So my friend tells me he wanted to take me to a new place for some grindz! The 1st few words out of his mouth was«CHICKEN» & «FRIED». BINGBINGBING! You know I am DOWN when it comes to any type of chicken that is Frrrrried!!! So we head out to the industrial area on Sand Island Access Road, and the place we go to is called — «Lunch Box Kitchen of Hawaii». Upon driving down to this place for lunch, we barely made it in(before this place closes). By the way, they close early at 2:00PM, because they open very early at 5:00AM… they must open early to catch all the working people by the shipping docks. Anyways, as we walked into this little restaurant, I could see they only had two tables with eight seats. They also had a ««bar type table with a few bar seats… if you choose to come here, it’s mostly a grab & go kind of place… as seating here is a premium. Upon scanning the wall menu, my friend & I basically came here to try their famous — «Spicy Mochiko Chicken!» I placed my order for the Spicy Mochiko Chicken(regular plate) which came with two scopes of white rice(they don’t serve brown rice… boo!), and a toss salad. My friend also orders the same thing as me, but instead of the toss salad, he went with the mac salad. What can I say about the Spicy Mochiko Chicken? Well, the spicy mochiko chicken did not taste spicy at all for me, but I have to tell you folks… this mochiko chicken was done beautifully! The chicken batter was all so light & crunchy, and the chicken was plump & juicy too! I’ve never tasted anything so good before! I think I wanna say it was even better than Mitsuken’s famous garlic chicken! Although my mochiko chicken was not spicy, the chicken itself still tasted pretty good, and had good flavor & taste! I was really satisfied with my lunch, and I gobbled it up very quickly! There is free parking in front of the restaurant, but bear in mind, the parking lot is shared by other businesses within the complex. Would I come back to Lunch Box Kitchen of Hawaii try more items? Of course! Chance ‘em gang!

For your occasional deep fried chicken cravings, Lunch Box’s mochiko chicken is legendary! There’s nothing like their generous portion of tender, juicy, wonderfully marinated, bone-in thigh meat filleted then battered and deep fried to a golden, crispy, crunchy, flaky goodness. Although it’s been many many many years since we last stopped in for a bite, this unassuming little hole-in-the-wall eatery has remained phenomenally consistent in quality and quantity. We also tried their hamburger steak for the first time. It had a nice, tender mouth-feel(not mushy nor compacted like a puck) with a deep, rich meaty flavor. Their ground meat combination is definitely superb and one of the best by plate lunch standards. As with all hamburger steak on the island, this one also appears to contain a bread additive, although the ratio of meat to bread was pleasantly moderate and not overly done. If you’re ever in the area, give them a try? There are convenient parking stalls lining the front of the strip-mall-like building. However, should you be there during peak breakfast and lunch hours, there may be trucks pulled over on the side of the road blocking access, but they are only there briefly to pick up and go. Also, try your best to wear machine washable clothing to this joint. Trust me, it’s a guarantee you will leave smelling like fryer oil.

Whoa! I think this is DABEST plate lunch and bento spot on the island. It is located on a quaint strip mall on Sand Island and there’s plenty of parking stalls. QUICKTIP: It’s CASHONLY, but if you’re like me and don’t carry cash — there’s a Bank of Hawaii ATM right outside(beware of the $ 3.00 charge if you’re not a member). The food prices are pretty affordable so no need to pull out more than $ 20. It’s pretty small inside with a few tables and some counter space. The menu is on the board on the left, but the bento choices are at the counter on a laminated sheet taped to the glass. There’s a variety of bottled drinks and fountain drinks to go with your meal as well. Recommendations: ++ Mochiko Chicken — Spicy!(only if you can handle, if no can, then no can)… JK, it’s not thaaat spicy, but then again, I like spicy. ++ Teri Beef ++ Chicken Katsu The chicken is so light and crispy on the ouside and juicy on the inside — packed with flavor. I am literally drooling as I write this review. Maybe I should ditch my lunch I brought from home and just stop by there again? Another thing — there is a wait(not too long), but long enough to know your ono food was prepared supah fresh, plus the kitchen is wide open — you can actually watch them cooking. If you’re checking in and reading this review, just know that I’m super jealous that you’re about to eat this delicious food… without me! Happy Eating!(:

Not many places get 5 stars from me. I needed a bento at 5am for a trip to Turtle Bay. Let’s think about this… It is so darn EARLY, yet that one guy is still crossing the street in front of me!!! Oh wait… Yes, the review. This bento B tasted BETTER than the last time when it was already my favorite. The mochiko chicken was great and the teri beef was perfect. The owner lady was as nice as you can be at 5am — which I tell you is hard to do. Anyone working this hard to make a delicious bento for me that early gets 5 stars. SOTASTY!

When I used to work down Sand Island, I used to eat here all the time. I just recently went back there and the food was the same as I remember it. It’s good cheap food for the working class. I really like their mochiko chicken and huge musubi. Winnahs.

