Hana Hou – The Magazine of Hawaiian Airlines

Print media is not dead. I love holding physical magazines. HANA HOU IS A KILLER MAG! yeah its for the tourist and pushes visitors to spend at said restaurants and hotels and attractions, but they have interesting articles. Topics that really interest me. I’ll tell friends flying home to bring me a copy because I really like their magazine. And its available at places like Barns and Nobles. Because it is a good magazine. Read it. You might like it. You might not. But I always find at least one good article I enjoy. :) Hana Hou!

Everytime I ride Hawaiian Airlines, I look forward and there I see Hana Hou, the Magazine of Hawaiian Airlines. Usually I am stuck to my ipod on other commercial airlines during the whole flight. With Hawaiian Airlines however, I am usually stuck on reading the magazine. So much interesting articles and stories. It kills lots of air time while I travel! I recently was in 10^th Ave and noticed the offices of Hana Hou and thought it’d be an awesome idea to cruise inside to say thanks for keeping occupied during my travels. Met James G inside and told him my whole story. Little did I know he was a Unilocaler just like me! Thanks Hana Hou!

Hana Hou magazine is the official in-​flight magazine of Hawaiian Airlines. I have been reading their magazine ever since I started to fly with Hawaiian Air back in 2007 to run half marathons and full marathons on the neighbor islands and once flying back from Seattle-​Tacoma in 2009. It was good to find some reading material on these flights, even though the flights themselves are relatively short in between the islands.
Just like most inflight magazines I have read through these years traveling, I have found that Hawaiian Airlines’ magazine has the better articles and information that a lot of travelers like me would like to read on a flight. Majority of the magazine was advertisements and specials from local merchants and vendors from Hawaii, which is understandable. Along with flight maps and other amentities that the airline has to offer, it has plenty of local spun stories of people, places, and incredible tales of life and times of these islands. Where we have been and what will take us in the near and far future.
Comparable to other airlines’ inflight magazines, Hawaiian Airlines’ Hana Hou magazine was one of the better ones out there. I do enjoy Delta’s Sky Magazine for the rich content and skilled information, but being from Hawaii, I could identify with the homegrown stories more readily than just the mere formalities of commerce at its finest. I really like how Maui Divers Jewelry ads are most prominent in the pages of Hana Hou and the models the company uses to sport their jewelry are some of the most beautiful women out there. So amazing! Enjoying this magazine has been a blessing when I go and travel to the beauty that is Hawaii.
The flight maps on the pages of Hana Hou magazine that Hawaiian Airlines has allotted for helps me determine where I should go in the future. It saves time when I can look on there and see the world map and plan. I would like to see Tahiti, New Zealand, and Sydney Australia sometime and fly on Hawaiian Airlines, but those plans will have to wait. For me, flying to Europe is my fantasy right now and getting there would have to be with Hawaiian Airlines (depending on price and dates, of course). With non stop service from Honolulu to JFK (New York City), just one more flight across the Atlantic to reach Europe. I have been to London already, so I would like to explore more. With that said, this magazine is great for us fellow travelers.

After years of reading this magazine and taking issues off the plane, and referring to them in conversations, I got a subscription from my sister. Hooray! Who gets excited about an airline magazine? Well, when it’s as well done as Hana Hou, I do. It even, overall, beats out Honolulu magazine (although there are an AWFUL lot of Na Hoku jewelry ads)
Yes, you can read it online, but it’s such a nice piece of publication, it’s a pleasure to read.

