If you’re like me and have never bought lei from Chinatown, look no further. Island Gifts & Flowers is the place to go.
Upon arriving on Maunakea Street, I stopped into every flower shop and lei stand I came across while working my way toward Beretania Street in search of 5 fresh and fragrant lei within a $ 50 budget.
While most of the shops on Maunakea carry a nice selection, the flowers were clearly past their prime with signs of shriveling as well as browning. To make matters worse, the shopkeepers were asking full price for these inferior products. By the time I arrived on Beretania Street, it was apparent that the closer to Beretania I was, the better the price, selection and freshness.
One thing I appreciated right off the bat was that as soon I stepped into Island Gifts & Flowers, I was immediately greeted by the friendly local-​Japanese shopkeeper who patiently began to assist with understanding the reason for my visit. She carefully listened to what I was seeking and happily recommended certain lei to fit my criteria and budget.
I was especially impressed when she offered to discount my purchase because 1) she felt two of the lei were not as fresh in her opinion – which in fact to me looked perfectly fresh – and 2) she was running a special of $ 25 for 5 pikake strands but I needed 6 which she gladly honored at the same price of $ 5 instead of $ 7 per strand as indicated.
The total for (2) Ilima Tuberose lei and (3) two-​strand Pikake lei came to $ 44. Thank you Island Gifts & Flowers. This will definitely be my go-​to place from now on.

A very beautiful orchid was just delivered to me, from this shop. It is a very nice one, with flowers and some that haven’t opened/​bloomed yet.
A couple of my sisters, from Iowa, sent it. When I need a florist next, I will use this company because I trust that they will send something nice and healthy.
