Moku Surf Rentals and Board Shop

I’m not sure if this is a child’s day care center or a surf shop. Don’t waste your time here.

I took lessons two days. First day the instructor was relatively better but not very interested in teaching. While i inquired the price they made it sound like pictures are free. It turns out the they take pics for free using go-​pro but charge you $ 30 if you want to buy them. Even if you give your own SD card. I dont mind if they charge but the should be open up front. Second day girl instructor made zero attempt to teach me, kept chatting with another instructor in the water. I paid $ 83 per lesson each day + $ 30 for pictures.

Worked with Daniel and he was very friendly and efficient. The 3 hour rental of a long board is the same as half day rate, so just went with the half day rental. I ended up hurting my shoulder and returned the board within an hour and Daniel was kind enough to give me credit for another day… although I didn’t use the credit, it was very cool of Daniel and the shop to offer me that… lots of boards to choose from (all hard boards, good quality)… most boards have a GoPro connector, so I was able to get some good video. Highly recommend this shop.

Didn’t get a lesson so can’t speak to that. Just came by to rent a board. Locals are nice, efficient, and board prices are good. They seem to have pretty much anything you’d need.

Boy, Moku was an absolute gem. We bought a Groupon for a semi-​private surf lesson for two and our lesson was awesome. They even answer e-​mails (booked our lesson a few weeks in advance). My sister was feeling ill the day of our lesson but we walked down and talked with Louie, who was out of this world nice, and let us re-​book for the following morning. They didn’t charge us or anything like that — now that’s customer service. We came back the next day and had a lesson with Derek (aka. Maximus). Super chill and had the GoPro going the whole time we were surfing. I thought he was joking when he said he wanted us to catch 30 waves but we definitely caught a ton.
Derek took a ton of photos and quite a few movies of us surfing (and bailing). They give you ALL the pictures and put it on a memory card (which you also get) — all in for $ 35.00. Not the cheapest but you do get everything.
On our last day, we decided to rent surf boards ($ 7.00/board for an hour). Because we took lessons, they gave us $ 5.00 off the total, which was a nice little discount. We had no troubles at all renting the boards and they weren’t sticklers when it came to checking out the board for dents/​scratches. If you’re a newbie, this is the spot and you won’t get ripped off.
If you’re in the Waikiki area and want to surf, definitely check them out. Prices are super reasonable, staff are friendly and it’s only a block away from the beach. Really easy to carry the boards down too.
Oh and they also let you borrow rash guards for free!

Great price and personable staff who were so helpful. Went with my sister and we were both able to get up and ride a TON of waves while getting a bunch of great pictures.
We were going to do a semi-​private class, but when we called they told us they had someone interested in doing a group class, so we took them up on it — saving us each $ 20!
Derrick has a ton of experience as an instructor and was super friendly, getting us all very excited.
After the lesson we got a deal to rent the boards for $ 5/​hr!

I have taken surf lessons several times with my wife and daughter with in probably more than ten years time.
With the instructors, you can learn to surf safely and more easily. The lesson by Derek was fun and quite encouraging to paddle out.

This is the best place in Oahu for surfboard rentals!!! I LOVE this place! They have a huge selection of rental boards, the best prices, with a great location a couple blocks from world class surf in Waikiki. Switch the boards out, try something new, and you can even buy the board if you love it! I used to be a local, and they still treat me like a local. I wouldn’t consider renting anywhere else!

Went here to rent surf boards and this place is a definite local spot! The owners love to take care of flight attendants and they always give us a good deal if you ask to sign «the book». This is the place to rent boards from that is off Waikiki Beach! They made you feel welcomed as soon as you walked in and made sure you were okay with carrying the board to the beach because they can get pretty heavy. Some of the workers were full-​blooded Japanese and I thanked them with a «Arigato Gozaimasu» and they were very pleased that I understood and told me they couldn’t wait for me to come back! :)

What a blast! Make sure you ask for Louie! Never surfed in my life, I was able to stand up and catch some waves right away. Louie is very down to earth and a great instructor, he gave my friend and I the best technical tips to be safe and have a blast. I expected to have fun, but not like this! I cannot wait to go back to the island and get back into the water… also Louie placed a GoPro on my board that allowed me to go home with hundred of pictures and some really cool videos. Thank you Louie, say hi to Carole for me, she was a great role model! :-)

We had a surf lesson from Derek and he was great! Very experienced, professional, gave good safety tips and got us to ride out so many waves! Best surf lesson we’ve had in Waikiki during our time here, and we had a lot of fun.
There is also an option attach a GoPro to your surf board to take photos and videos throughout the lesson — and you can (and will) purchase the SD card at the end of your lesson when you see how cool you look!

