Hawaii Self Storage

This company is so unorganized and in violation of many business practice and consumer protection laws.
In addition, not only do they falsely advertise and send out inaccurate billing statements, they also overcharge. When you bring it to their attention they blame it on staffing issues. They also regularly raise their rates.
To add insult to injury, their storage facility is infested with cockroache, and who knows what else? They need to professionally exterminate their facilities on a regular basis. Whats the point of climate controlled storage, if they also do not practice regular cleaning and extermination of pests?
I would NOT recommend this company for storage, after over 2 years of renting experience at their facility.

We needed to store some extra furniture, toys etc.
Due to down sizing, we ended up at this facility because it was close and had air a condition facility. The rates are not great, plus after we signed our agreement we told the it was only a limited time offer and our rate would increase after six months. Let’s just say it was big amount.
We ended up only using them for 4 months and moved our stuff out. Customer service was decent and closing out our agreement was easy.
Other then the surprise rate increase it was a ok experience. I wouldn’t refer a friend.

I went to get something from my small unit located on the ground floor and discovered something had chewed on my folding file. I reported it to someone in the office and they said they’d take care of that. Maybe a month later, I went to get something else and I found that something had been living in one of my canvas bags. There was rat feces and a strong urine smell on my stuff. I complained again to the office and they were very sympathetic and understanding and said they would look into that. Two weeks later I go back, and the rat feces is still by the front of my unit where I had shaken it off my bag. I was getting pretty annoyed at this point and told them this is no way to do business. They politely agreed and thanked me. One week later I returned only to find the rat feces still all around my unit. Shortly after, I moved all my stuff out. I won’t go back to them again. Besides the rodent problem, the floor is filthy dirty and is never swept or cleaned. And, like other reviewers, I didn’t like the fact that they raised my rate 30% after 6 months. Nothing at all in the contract said this would happen. Renter beware!

I have never rented a storage unit before in my life. I was always able to store my stuff at my parents house or under my Uncle’s house. Now that my parents have downsized to a condo and I can’t store nice things on the dirt under my Uncle’s house, I was relegated to start searching for a storage unit for a couple of months before I move into my new place.
I started by searching my favorite review site, Unilocal, for storage facilities. This included Public Storage, PODS, Hawai’i Self Storage, Diamond Head Self Storage, and Dillingham Self Storage. Then I went to the websites and compared prices. One of my things I was looking for was security, access, and climate-​controlled units. Hawaii Self Storage, which is a locally, owned company has several locations. Based on availability and prices, I chose the Mapunapuna location because of its central location (I currently live in Kapolei and my new apartment is in Kakaako). The prices at the Mapunapuna location were more affordable than the Kaimuki one (bottom of Waialae) so I made a value call and figured I could do Mapunapuna for cheaper given that I do not intend to have the unit more than a few months.
I called on a Saturday and asked if they had the unit I was looking for (5’x6’x8’) at the quoted price online and they said they did and to come on by before the office closed at 5 p.m. When we got there, Pua, was very helpful in showing us the unit and explaining how the access works. This location has access from 5 a.m.-12 a.m. (19-​hours a day) and has night staff. In addition, they have multiple cameras and a personal code which identifies each tenant and allows you to access only your floor.
I like that the units are climate controlled, seem very safe, and for the price can’t be beat. I only dock one star because the quoted rates I found are only good for six months, then will go up to the retail price after.

Ahhh, the memories! My very first storage unit was here at this very location and I have nothing but fond memories. The air conditioned facility with top level security measures (cameras, security codes, etc.) gave me peace of mind when I used them to store my valuable belongings during a home move. So easy and convenient!

Businesses need to make money to operate, I get that. Really I do.
But when businesses are a little sneaky in the name of making money, it kinda upsets me a little.
At the end of 2013, I found my apartment lease ending, my roommates parting ways, and my stuff, lots and lots of it with no place to be stored at my parents’ house. I looked up storage units and Hawaii Self Storage on Auahi boasted a reasonable price for a 4×4×3 unit. Utilizing my stellar tetris skills, I packed my stuff into that little unit and felt satisfied knowing I got it all in there for less than $ 30 a month.
Fast forward five months.
I receive a notice in the mail stating that they are going to increase my monthly rate from $ 28 to $ 45. I was not a happy camper. I don’t appreciate being suckered in because advertised prices are low and then less than 6 months later having the price jacked up on me. Granted the contract states that rates are subject to change, it just doesn’t seem right to me that the change is within a few months.

Needless to say, I’m pulling my stuff out of there, heaven forbid the price gets raised unexpectedly in like three months from now.

As of right now I only have issues with parking. It’s covered but tight. Only one elevator on each end. Not as spacious as the one in Kaimuki. Service is ok needs improvement on professionalism especial Kimo. Steve and Peggy (I think that’s her name) were very helpful.
I still like the fact that it’s climate control and secured.

This place sucks. It may be the Mapunapuna location cause I have had a unit at Kapolei also. The service sucks. The workers are very cocky and not personable. They tried to raise my unit cost without giving me any notice. I went down to get it fixed. The guy helping me was very rude. He didn’t believe me and when he pulled the contract. GONG! I was right. now they’re saying I have to pay a %20 fee for not giving 30 day notice. Well see about that! I have found a unit at another place down the street that’s twice the size for half the price of Hawaii Self Storage. Much better customer service and prices! Steer clear of Hawaii Self Storage.
