This is the record store you are looking for. You WON’T find an undiscovered gem for 99 cents. These guys know what they’re doing. You WILL get quality records in great condition at a fair price. And you won’t get ripped off. Ward is extremely knowledgeable (when he emerges from his hidden lair). They seem to have more stock on the floor these days (literally, look down). A lot of what they carry is OOP. If you’re looking for something they don’t have at the moment, ask to put your name on their list.

I love shopping for used CDs at the Hungry Ear. I always leave with a handful of music. Today I bought CDs from Rock, Alt, Soul, and Country genres (Bowie, Dylan, Morissette, Marvin Gaye, and Trio, all $ 5-​$ 7). Was looking for Olomana’s Seabird but no luck. Oh well, the hunt will bring me back shortly for another shopping spree. Validated parking makes it easy.

I don’ know how I’ve never heard of this place before. First came across this little gem a little less than a week ago and I absolutely love it! The smell of records instantly take you back to your childhood days. The staff are amazingly friendly and well knowledged; if you’re looking for something, they can help locate it for you in the store. Been coming here almost everyday since and I always manage to find a record to buy (unfortunately to my wallet). Best store on the island if you’re looking for vintage or new vinyls. They also sell cassets, CD’s, some 45’s, and even record players/​small speakers.

By far the best stop for vinyl collectors on the island.
Dennie and Ward have been doing this for years in Kailua. Jack Johnson even used to go to the Windward location before he made it big.
When Kailua land owners got greedy, this dynamic duo took their winning formula to town for the University crowd.
Located Makai from Pucks Alley, this shop occupies the corner space. Don’t worry, they validate parking.
Hungry Ear just celebrated their first Record Store Day in the new location.
I just emptied a small part of my bank account on some 80’s gems: Thompson Twins, Devo, Foreigner, and Depeche Mode on vinyl.
They also have vast Jazz, Pop, Metal, and Hawaiian VINYL collections.
Don’t have a system? Hungry Ear delivers with entry level turn tables and speakers. Dennie and Ward also partner up with Audio Lab in case you want to up your HiFi game.
They also have a sizable CD collection if Vinyl is not your thing. CD’s still provide a much better sound than MP3s… even FLAC. But as far as sound quality, vinyl is king. Studies have been done.
Happily, record stores are making a resurgence across the country.
So for the rare person who is still into physical media for audio enjoyment, go to Hungry Ear and get your ears and your soul stuffed!

Pristine vinyl, breathtaking selection. In other words, HEAVEN.

It’s very hard to find a decent used cd and record store in East Honolulu and by that I do not mean Hawaii Kai. Parking, like everything near Puck’s Alley, is difficult. It’s more of a challenge of finding the decent turnaround to get into the parking lot. I guess that’s enough about the trials of driving in that area.
It is small and the staff (only two fellows) were quite helpful. I found the CD’s that I never really thought of. The two fellows jumped in with various ideas associated with the artist I was looking at and –lo– I ended up walking away with 2 CD’s. There are records and a large selection of jazz albums. It is really great and the people there do validate parking.
