Sinclair Library

Ahhhh, Sinclair Library… What can I say, this place is definitely full of some awesome memories. Just kidding. This is where I pulled a bunch of all-​nighters as well as THE place that I consumed more calories a day than I ever needed to (you can eat in here).
Although Hamilton Library is a lot nicer, there’s something about Sinclair that I love. Maybe it’s the older, more run down feel that motivates me to study? Or maybe it’s just the better hours. Either way, Sinclair is a good place to study. And eat. And pull an all-​nighter.

Will hunt down anyone gave this place a rating lower than a four.
Very very tolerant on letting you eat in the library.
You can eat and study in the first floor, than goes to 3^rd and 4^th for AC and much more quiet place.
This brings back tons of great UH memories.
Seriously though,
I’ll hunt you down if you give this lower than a four.

Reasons why I love Sinclair:
1. Open ²⁴⁄₆! ²⁴⁄₇ during the last weeks of school. It’s the truth. They close at 6pm on Friday and open back up Sunday at 11am. Last weeks of instruction and finals, ²⁴⁄₇.
2. THEY LET YOU EAT THERE — YES bring your food, your drinks, your snacks, if you got a lot of work to be done you’ll want things to munch on.
3. The Curb is there also! They have a small stand right near the stairs of the first floor to the right as you enter. Good luck catching them there though, I’ve only ever seen them open twice in the afternoon.
4. There are many places for you to sit. To be alone, to be social, so be outside, to be in a pod, to be on couches, the list goes on.
5. Third floor has A/​C but good luck finding a good seat.
6. Your friends are there and your NEW friends are the to share the possible outlet.
7. You NEED to show security your school ID or they won’t let you in. Doesn’t that make you feel safe?
8. Study rooms can be reserved in advance. Depending on where, you’ll need at LEAST 4 to get the key to the room. PLUS there’s A/​C.
9. You can get a tutor! Science, math, writing they got em.
10. IT is there to help you!
11. Computers! A few, but there are some.
12. If you got a parking pass, there’s bound to be some good parking nearby.
13. The view from the balconies are really nice.
Reasons why I don’t like Sinclair:
1. It can get loud. Sometimes, you don’t even have to think of it as a library. A lot of people like to study together, a lot of people like to laugh, therefore they can get loud. Be warned. Either tell them to quiet down, or move.
2. At crucial times when you really need to study, so does everyone else. So there might not be a table, unless you make NEW friends.
3. Unless you have a parking pass, you gotta park on the streets.
4. The empty bookshelves take up room where tables can be.
5. SANTA CLAUS
6. The balconies face the sun, heat, hot, sigh*
Obviously, the good outweigh the bad. So if you’re a UH student and live in town and need a place to study I’d suggest grabbing some food and getting things done at Sinclair. Your friends might just be there having a study party with Papa Johns and cupcakes.

This building has a lot of good studying spaces for people who want to collaborate or socialize, not for people who want to study in silence.
Student workers there can be a little clueless and not as helpful as they should be. I once asked a student worker in the front about the library hours. He was playing computer games, looked at me, replied to come back tomorrow to ask somebody else, and went back to his game. As in, he didn’t make any effort to help me.
I once asked another student worker where an office was in the building. She shrugged and didn’t do anything else.
The computer lab always has this nasty smell and is not always well ventilated. Plus, the keyboards are always super grimy, and I once got sick after using a computer there. :(I hope whoever runs that lab sanitizes their keyboards.

This place ain’t open ²⁴⁄₇ as of 9÷15÷13. They are open from 12pm to 6 pm on Saturdays and reopen on Sundays at 12pm until Friday at 6pm. This is the only library where you can eat food beside the 3^rd floor AV room. You can practically live there because of their hours. Try sleeping/​power napping and the security guards won’t bother you as long as you’re body isn’t fully stretched on the sofa. WiFi internet is great! 3^rd floor has the cool AC if you want to get sick after perspiring from walking one end of the campus to the other. They also have the Learning Resource Center (LRC) for free walk-​in tutoring sessions. Plus, there is a reserved area for the cool kids-​honors lounge. Computers are available in the first and third floors. Oh… They even have coffee outlet and refillable filtered water bottle dispensers. Overall, its a go-​to-​place for getting work done with comfortable seating. Just don’t forget to bring your student ID library card for after hours (9pm-​6am).

