We’ve all gone through the inconvenience of taking our torn and/​or old window/​door screens to a hardware store to be rescreened. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a mobile service; i.e., having someone take measurements and rescreen our window/​door right at our homes? Nakama Door & Screening LLC does!
In November 2014, my hubby just so happened to see these two guys, Alex Saldivar and Neal G., fixing screens at nearby homes where he parks his car in the morning near his workplace. Knowing that we needed our window/​door screens to be replaced, he chatted with them while I checked the Unilocal reviews to determine whether their services were satisfactory. There were many five-​star reviews, so it’s a go!
I called and left a message with Alex if he could come to my home to see which screens needed to be redone. He promptly called back and came by within a day to give a free estimate, as he said that he would be doing some work in the neighborhood anyway, so he would stop by.
Alex stopped by and discussed with us each window screen and sliding screen doors that he felt needed to be redone. There were a total of 12 windows and a sliding door, and we respected his honesty in assuring us that there were some that need not be redone. He also recommended certain frame colors and screen shades that would match the house paint. We were satisfied with the estimate and screen selections; we gave him the go-​ahead. As this was about two weeks before Thanksgiving 2014, we had wanted the work completed by Thanksgiving Day, as we had a family dinner gathering at our home and knew that it was cutting it close. We explained the situation to Alex, and lo and behold, he noted that he had all the materials to do the work and would fit this job in their schedule two days before Thanksgiving! What a godsend despite the short notice!
Two days before Thanksgiving, Alex and Neal arrive at 7:30 am and proceed to set up their «shop» in our garage. Without taking any breaks, they focused in cutting the frames, inserting the screen material, and replaced the windows and sliding doors. They worked fast and knew what they were doing; they were finished by 12:15 pm. They took the old screens with them, removed any scraps and debris, and vacuumed to remove the fine particles of the screen frames and material; our garage was cleaner than before they came!
We were extremely satisfied with the excellent workmanship and a year later to this day, the windows and sliding doors have held up well, as we have not had any problems during the year. We loved that our new sliding screen doors just glided along its track with a push of a fingertip, which they still do a year later today. They showed us how to use a silicon lubricant spray periodically on the tracts so that the doors would continue to glide effortlessly. They also gave us tips on spraying lubricant on the joints of our glass awning windows so that the joints do not rust. We found Alex and Neal to be so very professional, efficient, polite, and detail-​oriented, while assuring us that they stand by their workmanship. Both were also very friendly, as I learned that Neal attends the same church but at a different location, as we talked about the activities in our churches.
Started in June 2012, the company’s name «Nakama» is not based on the owners’ names, but its Japanese definition translates to a circle of friends with different skills and experiences. As such, the two partners are good friends who each have specific skills that complement each other in providing a seamless solution to this kind of home maintenance. Alex has 34 years of experience in woodworking, metalworking, welding, doors and mouldings, carpentry, and furniture/​cabinet design and building. Neal has 30 years of experience in woodworking, carpentry, framing, auto, and landscaping. The company’s goal is «to provide quality, efficient and uncompromising service with a passion for excellence.»
Not only do they do custom-​made rescreening and screen repairs of all types of windows and doors (e.g., wood windows, pet screens, sun screens, etc.), but also jalousie window repairs, and fabrication of windows and doors. They also contract with their partners on other services: door/​window/​floor installation, custom carpentry, termite damage/​wood rot repairs, trim mouldings, bathroom/​kitchen renovations, cabinets, closets, decking, stairs, room dividing security camera set up, and others. Their hours are from Mon. to Sat., 9 am to 5 pm, and they service areas of Honolulu, Hawaii Kai, Pearl City, Aiea, and Salt Lake.

My condo was built in 1959, and I believe the jalousie windows were original. They needed much TLC. I searched a company who can repair them on Unilocal,and from other people’s positive comments I decided to give these guys a call. I had to leave a message but they returned my call right away. They first came out to give me an estimate and showed up at my place way before they had promised which was great because then I could maximize my Saturday. On the following Saturday, they came back to fix the window. They arrived earlier than they said they would — again it was great!
Because my jalousie windows were so old that they could not find the part they needed but managed to fix it by taking some parts from other stationary windows I had. Great! Very talented when one can come up with the solution by being creative and figure out the problems!
I did not compare the prices with other company, except for one another company that I called and left a message, and they never returned my call, but I assumed they were reasonable (as I over estimated the job before they came out for the estimate), and I thought their price was good and fair.
Alex and Neal were very friendly. Great guys! Please keep up the great work!

