I have followed Dr. Gerald from Aiea to his current location. He is one of the best doctors because not only is he very capable, he is genuinely caring and friendly and a lot of fun. It is important that a doctor has the rare quality of being warm because there are so many others that are good at their trade but forget about being human and/or just want to run a business. When I order contacts or glasses I do not expect immediate service since the work is contracted out. What is more important is that the fit is right. As far as the doctor’s staff, as in any situation, it takes two to form a good relationship. I don’t believe patients should demand service and be courteous themselves. The parking is not the greatest so I try to schedule my appointments on the week days. It is far more important to see a really good doctor.

5 stars for Dr. Gerald. He is very good, friendly and fun to talk to. I usually see him once or twice a year and I’m always impressed that he remembers stories I tell him about my family. 2 stars for his staff. Although his staff is very nice, the way they work needs improvement. When I need my glasses adjusted, you have to make an appointment and I always end up waiting 30 min. to one hour which really irritates me. Of course Sandy is very apologetic and offers to pay for your parking but I’d rather be seen at my appointed time than have free parking. If you need to schedule a follow up appointment, the receptionist prefers you call her to make the appointment than do it when you’re right there. So ridiculous! If I didn’t like Dr. Gerald so much, I would change doctors.

I’ve been seeing Gerald Matsuyama for over 5 years and thought of him as a pretty good optometrist. Sadly after ordering and waiting over 3 weeks for my new glasses to arrive, which I thought was kind of long. I used the prescription glasses as instructed for 3 weeks with no change to the clarity, sorry I don’t have Michael Jordan’s wingspan to reach my computer keyboard. Called to explain the situation several times, this went on for«OVER» a month going back and forth. There were promises of *Let me call you back* which never happened. *Things That Pisses Me Off (1) When they tell you that I’ll call you back and take forever to do so. Multiple x’s (2) Repeating the problem over and over. I’m sorry to say but I had enough and it’s time to move on! I really disheartens me to write 1 – 2 star reviews but it has to be done. + 3.5 Stars for all my previous visits + Minus –1.5 Stars for urgency to correct the problem…*Fail*

Dr. Matsuyama is great and friendly but his staff could use better communication. I ordered glasses in last December and waited around 3 weeks for my glasses. I called to check on the status of my glasses and they were«oh, they are here, I was meaning to call you.» When I finally got the glasses they had scratches on the lenses so I had to take it back. Another month later I call them back to inquire why it is taking so long… Turns out, guess what? They had my glasses in again but«were meaning to call.» AGAIN the glasses had scratches on them… again not their fault but the whole ordeal took over 6 months and then when I was fed up and requested a refund it took them several days to «approve» it. Dr. Matsuyama is good and nice but the office ladies need to be more efficient.

Dr. Matsuyama is a very very good optometrist. He genuinely cares about his patients and is very friendly. He makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. The staff is great and the location has good parking! I would definitely recommend him!!!