Why do I love this library?! How about open 24 hours 7 days a week! After 9pm though you need to show a validated UH id which can suck at times if you ran out the house and forgot to bring it with you… yeah that gets annoying.
There are plenty of seating here with nice armchairs to sink into or desks to sit at… it gets crazy before finals when you see people sitting on the floor or on top of each other lol. If you are hungry there is also a little coffee spot for some snacks and drinks. Wifi is accessible if you are a UH student and so are the computers but still a nice place to relax.
The first two floors of the library are not airconditioned which is nice when it’s cold or not that hot but if you need to cool down the third floor is completely airconditioned and trust me it gets cold up there… wear a sweater. The third floor also as the audiovisual center where you can rent out DVDs and audiobooks as well as listen to them there if you like. What I love most about Sinclair is the fact you can eat in the library. Hamilton is icky about that stuff and I prefer to snack while I study.

Open 24 hours – at night you must have a UH ID to be allowed to stay or enter for security purposes.
Lots of seating, inside and out. It can fever very hot inside – especially during the summer days. Upper floors have ac so I usually just find a table there, or outside if the weather is nice.

Just wanted to say, if you are interested in the hours, please don’t go by the hours on Unilocal,Call them for the hours. Today the library opened at 12noon.
Curb (a coffee place) is right inside the library, but opens after 5pm on Weekends. How cool is that? A coffee place in a library. AWESOME.

I go to Sinclair library for a couple days before an exam because there are plenty of available seats usually on the second floor and it’s actually quiet unlike Hamilton. Also, I heard you can bring food in here which is good if you’re planning to stay longer and need a snack.

Pros: open 24 hours the majority of the semester; outlets; usually easy to get a desk, except during finals week; air conditioned third floor; computer lab with decent computers; Honors Program; meeting rooms; you can eat on the first floor.
Cons: mosquitos!; old-​book smell on upper floors; printing system is a hassle; dirty tabletops; lack of air circulation on lower floors; back areas are a bit musty.
Also, I have to acknowledge the crotchety old security guard who mutters swear words under his breath and just hates students with a passion. I’m not sure how he got hired to work among 18 – 22 year olds. Actually, I’m not sure how effective he would be if someone tried to steal a book and run out or something. Would he run after the person and tackle them? Doubtful. Anyway.

I don’t have such a close connection with this library. But my friends went to college in UH. Sometimes we would head to Yogurtland and need to use the bathroom so we stop by Sinclair library. It’s a old and nice. I don’t know how useful the references and such are but it’s a nice place to stop by I guess.

Eh… It’s alright. In terms of the ideal study place to go to, I wouldn’t say this is it. Sinclair is better for group based study sessions. You can tell by the floor arrangement. Large tables set out in two of the larger rooms, then individual booths placed in the other room with computer usage, as well as out door seating arrangements. From what i hear there are more areas seating up on the second level, but Ive never ventured up there yet.
One of the big reasons why i give this place three stars, is because i look at it in comparison to community colleges under the UH system. For example take KCC’s library. Yes a bit smaller in floor space, but only because KCC’s library is equipped with so many computer stations available for individual student use! There are also several more individual booths that contains outlets for pc power cords. And even bigger private studying rooms reserved for students who want to have group study sessions without interfering with others’ studies.
Another thing that Sinclair is defected in, is their ventilation system. Without AC running in this library it tends to get quite hot. There are small fans mounted on the corner of the cement posts, but they hardly push out enough wind for proper airflow. Im not sure if this is UH’s way of telling students they need to lose weight, or maybe its some sort of method in keeping students awake. But it sure does make me perspire quite a bit which does in fact irritate me enough to stay awake.
One of the positive points of this place, is that it’s open for 24 hrs. Or at least used to be. I don’t know if that’s still the case. Its great to know that as a student we are provided with amenities to work over night studying or putting together a last minute project, if that be that case.