The shop is great the people who works there are very nice. That’s it!
I can’t say the same thing about the surf teacher I had.
In my personal opinion they need better instructor than the one I had.
He is not capable to teach, he has no patience therefore didn’t learn anything from him.
During the lesson time He was not teaching surfing but he was trying to lecture about generalized topics.
For example he made me picking up a bottle that someone also had left abandoned on the beach while he was lecturing me about environment and pollution. When I questioned him about his efforts in keeping clean and not polluted this environment he wasn’t able to show the same commitment he asks to others. In fact he admitted to drive an huge SUV car that pollutes and cause mass deploy of gasoline in the island…
He did his best to make me feel frustrated about learning surfing.
He is very personal he asks questions about your personal life, job and he feels in charge to make comments on it.
I will not go there again. I don’t recommend anyone to go there just for the risk to end up in a surfing lesson with that instructor: a waste of time (and money)

Highly recommend this place for taking lessons and for the board rentals. Also, take a private lesson with Lala! Price for the lessons are surprisingly cheaper.
My friend had no experience in surfing before but she found this crappy place online which we were able to book in advance. (@ Royal Hawaiian Resort) and failed. I previously took lessons both in Sydney and Puerto Escondido, Mexico as well but at the Royal Hawaiian Resort, they taught me wrong positions and took me way too further in the water. My friend and I were traumatized after their lesson. He made it sound like this is an easy thing to do and told us we need to practice more. My friend got hurt, and honestly, no instructor in the past took me this far either.
Long story short but I saw A LOT of people taking lessons with Moku on my last day in Hawaii. They told me to check out Moku surf rentals for a lesson. I really wanted to get over the trauma I got from the previous lesson so I walked in and booked a private lesson with Lala.
Lala was GREAT– in fact, she KNEW how to teach a beginner. She corrected my position, and tried her best to get over my trauma. My entire lesson with her was really trustable, reliable and enjoyable. Lala made it sure that i overcome the fear before the lesson and I did. She’s been surfing since she was 3 years old, and she really cared about my safety. If you’re a first time surfer or beginner who wants to take a lesson with an experience instructor, please check out this shop because they are cheaper, they record video/​take photos just for $ 35, and their instructors seem to know how to teach people and actually care about you learning how to surf.

Just got back from Hawaii and we rented everything from Moku. Their rates are the best and there’s no other place that can beat them on Waikiki Beach.
This was the second time we came back to Waikiki and Moku and they were even more amazing and made us feel like locals, hooking us up with surf lessons for the kids, board rentals, paddle board rentals and snorkel gear. This was our go to spot, and we even extended all our board rental days because it’s so easy to rent from them. They are open early in the morning so you can surf at sunrise and close late so you can surf at sunset, and are only 1 block from the beach.
Brian was super nice and always came and talked to us when we saw him on the beach and really welcomed us to Hawaii. The kids loved Derek as their surf instructor and he made it so much fun for everyone that they all want to continue surfing when we get home. He was actually my instructor the first time I came and he’s that good that I brought the family this time! Everyone at the shop is so easy going and you really feel like they just want to make your experience enjoyable. They even provided the parents with beach chairs and umbrellas! They also have a shop at North Shore, which we stopped by and it was just as amazing.
Moku will always be our go to spot when in Hawaii!

After reading all the positive reviews I was looking forward to the lesson. I was assigned Jimmy as my instructor. First he was late and when finally arrived he was a hot mess.
The actual instruction was okay. Jimmy really needs to work on communication and patience. Surfing is not easy and defiantly requires support/​patience from the instructor. I have never surfed before so I had to learn basic fundentals. I wasn’t picking them up immediately and as a result he started getting upset at me. GREAT WAY TO BUILD CONFIDENCE (sarcasm).
When we were out on the water he told me to paddle back after catching a ride. On the way back he just waved me back so I took the most direct route back. Apparently I was suppose to go around the currents. He never explained that and assumed a non surfer would know that. GREAT COMMUNICATION (sarcasm)!
There was also a time I had to bail off my surf board to make sure I smack into another beginner surfer who was jus wading in the ocean. Jimmy got upset that I did that and said I should of just kept going and he shouldn’t be there.
This is just my experience with Jimmy and it could be purely that I had a poor instructor. But I think Muko should better vet out their instructors.

