Gone Surfing Hawaii

If you are staying at the Sheraton Waikiki or Halekulani, THESE are the guys to rent paddle boards from. $ 50 for 3 hours is super reasonable and they are right on the beach! Brent was easy to work with and helpful and the guys on the beach are all cool too. I’d go to these guys again in a heartbeat.

Instructors were great; hands on and willing to help at any time, as well as professional and knowledgeable!

Awesome experience. Our instructor, Trevor, was amazing. Very patient and considerate. With his help, we were catching waves no problem, and neither of us had ever surfed before.

My sister and I took a lesson with Kenny. It was my second time surfing and my sister’s first time. She was a but nervous and Kenny was so helpful and eased her nerves right away. He was so friendly, informative, and funny! He made our surf experience as awesome as it could get. We caught a few good waves and Kenny gave us feedback each time we rode a wave on how we could improve. We even got to watch him ride a few waves!
We also loved our photographer! We just got our photos back and really enjoy reminiscing about our experience. Thanks Gone Surfing!

Awesome private surfing lesson with Theo (excellent surf instructor) at Gone Surfing Hawaii. This was my first time surfing and he enabled me to catch a few good waves. It was totally worth the time, money, and EFFORT.
Customer service is impeccable and customer oriented. Jojo (the owner) ensures that is the case. Lisa did a great job too.
My experience with this company (price/​customer service/​surf lessons) is definitely a 10 out of 10. I would not hesitate to use their services again.

Lisa and JoJo made this experience for my clients enjoyable from beginning to end. They have amazing follow through from the initial email of requesting a lesson to finishing the lesson and sending an email asking how everything went. Jojo was very patient in the water and even had one of the girls catching waves in just a span of an hour. If you visit Hawaii and want a surf lesson go see Lisa and JoJo. Mahalo!

Theo was amazing! My husband and I had a great time. It was our first time and he made surfing easy and fun. He was very encouraging, I was nervous and he allowed me to just sit back and enjoy the waves as my husband was surfing through them. I definitely would recommend them to everyone.

My boyfriend and I booked our first ever surfing lesson with Gone Surfing and had a great time. Booking a semi-​private lesson online was very straightforward, and the directions to meet the instructor at the beach were clear. They’re located on the beach outside the Outrigger Reef hotel.
We met our instructor, Theo, for our 10.30 lesson. He was friendly and reassuring and he obviously took our safety, as well as our enjoyment, seriously. He gave us a good 15 – 20 minutes of preparation for getting in the water, covering general tips, safety, as well as going through a few rehearsals of getting up on the board. He took a personalized approach and it made it easy to follow and remember his advice.
He towed us out to the waves to save us the trouble of paddling out right away. Within a few minutes we were both up on the board catching waves and having fun. It definitely got pretty tiring after an hour or so — your neck and shoulders can hurt from paddling and lying on the board. I also swallowed quite a lot of water from falling off the board and started to feel a little sick, but Theo could tell when we needed a break and gave us time to relax while he chatted about what to do around Waikiki.
All in all this was a great experience. More expensive than doing a big group lesson, but definitely worth it — we both agreed it would be way harder to catch waves if we didn’t have such close instruction. I’m now hoping to do some more lessons to build on what I learned. Highly recommended!

After living in Hawaii for 3 years and just attempting to surf on my own with friends, having no real progress or success, I decided to take a lesson with the Gone Surfing team. Within minutes of being in the water I was standing up riding waves. I ended up going twice in one week I had so much fun. My daughter and I took lessons during a vacation to Oahu. We both wanted to try our hand at surfing (again). I have to say that this was one of the best lessons I have ever had on the water. Both the instructor, and the photographer were amazing!!! We absolutely had a blast and learned a ton!
I reserved our lesson ahead of time, and I would have to say that the entire process from reservation, to meeting them on the beach, to the actual lesson was handled with the utmost of professionalism. I would rate them with 10 stars if I could!

