! Talk about above and beyond! The lessons were $ 40 per person for group lessons, and a little more for private. Group was 4 people big, so we had plenty of time to surf each.
Also ended up renting paddle boards from them for $ 20 for an hr (and gave us an extra ½ hour).
Easy, convenient, affordable. If you get the right instructor, the lessons are also kick ass! Would gladly recommend, and use them again next time I am in Waikiki!

While everybody else at the beach is sleeping on shore or wading in the water, you’re a more adventurous type, so what do you do? Go surfing, of course! Lucky for you, Star Beachboys has a tent right on Kuhio Beach, so grabbing a board and getting in the water is easy peasy. Prices may be slightly higher than at a brick and mortar shop, but you’re paying for the convenience of not having to walk a block away.
We were surfing virgins, so I asked the guy helping us get boards for some quick pointers. His response was something like «Stay on the board, paddle, don’t drown». Hah, funny. No, I didn’t want to sign up for the $ 40 surf lesson. But is it too hard to give some basic pointers?
Other than that, the guys here were nice and even let me stash my stuff in their tent. Other places wouldn’t let you do that for liability reasons.
We had the choice of a regular board for $ 10/​hour or a longer board for $ 15/​hour. Supposedly, a longer board is better for beginners, but we’re cheap so we went with the $ 10 option. Was that a mistake? Maybe not, since we sucked and just used the board as a long boogieboard. But I did catch a couple waves after some pro out on the water gave me pointers. Thanks, mystery man!
We had the boards for maybe 15 minutes past one hour, but Star Beachboys didn’t charge us for that extra time. That was cool. As was «surfing» for the first time. It’s just too bad we sucked so much. Next time I guess we’ll try taking lessons.

This is the place I rent surfboards or stand up paddleboards in Waikiki whenever I visit family and friends on the island. Because they have a good deal of 2 hour rentals for $ 10. Depending who you go and talk to at the Star Beach Boys stand is a hit or miss.
If you are renting boards, make sure you wax your board as some of them are not waxed enough. Also, take care of their boards nicely so that the next renters can ride with good quality boards. For example, the shorter boards (like a 7’0) I was looking through, the rails were banged up and cracked. I ended up renting crappy shorter boards anyway than the longboards.
I went back to Star Beach boys a month ago around 7am for an early morning surf sesh. Mikey was there to take care of me. I talked stories with him for a few minutes how I was back on the island visiting family and asked how Uncle Gil (one of the surf instructors there) was doing. After I got my surfboard, Mikey warned me there were a few beginner surfers out there that may get in my way, and he told me which the areas where the surf is nice that morning. He was so helpful.
A few days later, my boyfriend and I tried renting stand up paddleboards late in the day around 4:15pm. There was an older lady (not the nice auntie that usually wears a hat) at the kiosk and she wasn’t much friendly to us. We said «Hello, and how are you doing?» and she stared at us and asked what hotel we were staying at. Not a hello or a smile. Unfortunately, we did not rent boards because we didn’t make it in time for the 2 hour $ 10 rental because they were closing at 6pm. That was the only unfriendly experience I’ve encountered with Star Beach Boys.
If you are taking a surf lesson, make sure you ask for Uncle Gil. I met Uncle Gil back in 2009 when my brother and sis-​in-​law took surf lessons from him. He is so funny, and he is very encouraging to help you get your first wave. The whole time we were all out in the water, we were joking around and talking about food.
Overall, if you can wake up early around 6−7am, I suggest to surf the early sesh because the waters are not crowded at all leaving you with so much area to enjoy the waves in long rides. Once you hit after 9am, it’ll be peak time throughout the whole day flooded with people on surfboards, SUPs, kayaks, and the occasional catamarans and outrigger canoes. Then, you will have to share the waves or dodge away other people.