When I was an undergrad student at UH, I always went here for studying. I prefer to go here way more than the other main library on campus, Hamilton. First of all, there is not really a/​c in the building so there is not really any worries in freezing your butt off when studying. I think this library is way better for studying for both individual alone time and group sessions with other friends and students. There are some pretty nice desks you can go to on the ground level all the way up to the top floors up to the A/​V floor. On the top floor, you can rend out videos and DVDs. They have a pretty good selection of A/​V rental material. You can even watch the material there with TVs with VHS/​DVD. Since it is a library, you can obviously borrow books from here too, although Hamilton has a better selection of books you can borrow. Sinclair has a pretty unique and specified collection of books I guess meant more for research purposes on certain subjects and categories. Sinclair also has other resources within the library such as a computer lab, learning center, etc. It’s really nice and relaxing during the day. This library is great for it’s hour which is ²⁴⁄₇ except some parts of the weekend (Friday and Saturday). Even though I am an alumni, whenever I am on campus and what to just chill, I go to Sinclair. It’s conveniently located right next to Hemenway Hall and the Sinclair circle bus stop and University Ave.

Positives — 24 hours & Food & Desks with Individual Outlets!
I LOVE the fact that is 24 hours, well except for on Saturday nights till Sunday noon… but on the good olé’ weekdays, great place to have to study. I prefer the tables the individual tables that have the individual outlet, conveniently centered in the middle of the desks. Warning though… as of today, 4÷26÷12, there is still a couple rows that do not have power in there. There is a sign that says that at the front of the aisle that says it, but apparently it is not obvious enough and is easy to miss. There have been a few times I see people going down the same row with their computers and realizing that there is no power.
One of the perks is being able to bring FOOD into the library. When you need to have long study and/​or homework time, you need food. Food = brain power! Brain power = A’s for awesomeness! Now, who the heck wouldn’t want some serious awesomeness! That is one of the major perks about this library. Especially when you need coffee to stay awake! Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about…
Anyway, the only reason why I gave it a 3 instead of a 5, is that there have been many times where other people will talk as if they are not in a library. I mean, I’m not sure how their mamma’s raised them, but a library is still a library. You can bring in food, and it is open air, but that doesn’t mean that people aren’t studying in there. If I’m super focused, it doesn’t bother me. But there have been a several times where I have had to move desks to get away from the people who have forgotten that they are not in the mall foodcourt to talk… The name is called Sinclair Library because its a library…
Other than that… shout out to Sinclair LIBRARY (haha) for a good place to study. Whoop whoop!

When you need somewhere to study… for a long long time, this is the place to go! Most of the time, Sinclair Library is 24 hr, but not Friday and Saturday they are closed. They’re closed on some holidays too, you just have to check their website. Around exam week, they are definitely open 24hrs.
What I like most about this library over Hamilton is that it’s not so quiet and you can eat in here, besides the AV lab. They also have many options of places to sit. If you want to sit by yourself, they have carrels, singles, or cubicles. If you want to study with a group, they have bigger tables on almost all floors and even study rooms if you want or you think your study group would be too loud.
Downstairs and 2^nd floor don’t have AC, but there are open windows and doors to the balconies on back side. It gets a little cold on some nights. The 3^rd floor has AC, but it is kind of small and packs up fast on some nights. The AV lab seems empty most of the time, but can get full as well because they also have computers that people can use.
Other good stuff: you can borrow movies from the AV lab, print in the computer lab (you just have to be patient sometimes to wait for an available computer), reserve books, and the front desk people are really nice. You shouldn’t hesitant to ask help from them.
Overall, I get a lot of homework done here. I like the study atmosphere.

