Friends and I stopped by 2 Saturdays ago at about 8:30pm and to our surprise this place was«dead». It was so bad that as we were walking to the entrance an employee there was standing outside and told us «only get 1 person inside». What? On a Saturday night? After hearing this from an employee we looked inside and yep, only 1 person. This was a turn off so we decided to go elsewhere. Maybe it was just a slow night? Or something’s definitely wrong with this place. I noticed that there wasn’t any recent reviews of this place so I’m guessing that this place used to be good and now it’s just empty.

The service here was great until the new owner took over. We used to go there quite often for lunch, but have been disappointed since the new management made changes. It’s relatively inexpensive, but lacks the charm that it once had. And do us a favor, ask them to turn on the dart boards during lunch, it’s not only a night game ya know!

What’s up with all the five star reviews? Damn! Michelin only uses three stars and rarely if ever gives any restaurant three stars. You’d think every place in Honolulu offers stunning food! LOL! Well, enough of my complaining on to the review. King Street Café is definitely one of the hidden jewels. Lots of seating and rarely packed so it’s never uncomfortable. Mind you, I only go there from 5−9pm. Not sure what happens after that. The food is incredible! Side Street, forget about it! No parking and food is expensive and skimpy. Servings here are large, enough for three to four people with nearly everything under $ 10. Yeah, some of it is more but then again it’s the typical items you’d find anywhere else for more $‘s also. The rock shrimp is the bomb! As is the smoked pork. If you want something healthy the salads also are enough for several folks. The drinks are also reasonable and Jenn and Cheryl hustle to get you everything in a timely manner. There’s another hidden value in this place and it’s the sushi bar called Yatai Sushi. I’ll probably do an individual review but definitely a find. Yeah, you can go to Sasabune and be a big spender but to me you’re wasting your money. You’d probably spend a third of what you’d spend at Sasabune at Yatai AND be just as content. However, if you want to be given the mystical hype then stick with Sasabune. Give King Street Café a try, you won’t be disappointed.