My fiancé’s sister and brother in law who lives in the mainland, visits us a couple of times a year, wanted to install a screen door for us. They found Nakama Door and Screen online, and decided to have them do the installation. They sent a guy named Leo Pruner to do the work. He stopped by, took some measurement and left. Leo quoted us $ 850 to reverse the door swing on a new solid core slab door and install a security screen door. He wanted $ 500 up front before he would proceed. Once he received the check, he called and said he would pick up the doors and start the installation. The day he came over with the doors, he shortly left to exchange the solid core door because he said it was to thick. He returned with the door, a 36 inches wide door, (our door opening is only 30 inches) so instead of getting the right door, he cut off 6 inches off the side. He also had to cut the length. While cross cutting the bottom of the door, he did not care about the circular saw blade tear out when you cut across the grain of the wood. I would have been fine with that if he installed the tear out edge on the bottom of the door, after all a door sweep would have covered his unprofessional cut, but instead he put the tear out edge at the top of the door, go figure that one out, I can’t. Next, he drilled the holes for the door knob and deadbolt without even checking where the security screen door’s knob and deadbolt were, so you guessed it, the knob on one door banged the deadbolt on the other door. He said the door frame needed to be built out, so he installed 2×2’s on the sides and top and proceeded to permanently install the security screen door with those one way security lag screws, the ones that can’t reverse out. Well, guess what? Yep, the door knob on the screen door banged the deadbolt on the solid core door. He said we needed to purchase a lever style door knob, then it would clear. Well, we already bought and rekeyed the knob and deadbolt and now he’s telling us to buy a lever type knob. So I went and bought a lever knob, had it rekeyed, took it home and installed it myself. Guess what? Yep, it still banged, it cleared the deadbolt and hit the door. Not only the door but the threshold was unprofessionally installed, he had a metal threshold hanging over the existing threshold almost 3 inches, so it would flex when you stepped on it. It’s a good thing none of us were overweight. The door sweep he installed at the bottom of the door was in two pieces, this must have been leftover scraps form another job. This is a $ 13 item. So, as you can guess we were not satisfied with the work, we called Leo and told him a stopped payment was put on his check for the remaining balance of $ 325. He said he would come back and fix it. The day he was scheduled to do the correction, he texted and said he just came from the doctors and said he had a torn ligament and tendons in his arm, and since we put a stop payment on the check, we should use the balance and find someone else to do the work. I hope no one else goes thru what we went thru. I ended up doing it myself.

What can I say about Alex and Neal? These guys can work through any screen door solution and can fabricate and customize something that works for you. I’m sure of it… I purchased a condo that had an enclosed lanai. There were huge sliding glass doors, but no screen doors to go with it. Somehow these geniuses fabricated something that worked for me at a fraction of the cost but they didn’t skimp on the quality.
Their customer service is nothing short of amazing and the quality of their work is paramount.
Highly recommend these guys… Luckily I ran into them while browsing through Unilocal reviews on another larger screen solutions company.

Very great and hard-​working guys, Alex and Neal, who have been awesome when it comes to working on the screens and windows. They are very detail-​oriented in their e-​mail estimates and provide other useful information, which is definitely helpful. My family and I had them do two projects on my mom’s house recently (also my late-Grandma’s house). The first project was replacing the windows in the front and back which were getting very outdated and hard to open. Both guys did a fine job with replacing them with the jalousie windows.
The second time, which was a few months down the line, we had them replace the screens and again, they came through and did a perfect job of taking out the old screens and then priming the areas appropriately. Alex and Neal came back a few days later and worked hard and diligently to get the new screens in place.
They showed up on time and often early to get the work done. We’ll definitely go to them when we need other window/​screen-​related things done. And they enjoy chatting and sharing stories (some of them about Hawaii Five-​0!).

From my first call to the end of their work on my rental, I was very satisfied.
I first called to inquire about an estimate. Over the phone I was told the prices and they scheduled an appointment to come over. At first I told them I wanted to change the handles on the jalousies from the turn style to the pull handle. Instead of just letting me do that (and make more money), they informed me that the turn style is actually better since it prevents the windows from slamming shut. They suggested I keep the handles so that the window could be left open just a little bit without it slamming shut. (Didn’t think of that!)
They came and provided me with a detailed estimate via email. They were very prompt in replying to my emails. (Now that I’m looking into various vendors to fix up my house, you’d be surprised how many companies come and take a look at your house, then you never hear back from them again.)
They showed up early and already were pulling off the old screens by the time I arrived. I was very happy to see that they replaced my old gray aluminum frames with white frames, which matches the paint.
I’d definitely hire them again in the future.