Oh Sinclair Library… You’re always there whenever I have to study, when I don’t feel like going home, and when I just want to sit around with friends in a warm spot without mosquitoes biting me.
This place is my second home. I’m always here, everyday (except for weekends), nonstop.
I come here instead of Hamilton because it’s not AS cold, and I get to go to the second floor lanai. It’s pretty nice too. Can see Diamond Head, cars, the bus, etc. Well, depends on where you’re at. On the third floor, it has AC, so if you want to be cold and then warm ASAP, I suggest Sinclair would be the place for you. What’s better, is the fact that you can eat in here too. Unlike the competitor, Hamilton.
This place is opened 24 on finals week, but during the school hours, it closes at 6 PM Friday, and opens back up at 12 PM Sunday. Not too shabby for an awesome library.
This is the library where you can actually be a little louder than you should be because people eat, and things go on outside that you can hear from inside due to the windows. There is also a tutoring option you can do when you register for it online at Learning Assistance Center (LAC), it usually is hosted in Sinclair Library. Besides, this place is near Yogurtland, The Blue Truck, and Campus Center! Food around a library within a 5 minute walk is a good library.
I do suggest going up to the second floor because mosquitos get you less than the first floor to the right side when you walk in. If you walk in to the left side, you wouldn’t get bit as much either, but you’ll be with your lonely self.
The only thing upsetting about this place, is that it contains archives of books that goes WAYYYY back in the day. Encyclopedias, etc. Hamilton normally has all the wonderful reading essentials that you would want to read, along with books that are required to read for class.
Overall, it’s a great place to study when you need to get down to business, and defeat the exams.

I love studying here. Even though the first floor is usually pretty packed, you can always find empty seats on the second or third floor. It’s nice that they have outside seating on the patio too ~ helps with cell phone reception! Haha. I love the breeze and the fact that it’s a comfortable temperature when I study in the mornings.

A long time ago, this was the sole library on campus. It was designed to take in the natural trade winds. At the time it was one of the largest open stacked libraries in the US. It was good for a time. But the University grew and up popped Hamilton Library, bigger AND air conditioned. To save the precious books, materials, and references, the important stuffs went to Hamilton. Sinclair now holds periodicals, music, and audio visual items. But the best thing about it, is that it is open 24 hours for studying!
If you are a UH student, you can utilize the university’s wifi and peruse Unilocal and FB when you really should be studying for your Chemistry exam. Or better yet, you can relax in a some what quiet environment. Yeah, the AC is noisy and it’s next to University Avenue, but ignore that and it’s pretty nice. Take advantage of the trade winds blowing through the library to make it comfortable. Sinclair is open to everyone, so don’t be surprised if you see some random scruffy person, but most of the people there are students. They do check ids when it’s late/​early morning, but during «normal» hours, people are allowed to enter as they please. I haven’t come across any flashers or ax murderers because I try to sit where there are other people. So if you are somewhere by yourself in Sinclair, be aware of your surroundings! It’s better to be safe than sorry.
Being the architect that I am, I really like walking into Sinclair and feeling like I’ve stepped back to the 1960s. At the main staircase, I like to imagine academics with their horn rimmed glasses walking up and down. Wait a minute, it’s that creepy picture of Mr. Sinclair that makes me picture that! But I like the overall layout of the library. Lots of large open areas, perfect for holding books and study tables. I really love the décor of the place, too. I love orange chairs! And there’s that smell of old. At least it’s not mildew! I think. So if you wanna study or feel like you’re in a time warp, check out Sinclair!

My preferred choice of peaceful study, Sinclair houses the faster computers, less bums, and all the audio-​visual equipment on the second floor.
I still don’t get why the university allows randoms to walk on campus to use the facilities. It’s gross and very unkempt of an institution. If they ever install a students-​only policy, it’ll be for the better… but for now I’ll just use Sinclair: D
There’s ample room for finals week, as a whole section on ground level is decked out with study-​cubicles for students. There’s plenty of room to wander, and the mood of the facility is very. casual.