OK, so this flight to Hawaii from Phoenix, I’m thinking I’ll just try to nap or do sudoku puzzles or just relax in preparation for a busy vacation… then, as soon as I sit down in my seat, I see the Hana Hou! magazine with a hula dancer on the cover. Whoa… I dance hula… I’ll just take the magazine and read it later… What? Hula goes to college? What does that mean? Before I even get to the Table of Contents to see what page this fascinating article is on, I’m hooked again!!! The quality of the design, ads, photos never cease to amaze me… I LOVE this magazine. I read the October/​November issue cover to cover ~ almost every word ~ and like finishing a satisfying novel, I was sad when I turned the last page…

Let’s face it, the day is rapidly approaching that Magazines will become obsolete and will be readily available as an App or something on your digital devices. But, until you can access an internet connection over seas from the Mainland to HI or from HI to any of their other destinations we will be lucky enough to have Hana Hou to view each time we fly back and forth to Hawaii.
Photography is always amazing. Stories are content rich and interesting. Not too much filler garbage and even the ad’s are well designed and placed. Being that I used to edit another local periodical, i’d say this one is pretty awesome in my book.
Always enjoy reading it on my flights between the mainland and Hawaii.

Let’s be honest, whoever bothers to go out and buy an airline’s in-​flight magazine or for that matter, actually read the in-​flight magazine on the plane? No one, including myself! Yet, I felt compelled to write a review about Hawaiian Airline’s in-​flight magazine, Hana-​Hou.
It offers some incredibly well-​written articles about Hawaii (and some of the destinations HA serves) and a very up-​to-​date calendar of local events that are happening on each of the Hawaiian islands. It includes small neighborhood gatherings of interest to large festival and events that are truly unique to the culture and to Hawaii.
Hana Hou offers some very interesting personal stories about what makes the state so unique and different from other locations from around the world. Whether it is heart-​warming tales from the food bank or to finding an adventurous zip-​line adventure on the Big Island, the articles are all well-​written and certainly very informative.
Place Hana Hou next to any other airline magazine and I am sure you will be hard pressed to find another that is better. I would bet that the worst issue of Hana Hou could easily beat the best issue of any other airline’s in-​flight magazine!

I am biased. Hands down best inflight magazine. Hands down best magazine that comes out of Hawaii. Hawaiian Airlines should be grateful they have a great magazine like Hana Hou! Just by taking a look at this magazine and comparing it to any other magazine you can see that it is a quality magazine. You can see that there is huge effort that goes into the design of this magazine as well as the stories and the pictures that go into it. You can even notice the quality of the stock of paper they print on, no other magazine like it.
The stories are tasteful and always interesting. The colors of the pictures and ads jump off the page. Also Hana Hou just started publishing Japanese language and Korean language inflight magazines for Hawaiian which are destined to be just as awesome as the English Hana Hou! magazines.

Best magazine I know of that comes out if Hawaii. I don’t read many magazines, but still. Anyone who produces a quality product like this magazine deserves 5 starts.
Articles are consistently well written and compelling no matter what the subject is. Also, excellent photography.

Let’s start off by saying my husband is the accountant for the mag but also let me include, that doesn’t make me biased. I love Hana Hou for providing me something to read whether I’m in the plane on a short trip to an outer island, the standard 5 hour to the west coast, or even while i’m waiting for the dude to get off of work.
I know none of the writers but that doesn’t make their stories less interesting. Supposedly the magazine has won a ton of awards… the husband tells me every time i tell him the mag is lame… which i’m completely kidding about… obviously.
The pictures in the magazine are spectacular. I think that’s what I like the best… if a picture catches my eye, which is always does, I stop to read the story that goes along with it. I love the random stories that entertain me and 99% of the time, they do. The only down side of the magazine is it only comes out every other month. Sad times! Other than that, I love reading them :).

I think this is one of the best magazine’s that showcases Hawaii. Surprising that it’s just a airline magazine. Years and years of reading these while flying Hawaiian Airlines led to getting a subscription for my mom. I find that the articles are insightful and allow for a plethora of information on all of the islands. The images are always bright and leap off the pages. They also always have very good places to eat as part of their articles and reviews as well. If you’re interested in getting a magazine about Hawaii, this one has to be at the top of the list.

I always get these magazines for my former student, Sir Brycen. He’s an eighth grader at the school that I teach at. He has to stop calling me by my first name though.
I also like the fact that these magazines are for sale at Borders and Barnes and Noble, in case there is a good issue and I’m not flying on Hawaiian Airlines in those months. Sometimes, there’s recipes and contests for the public in the issue.
