Nisshodo Candy Store

Loving coming here to buy mochi. My daughter usually wants to bring back mochi on the way back to college. Friendly service but wish there was more parking.

Google maps will sometimes lead you to an awkward parking lot that doesn’t connect up to Nisshodo’s location, but if you’re parked where you see commercial roll-​up doors, you’re in the right ballpark. The friendly staff will happily make suggestions, whether you want a specific treat, or want to pick up a box for an event. Large variety of flavors and fillings, as well as just good mochi. Worth stopping by if you’re in the area!

Mochi is one of my favorite things in the world, and I’m definitely kicking myself for putting off finding some quality mochi during my recent Honolulu trip until the very last morning. Luckily, Nisshodo was on the way to the airport, so we dropped by for a quick pick-​me-​up.

Our little box of mochi didn’t survive the plane ride, unfortunately, but everything was so completely delicious. I think I was hoping for the more filling-​stuffed mochi (possibly less authentic?), but I wasn’t at all disappointed by the subtle flavors we bought.

Chichi Dango is the most popular mochi here. The mochi is so soft, tasty and just right amount of sweetness. Finding this place can be a challenge if you’re not familiar with the area. For me, if there is a great food, I’ll find it. I love this place!

Tucked away at the end of a maze of warehouse in Iwilei, looking for Nisshodo’s is a delicious treasure hunt with a nice payoff. For mochi lovers, it is well worth the trip. I was luckier than most and a friend was able to show me the way. Their senbei and mochi is super fresh and I had no idea until I came here what fresh mochi tasted like. If you peek in their warehouse door, you can see the screened in area at the rear of the shop where all the magic happens. Their display is well laid out showing a wide variety of mochi, senbei and other delights. Their chi-​chi dango is excellent! The clerks are very polite and efficient and the most time is spent figuring out what to take home this time. If you love mochi, you gotta visit this place!

The mochi is so soft and delicious. It is definitely worth the adventure to find the place. My favorite is the peanut butter mochi which has a nice texture from the peanut butter filing. The kinako dango is also super yummy. I like it more than the chi chi dango just because the kinako adds a nice nuttiness to the mochi. Customer service isn’t so good but it isn’t so bad to the point to deter me from coming back. $ 10 minimum purchase for credit cards

Looking for Nisshodo was like an adventure. Going in the back of warehouses and tight areas, ummmm kinda not my forte haha. Ultimately my friend and I found it.
Nisshodo is considered Hawaii’s Best for 2015 for mochi and confectionary. The inside of the shop is small and so is the display case. Regardless it’s air conditioned inside lol!
We were greeted as soon as we walked in and my eyes straight glanced at those fine made mochi. What’s so funny is I just went to a mochi shop yesterday and I’m at another one on another island. Haha, only thing is my friend Anthony were bringing goodies back to Kauai but not me.
Their most popular item is the Chi Chi Dango at $ 7 a pound. I got to sample the fruitier ones cause I do love my fruity flavors. The prices are really good and the quality seems to be top notch. It was my first time here and I was impressed.
Finding this place can be a pain if you’re not familiar with the area. Like a treasure hunt though, it’s like gold once u do find it. I’ll be back here again!

How could you go wrong with chichi dango by the pound??? I loved getting these at longs as a kid and it was my first time at the factory. Totally worth the trek. I got a pound of chichi dango and brought it back to the mainland. Not sure if it was because the mochi was extra fresh or just the difference in climate but the mochi was still deliciously soft 1.5 weeks later!

Maybe I didn’t get the right mochi? Will update the review if I truly find something delicious.
The price point was quite alright, you have a nice wrapped up box for like $ 5,6 dollars.
And $ 7 for a lb of Chichi Dango, as other Unilocalers had suggested.
I was stupid enough to not try that, so I’ll definitely give it a try next time.
Be warn though, the place is really really hard to find for new comers.

If I could give zero stars I would. The lady at the register tells my friend that was buying mochi for us that if using a debit card it had to be 10 dollars or more. So he goes to the atm takes out couple 20 dollar bills and goes back and gives her a twenty. As she was giving him his change she gives him back 3 dollars. He was like mam I gave you a 20 and she denied and said no. He tells her how did I give you a ten if I got it from the atm. She was playing dumb and saying ohh she can’t do nothing about it. How can you do that to a customer? Bad business idc if the mochi good that lady jus gave then a bad name. Be careful people if you buy from here they might not give you the correct change back.

My fave Mochi place has got to be here at Nisshido!
I got some peanut butter Mochi & some other variety along with the kinnaku Mochi. The Mochi is always fresh & oh so soft!
I’m so glad there was a gal that I haven’t seen before working there, as she was friendly & knew what she was doing & more importantly she wasn’t grouchy. I have been here numerous times & some of the workers were not too friendly & they never write your order down & then they give you the wrong Mochi. Hooray for the friendly gal! I’ll be back for sure!

