First Hawaiian Bank

First Hawaiian Bank is a good bank if you just have your basic checking and savings accounts, otherwise, get ready for a nightmare.
My loved one was recently incapacitated and I came in with my durable power of attorney (and healthcare power of attorney) forms so that my family and I could take care of finances on behalf of my loved one. First Hawaiian Bank made photocopies of the DPOA and stated that it was sufficient for me to take care of finances on behalf of my loved one.
A month and a few weeks later, I came back to cash out a check on behalf of my loved one, and I was told by the teller that I needed to deposit the check, then withdraw it as cash. I was unable to just cash the check. The teller stated that it would take too much time to search for the DPOA that I had submitted. Seriously, that is NOT customer service and truly an insult to my loved one. Eventually, the teller cashed the check stating that it was a ‘small amount’ (it was a refund check less than $ 100.00) so it would be an exception this one time. Later, I had requested to speak to the supervisor because I wanted to know why I was unable to just sign and cash a check regardless of the amount. I sat on the side for over half an hour, and eventually had to leave because I had other errands to run. My worry is what will happen when I do handle monies over $ 100.00 on behalf of my loved one. I do not even know what amount is a ‘small amount’.is it less than $ 100.00, $ 80.00.I have no idea and the ‘small amount’ the teller was stating seemed totally arbitrary.
Later, I received a call from the branch manager (supervisor?) explaining what had happened, and I requested documentation on the guidelines needed on banking as a representative for my loved one to be mailed to me. I have not yet received any documentation on the power of attorney guidelines for banking and do not know why I submitted my DPOA to the bank when they do not honor it with no clear explanation. I was told that for me to do any banking on behalf of my loved one, I would need to have notary certification (or something like that. I really don’t know because I have no documentation mailed to me yet!). My loved one has banked at FHB since 1985 and yet, this is the type of «customer service» that my family receives. There is another Unilocal review (Megumi H.) who also had similar issues. She also seems to have gone to another FHB branch and received the same unfriendly, unhelpful service.
If you are requiring copies of your monthly bank statements for any reason (insurance claims, Medicare/​Medicaid, etc.), it will cost you $ 2.50 a page. Central Pacific Bank on the other hand, does NOT. and they will stamp and initial any copies of bank statements you request.
FHB is a decent bank if you just have your basic checking and savings accounts, but if you require anything further than that, it is totally a nightmare, and FHB does NOT give any clear documentation on what is required when a person needs to take care of finances on behalf of another person.

They won’t honor my Durable Power of Attorney and they are trying to take over my moms Trust even though her Trust has been amended and restated. See pics I posted of the Receipt of the Hardcopy Durable Power of Attorney. Astounding illegal, unethical practices. If you’re an attorney who litigates on non-​compliance,
bank fraud or elder abuse, hit me up. Never make FHB a Successor Trustee.

Efficient operation with potential of nine tellers, so there is rarely a long line. Spacious facility with great a/​c. Parking entrance is on makai side of Beretania, just after Petco. ATM parking near bank entrance. Shaded parking stalls around back.

By far the worst bank in Hawaii. They charge on everything and refuse to help in situations. I’ve used a personal chancing, business checking, and credit card with them. Absolutely awful, better to go with banks that don’t have hidden fees. I’ve been drowned in over 400 dollars in fees for my business account. What is that? Close your accounts and go elsewhere. Stay away from this bank.

Be aware of BERNADETTE KANESHIRO!!! I lost over $ 1500.00 in fees because of her carelessness! She approved my loan even informed my realtor that it’s like 100% no problem with the loan, and after, 3 days before closing the loan, She came up with dumbest reason, and due to her fault for not getting important things done way long before the loan was in escrow, she decided to pull a fast one on my, by increasing my interest rate over 2%!!! Little that she expected that I wasn’t going to have her take advantage of me! So upset, not just the money loss, the time and constraints that I had to go through dealing with her. Despite the fact that it was her fault for not getting done beginning of escrow, and waiting until the end, she screwed me over, and instead she appologizing to me about it, she just said,” oh thats unfortunate” and not a single word sorry. Now I’m so traumatized every time I see First Hawaiian logo anywhere!!! I Hate that company sooo badly, she is just an inexperienced banker, Please do not waste ur time!!! I just found out from a Co worker of mine, dealt with her the same way I did, he ended up paying bunch of fees, and getting denied…

My last visit there, two tellers say to me, «I’m sorry about that.» Next stop was the main branch where I opened a checking account, so I could pull my money out and close the account. It wasn’t the «we’re looking into the problem and we’ll get back to you» which they never did (a month had gone by already) or the being put on hold for over 30 minutes after being transferred then getting cut off or after calling back this time put on hold for over 20 minutes before being transferred and then being judged, it was being treated unprofessionally and with sarcasm by the customer service rep. I feel sorry for some of the young employees there. Their own checking account deposit policies either lie to you or don’t fully disclose itself to it’s entirety, defintely inconveniencing you. Beware! My take on this bank, only for the very well to do individuals.