Pretty impossible to get ahold of these guys, I don’t see the sense of having a business number if you don’t answer it… My recommendation is to look elsewhere

These two guys are the hardest working repairmen I have ever met. It’s been almost a year since they replaced all the window screens, sliding door screen, fixed the track for the large sliding door to my lanai, and replaced the parts that make the jalousies operate. For two days they arrived early in the morning, basically skipped lunch, and then stayed well past 5pm. They were determined to get the job done. And, I have four floor to ceiling stacks of jalousies, two windows a bit smaller than average, and the sliding door and screen. This job required a lot of work! There was one part of the job that they worked especially hard to repair. Because of building settlement at my condo it was very difficult to fix the lanai screen door and window door track. Alex explained he had an idea for adding an extra track at the top so the doors would stop falling out of the track. A month later he returned with the new part and my windows and doors have been in great condition ever since.
This company has the best rates and seems to be the most ethical of any other company I researched. Some window repair companies told me I needed a full replacement of all my windows and wanted to charge me up to $ 40K! Alex was able to do what ended up being three full days of work for him and his partner for about $ 3K. I am happy with the results and recommend them highly.

Nakama installed two heavy duty, sliding screen doors in our condo living room and they are great. They slide easily and match the color of the window casing so they are almost invisible.
Alex and Neal measured, ordered material, and installed them in two weeks — at half the price quote by another company. They are professionals who were careful bringing the screens into the building, adjusted the fit, and cleaned up afterwards.

Nice guys, but only repairs jalousie glass windows. Not plate glass. Look elsewhere for that. To bad.

I needed the screens replaced on my slider, and these folks squeezed me in same day. The installers were very personable, knowledgeable, and very efficient. Two doors done in about 40 minutes.

Alex provided superb service on our single sliding screen door replacement. Fast, efficient and priced right. Will absolutely call Alex again for future screen repairs.

We needed to re-​screen a couple of windows, and I came to Unilocal to search for a reliable company. Based on so many positive reviews, I contacted Nakama Door & Screen. Unilocal saves the day again.
Alex gave us excellent advice and did a professional job. He offered a free estimate and when he arrived, he took the time to assess the rest of the screens in the apartment; he found 4 other screens that needed repair. Those windows get the strong afternoon sun and the screens had deteriorated so badly that he could poke his finger through the screens.
He also advised us that it would be better to use a more durable screen for the windows that were less accessible.

Alex and Neal did a great job on repairing our aged, stiffened jalousie clips and mechanisms — they finished in just a few hours. Highly recommend.

My husband reviewed them earlier when they came to do our security door. We had them come back to do our window screens and patio screen door. They are very efficient and very good at what they do.
They came, verified how many screens they were going to do and pretty much got to work! I thought they might do the screen door later (since it’s a bigger job), but no! They did it right there with my window screens! (I had to get 4 screens done.) They made sure the fit was snug (but not too much so that we couldn’t get the screens out on our own). They were done in a couple of hours!
The screens and screen door look wonderful and I couldn’t be more pleased. My screen door glides across the track with minimal effort. They do quality work for a reasonable price.
They are also very friendly and just great guys! I totally recommend these guys if you need any window or door work taken care of.

These two gentlemen were very prompt in getting back to us about estimates and doing the job.
They seem really into what they do. When they pulled my bent window screen off they both got excited because of the width of the metal used, «Oh it’s 7/8^th.no wait I think it’s a 3/5^th…oh yeah! It’s a ³⁄₅^th! Yeah, that’s a nice one there. That’s so rare to see these days.» They were chattering amongst themselves like I wasn’t even there! LOL!
Anyways, my point is that they seem genuinely passionate about what they do, in turn means that they are very knowledgable and thorough as well. Which they were. I appreciated that they were honest too, saying how some jobs were easy enough for us to fix, even told us what we needed to do it ourselves, but offered their services as well.
Anyways, for us it was $ 40 to replace an entire screen and $ 65 to fix a door. I don’t have a bunch of other places to compare to, but I liked their work, their professional and efficiency, so I’d use them again.

Alex was super responsive and communicative, gave me a quote on my broken mirror in my closet sliding door. I then called a bunch of other places and discovered their bid was super reasonable. Other places were focused on getting me to bring the door down, and pick it up, or be charged huge additional cost for them to come to me! Booooo!
I went forward and Neal came out to pick up the door. Good friendly service combined with luck (the mirror of the right size was unexpectedly available) had my door replaced the NEXT DAY (your results my vary :)
Even if it had taken the week they estimated, I would have still been pleased.

Alex and Neal were extremely helpful, courteous and prompt in their service with me. We just bought a house in Palolo and had a bunch of issues to deal with, missing screens, broken jalousie handles/​clips, missing hardware and jalousie glass, etc. They walked through the house with me making notes of which windows needed what, started working that day and told me for the items they needed materials for they would come back the next day (tomorrow).
As expected, they showed up the next day without me having to call them to hound them (surprise!) and finished everything they had promised. The fee was very fair considering what I would have had to pay for in supplies and for a typical handyman.
For all of your window & door screens, jalousie windows and wood window repairs… look no further than these guys. I always find it best to have specific vendors who handle a specific task rather than a handyman who says they can do it all.