Busy place — where the old Bagel place used to be. I tried their mochiko chicken since it’s supposed to be all the rave and I have to say I’m completely satisfied. Mac salad is delish too. All dishes are priced under $ 10 and CASHONLY so bring the greens. This preggie is quite happy I had this for lunch today and I’ll be sure to come back for some breakfast next time!

Cant. go wrong there but the spam is cooked the way I like it. The. panxakes are especially good. Plain and simple but filling and satisfying. It beats going to koa pancake house as eat I ng here is like eating home. cooked food…

This is an updated review as it is my second. Since my last review I’ve come here at least a dozen more times. While most times I came here for my fav bento(Kombu musubi and mochiko chicken) I’ve also twice ordered a large pan of mochiko chicken to take to parties. The first time I ordered a large pan of mochiko chicken I called about an hour before I needed it. I had hoped they could hook it up by shear miracle. Even though they needed at least 4 hour notice(could have been 3) they said they could accommodate my request and have it ready in 20 mins. 20 mins! They were pleasant when I picked it up and even threw in a little. The second was virtually the same experience which shows consistency although I did provide much more notice. My most recent experience was today. I went in for my usual bento which were sold out. When she asked me what I wanted I was at a loss desperately trying to find a second at choice or none at all. I told I needed a minute because the bento I prefer is sold out. She said, «hold on», and in less than a minute she made one for me. It’s those consistent experiences that bring me back again and again. Thus upgrade to previous rating. 5 star!

It was after my scuba dive and this was beside the store so I have it a try. It was a good decision that I went since the food was good. I like the mom and pops feeling rather than fancy restaurant.

My hubby keeps telling me about this place and I finally made it to Sand Island. Aside from the parking issues there is during rush hour I really enjoyed the bento we got. My bento had fried noodles, a piece of teri beef, mochiko chicken with rice… OMG the mochiko chicken had lots of flavor and I so enjoyed licking my fingers… mmmmmmm Teri beef, was soft and just as tasty. But when I ate the fried noodles, it was so darn tasty that I wanted more. I’m guessing that they added a bit of butter to fry this bad boy up because it was yummy in a un healthy way… hahahaha I’d eat there again! Thank you LUNCHBOX!

Another great spot to have lunch, or pick up a bento, near sand island. I had the loco moco once and it was filling. Last week I had a bento. Great selection of meats to include in the bento and reasonably priced too. Located in the strip mall just before the road curves on to sand island, this place is next to the bagel shop(lox of bagels) and can be confused with some of the other plate lunch places nearby. However, I’ll come here for their good priced bentos as I’m often on the go on my way to and from sand island. I’ll come back again(if I forget my lunch at home, lol).

Lunch Box is located on Sand Island Access Road in the same complex as Blimpie and Lox of Bagels. If you’re coming here during lunch, keep in mind parking will be minimal at this time and the wait for your food will be longer than usual. Many regulars call their orders in. There aren’t that many tables to sit at but they also have a short counter against the wall. However, there’s usually enough seating as most of the patrons take their food to go. I keep coming back here for the spicy mochiko chicken! If you like hot and spicy food like I do, you may be disappointed at first because I expected the chicken to be hot as in spicy hot. It’s not-it’s spicy as in delicious spices and flavoring spicy. The batter is really tasty and although the chicken is fried, it doesn’t taste very heavy. It’s my «go to» food when coming here and prefer it over the other types of chicken they serve. With every plate, you get a choice of macaroni salad or tossed salad. If you order the tossed salad, you get a choice of Italian or ranch dressing. They keep it pretty simple and it works in their favor. Their customer service is always good and they have a pretty efficient process. The only downside, in my opinion is they only accept cash-no debit/credit cards but there’s an ATM located right outside of Lunch Box.

My favorite beach bento stop. Love their fried noodles and spicy mochiko chicken. Good prices and variety. Simple but comforting foods. Local style breakfast or lunch options. Fast service. Convenient location at Sand Island Access Rd when headed to town via Nimitz.

I love this little hole-in-the-wall! Located in a one story strip mall on Sand Island Access Road, the Lunch Box serves up local comfort food via bentos and plate lunch. This is a haven for blue collar workers so don’t expect anything fancy or even very clean. Its a bare bones operation and you can see them making your food in the very, very, very open kitchen, but who cares because the food is delicious! Either you can grab a ready made bento or wait 10 – 15 minutes for a freshly made plate. The mochiko chicken here is wonderful and quite possibly my favorite EVER! Pricing is very reasonable with bentos under $ 5& plate lunch at $ 6 – 8. 31 Unilocal Challenge: #7/31

OK This is by far my FAVORITE Chicken place!!! I buy their chicken RAW and bring it home to fry… sooooo yummy! Great with a bowl of ramen or as the main dish for the night… The owners are young and hardworking and really deserve our business… I can’t say enough about how much I LOVE their chicken!!! Bought 3 dozed pieces, put them in zip log bags and my daughter is taking them back to California… just gotta dust and fry and voila! Dinner… super good at that! Call them in advance to order your chicjen. I always keep a couple thawed out in my meat tray so I can eat whenever… I just buy it, bag in zip lock(2 per bag) and freeze.
