Mai is so nice and so professional! My hair was damaged from the previous coloring and she really took her time to make sure that no further damage was done while doing my new highlights. She did color and cut exactly the way I wanted and the price was more then reasonable! I was there on vacation, I wish I could take her home with me!

I had an appointment with Mai. She is patient and detail-​oriented. She trimmed my hair very carefully until I was satisfied with results! Will go back.

For clarity, the only reason I’m rating this a TWO STAR, is because the staff was polite and accommodating.
My frustrations lie in the pricing (or lack thereof).
I wanted to get a haircut and color today, and my usual barber/​stylist was unavailable. I called Mai’s Beauty Salon to inquire about pricing. The lady over the phone had to ask me to clarify several times due to her unfamiliarity with the English language. I ended up establishing that a cut was $ 13.75, and that the color would cost me $ 30. She then stated that if I got them together, I’d receive a slight discount. This was great news, because I’m on a tight budget, and traveling to Japan later next week.
The cut went great, as well as the color. However, when it was time to pay, I was told I owed $ 55.47, which was NOT what I agreed to over the phone. In fact, she even told me that didn’t include tax. Not sure why I ended up tipping either, which brought the total to $ 61.02.
This was NOT what I thought I’d be paying, going into this appointment, otherwise, I would’ve opted for going somewhere else.
I would humbly suggest training the phone operators to be more knowledgable of the pricing, or assign that task to those who speak better English. It has nothing to do with the race, but EVERYTHING to do with misleading your customers.

Loved my cut done by Mary! Excellent customer service, they took me in right away & Mary cut my hair exactly how I wanted it. This will be my go to salon from this day on, lol.

Very nice place to get your hair cut or colored, the owner is very pleasant. Great for men, women and children.

I wanted a new hairdo but wasn’t ready to pay over $ 20 so I decided to browse for «$» salons on Unilocal.I found Mai’s and booked an appointment. She is incredibly nice and will try to help as much as possible! :) The job was quickly executed, she layered my hair and gave me short bangs. I paid $ 28 total for the haircut + bangs trim — a bit over my budget but it’s all right.
I definitely think she is someone you should go to for a fast and comfortable cut!

Its very challenging to find a good haircut in Honolulu for a FAIR price. It was an overall great experience, from the moment I walked in till the time I left.
Mai was genuinely nice. She has an amazing spirit and is very gifted. Mai did an A-​line cut and I was very satisfied.

I have read other Unilocal reviews about PARKING, but don’t let this defer you from receiving a great cut and great service. Their is a lot of ample parking in the residential area that’s walking distance to her salon.
Another Note: As I was waiting for my haircut, other stylists were cutting hair and they did an awesome job. Everyone in the salon seemed very genuine and I appreciate hairstylist who have a PASSION to cut hair.

Mai is incredibly sweet and always makes sure you leave happy. If you want a great haircut at a great price by someone who is a genuine sweetheart you just see Mai. I believe she only accepts cash only so be prepared! Parking can be challenging in the Kapahulu area so be prepared.

I have been visiting Mai to get my hair done for the past couple of years. She is so sweet and really loves what she does! She takes pride in her work and cares about her customers. She also makes sure to take the time to give a great cut. Her prices are reasonable and I have always left the salon looking great.

Called and the owner Mai answered was able to get an appointment quickly and boy oh boy am I so happy with the results. her, essence is true and it totally reflects goodness in her business.. my I am super blessed. love it

I came in here today for the first time based on reviews I read here on Unilocal (thanks, guys!).
Location: Right near Zippy’s along Kapahulu, near Campbell Avenue. Street parking is a bit limited. Tiny, hole-​in-​the-​wall, barber shop. Next to a bubble drink place.
Pre-​Cut: I wanted a short and sophisticated haircut, cheap, but done well. (I’m so tired of the hit-​or-​miss service at Supercuts!) I called ahead and Mai was very kind and willing to take me in an hour before the shop closed. I was assigned to Anna, who took the time to understand exactly what I wanted, studied the picture I showed her, discussed how she would do it, and made sure we were on the same page. Wow… no one’s ever taken time to discuss the cut with me like that before at Supercuts, Mastercuts or even Regis! I was nervous, cutting my hair super short with a total stranger at a new place that looked a little sketchy from outside! Big breath.
Service: Anna was meticulous and attentive to detail, and even took the time later to straighten my wavy hair and then trim, to make sure she wasn’t skipping or missing anything. I was extremely pleased with the way it turned out — SEE the pic of my hair compared to the pic I gave her! Whoa — pretty exact.
Tip: There were signs posted saying «cash only» because their cc machine was out of ink, but Mai allowed me to use my credit card since I was out of cash. There is an ATM machine located in the Zippy’s across the street (fyi).
Summary: $ 30 + tax & tip for a great haircut — I couldn’t go wrong! Mai complimented my hair and wished me well on my way, thanking me for coming and giving me a big hug. She seems to have repeat customers who she has very good rapport with. I enjoyed my experience and will recommend this place to all my friends!