My partner bought the groupon for a surf lesson for 2 for our trip. BEST THING EVER! We called and made our surf lesson at 7:30am. That part was smooth. Got to the shop at 7:30 and the line was out the door. They were packed with people renting their boards. Even with the long line they were quick to separate those with appointments from those renting. After dropping off our bags on their cart and throwing on a rash guard that they let you borrow, Kamalu gave us a quick tutorial on how to paddle, maneuver through waves, and stand on the board in the back of the shop. It was about 30 minutes of watching and practicing. After that, we carried the boards to the beach.
The lesson is done at Kuhio Beach. I was nervous and told him that I am not the most confident swimmer. He said it is super shallow. It is. I would say you’re surfing in about 4.5−5ft deep water. I might even be over exaggerating too. Great for us though! My initial fears were gone and I was more than stoked to practice.
The lesson was awesome and the pics/​video from the Go Pro were a great memory. You can purchase the SD card from them and you get over 1,000 pics from your lesson. It was incredibly fun and I wish I had done more surfing on this trip. Only downfall is that the area is pretty crowded with many people learning to surf. Not as crowded as I had witnessed later on our trip during the midday hours.
Definitely go here! If you get Kamalu, you’re in great hands. Buy the SD card for memories and cool photos.
*side note: Come here with nothing but your bathing suit. Their cart is right next to the fitting rooms and accessible for all. However, everyone leaves their stuff there and there is always more than one worker at the counter next to the cart. None of our stuff was taken, but if you want more of peace of mind, don’t bring anything with you.

The best deal in town for surfboard rental especially if Kama’aina. Very knowledgable and awesome staff. Really chill and talk story with you. Also a good place to buy find and wax. Great location 1 block from beach.

Why pay more to rent a board in Waikkki? The beach side guys will charge you and arm and a leg. Moku is a 3 minute walk up the street from the Duke statue, and they have plenty of boards. But it is the service that sets these guys apart. I was surfing by myself and was sketched leaving my backpack on the beach unattended while I surfed … No problem– Moku will allow you to leave your stuff with them! They have a rack where you can store your goods. Also– my IPhone had less than 5% charge left, they even charged my phone! Moku and staff just rock.

I love this place! This place is a surf rental/​board shop place (as the name implies), but they do lessons. If you’ve never surfed before, GO HERE. Go here, go here, go here. One of the instructors, Kamalu, is awesome! He is super patient, focuses on safety at all times, knows how to have fun, and makes sure we catch every single good wave! Believe it or not, I was able to stand up at the 2^nd wave. I was SO excited– it’s captured on GoPro (hahaha, you don’t wanna see the stupid surprised look on my face).
Before heading to the beach, the instructor goes over usage of the board on land. Lots of great tips– make sure you listen!
After the quick 10 mins of ‘land lesson’, we walked over to the beach– the shop is located just 1 block away from Waikiki beach so you’re able to walk over with the board, no problem.
As soon as we’re out in the ocean, once that good wave comes, the instructor will give you a push while you paddle and he will yell, «paddle! paddle! okay, stand up!» Don’t be afraid and just stand! As long as you listened to the instructor, you’ll be able to stand easily. We caught so many good waves that day, thanks to Kamalu!
So! Let’s talk money. We happen to get a great deal that particular day because it had been raining on/​off all the day– and no sun out. Why surf on that day? I don’t know. I’m weird. But it worked out great for us because not only did we get a great deal, but Waikiki wasn’t as crowded as it usually is! Woohoo! I didn’t run over anyone and no one ran over me! $ 30 for lesson per person (there were 3 of us), included board and rash guard, 2 hours. After the lesson, board rental is just $ 5/​hr! Woooot! Talk about a bargain! Oh, that GoPro was just about $ 30 for over 1000 photos and like 10 videos! Totally worth it. My first time surfing stupid surprised face. Just remember, private lessons cost more so come in a group. Also keep in mind we probably got a mad discount because it was a rainy day so don’t be surprised if your group lesson costs more than $ 30 on a bright, sunny day.