OK so I do hate to give such a low rating. I do give Ashley at this branch 5 stars but this bank as a whole gets zero stars. My mortgage was sold to them unfortunately. I have gone in to the bank 3 times since September to try & get my automatic payments straightened out & I like to pay extra so I can pay off the mortgage sooner. NEVER had any trouble w/​Honolulu Home Loans doing this. First Hawaiian is now telling me I have made too many payments & they will not do any automatic deductions until February? WHAAAT? That means i cannot pay extra??? So now I have to manually send in a check every month cuz they are in the dark ages. I have 3 jobs & don’t physically pay ANY of my bills.(thank goodness as i am too busy) Everything is automatically deducted. I will even pay extra on my charge cards & it is a no brainer. What is wrong w/​this bank? I have hated this bank ever since I went in 3x to get a mortgage & was treated rudely at the King/​Dillingham Branch & was practically laughed out there as they did not think I could get a loan. This is a money grabbing bank. I wish there was a way I could get my loan transferred to another bank. I am furious. DO NOT bank w/​these folks.

If a bank that closes at 4 pm during the week works for you, go for it. I always see people waiting outside in the morning. Saturday the line has at least (if you’re lucky) only 15 – 20 people waiting.

Very nice branch. Convenient. I went in for a meeting with a Mortgage Specialist just to get some information. Was a great experience!

Quick service. I’m just lucky with lines because when ever I come by, I just need to wait about a minute till it’s my turn.

I normally don’t bank at First Hawaiian but my boyfriend was out of town and needed a check deposited in his business account. So being the amazing girlfriend and baby mama that I am, I agreed to help him out and run a banking errand for him. I didn’t want to go downtown and this is the closest location to where we live.
What I love about this location is there’s a ton of parking. Walgreens is next door and doesn’t have nearly as much traffic as Safeway used to, so there’s ample stalls. I walked in and noticed that the branch has recently been renovated so it’s actually prettier than you’d think from the outside. But now for the REAL reason why I’m giving it 5-​stars.
As I waited in line to deposit a check, a man began yelling at a teller because he was upset that he had to give them his fingerprint. I’m assuming he was cashing a check because this is standard policy. The man became increasingly agitated and kept insisting that they «reverse the charge» or they’d be «hearing from his lawyer.» The teller kept trying her best to calm down the obviously cuckoo man but to her dismay he only became more angry. I signaled to a police officer walking by that the man was completely insane, but twirling my pointer finger in a circle by my ear, and we all watched as she continued with the insanity.
I deposited my check just as the man was leaving and the police officer followed behind him to assure he left the premises. As i look back on what had occurred I thought, WOW that man was as insane as a butt crack and yet that poor First Hawaiian Bank employee did her very best to deal with him. 5-​stars girl, because man, you DESERVE it!!!

We still have a choice when it comes to dealing with banks.
DO NOT get an account with this bank. If you want a deposit or transfer applied to your account same-​day (!), you have to ask them. Otherwise they will hold the money (so they can squeeze every penny of interest out of YOUR money). They are trigger happy on fees of all kinds. If your card is charged fraudulently and overdrawn, First Hawaiian treats the transaction like it’s your fault.
The tellers at this bank are hit or miss. Usually miss. They are not human, because apparently human problems do not apply to them and therefore they do not understand that you wouldn’t be asking for help if you didn’t need it.

I like this bank as I can enter and exit 3 different directions.
There is a Walgreen construction going on right now. A bit dusty feel, but it’s not their fault.

Well, since there isn’t an option for zero stars, I’ll at least give them one for nice customer service workers, for the most part. HOWEVER,
We opened a business credit card with FHB and they managed to royally screw it up by
1) sending all statements to the wrong address even though we had to fill out the change of address form TWICE and go in in person TWO MORE TIMES when they still didn’t get the address OR social security number OR my name right. Each time we were reassured that it would all be taken care of. But, uh, NO it wasn’t. And still isn’t. so we never received ANY STATEMENTS.
2) They somehow managed to open two accounts when we only signed up for one, one of which was «HIDDEN» from all customer service people, credit card specialists, tellers, and basically everyone at the branch level etc, so that when we went in IN PERSON to pay off the balance MULTIPLE TIMES over the span of SEVERAL MONTHS, they kept telling us the balance was ZERO. We even went as far as having someone at the branch call the SEPARATE «credit card office» to access the balance. We had stopped using the card months prior because of the problem with not being able to check transactions nor access the charges online.
3) FHB somehow let over $ 2,000+ accrue in the «parent» (I would call it evil) account– EVEN THOUGH CUST SERVE AND CREDIT CARD SPECIALISTS TOLD US THE BALANCE WAS ZERO MULTIPLE TIMES.
Then, someone called us late Friday afternoon to say there was that HUGE balance PLUS late charges. Now they’ve screwed over our credit score and made it MY fault?
I subsequently spent over TWO HOURS at the bank on a SATURDAY (because they called late Friday) with confused staffers who couldn’t even figure out why someone from the credit card department had called us about the late fees because they couldn’t see this 2^nd mysterious «ghost parent» account, which we had never signed up for, never received a card for, and never been made aware of because THEY WEREN’T EVEN AWARE OF IT. At least two customer service reps had never even SEEN this type of account before.
4) After dealing with the nice customer service rep, I asked to speak to a manager so this won’t happen to anyone else. The manager approached me like she was trying to attack/​intimidate me, didn’t even introduce herself, and made the whole thing seem like my fault and like I should be apologizing to her for having screwed up credit, an incorrect address, incorrect social security number, and wasting hours and hours of time sitting inside a bank. MASSIVE FAIL.
They had way too many chances to set things straight and DIDN’T. Therefore, FAIL. Please beware.