My first time moving to Hawaii! I found Mai’s place on Unilocal ! I love my new hair cut. Ana did my hair. I have thick long hair and it took at least an hour to do my hair. She took her time really made it look great. I recommend this place. I met Mai. She was nice too and gave me a good deal because it was my first time

I have been going to Mai for several years now. She gives a good men’s haircut for a great price. And for me the icing is that she is a wonderful person. She’s had life hardships losing her husband to a motorcycle accident and now raises her two children solo while working nearly every day yet never complains. What a strong and admirable woman!

I walked in the other day for a long over due hair cut. Mai wasn’t in but Michelle did a great job. For $ 12.00, you can’t beat it. But, it really was an excellent job. I just needed my usually semi monthly buzz job. She knocked it out in about 20 minutes and did an excellent job, giving great attention to detail, like trimming my eye brows. Highly recommended for mens haircut.

If you are looking for a place to get a fabulous hair cut with a hair dresser who has good intentions and who listens, you can find her at Mai’s Beauty Salon! Mai was so sweet to take my mother in at the last hour for Mother’s Day. I wanted my mom to look 5 years younger yet Mai knocked off an extra 15! I loved it and so did my Mother! Thank you Mai!!!

Although the place is a bit small, the quality of service and haircut is definitely the same as from expensive salons that would charge you $ 60 — $ 70 for a haircut.
The first salon I went to since moving to Hawaii is Salon Mei. They did a great job with cutting my hair as well but they are so expensive! With Mai’s Beauty Salon, they only charged me for $ 30.
I recommend Mai’s Beauty Salon and I will definitely come back for another haircut in a few months.

I am in love with this salon. My boyfriend and I were looking rough. We don’t typically cut our hair because we have trust issues. However, after reading Mai’s reviews on Unilocal we decided to give it a shot because ultimately we had to.
No regrets.
This is hands down the best haircut I’ve ever gotten. Even better than professional, expensive salons that I’ve been to. The cut looks very natural and she (Mai) did a wonderful job blending the layers I asked for. She also did a face frame that looks great no matter which way I part my hair.
My boyfriend’s hair was very long and curly and he was also very satisfied with the service. He’s extremely hesitant about cutting it short, but decided to go for it. It’s longer on the top with a fade down the sides and back. It looks great.
I will definitely be going back for both cuts and possibly a coloring in the future.

Mai was incredibly sweet and caring. Even though I was in her salon for less than two hours, I hugged her when I left because she had become my auntie!
I was looking for a haircut that was cheap but quality. Usually I go to Paul Mitchell School but I was making a big move: cutting 12 inches off my hair and donating to locks of love.
I came in not completely sure of what hairstyle I was transitioning to but Mai helped me talk out the options and we decided that shoulder length layers would frame my narrow face best.
When I decided to get my hair washed and styled as well as my eyebrows done, Mai’s other hair dresser ran in the rain to my car to fill my meter: not accepting my quarters! Now THAT is going above and beyond.
My hair came out GREAT (if I may say so myself!) and I was so happy with the cut! I bought a Unilocal deal so got $ 30 for $ 25. With tip it all came out to about $ 62. Way more than I planned on paying but that included eyebrow waxing.
The only cons were that parking is tough in that area and you need to pay the meter in the spots you do find. It was an extra $ 10 charge for the hair wash and style when I thought that would be included in the $ 26 for the haircut. I guess I am just used to the $ 15 haircut at the school!
Mai was well worth the investment though and I will definitely be back!

Even though I love my long beachy waves, I knew I needed a cut badly. The bottom of my hair was dry, full of split ends and instead of black, they were turning reddish brown.
Anyway, I’m used to going to the same salon back in Santa Cruz where a simple trim would be anywhere from $ 65 to $ 80. I didn’t mind the cost because I only get a cut once or twice a year. And it felt like a nice treat to myself.
After moving to Honolulu, I have been looking for a salon with great reviews and at an affordable price. I purchased the Unilocal deal on a whim, I was skeptical and worried but I figured whatever happens, my hair will grow in a month or so.
I called to make an appt at 9am, went in during my lunch break at 11am. Yes, it’s not a salon where you get offered lemon cucumber water while you wait and browse fashion magazines. But, Mai is friendly, warm and professional. She wears her hair super cute by the way. She asked what I wanted, trimmed about 6 inches, layered and flat ironed my hair (I loved it, because it’s new to me. Having natural waves means that you always want straight hair, ha!) I woke up the next morning, washed my hair like I normally do. I love how my waves are now healthy and bouncy. I’m so happy with my cut! Thank you mai!