I absolutely love Nisshodo’s Chi Chi Dango. It is the BEST mochi ever. I was first introduced to their Chi Chi Dango by my cousin. She had brought some back to NYC on her first visit since she moved to Oahu. I fell in love. My 2^nd time to Oahu, I brought some back home. On my last visit, I brought 2 pounds home — 1 for me and 1 for the office. A few days later, mine was all gone. The one for my office was gone in 2 days.
It is the best — and they keep very well. They’re like little pillows of softness and joy! I tried out their most recent fruit flavored ones — I really like the orange but don’t care much for the strawberry and blueberry. I find the berry flavors to be a bit artificial.

I L.O.V.E. mochi. Do you love mochi? If you do, here’s the best mochi place to go to. I’ve been coming here for many years and they are the BEST!
Nisshodo Candy Store is located in a gray industrial building located behind of a strip mall. The strip mall is located across the street from Honolulu Community College. Once you see the mall, drive through the little drive way towards the back. You will see their store sign. There are a few marked parking stalls right in front of the store.
The store is pretty small and it can get crowded. You will notice a glass display of a variety of mochi, candy and snacks. Each food item is labeled and priced. Here are the following items:
Azuki bean mochi
Peanut butter mochi
Kinako mochi
Chi chi dango
Green tea mochi
Mochi crunch
Other delectables
The most popular item is the chi chi dango. Chi chi dango is a small rectangular shape mochi that comes in pink or white color. Each mochi piece is individually wrapped. The mochi is soft, tasty and perfectly sweetened. Just enough for one bite. And another… and another… and another. You can’t eat «just one.» It’s best to buy a one pound box or more. It is very reasonable.
I usually like to buy chi chi dango for gifts, for girl’s day, for New Years, for party favors or to satisfy my mochi cravings.
Go check out Nisshodo Candy. You will be glad you did.

Today was the first time I checked out the Nisshodo Candy store. I usually have someone else pick up or get it pre packaged at other retail locations. It’s not your typical «candy» store so don’t be surprise when you walk in to just a small glass counter full of different mochi’s.
If it’s your first time here it may be a little hard to find. This is were their actual factory is located so it’s tucked in the back of a building.
In honor of Boy’s Day we picked up a lb of chichi dango and some peanut butter mochi. Super fresh & delicious. I’ve never had the peanut butter mochi before & it was good. The peanut butter has a little crunch to it.
The price for chichi dango is now $ 7/​lb. The price went up from the last time I remember. But I definitely recommend this place for all your mochi needs!

One stop spot for your mochi cravings. Prices are ridiculously cheap, quality is amazing and their assortment of flavors will have you wantin one of each.
The shop itself, excluding the factory attached to it, is pretty tiny. A little window display of their treats is about all you really need. What you don’t anticipate and slaps you in the face once you take your first bite, is the freshness of the mochi. The subtle rice taste is truly a testament to just how fresh and authentic their mochi is.
It looks like they get a ton of large orders, so if your planning to order in bulk, I’d call ahead cause they only have so many in their display. Tried a couple of their other Japanese treats, but nothing quite beats their mochi… green tea’s my favorite, by far!

I used to be a solid Fujiya girl, but I think they may have gotten a new owner or something because the quality of their mochi is now the worst.
I’d been to Nisshodo once, and though the chichi dango is good, the woman who helped me was really rude… I even tried light banter that caused other customers to laugh, but she kept a straight face and no response. When I went back the second time, I got her again, still just as rude, but I noticed a really nice haole aunty helping with another customer and she was so nice, I wish I had gotten her instead :(Now I send my mom in to get the mochi while I stay in the van with the baby. She has more balls than me and doesn’t mind getting the mean lady.
Anyway, I’ve made the switch to Nisshodo probably permanently. We now pick up mochi once a week for my sick uncle, this is the only thing he enjoys eating. I like their chichi dango, it’s nice having them wrapped in the little paper, they seem to last longer too. I wish they had a haupia/​coconut flavor one like Fujiya though. The habutai is pretty bland, it tastes like the old fashioned kind that grandma used to make. I like it sweet. The mochi is soft and they use the right amount of katakuriko so it doesn’t get all sticky and messy like FUJIYA!

Wow! I tasted the mochi fresh and it was delicious. 3 days later-​it was still delicious :) Nisshodo Candy Store’s mochi is definitely in a class of its own. The mochi texture is perfect and I can seriously eat quite a few in one sitting.
My favorite? I really can’t decide… I like them all :)

I admit it. I get lost almost 9 out of the 10 times I go to Nisshodo. I swear they move their shop every time and that’s why I can’t find it. :)
I only venture out to Nisshodo for their chichi dango. They have the best. I haven’t had a chance to try anything else yet but I would like to one of these days. Their chichi dango are sweet and delightful, I’m not sure whether I would like to try anything else. And a pound of chichi dango is only $ 6.50. That’s a great price. I could probably eat a pound all by myself. :)