From start to finish this was an excellent experience because of everyone at GSH. In making the reservations via phone call, e-​mail correspondence prior to the trip, and directions on where to meet I never had any worries or confusion.
The one thing I was concerned about is that an experienced surfer might be annoyed with dealing with first timers in this sport. Not once did I feel that way with Trevor. He was awesome from the get go, personable, patient, and great with teaching style. Awesome dude! A few minutes on shore and we were paddling out to hit the waves. One of their other guys came out to help tow us back out in giving a rest on paddling out each time, which wasn’t necessary, but certainly appreciated. Definitely pay the extra to have someone taking pictures as you ride the wave, totally worth it. Afterwards the cd with our pictures was ready almost immediately, but we didn’t have any way of viewing them prior to getting home so JoJo was kind enough to take time out of her evening to e-​mail us a few of them. I can’t say enough good things about the experience with Gone Surfing Hawaii. Unfortunately they did such a good job that I won’t be taking lessons next time, I’ll just be renting the board (from them of course) and catching waves on my own… hopefully!

My wife and I are on our first visit to HI. We are staying at the Hilton Village, and searched for the top rated surfing outfits in the area. We chose Gone Surfing because of the reviews and the proximity to our hotel.
These guys are awesome, fun, and they know how to take care of first timers. Our instructor was Trevor, though everyone there was really nice and totally focused on ensuring you get the basics down, stay safe, and catch the best waves Waikiki has to offer.
Morning rides are the best, as the afternoon tides mellow the waves out quite a bit. In the morning, the ocean may look calm but a 2 – 5 feet surf is awesome to a beginnner. There are quite a few locals there too, just looking to catch a few nice waves. The crowd seemed evenly split between instructors, beginners, and locals, but everyone is having fun. Once you get the hang of it, the toughest part is paddling back out… it’s a total core, arm, and neck workout!
We would definitely do lessons with these guys again, and I highly recommend them. Mahalo Trevor!

Joanne the owner clearly makes sure things are done right, and anything that goes wrong she takes care of.
We had a safety mishap, someone got injured hitting her head on the board of another surfer in the lesson, and Joanne is going to retrain that one instructor to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Further, she gave a refund to us, because she cares about running quality operation that provides a good experience to the customers.
I would go back and give them another go!

We had an amazing time learning how to surf with the Gone Surfing crew. Our instructor Trevor was very professional. We booked a two hour private lesson and after a short orientation on the shore we hit the waters of Waikiki beach and with the help and instructions of Trevor we were up and riding our very first wave. Pure awesomeness! We had a great time. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip. these guys are pros. They even sent out a Holiday post card later which was thoughtful and a sweet reminder of our successful first attempt at riding some waves!

So legit. These guys know exactly what they’re doing.
I may be tempted to go to another surf lesson, some of those bigger ones that spend more money on marketing. Dont be fooled. GSH is where it’s at.
Took a lesson with Theo during our trip last week on a Monday morning. Being a So Cal boy, I know a thing or two. But Mrs. G, who’s from Arizona, where. there’s no water… had never surfed. That’s okay, Theo the man explained the entire process in full detail. We spent the first 20 minutes just talking through the motions, practicing them. We felt very comfortable once we were on the water.
After getting out in Waikiki, there was a pocket where there were about 20 other students. Sure it’s crowded but there were plenty of opportunities. However, here’s where the magic happens.
All of a sudden, no waves. none. Mother said… no waves, I’m taking a break, in the area we were sitting. So the instructors from the other school just sat there, said we would wait it out.
Theo, being the 20 year vet he is, said screw that. I’m going hunting for waves. So off we went, being towed by Theo, to another area, where we caught a few additional waves. Of course the crowd follows but it showed his skils vs. the other guys.
The cherry on top was when Mrs. G, first time surfer, took a wave about 100 meters from the break all the way to the beach. It was twice as long as any ride I had. She was stoked.
We have a blast. These guys rock.

I had a fantastic experience here. Trevor is experienced, patient and knowledgable. I didn’t expect I could stand up in the first lesson. But he made it possible. He was patient explaining everything, and helping me analyze why I fell in water the first wave I caught. He is really a nice and cool guy!
After my lesson, Jojo sent me email for feedback. I know they really care about customers. Thank you!
